A major innovation from Avery Dennison® has transformed productivity for conformable labelling. Fasson® Global MDO brings to the Home and Personal Care segment for the first time ever a product that delivers both outstanding shelf impact and the ease of conversion previously seen only with non-conformable films:
• A new, semi-squeezable film with high clarity, high level of whiteness (on the white film), strength and stability
• Optimal stiffness for high speed applications.• Inherent printability with UV screen, UV flexo,
letterpress and solvent gravure• A new water-resistant adhesive with up to
50% lower ooze and best-in-class wet-out• A recyclable PET liner that eliminates web
breaks and dust contamination.
Profitably greenFasson® Global MDO yields twice as many labels per roll as a conventional conformable film. Longer rolls mean reduced downtime, and there are major sustainability benefits too – Global MDO produces 40% less solid waste and requires 37% less energy during manufacture.
Striking performanceFasson® Global MDO brings excellent conversion speeds to conformable labelling, with fewer on-press adjustments as well as a ‘forgiving’ drape that copes with difficult container shapes. High opacity level for white version which enhances printed graphics what contributes to shelve impact and attracts consumers.
Fasson® Global MDO was developed for conformable applications, to dramatically improve converting and dispensing. It makes semi-squeezable containers achievable at higher print speeds and with reliable die cutting. The new material eliminates weaving, ensures better clarity, reduces roll changes and cuts raw material use.
The innovative new product creates entirely new labelling possibilities within the Home and Personal Care segment. High shelf impact can now be achieved at lower total applied cost than ever before, opening up the semi-squeezable frontier to new product ranges.
Global MDO matches the quality, consistency and printability of conventional Fasson® PE85 conformable material, but with a range of compelling extras. A major benefit is a 50% increase in roll length for only a 10% increase in roll diameter:
Doubling the number of labels for the same roll diameter brings with it significant productivity gains. The scale of savings can be easily calculated using the Fasson® Global MDO Total Applied Cost model.

Fasson® Global MDO manufacture uses polymer blending, co-extrusion and machine-direction-orientation (MDO) to give excellent machine direction stiffness.
Cast co-extrusionBy blending the right polymer resins into a single film, Global MDO achieves excellent clarity/opacity (clear/white versions). The unique Avery Dennison co-extrusion process provides a robust print skin that can be corona-treated to give optimum results with a wide mix of printing and stamping technologies. That means bolder and more vibrant graphics on the shelf.
Machine direction orientation (MDO)The MDO process aligns polymer chains in the machine direction only, creating cross-direction conformability. MDO films have a degree of rigidity, allowing excellent registration, die-cutting and dispensing. Fasson® Global MDO copes easily with compound curves and semi-squeezeable containers – it provides a ‘forgiving’ drape that minimises air entrapment in large areas and hides container imperfections.

Fasson® Global MDO has excellent environ-mental credentials. Avery Dennison has conducted a lifecycle assessment for conventional Fasson® PE85 and the new product, looking at a range of criteria from production through to disposal. Impact was assessed for fossil and biogenic materials, water depletion, energy, greenhouse gases and waste.

Compared with PE85, Global MDO™ improved sustainability in all categories, giving environmental performance improvements ofbetween 3% and 97%:
Replacing the total current annual usage of Fasson® PE85 label materials with Fasson® Global MDO would save over 2,000 trees and 2,000 barrels of oil. It would offset the emissions of over 900 cars, save the electricity used by more than 20,000 households and reduce solid waste equivalent to that produced by more than 5,600 households.
Reduction in mass is one important driver for higher levels of sustainability, with substantially less material used:
