Six days after the CentralBureau of Investigation(CBI) filed a chargesheet

in the Ishrat Jehan Fake En-counter Case accusing six po-licemen, Ishrat’s family onThursday alleged that therewas a threat to their lives. This comes from advocate

Vrinda Grover, who repre-sents Shamima Kauser, mother of Ishrat Jehan, aswell as RaufLala and Mohin-uddin Ismail Sayyed, whohave for the last 9 years sup-ported the family in its strug-gle for justice. According to aletter written by advocateGrover to the Union HomeSecretary Anil Goswami onThursday, “The CBI chargesheethas named senior Gujarat Po-lice officers as accused in thekilling of Ishrat Jehan andothers. Further investigationinto the conspiracy behindthese murders, and the evi-dence recorded by the CBI,points towards the complicityof senior officers of the Intel-ligence Bureau and politicalleaders of Gujarat state. On July 10, 2013 the local

Mumbra Policewas informedabout the threat to ShamimaKauser and her children. Ac-cordingly policemen wereposted at the gate of thebuilding in which Shamimaresides. My client ShamimaKauser has informedme thatin the dead of the night, ataround 2:30am on July 11,2013, 4-5 men came andstarted banging on the doorof their flat, aggressively de-

manding that the door of thehouse be opened. Uponbeing asked by Shamima toidentify themselves and theirpurpose, they kept bangingthe door. After some time, these men announced thatthey were from the police.Shamima refused to open thedoor as it was clear that thesemen had come to bring harmto her and her young chil-dren. These 4-5 men keptstanding outside Shamima’sdoor for some time talking inwhispers to each other andthen left. Clearly their pur-pose to terrorise Shamimaand her children had beenaccomplished.”The letter further added, “It

is a well known public factthat after the demise of herhusband, Shamima heads afamily of young daughtersand sons. Shamima and herdaughter have courageouslybeen speaking about justicefor Ishrat Jehan public meet-ings and demanding punish-ment for all personsresponsible for her killing, re-gardless of their official posi-tion. Many of the powerfulaccused are yet to be arrestedin this case. The CBI hasrightfully sought protectionfor its own investigating offi-cers, but has not paid any at-tention to the vulnerability ofShamima Kauser, her chil-dren and RaufLala and Mo-hinuddin Ismail Sayyed.Even in the past, attempts

have been made on the life ofShamima Kauser, RaufLalaand Mohinuddin IsmailSayyed. Despite written and

verbal complaints to the po-lice and the CBI no serious ac-tion or enquiry has beeninitiated into the matter. Onthe night of June 18 or 19th,2013, the vehicle carryingShamima Kauser, RaufLalaandMohinuddin Ismail Sayedwas attacked by armedmen. However, the said incident

was registered as an FIR of aroad accident. ShamimaKauser and her children havealso reported that they arebeing followed and men inmotorcycles are keeping awatch on their home and

their movements. There is a grave threat to

Shamima Kauser (mother ofdeceased Ishrat Jehan) andher children as well as Rau-fLala and Mohinuddin IsmailSayyed. There is a real appre-hension that attempts will bemade to threaten, terrorise, in-timidate and harm ShamimaKauser and her children aswell as RaufLala and Mohin-uddin Ismail Sayyed to coerceand compel them to abandontheir efforts to secure justicefor the cold bloodedmurder ofIshrat Jehan.”

While the BMC has managed tobring down the cases of swine

flu to zero this July from 151 casesin July last year, cholera and gas-troenteritis seem to have grippedthe city.Going by the statistics given by

the BMC, there were 1652 cases ofgastroenteritis in themonth of Julylast year while this year, in the firstten days of July, the city hasrecorded 685 cases of gastroenteri-tis already. Cholera, which hadn’tpresented itself at all last year, hasalready affected 20 people over twomonths this year.

“There have been no cases ofswine flu this month. But there is aslight increase in the cases of gas-troenteritis, while cases of choleraare also surfacing. However theseare sporadic and there is no fear ofan outbreak or no reason to panic,”said Additional Municipal Com-missioner Manisha Mhaiskar.Dengue, which has also been a

matter of concern for the city, af-fected 60 people in July last year,

while 15 cases have been recordedin the first ten days of July this year.Five deaths due to dengue were

recorded last year, while this yearthere have been no deaths in theBMC jurisdiction as yet. However, the disease has claimed two lives intheGreaterMumbai in the last fort-night. A 43-year-old man at BhaktiVedantaHospital inMira Road diedon July 3 while a 9-year-old boyfrom Vasai died in Hinduja Hospi-tal on July 6 due to complicationsarising out of dengue.

“As these cases are not fromMumbai, they can not be countedas deaths in Mumbai,” saidMhaiskar.

SPECIAL REPORTTHE CONFLICTThe Sanjay Gandhi National Park isaround 103 sq km in size and ishome to leopards and other wildanimals and human beings (bothliving legally and illegally) for a longtime. Sunil Limaye, Chief Conserva-tor of Forests and Director, SGNPsaid, “There is no shortage of foodwithin the park. There are plenty ofCheetal and Sambar deer, but theyare attracted to dogs as they areeasy food for them.” These straysare commonly found near humansettlements and of course garbagebecause of which they are movingalarmingly closer toward humansettlements and buildings. Accord-ing toVidya Athreya, Ecologist withWCS-India and Co-ordinator,Mumbaikars for Sanjay Gandhi Na-tional Park (MfSGNP), “Every leop-ard eats about 1 dog per week. There are about 700 dogs in AareyMilk colony alone which is a smallarea about 13 sq km to the southwest of the park. There are unveri-fied reports by residents that theBMC releases stray dogs here.” Thegarbage andmeat disposal here toois a big issue which is attractingdogs even more. Another cause ofconflict, Athreya adds, was the re-lease of leopards (caught anywhere)into SGNP till 2005. Moving themaway from their homes causedproblems of adjustment as they areterritorial by nature. It was alsofound that most attacks happenednear release sites. Currently thereare around 21 leopards in the parkand incidents of attack have re-duced considerably.

DECODING THE LEOPARD“Contrary to what most peoplefeel,” Athreya adds, “Leopards arevery shy animals and are scared ofhuman beings. They will run awayand hide on seeing humans.” Theremay be a few stray cases of leopardsinjuring humans, but in general, itis important to remember that leop-ards will not instinctively attack hu-mans or come after them unlessprovoked.

ON TRAPPINGTrapping an animal and releasing itelsewhere was considered a solu-tion for a long time, but it onlymade matters worse. Says Athreya,“When you remove a leopard froman area, others come in and fill thevacant territory. If amother is sepa-rated fromher cubs, the cub is likelyto create problems.” So it is best notto trap an animal that has causedno harm. A trapped animal whichhas not hurt humans should be re-leased closer to its home whereasanimals captured after purposefulattacks on humans should never bereleased. Moving it to another area

causes problems of adjustment forthem and may lead to attacks.Athreya also adds that when the an-imal is caged it very often injures it-self on colliding against the metal

bars and maggots infest thewounds. Also, leopards are very ter-ritorial and are not prone to multi-plying in areas or numbers easilysince internally they control theirpopulations, with older animalskilling the sub-adults who are insearch of new territories.

POLICE AND TACKLING THELEOPARD SITUATION:Members of MfSGNP visited andspoke to police personnel in sur-rounding stations to sensitize themon how to deal with the human-leopard conflict. Dipti Humraskar,Ecologist and member of MfSGNPsaid, “36 police personnel in 13 po-lice stations around the NationalPark have been alerted about theproblem. In worse situations whena mob has formed, the police can

declare Section 144 of the CriminalProcedure Code (CrPC) when thereis any problem caused by leopard-human interaction, to control thecrowds."Deputy Commissioner of Police,

Zone 11, Pravin Patil, said, “Peopleare unable to differentiate betweenpolice officers and forest officers. Inmany situations we even rescue theleopard if it is stuck somewhere.Theillegal shanties inside the SGNP arethe biggest problem. We give train-ing to our police officers to attendand visit the site when they receivea call from the control room. Ourmain intention is to divert the con-flict between leopards and humanbeings. In the last 2-3 months we

have not received any call about anykind of conflict. Most of the con-flicts happen in AareyMilk Colony.”

ATTACKS (INCLUDINGINJURIES AND DEATHS):

1997-1998 24 attacks2002 – 2004 84 attacks1986 – 2010 avg attack on humans 71997-98 avg attacks on humans 122002-04 avg attacks on humans 282005-10 avg attacks on humans 2

PRACTICAL STEPS TOSAFEGUARD YOURSELF Stay alert at night. Do not leave children unsuper-vised. Make sure they don’t wan-der and it is best to keep themindoors at night and under con-stant supervision

Do not move around in the darkalone. Make sure you are accom-panied by someone.

Make sure to create some noisewhich keeps the leopard awarethat you are around.

Leopards are attracted to dogs, somake sure your dog is safe athome at all times and not run-ning around freely in the colony.

Garbage needs to be disposed offefficiently as this is probably themostmajor problem and cause ofconflict.

FORWARD ACTIONAccording to Athreya, “There is noeasy solution and there will alwaysbe instances of incidents. Resi-dents need to ensure that theirown surroundings are clean, thatgarbage is dealt with efficientlyand children are not outside afterdark and that play area has adultssupervising the children as well asis well lit. The garbage issue can be

sorted out through composting orcreating a pit for the garbage oreven by using good garbage bins, that dogs can’t get to. In terms ofthe problem of encroachmentspertaining to SGNP, the govern-ment is dealing with them very se-riously. ”It is essential to remember that

the leopards have always lived herelong before the city of Mumbai ar-rived at their doorstep. Humans andwild animals have been co-existingpeacefully for eons in rural areas. Aswe slowly encroach on the land thatthey have been living on for years,we are forcing them to stray andstray they do, right back, closer toour homes.

