engineered performance

WELCOME TO ADC,an international, family-owned company with a world wide reputation, gained by providing the highest standard of Rig Inspection services to companies across the globe for over 28 years.

We believe our single-mindedobsession with detail is the primaryformula for our success, and thereason why we continue to be ratednumber one within the industry.

Detail which ensures that theEngineers we employ, are not onlyof the highest calibre backed byyears of experience, but are alsoable to work easily with rigpersonnel anywhere in the world.

Detail which regularly combinesyouthfulness and maturity. That’swhere we partner seasoned oilfieldprofessionals with fresh-facedtechnology laden graduates. Thebenefits of which are numerous, valuable and sometimes legendary.

Detail which has led to the development of our muchacclaimed TRAMS reportingsystem, unique to ADC, and a firstfor the industry. Not only does itdeliver standardisation to thereporting process, it significantlyreduces the reporting time frame, enabling, in some cases, an interim

report to be available even beforethe engineers have left the rig.

Detail which has inspired the creation of our own online trainingfacility VIRTUAL ACADEMY. Writtenand developed by our engineers, the teaching is uniquely designedto stimulate real competencethrough understanding basedassimilation, no parrot fashion learning by rote here.

And lastly, detail in every aspect of how we conduct business fromfirst contact, interaction, communication and on-going service, we know our clientsappreciate the unique culture created at ADC.

In our advertising we liken ourapproach to that adopted in thefield of motor sport, where teamscombine multiple disciplines toengineer a race winning performance. ADC takes the chequered flag when our engineered performance leads to asafer more productive rig facility.

We trust the following pagesdemonstrate our drive and commitment to this most important of areas in theOil and Gas industry.

rig inspection services

THE MAJOR CONCERN within the rigcommunity is downtime, its length, andhow it’s managed. Excessive downtimebrings economic concerns, whilst restricted downtime impacts on HSE.What is abundantly obvious is that allactivities undertaken during the downtime window need to be efficientand effective, so as to achieve maximumresults within the smallest time frame.

It is because of this fundamentalrequirement, that all ADC Rig Inspectionsutilise the unique TRAMS reporting system as the vehicle by which allinspections are conducted and completed.

Taking the motor racing analogy,TRAMS represents the race car whilstour dedicated teams of PrincipalSpecialist Engineers become the drivers. Working together their performance produces a more efficient, streamlined inspection, with the resulting report benefitting fromconsistent content, clearly identifiedclose-out checklists and a dramaticallytighter inspection and reporting timeline.

TRAMS based inspections can be tailored to specific client needs and canbe applied to any stage of the life cycleof a rig.

COMMISSIONINGAND ACCEPTANCE TESTINGFor new builds, we send specialistteams to shipyards to oversee andobserve the rig building process. From their report we not only prepareacceptance testing procedures for theindividual safety systems, but also operational and endurance testing protocols, to ensure the rig is ‘fit for

purpose’ and operationally ready for itsfirst drilling assignment.

PRE-CHARTERInspections focusing on a contractor’ssystems and equipment, which includecomprehensive surveying and reportingof all rig-based systems and equipment,to assess the condition and work toensure everything is ‘fit for purpose’ andunplanned downtime is avoided.

IN SERVICEWorking proactively with the contractor, inspections monitor and measure in-service performance against agreedclient criteria, with analysis of all safetycritical elements (SCE’s) adhering tothe FARSI performance model of:Functionality, Availability, Reliability,Survivability and Interactions.

In addition to TRAMS, ADC’s risk related services employ their awardwinning software system RISKELIMIN8.Representing what effectively has toooften been the ‘missing link’ in the inspection cycle, RISKELIMIN8processes all non-conformances ordeficiency lists from a rig and BOPinspection or survey. Through a systematic evaluation and prioritisationof possible risks, their consequencesand probability, a report is generatedenabling the rig operator to address andclose-out sufficient non-conformancesto eliminate the risk of compromisingtheir scope of work due to unexpectedsystems or equipment failure.

The priority of all our inspection servicesis to ascertain a rig’s operability and reliability, together with its impact interms of safety on the crew and theenvironment.

TRAMSTechnical Rig Audit ManagementSystem, think of it as a hub:

...a HUB where reports, standardisedto the highest level can exist forevery rig and rig equipment.

...a HUB where one can analyse andcompare rigs and view the efficiency of drilling contractors.

....a HUB flexible and dynamic, ableto react to initiatives such asAPIS53.

....a HUB supported and endorsed bythe industry as it constitutes a leapforward in standardisation.

TRAMS - establishes a global standard for rig inspection reporting;reporting based on classic audit procedure in accordance with ISO 19011.

TRAMS - streamlined to save valuable time and money, with transparency and traceability at itscore.

TRAMS - reporting with evaluation at its heart, enabling continuous monitoring to check progress of theclose-out of identified and agreednon-conformances.

TRAMS - a service where everyreport for every rig is available toevery member of TRAMS, so thatduplicate inspection is dramaticallyreduced saving valuable time andmoney.

TRAMS - a service unique to theclients of ADC.

BOP & WELL CONTROLEQUIPMENT (SURFACE &SUBSURFACE) INSPECTION

ARGUABLY THE MOST significant area on any rig, BOP and well control constitutes the high risk part of any oiland gas extraction process. To this end ADC have developed a dedicated division whose sole remit is tospecialise in inspecting and identifyingpotential risk, analyse consequenceand provide corrective actions so as toeliminate the potential negative impacton cost, time and safety.

Managed by personnel with over 20years specific well control experience, and supported by the most technologicallyadvanced communication systems,ADC’s BOP & Well Control Divisioninspections, utilise ADC’s uniqueTRAMS (Technical Reporting Audit Management System) as well as adhering to all relevant API specificationand recommended practice documents, and specific manufacturer’s operational manuals, which include:

API STANDARD 53: 4th edition, 2012API SPEC 16QAPI SPEC 17DAPI RP-7HU1API RP-16STAPI RP-49API RP-59API RP-64API RP-7L

We believe it’s essential to involve andwork with the rig contractor during theinspection process. In reviewing

DRILLING RIG ACCEPTANCE TESTING & ENGINEERINGPROJECT SUPPORT

WHETHER A RIG is new from the yardor simply refurbished, our independentacceptance testing can not only ascertain whether it is ‘fit for purpose’complying with identified standards andpre-set contractual agreements, butalso gauge the potential likelihood offuture downtime resulting from equipment or systems failure.

In fact, even before it takes to the waterADC can be fully involved at the construction phase, monitoring buildand witnessing FAT (FactoryAcceptance Testing) of the individualequipment components, and SIT(System Integrity Testing) to ensurethe unit system complies with designprior to commencing service.

Our extensive experience in projectsupport is of particular benefit whenproviding assistance in the followingareas:

Perform design review and verification.Review manufacturing procedure, quality control and quality assurance procedures.Perform stage inspection at construction stage.Review FAT procedures and acceptance criteria.Review SIT acceptance test procedures and acceptance criteria.Verification of documentationcertification of Rig up and Rig down procedures.Formulate rig function test andfinal acceptance procedures.

existing maintenance records andinspection reports, our engineers canadvise on shortcomings and help support and encourage best practice.

COMPLETE DROPPED OBJECT SERVICES

ADC‘s pioneering, multi-facetedDropped Object Services are designedto eliminate dropped objects throughoutthe complete value chain. Through theutilisation of experienced engineers, trained (ISO 9001) lead auditors andground breaking reporting software(DREEMSAT), a whole new level ofDROPS management is now available.

A D C D R O P S S E R V I C E S P R O V I D EEQUIPMENT EXAMINATIONIn addition to the normal inventory ofancillary equipment inspected, our timeserved oilfield engineers examine majordrilling and lifting equipment systems,and associated PM records, to ensurethat undesirable and often catastrophicfailures are avoided.

ANTI-COLLISION AND INTEGRATEDCONTROL SYSTEMS Failure of integrated control systemsand related software can lead to majoror catastrophic dropped object events.ADC’s DREEMSAT (DROPS EngineeringExamination & Management SystemAssessment Tool) is used to validateand ensure systems are fully enabledand operable, and that reset procedures and control level authoritiesand competencies are appropriate.

INSTALLATION MANAGEMENT ADC is fully proficient in the developmentand implementation of bespokeDropped Object Management Systems, which are a key element of droppedobject control. They utilise all industryrecommended components includingpicture-based scheduled maintenancechecklists, to facilitate regular droppedobject surveys by installation personnel.

TRAININGEducation is the key to changing a culture, and to that end ADC can develop a training course which isinstallation specific, and can not only bedirected to all levels of personnel, butequally focused on individual roles.Being a founder member and activeparticipant of the international DROPSwork group, ADC are leading the way inhelping to create a safer global workingenvironment.

Analysis is carried out by a combinationof detailed mechanical investigation ofthe failed components and complexengineering modelling, including finiteelement analysis.

