Former chancellor to discuss personal memoirDr. Charles Smith, former UT

Martin chancellor, will discuss his recently published memoir, “Journal of a Fast Track Life,” at 5 p.m., Sept. 13, in the Paul Meek Library.

Smith served as the university’s fifth chancellor from 1980-1985 and is a former Tennessee commissioner of education, as well as a previous chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents. He served in President George W. Bush’s administration as executive director of the Nation’s Report Card and has held leadership roles in education, journalism, and both state and federal government.

His book focuses on lessons learned from a number of high-level mentors and professional guides across three industries. Some research for the book was conducted at the Paul Meek Library. Smith will discuss his experiences and sign copies of his book during the event. He will also be available to take questions from the audience.

LIBRARY SPEAKER – Dr. Charles Smith, former UT Martin chancellor, is shown speaking April 8 during the university’s annual Honors Day ceremony.

Media studio now open in Paul Meek Library

A new media studio is open for use in the Paul Meek Library’s Steven E. Rogers Media Center. This video recording studio allows users to create video presentations at the press of a button.

Located in Room 134 of the Rogers Media Center, the studio is based on the One Button Studio created by IT professionals at Penn State University. The space is open to UT Martin students, faculty and staff, as well as community members, free of charge.

Users must make a reservation to use the space and bring their own USB drive for file storage.

After inserting the USB drive into the hub, the use of one button activates the lights, camera and microphone. A green screen allows users to change the background or project their own presentations onto the screen as needed.

The do-it-yourself aspect of the studio provides the campus community with a practical option for creating projects and presentations.

For more information or to reserve the studio, contact Patricia Sanders, media center manager, at 881-7069.

You Tell Me•Question – How are student ticket-writers trained?

•Answer – Students working with the Department of Public Safety are trained over several days on the rules, policies and procedures of campus security and parking. They are shown each type of parking pass and educated on what constitutes the various types of parking violations. They are also taught to document certain violations with photographs. After the initial training, each student is paired with an on-duty officer or senior ticket-writer for on-the-job training over several shifts. They continue in this manner until they can demonstrate proficiency and accuracy in their position. Retraining is given as needed.