ADJUSTING WITHTHE ADAPTABLE CAT

Legislator Ravindra Waikar, who is representingGoregaon East, that encompasses some part of theNational Park, alleged that the state and the BMC arenot taking action against mushrooming illegalconstruction at the Aarey Colony. Waikar said, "Somepersons have encroached into the forest areas andconsequently the animals are entering into humanhabitat, thanks to which school-going students andsenior citizens out on morning walks are becomingvictims of attacks. I have raised this issue in theassembly and have requested to set up a 'RescueCenter' inside Aarey Colony. In case any wild animalenters residential areas, the rescue center will trapthe animal."

"The state has advised against taming like poultry, goats and dogs, as they tempt wild cats into coming

here. In recent times, leopards have come right uptothe ONGC colony. Its high time we resolved theissue," he added. Civic health officials have denieddropping off stray dogs inside the park area.

Mumbai has been facing a conflict with leopards especially in the areas surrounding theSanjay Gandhi National Park. With forest and open spaces slowly disappearing at the edgesof the park, the easily adaptable, shy, wild cat has been increasingly in the news for the

wrong reasons, especially for its so called ‘encroachment’ on human land. With the spate ofleopard sightings raising a storm, environmentalists are struggling to find a solution thatwill not only conserve the species but also help both human and animal co-exist better,

reports Gayatri Sahasrabuddhe

“If you spot a leopard, the first thingyou should do is go inside your home tosafety,” says Athreya. A mere sightingdoes not necessarily translate into adangerous situation. Recognise thatleopards are resident of the area andremember that leopards are scared ofhumans and will not attack unlessprovoked. In case of an emergency

situation (not just a sighting), call upthe police or Forest Department tohandle the situation. Do not create acommotion or stir up a crowd.Cornering the animal will only provokeit and scare it, making the situationmore dangerous. Your best bet is tostay indoors for the safety of yourselfand your family.

Eternal vigilance…City police conductsmock drill inside BKCpolice station after anIM post threatens totarget MumbaiBy Zuber Ansari

Taking heed of a tweet on@ I n d i a nMu j a h i d i n

posted on July 6 – a day be-fore the Bodh Gaya blasts inBihar – in which the organi-sation mentions Mumbai asits next target, the city policeconducted amock drill insidethe Bandra Kurla Complex

(BKC) police station to makesure everyone knows how toreact during an emergency.Since the city has always

been a soft target for terroristoutfits the police do not wantto take any chances. At around 2 p.m. a surprise

mock drill was organised bythe DCP inside the BKC po-lice station. The drill began

when one of the constablessuddenly started requestingpolice officers as well citizenswho had come to the policestation to file complaints toevacuate the building. Thoseinside the building were toldthat a mysterious bag hadbeen found, and that it mayhave an explosive device hid-den within.

Within 30 minutes, a dogsquad and bomb disposalsquads came to the spot totackle with the situation.Deputy Commissioner of

Police Zone VIII, NamdevChavan, said, “It is our firstmock drill which we are con-ducting after the Bodh Gayablast, it was organised be-cause we wanted to see howour officers and commonman will react if really theywill come to know about thebomb, we are ready to tacklewith any emergency after IMthreat call.“We were unaware about

the mock drill. So when oneof our constables asked us toevacuate the police station ataround 2 p.m. we werescared. But wewere informedlater that the whole incidentwas a mock drill,” said a con-stable attached to BKC policestation. It has to be noted that,

hours after the earlymorningblasts at theMahabodhiTem-ple in BodhGaya on July 07, atweet on the account hadclaimed responsibility for theattack, and subsequentlythey threatened to targetMumbai in the next weekor so.

After the ADC reportedabout students beingcrammed into class-

rooms, the issue was takenup at the Academic Councilof Mumbai University, whichauthorized the extension ofdivisions for various degree

courses in several collegesin the city. The ADC had reported

(‘Packed like sardines’ June22) that city colleges hadbeen crossing the studentlimit per class for degree col-lege courses, where two divi-sions were merged into oneforcing almost 140 students

to accommodate themselvesin a class made for 75.Madhu Nair, Member of

the Management Council,MU said, "It is a relief for col-leges. Previously colleges had

to manage the excess of stu-dents in one division, but astwo divisions have been de-clared by the cabinetministryof Maharashtra, colleges canhave spacious classroomsand follow the varsity rules ofthemaximumnumber of stu-dents per classroom".The cabinet ministry has

declared that Mumbai andPuneUniversities, which hadan excess of students in acourse and had requested thestate government for an in-crease in the number of divi-sions, have been allottedextra divisions. 10 city col-leges falling into this criterion

have therefore been allowedto have an extra division forthe concerned courses. When the ADC spoke toDr.

