What is Addition?

Addition is one of the four basic mathematic operations. (The other three are subtraction, multiplication, and division.) Addition is the act of combining two or more numbers together to get one number.

An Example of Addition

If I have 2 apples and add 3 more, how many apples will I have?

Well, if we start out with two apples…

…and we add three more…

…we now have FIVE apples!

More Practice

What if I start out with 3 apples and add 4?

Well, if we start out with three apples…

…and then we add four…

..we get seven apples!

The Addition Symbol

The addition symbol looks like this:

+

Now, let’s try adding using this symbol!

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

Adding with the Addition Symbol

What if we have 2 apples and add 1 more?

+

If we have two apples…

…plus (+) one more…

…we get three apples!

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

More Practice

What is 1 apple plus (+) 3 more apples?

+

When we add these apples together, we get four apples!

Adding with Numbers

Sadly, we won’t always be able to add apples. In math, we have to add numbers too…

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

How to Add Numbers

When adding numbers, we can still think of it like adding apples—even if the problem doesn’t say so.

So, when we hear the question: “What’s 3 + 4?” we know exactly what to do.

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

Adding Numbers—Example

What’s 3+4?

We can still think of it like an apple question: What’s 3 apples plus 4 apples?

Thinking of it like an “apple question” can help as you learn to add.

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

Adding Numbers—Example

So, what is 3 apples plus 4 apples?

We can see that three apples plus four apples is equal to…SEVEN APPLES!

+

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

Adding Numbers—Example

However, the question isn’t what is 3 apples + 4 apples? The question is what is 3 + 4? So, the answer isn’t 7 apples, it’s just 7, since we’re working with numbers only—no apples included!

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

More Practice

What is 4+1?

Think of it like an “apple question!” What’s 4 apples + 1 apple?

+

4 apples+ 1 apple is 5 apples… so the answer

is 5!

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

Even More Practice

What is 2+2?

Think of it like an “apple question!”

The Equal Sign

The equal sign sometimes comes at the end of addition problems. It looks like this:

=

4251 3

0011 0010 1010 1101 0001 0100 1011

Using the Equal Sign

This is the way we have been writing our math problems:

What is 1+1?

You can also write them like this:

1+1=

They mean the same thing?

2!

Another way to write it…

Sometimes, math problems are written vertically, like this:

2

+ 3

5

< This means the same thing

as this:> 2+3=5

They mean the same thing, just written a different way!

Adding 0

0

This (^) is a zero. It equals nothing. So, if you add 0 to any number, it will equal that same number.

Adding more than 2 Numbers

Adding more than two numbers is easy…you just add more numbers (and plus signs) to the problem.

…and add three…

…and then add four more…

…we get 9 apples!

Congratulations!

You are now “adding experts!”

Don’t forget: if you get stuck “adding apples” in your head, you can add them on paper if you need to. Eventually, you won’t even need to add apples, you’ll be so good!