SAFETY & ENVIRONMENTAL SURVEY SERVICES

BY THE VERY nature of its operation, adrill rig poses many potential problemsfor human and environmental health. And it’s not just the obvious headlinegrabbing incidents that can have a significant impact. Excessive waste, toxic spills, compromised drainage systems all carry a negative consequence in terms of personnel, their immediate area of operation andpotentially the wider environment .ADC’s survey services address allaspects of Health and EnvironmentalManagement systems, as well asHealth and Safety arrangements. As amajor weapon in their survey arsenal, and bespoke to ADC, they are able toemploy their unique EnvironmentalCompliance and Containment Tool(ECCAT). ECCAT examines the criteriato gain ISO14001 accreditation ‘on-site’,and also to meet the Energy Instituteguidance for the identification andmanagement of environmentally criticalelements. ECCAT identifies the generalrequirements of the rig’s environmentalpolicies, planning and implementationalong with the management of corrective actions, including all relevant equipment and hardware, to ensure therig is equipped to stop and manage thethreat of an environmental spill.

Exhaustive in its operation and reporting, ECCAT was recently used toexamine an ISO14001 accredited drillrig before commencing operation.Findings showed up several issueswhich potentially would have caused aloss of containment to the sea whichinevitably would have resulted in a lossof operating permit and reputation.ADC Safety & Environmental surveyservices must rank as the most practical, sophisticated and comprehensive available anywhere in the world.

prioritisation of possible risks, their consequences and probability, a reportis generated enabling the rig operatorto address and close-out sufficient non-conformances, so as to eliminatethe risk of compromising their scope ofwork due to unexpected systems or equipment failure.

WELL EXAMINATION

ADC DEVELOPED their first well examination scheme in 1996 inresponse to a number of clientapproaches including Lloyds Registerand DNV, who required a competent, independent organisation to provideservices compliant with present UK legislation SI 913.

The legislation in question requires thatthe well is so designed, modified, commissioned, constructed, equipped, operated, maintained, suspended andabandoned, so that the risks are as lowas reasonably practicable.

To facilitate this legislative requirementADC’s specialist engineers areequipped to:

Identify and justify all safety critical elements of a well.Write the schemes of examination to comply with legislation.Execute the examination with independent competent engineers.Monitor operations as per the scheme.Confirm the BOD, programme and operation are harmonised.Interface with the verification management system.Monitor the management of change as it is proposed.Document and manage the process.

RISK ASSESSMENT, FACILITATION &MANAGEMENT SERVICES

MANAGING RISK must constitute oneof the most important areas within the Oil and Gas industry. Get it right andoutput and profitability are assured, getit wrong and both are jeopardised withpotentially very serious consequences. At ADC we understand the significantimpact Risk Management can have onbusiness performance. Our servicesprovide a systematic evaluation ofpotential risks, their consequences andprobability through the application of aqualitative assessment of equipment, processes and well design. The earlyidentification and intervention toresolve risk not only ensures projectsstay on schedule and budget, but alsopromote greater ownership and partnership between client and contractor.

The benefits of ADC Risk Facilitationservices:

Over 28 years experience in providing specialist Risk Assessment means it’s unlikely there’s nothing we haven’t seen.As a third party facilitator we provide essential impartiality.More effective control of deadlines and deliverables.Proactive management of identified threats, be they project or financial. The application of consistency throughout the whole Risk Management project.Customisation of the Risk Assessment process to clients’ specific requirements.Identification of key factors such as ‘opportunities’ and ‘lessons learnt’.

Adding a unique dimension to all ofADC’s Risk related services is theiraward winning software system RISKELIMIN8, it represents what effectively has too often been the ‘missing link’ in the inspection process.

RISKELIMIN8 essentially processes allnon-conformances or deficiency listsfrom a rig and BOP inspection or survey.Through a systematic evaluation and

THERMAL IMAGING

UNEXPECTED FAILURE of crucial systems is perhaps one of the biggestheadaches on a rig. The resulting downtime and compromise of safetycan be extremely costly. It is because of this that ADC offer a full thermalimaging study of all crucial systems aspart of their Rig Inspection services.

Using the latest thermal imaging hardware, software and training, theservice effectively troubleshoots key equipment such as: motors, pumps, gearboxes, bearings, engines, generators and electrical systems.Going where the naked eye can’t, theimaging technology can detect a faultlong before any symptoms have developed, and present it in a form easily understood by on-board maintenance teams.

DYNAMIC POSITIONING AUDITS

THE THREAT OF ‘single point failures’ with their consequential impact on operational sustainability and safety, represent the single most commonreason why ADC DP Audits are indemand around the world.

Undertaken by specialist naval architects and engineers who shareconsiderable expertise in the area ofDP, the audit covers all types of drillingrig and offshore vessels and is compliant to current industry standards:

The scope of an ADC DP audit wouldtypically include:

Verification of the DP operator’s experience and qualifications.Identification of any DP maintenance issues or resultant actions.Testing of all electrical, computer and mechanical systems.Testing of DP communications.Running of comprehensive DP trials including: Emergency stop, thrusters, reference systems and sensors.Testing of all inter-relational DP systems.