T. Shivare, Chairman, Non-Grants College Association,he said, “The declaration ofseats was actually needed.Colleges can now systemati-cally divide students intomore divisions, rather thanmaking classrooms crowdedand uncomfortable for stu-dents. The varsity should alsokeep inmind that colleges donot take advantage of thegiven divisions and enrollmore students than the limitof admissions and class-

rooms according to the MUrules."The recent admissions and

fewer divisions hadmade it ahard task for teachers toteach in overcrowded class-rooms.Dr. Nareshchandra, Pro

Vice Chancellor, MU, said,“City colleges will now nothave a problem of divisions, and the varsity will see to itthat none of the colleges takeadvantage. The Local Investi-gation Committee (LIC) ofMUwill be keeping a track ofthe records of the added divi-sions and admissions".

He added thatthe NCP will adhere to whateverstand the government takes at theall party meeting, and that of theParliament. Mallik however wasquick to point out that several

times, politicians across politicalparties stage agitations and arebooked for violations of the law.Maharashtra Pradesh Congress

Committee (MPCC) spokespersonAnant Gadgil stated that the Con-gress welcomed the judgment inprinciple. He argued that the judg-ment is silent on what happens ifa candidate is declared disquali-fied and is subsequently found notguilty by the higher courts. Gadgiladded that the voter needs to bemore cautious and not vote for atainted candidate.Shiv Sena spokeswoman, Dr.

Neelam Gorhe, while advocatingthe supremacy of the parliament tomake laws, termed the judgment asamilestone. She added that it is theparty’s decision to field a particularcandidate in the elections. She saidthat the parliament was thesupreme legislative body to makelaws and until it makes such a law,one will have to abide by the ver-dict. Dr. Gorhe further added thatthe intention of the SC verdict isgood in barring criminals from en-tering politics.

The most sensational news concerningthe media – which many newspaperssadly did not cover – is the decision of

the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India(TRAI) to recommend curbing corporate con-trol of the media, while pointing to the com-plexities in operationalising it. It would seemthat there is talk of creating “an institutionalbuffer” between corporate owners and edito-rial management of the media. All this hasstirred up a measly controversy. One charge is that corporate control over

media content has distorted democraticpractices through ‘paid news’ and that “withthe line between news, views and propa-ganda blurred, readers are misled”. And BigBusiness has one more tool to influence thepolitical system. Many issues arise in thiscontext of TRAI’s recommendation. One, set-ting up a newspaper costs crores of rupees.Where is it to come from? Anybody whowants to pitch in with financial assistancewould be a rich idealist or a pucca business-manwhowants returns for themoney he hasinvested; even the Congress-supported Na-tional Herald had at one time to close down. So, when someone – may be a CorporateGroup – cough up the cash, one presumesthat it wants something in return inwhichever way.

What is News?Paid News could be just one part of that ob-jective. Here one comes across the question:What is News? Anyone who reads about adozen newspapers daily – as I do – wouldknow that no two papers carry the samenews. If all carried the same news items, whydowe need thatmany newspapers? Can’t justbe one enough. What this shows is that therecan be – and indeed are – different conceptsof ‘news’. Everything depends, in the end, onthe news editor. In such circumstances, canone charge him with ‘bias’? In the end thechoice of what goes into print is the final re-sponsibility of one man. And no matter howtrained he (or she) is, in the ultimate analysis, the responsibility rests on one shoulder.Anyone charged with covering an event

surely is conscious that no matter how ‘ob-jective’ he is, his conscience reminds him thathemay not always have all the facts on hand.Reporters know only too well their limita-tions. But that still does not answer the ques-tion what constitutes ‘news’. The same‘information’ can be interpreted in differentways. It is only in a communist state that whatmakes ‘news’ is laid down by the government

and editors have no choice but to obey theguide lines laid down. In a democratic coun-try, a corporate body also should have theright to present news – or such information itfeels the reader should have access to, or elsewhat is democracy all about? To argue that the financier of a paper

should have no right to control what shouldgo into a newspage but should leave it strictlyto the editor is to live in a dream world. Be-

sides what makes one think that the editorhas no political or socio-economic and otherbiases? Lies are propagated, politicians aresought to be dragged in the mud, as in thecase of Narendra Modi and no one has ques-tioned the Goebellian mindset of our allegedsecularists determined to destroy a goodman’s character. And, surely, one is aware ofthe Neera Radia tapes?Vice President Hamid Ansari in an address

to the biennial session of the National Unionof Journalists held in Junemade the point thatthe autonomy of the editorial staff must beupheld. With all due respect toMr. Ansari andto my own fellowmen and colleagues, in theprofession, it is only too unfair. Besides, whoamong the ‘staff’ will have the right to decidewhat makes news? The Editor? The News Edi-tor? The Chief Reporter? And what if all ofthem decide together to damn the very indi-vidual or corporate body who pays for theirbread and butter? What kind of logic is that?Furthermore are we to presume that all

