Pg. 8 From Committee on Ministry

The committee recommends and moves that the examination of Kathleen Davies, candidate for

ordination, be sustained. Kathleen is nominated to serve as Designated Pastor of Community of the

Servant Savior, Houston, Texas.

The committee recommends and moves that the examination of Brian Long, candidate for ordination, be sustained. Brian is nominated to serve as Designated Pastor of New Hope Presbyterian Church,

Katy, Texas.

The committee recommends and moves that the examination of Kristi Click Christy Klick, candidate

for ordination, be sustained. Kristi Brian is nominated to serve as Designated Associate Pastor of

Spring Branch Presbyterian Church, Houston, Texas.

Note to the Presbytery: The version of the Reconciliation and Dismissal Procedure found in the packet is correct. We discovered last week that the version on the presbytery’s website was not the amended version approved at the December, 2011, meeting. We regret the error, and have made the correction on the website. This did not affect any of the dismissals voted on by the presbytery in any way. Those dismissed prior to the July 19, 2014 meeting are: San Augustine, Memorial; Spring, Advent; Lake Jackson, First; Kingwood, First; Galveston, West Isle; and Freeport, First. It also did not affect the process at Houston, First.

The lines that were amended at the December, 2011 meeting are: Line 142 to add the words “one of more” instead of “a” Line 217 to add the words “Year 6 and beyond – 0%” Line 226 to add the word “a” before the word “petition” and adding “to organize a new church” between the words “petition” and “shall” so that it reads “a petition to organize a new church shall …” To add after Line 261 the words: “d) the presbytery agrees to execute all documents necessary to effectuate the transfer of all assets or property pursuant to this procedure.”

Report from the Vision Team

July 19, 2014 Change is inevitable, and that is truer today than ever before. Change is coming from

everywhere, from Society, from General Assembly, from within our Presbytery, change is coming from within our own congregations. If we do not recognize and face

change head on, we are likely to dig our heads in the sand hoping that change will pass us by and we can stay in our comfort zones.

So with these inevitable changes, this is an opportune time for Presbytery to do some peering into the crystal ball for defining and refining. This defining and refining is not about restructuring or developing a new Presbytery mission statement. Rather, it is

about discovering -- together! -- who God wants us to be by listening very carefully to what the Spirit is saying through our smallest congregations all the way to our

largest ones. The result of such careful listening will carry our Presbytery into the next decade.

To facilitate this listening process, Presbytery’s General Council has established a Visioning Team, who will facilitate a multi-month series of conversations with as

many churches in our presbytery as possible: large and small, established and new, stable and in transition, thriving and otherwise. These conversations will explore what has enhanced people’s engagement with their faith and the relationships we

have made as we collectively live into the Great Commission to “Go into the world and make disciples….” (Mt 28:19a)

The Visioning Team has already done this process with some 13 groups around the presbytery. The reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. And some participants

even said it reminded them how much their church means to them... something that sometimes gets lost in the hustle and bustle of “church work.” That’s another reason

why we’d welcome the opportunity for you to open this “story telling” event to as many as possible in your congregation.

The Visioning Team will be reaching out to our Congregations, but don’t wait for us to contact you! If you’d like to schedule a Visioning Team visit, please contact Lynn Hargrove and she will pass along the info to the Visioning Team.

For information: Members of the Vision Team have met with representatives from these congregations: Bellaire, ChristChurch; Houston, Pines; Houston, Pathways; Beaumont, St. Andrew’s. They have also met with these committees of the presbytery: COM, Finance, General Council, Outreach, PYCC, and the presbytery staff.
