STRATEGIC PLANNING – NORMANDY SCHOOLS COLLABORATIVEELA (Pre-K - 4)
Project Title Project Description
1 Implement guided reading
The goal in guided reading is to help students learn to use
independent reading strategies with success. Therefore,
teachers will be provided with relevant on-going professional
development to improve the implementation of guided reading to
improve student achievement.
2Implement longitudinal monitoring of
student data within the EleMiddle model
Have teachers identify low-performing students, provide specific
interventions in small group settings. Have each student will track
their progress on assessments and mastery of Missouri Learning
Standards.
3Encourage every day writing in the
classroom
In order for student to be effective writers, it is recommended that
teachers provide daily writing opportunities. Teachers should
expose students to the writing process and free writing in their
journals.
4Maintain fidelity to district-wide writing
prompts (administration and scoring)
Teachers will collaboratively (across a grade level, at PLCs)
discuss at least three pieces of student writing over the course of
the year and provide feedback to students that allows them to
improve their writing by the end of the year as measured by
DESE rubrics (students will write every day)
5Research curriculum for full adoption
cycle beginning in 2019-2020 SY
Gather and consider data to identify priorities for English
Language Arts. The data will help to reflect on past successes
and challenges, identify priorities, and lay the groundwork for
instructional materials.
2-Year Roadmap
2019-2020 2020-2021
Planning for Excellence 2.0
• Continue building teacher capacity to use
STAR Data for informing and guiding
instruction
• Enhance the use of technology (specifically
Google G Suite) in writing by offering quality
PD to teachers
• Initiate collaboration with science and social
studies to create a cross-curricular focus on
literacy
• Establish effective reading interventions (e.g.
Reading Plus and Read180)
• Ensure consistency across buildings with
relation to curriculum delivery and facilitate
conversations around student data
Monitoring for Excellence
• Utilize longitudinal view of student reading
data (will have three years of STAR reading
data per student) and introduce similar
concept to writing portfolios
• Begin researching curriculum in conjunction
with Social Studies for adoption in 2022-23
school year
• Leverage teacher knowledge to continue
strengthening use of best practices in literacy
across the district
• Review efficacy of implemented reading
interventions and adapt accordingly
• Monitor consistency of curriculum delivery
across buildings and identify opportunities for
inter-building collaboration

Science
2019-20 2020-21
Planning for Excellence 2.0
• Continue utilizing NWEA assessment at tested
grade levels to monitor student progress and
inform instruction
• Enhance teachers’ understanding of Next
Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and
inquiry-based learning through high-quality PD
opportunities
• Finish writing and adoption of science
curriculum in accordance with curriculum
adoption schedule
• Strengthen community partner relationships
through ongoing field trips, excursions, and
pilot programs (e.g. MySci)
Monitoring for Excellence
• Consider expansion of NWEA assessment (or
other form of common assessment) at grade
levels that are not MAP or EOC tested
• Monitor teachers’ enhanced understanding of
NGSS and application of inquiry-based
learning opportunities in classrooms
• Implement science curriculum and take
advantage of expanded departmentalization to
spread best practices throughout buildings
• Formalize community partner relationships and
make decisions regarding pilot programs
Project Title Project Description
1Increase Student Achievement
on NWEA testing
Continue implementation of data analysis to
monitor student performance per NWEA
benchmark results. Also have teachers identify
low performing students and provide
focused/targeted interventions in small group
settings.
2Increase amount of time spent on
inquiry-based investigations
(Labs)
In order to increase engagement throughout the
lesson teachers must start implementing
investigations (Labs) into their daily lessons
plans. Labs should occur weekly, and provide
students with the opportunity to explore a
science concept through a hands-on open
investigation.
3Science-Focused (NGSS)
professional development
Continue to provide top notch professional
development for both elementary and
secondary science teachers through both
internal and external partnerships.