corporate bodies are run by unprincipled in-dividuals? There are 80,000-plus registeredpublications in India and 800 plus TV chan-nels.What makes sense is for a financier of apaper appointing an editor with who he haseasy and complete rapport, and both enjoymutual trust. Then the question of appoint-ing a statutory Media Council does not arise. To presume that editorial staffs are by def-

inition unbiased is pure nonsense. Among re-porters onemay be inclined towards the Con-gress, another towards the BJP, a third is intune with Maoist sentiments and so on, onlyto end up inmessing up news coverage; prob-ably that does not occur to our idealists. Inthe end there should be only one to lay downthe law, whichever way, so that there is con-sistency in the pages and the smart readerknows what to expect. To quote The Economic Times (June 20),

“why presume an editor is more ethical thanthe publisher?” The ideal situation is one inwhich the publisher, the editor, the editorialstaff right down to the juniormost reporterare all ideologically one. It should also bepointed out that it is sheer arrogance to pre-sume that corporate bodies are evil by natureand should be prevented from owning publi-cations. The EconomicTimes insists “that thebasis of free speech is the right to start a pub-lication to express one’s views” and the TRAIproposal “to barricade the editorial sectionfrom the publisher would destroy this foun-dation.”

Error of omisssion, commissionThere are many ways in which reporters aremade to stay on course with the publisher’sviews. One way is to hire them on “contract”.It is a standing threat to the reporter that if heis out of tune with the management’s needshe can be easily shown the door. The best wayto make the media transparent is four-fold:one, on the editorial page as well as on frontpage, it must be clearly stated that the news-paper is the property of the concerned cor-porate body which alone has the right tochoose news. Two, all staff members must beemployed on a permanent basis and not oncontract and any dismissal should be ade-quately recompensed. Three, that it is theproprietor and not the editor who is legallyresponsible for any error of omission andcommission. And four, what goes for PaidNewsmust be clearly admitted by the end useof the initials CBC (Certified by Corporation). The Hindu (June 16) carried a report that

said Vice President Hamid Ansari has con-demned “propagation of biased analysis andforecast, both in the political arena as well asthe corporate sector and irresponsible report-ing to create sensationalism.” This is a matterfor the Press Council of India to evaluate. Butit is clear that Mr. Ansari should work in anewspaper office, even for fun, to knowwhat ittakes to bring out a daily paper. His recom-mendationsmay then be takenmore seriously.

All editorial staff arenot unbiased

No place forlawbreakers in

House of lawmakersIT is indeed a shame that a largenumber of lawmakers — in Parlia-ment and state assemblies — arelawbreakers: they have criminalcharges against them and are facingcases in court. All political partiesgive poll tickets to criminals whopossess the necessary means —money and muscle power — to winelections. How can any civilised society have

a Parliament with criminals? It is in-deed a diabolical joke that criminalscan sit in Parliament andmake laws. The verdict of the Supreme Court

passed a couple of days ago is likelyto help in themost undesirable situ-ation. The Supreme Court has or-dered that themoment anymemberis convicted, he should be sus-pended from Parliament. An appealto a higher court willnot allow a member to continue tosit in parliament. All political parties havewelcomed

the decision. The practice of givingpoll tickets to those against whomthere are criminal cases may stopthanks to the directive of theSupreme Court. It is to be seen what political par-

ties will do when 2014 Lok Sabhapolls will be held. It looks like politi-cians cannot dowithout the supportof criminals: They may decide to as-sociate them in some way with theelections.

CONFUCIANISM is often characterized asa systemof social and ethical philosophy

rather than a religion. In fact, Confucianismbuilt on an ancient religious foundation toestablish the social values, institutions, andtranscendent ideals of traditional Chinesesociety. It waswhat sociologist Robert Bellahcalled a ‘civil religion’, the sense of religiousidentity and commonmoral understandingat the foundation of a society’s central insti-tutions. It is also what a Chinese sociologistcalled a ‘diffused religion’; its institutionswere not a separate church, but those of so-ciety, family, school, and state; its priestswere not separate liturgical specialists, butparents, teachers, and officials. Confucian-ismwas part of the Chinese social fabric andway of life; to Confucians, everyday life was

the arena of religion. The founder of Confucianism, Master

Kong (K’ung, Confucius, 551-479 B.C.E.) didnot intend to found a new religion, but to in-terpret and revive the unnamed religion ofthe Zhou (Chou) dynasty, underwhichmanypeople thought the ancient system of reli-

gious rule was bankrupt; why couldn’t thegods prevent the social upheavals? Theburning issue of the day was: If it is not theancestral and nature spirits, what then is thebasis of a stable, unified, and enduring so-cial order? The dominant view of the day, es-poused by Realists and Legalists, was thatstrict law and statecraft were the bases of

sound policy.Confucius, however, believed that the

basis lay in Zhou religion, in its rituals (li). Heinterpreted these not as sacrifices asking forthe blessings of the gods, but as ceremoniesperformed by human agents and embody-ing the civilized and cultured patterns of be-havior developed through generations ofhuman wisdom. They embodied, for him,the ethical core of Chinese society. Moreover,Confucius applied the term “ritual” to ac-tions beyond the formal sacrifices and reli-gious ceremonies to include social rituals:courtesies and accepted standards of behav-ior — what we today call social mores. Hesaw these time-honored and traditional rit-uals as the basis of human civilization, andhe felt that only a civilized society could havea stable, unified, and enduring social order.

