What is RPM Phase One?• Four new, accessible, modern Red Line
stations to replace aged stations at Lawrence, Argyle, Berwyn and Bryn Mawr and reconstruction of adjacent track structure
• Construction of a modern rail bypass north of Belmont where Red, Brown and Purple line trains intersect that will allow us to add train service to reduce service delays and chronic overcrowding on trains
• New rail signal system between Howard and Belmont that will improve train fl ow and service reliability
• Future phases of RPM will rebuild the remaining Red and Purple line tracks and stations north of Belmont
RPM Phase One ProjectAs part of our ongoing investment to improve rail service, the CTA will make track improvements on the Red and Purple lines at Addison to eliminate slow zones and to minimize the potential for existing track conditions to evolve into future slow zones during construction of the Red and Purple Modernization (RPM) Phase One Project.
The track improvements near Addison will provide smoother rides by replacing aging track equipment and will improve service reliability over the long term. The work will be completed before the Cubs’ home opener on Monday, April 8.

Service Impacts:To accommodate the track renewal construction, it will be necessary to close the west side of the Addison station platform for a three-week period, from 10pm, Sunday, March 10 to midday Saturday, March 30. During this period, trains toward 95th will stop on the side normally used by Howard-bound trains, and trains traveling toward Howard will bypass Addison. Customers who want to board or exit Howard-bound trains at Addison will be required to “back-ride”, which means to ride to the next stop, exit and board a train in the opposite direction:
• For Howard-bound service from Addison station, take a 95th-bound train to Belmont and transfer to a Howard-bound train on the opposite platform.
• For Howard-bound service to Addison station, take an Howard-bound train to Sheridan (or Wilson, if an ADA-accessible trip is needed) and transfer to a 95th-bound train on the opposite platform back to Addison.
In addition, Addison will be temporarily closed two weekends to accommodate advance and fi nishing work supporting the track renewal project: 10pm, Friday, March 8 to 10pm, Sunday, March 10 and midday Saturday, March 30 to 4am, Monday, April 1. During the temporary closures, free bus shuttle service will be provided between Belmont and Addison stations.
With the exception of customers who use the Addison station, riders will see little to no impacts to service.
Alternate Service:Riding back in the opposite direction to board your desired train is expected to add time to the average trip, especially during off-peak and late night periods. It is also expected that the partial closure of the platform will result in crowding, especially during rush periods, which may affect travel times. Allow extra travel time, and consider altering your trip to use a different station or line to avoid crowding and longer trip times.
If you live within a 1/2-mile north or south of Addison Street, consider using the adjacent Belmont station or Sheridan station, where trains will stop in both directions at all times. You can use the #77 Belmont and #80 Irving Park buses to connect to these stations.
You can also use the #152 Addison or #80 bus to connect to the Brown Line farther west for trips to downtown. Also consider north-south buses in the area, such as the #36 Broadway on Broadway or the #151 Sheridan or Lake Shore Drive express buses on Inner Lake Shore Drive for trips to/from downtown or north lakefront destinations.