SRK has set a very bad example!

PRODUCING babies is one’s per-sonal decision but Shah Rukh Khanhas set a bad example by going infor a third child and that toothrough surrogacy. India is a coun-try with teeming millions wherefamily planning is the need of thehour. India would overtake Chinathis decade as far as populationgoes and population explosion inour country is our biggest problem. Also, surrogacymethod should be

used in extreme cases only whencouples are unable to have kids orwhen risk to the mother is involvedduring pregnancy. It has legal prob-lems as well as the mother givesbirth in another woman’s body andis it worth having kids in suchman-ner when the whole process is sopainful and controversial?Adoption is the best option for

couples who are unable to conceiveand deliver on their own. It satisfies

a social obligation as well by givinga home to an orphan child andchecking population numbers aswell. Celebrities like Shah Rukh andAamir Khan should have taken aleaf from the filmdom colleagueslike Sushmita Sen and Raveen Tan-don who have adopted kids in thepast to add to their family. Sports-men, actors and other celebritiesshould adopt kids and act as brandambassadors for ‘Adoption’ so thatothers too follow it, whichwould begood for our country!

Digvijay’s no match for ModiIt is observed from a TV channel’sreport that Digvijay Singh, who hasbeen in the habit of deliberatelyspeaking without any conviction orconcern to the problems adverselyaffecting the people is challengingModi to debate with him. Modi isprojected as the face of the BJP tolead the campaign for the ensuingParliamentary polls, whereas theCongress has not projected him asanything or in any capacity as yetand there is no likelihood of anysuch projection either. There is totallack of logic andModi cannot affordtowaste his precious timewith suchfactotums of this decrepit Govt., im-mersed in huge scams and cluelessonmany critical issues. It is themis-take of the TV channel to give op-portunity to such people tobrazenly defend the indefensiblewhich certainly is tantamount tomocking and ridiculing people'sability to perceive, intended tomis-leading them. Dress code for bar girls?THE Congress govt. of Karnataka isreportedly implementing a schemewhich would ensure a certain dresscode for bar girls in the State. Justbefore the Assembly elections, oneof the main planks during the pollscampaign was the strict oppositionto themoral policing undertaken bysome of the Hindutva outfits. It wasthought to be one of the reasons forthe humiliating defeat of the BJP inthe elections. By this yardstick, arethe bar dancers not at liberty tochoose whatever dress they preferto wear? Why a particular type ofraiment should be imposed onthem? Can the Congress workersask this question to their govt?

School children made to ‘beg’WEare a poor nation and hence ourschools have already begun to teach

children how to beg. Every year, atthe beginning of the academic year, all schools in conjunction withsome NGO – this time it is HelpageIndia – recruit all children to goabout to collectmoney for theNGO.The scheme also has competitions,of course with the usual caveat –Conditions Apply – at least Rs.1,000must be collected. Since each soci-ety has many children from thesame school, there is intense com-petition and it is really pitiable tosee children come at night to ask formoney. Their faces reveal the ten-sion they are under. Will the courtsor some legal eagle file a PIL and putan end to this despicable means ofrecruiting child labour? And let ustake the principals to task for beingan accessory to the crime.

Check the killer landslides

THIS is with reference to the report‘Landslide kills two, injures one’(ADC, July 1). This writer, being ageologist, has in fact pointed out inthis column earlier that landslidesare waiting on the hills for the rainsto come down. This Antop Hill inci-dent therefore does not come as anysurprise and there are a large num-ber of localilties in Mumbai and itssuburbs where hutment coloniesare in real danger of coming underthe rock-slides because the hill-slopes have been destabilised by in-discriminate cutting, removal ofbasal support, overloading, oversat-uration with water, etc., which areall known causes for the rock anddebris slides. The BMC has an ex-haustive inventory of all these vul-nerable spots but, strangely, doesnot go beyond sticking notices forevacuation. This does not help at allbecause the poor people livingthere do not have any alternativeaccommodation to go. It is neces-sary therefore that the corporationwith its astronomical annual budgetof 10,000 crore, draws up a plan forstabilising the hill-slopes in theselocalities using some of the avail-able methods like spraying a ce-ment mixture on the slopes, building a retaining wall below, in-serting steel bolts, placing a net ofsteel wires, etc. No other agency isfinancially equipped to carry out allthese. That “200 people have losttheir lives in landslides in the last 10years” is a gross understatement —about 150 people died in just twolandslides in Chiragnagar,Ghatkopar and Saki Naka, Andheriand every year the slides have beentaking their toll without fail.

THE Supreme Court’s landmarkorder states that MPs and MLAswith criminal convictions will bedisqualified. Better late then never, but it is the best declaration everdone by Supreme Court. We must learn from China,

where in a recent case, an ex-min-ister who was convicted for cor-ruption just two years back hasbeen sentenced to death. In India, we, let go such court

cases against MPs andMLAs go onfor years together, allowing the of-fending peoples’ representatives toenjoy more and more during theirtenure while increasing their bankbalance too.In India, we give votes, we give

them security, we admire them, wegive them full facilities, in spite ofknowing that the concerned per-sons are criminals. The BJP (42 Ministers) and Con-

gress (41Ministers), both are pam-pering such tainted MPs andMLAs, specially BJP is also trying tomake one of this ilk the next PM, ig-noring his serious crime.I am very happy to hear about

the Supreme Court's declarationabout such (majority) MPs andMLAs to be disqualified if they arefound guilty. But the question is toget the whole issue implementedin real and true sense. At least Parliament will be clean

now. Let us hope for the best.—Perin Akolawala,Mumbai

THE historic judgment of theSupreme Court on disqualificationof tainted electedMPs andMLAs isbound to have far reaching conse-

quences on the entire electoral sys-tem of the country. The next thingone can visualise in this situation isthe intervention by the Presidentwith a reference to the ChiefJustice of India. The RashtrapatiBhavanmay seek advisory opinionof the Constitutional Bench of theapex court for interpreting thelandmark verdict.

—ArunMalankar, Kalina

ITS landmark verdict by the apexcourt that the minister has to re-sign from the post, if he foundsguilty by any lower court. Its in-evitable, that the further appealagainst the verdict, would not behelpful to the convicted minister,to keep his post or political statuswith him Its really needful decisionin our county, where many of theMPs and MLAs are with criminalbackground. We are happy that atleast one pillar from the four pillars.i.e. judiciary is doing fine in the in-terest of the nation. Its first masterstroke of broom to wash the dirtypolitical environment.

—Bhavesh Jani, Nala Sopara

AS reported, it is indeed refreshing, encouraging and inspring to knowthat Supreme Courthas passed the verdict by which

MPs and MLAs will be disqualifiedimmediately when found guilty byany court for crimes committedand punished for two years andmore without further appeal, by ahigher court. This is indeed very precious ver-

dict as it will cleanse our rotten po-

litical system where criminals ofvarious kinds are ruling and hold-ing the country to ransom andwhen found guilty go in appeal to ahigher court, the process whichtakes a very long time and in themeanwhile these offenders con-

tinue shamelessly holding on totheir posts, status and enjoy allperks, unaffected. When such a lawis enforced almost more than halfof the existing MPs and MLAscould be disqualified and loosetheir posts and status.Such a worthwhile statement

could also put an end to the age olddictum—‘Justice delayed is justicedenied’. Until nowmost of theMPsand MLAs, when found guilty, would make an appeal to highercourts and sit complacently. Theyalways felt that though they havebeen elected by aam admi they areabove the law and will never bepunished or prosecuted for theirbad deeds. They continued

with their nefarious activities, national crimes and even immoralbehaviour. This will also discourage a lot of

people with criminal backgroundfrom contesting the polls asElection Commissioner will find

it easy to reject applicationsfrom them. The SC verdict bringsa ray of hope into our nationgroping in the darkness full ofhoplessness, corruption andscandals. Kudos to SC for thislandmark verdict.

—S.P. Sharma,Mumbai

THE epoch making judgment ofthe Apex Court about disqualifica-tion of the elected representatives, must have certainly set the greycells of the politicians in a fast for-ward motion. Their parties’ thinktanks must have gone into huddlewith the sole intention of finding away out to circumvent the verdict.

On thismatter, all the political out-fits in the country, irrespective oftheir ideologies, would speak withone voice. All Opposition partiescan now request the govt to go infor a Constitutional Amendmentfor the purpose if necessary, to pro-tect the vested interests of all andsundry.

I WELCOME the landmark rulingof the SupremeCourt that when anMP or MLA is convicted by anycourt in a criminal case, he or shemust be disqualified from theHouse with immediate effect andshould not be allowed to contestthe future election. I am of theopinion that SupremeCourt, at lasthas realised that there are manypolitical leaders with criminalbackground and are ruling in theirown states as well as in the Parlia-ment, dictating their own termsand conditions to remain in powerby hook or crook without bother-ing about the law, thus vilifying theentire political atmosphere andnow the people and the voters ofthe country will have more confi-dence in their representatives, thanks to the SC’s determination tohave politics with a clean imageand more transparency. It is hightime all the political parties followthe Supreme Court order and seeto it that the convicted memberof their party must be disqualifiedand should not be given be allowedto contest polls till their namesare legally cleared of their offence,if at all.

Observing that a child suf-fers an intense psycho-logical trauma if he or

she is expelled or continued inthe same class upon failing inthe final examination, the Bom-bay High Court on Friday dis-missed a public interestlitigation challenging a provi-sion in the Right to EducationAct.Under section 16 of the Act,

no child shall be held back or

expelled till completion of ele-mentary school (Std VIII), re-ports PTI."A child who is not allowed to

progress to the next standardsuffers from an intense psycho-logical trauma resulting in lossof self-worth. Holding back forwant of adequate performanceassessed with conventionalmethods like examinationsplaces the child in a position ofdisadvantage in relation to hisor her peers," the court said. The division bench of Justices

D.Y. Chandrachud and S.C.Gupte was hearing a public in-terest litigation filed by ArunJoshi, director of a Solapur-based educational institute, stating that this provision hadresulted in deterioration of ed-ucational standards. The High Court, however, dis-

agreed."The kind of pressure we put

on our children these days... Atsuch a young age learningprocess need not be based onlyon exams. I was also a student

and now a parent...I know howexams can be," Justice Chan-drachud said. The court observed that

while enacting the RTE Act theParliament was aware of socialrealities. "Assessing knowledgemerely in terms of performancein examination takes a very nar-row view of the purpose of edu-cation. TREK IT OUTThe monsoon is the most beautiful season for trekking. So, if you love the outdoors, Priyanka Singh & Dev Goswami tell you about destinations that youshould not miss out on this season

If you are a trekking enthusiast and wantto witness the best waterfalls and densegreenery, then trekking during themonsoon will be like a dream for you!

During the monsoon, the natural habitatssurrounding us are in their utmost glory andyou’ll get to view them up, close andpersonal while hiking. We give you a list ofsome of the best monsoon trekkingdestinations closer to the city.

tUngareshwar

Tungareshwar is an excellent choice if you’relooking for heights that are closest to the city.Located between Virar and Vasai, it’s a hillwith a plateau on top and it is surrounded bydense forests and ample greenery. There isalso a Shiv temple and ashram on the hill, the latter of which has turned into more of apicnic spot lately. If you are not taking yourown vehicle, you can take a Virar local andthen take an auto from there to get toUssgaon where you’ll find the welcome gatefor Tungareshwar. This is the perfect time tovisit the place as the waterfalls will be at theirprime right now. There are also some small

restaurants on the way, so you have anoption of not carrying eatables with you. Thetrek is not very steep and so is suitable for beginners.

gorakhgad

Named after Saint Gorakhgad, Gorakhgad issituated at a height of 2,150 ft, which is not avery long trek and ideal for a one day trip. After the base of the summit, the trek gets alittle challenging, so if you are not used to

trekking, we’d suggest that you refrain fromvisiting this location. This mountain islocated at Dehri which is near Murbad andsome distance away from Kalyan. If you aretaking a train, then getting off at Kalyan willbe your best option. After some amount oftrekking, you’ll reach a cave with beautiful rock cut steps and further up you’llfind a small Shiva temple. Make sure you should carry your own food and water here.

ratangarh

If you are also a history enthusiast, thenRatangarh will delight you as on its extremetop, you’ll find Ratanwadi Fort which is 400years old. It is located 180km away fromPune and you’ll have to take a ferry over theArthur Lake to get to the base camp. A seriesof waterfalls and a thick jungle follows next. Finally, the entrance to the fort is so wellhidden that you need to enter through achimney. It will take three hours to reach tothis fort from the base and you will comeacross paddy fields, Pravara river and denseforests. Towards the end of the forests are

two ladders to cross the steep boulders. However, one needs to exercise utmostcaution on the ladders during the rains asthey can get slippery, but if it’s adventurethat you are after, then you’ll find that aplenty here.

harishchandragad

Harishchandragad is a hill fort situated inAhmednagar district of Maharashtra and itis 120km northeast of Pune. This is atreasure trove for people who have a keeninterest in history. However, during themonsoon, it is advised that onlyexperienced trekkers should take up thistrek, as reaching the fort can get quitedangerous and slippery. The highlights ofthis trek are the Kadareshwar cave andKonkan Kada. The former is a huge cavewhich has a big shiva linga that iscompletely surrounded by water. In themonsoon it is mostly not possible to reachthis spot as huge streams of water flowacross the way. The cave is quite a sight. The Konkan Kada gives a breathtakingview of the surrounding region. In themonsoon, availability of food and waterbecomes a problem, so carry your own.

thanale caves

Located in the Raigad district and a fewhours away from the city, Thanale Caves isa very popular trekking location. The rock-cut caves are actually Buddhist templesthat date back to 1st and 3rd century AD.There are 28 caves in all, however, natural circumstances have blockednearly 10 of them. All the treks forThanale caves start from the Thanalevillage, from where it will take youaround two hours to reach thecaves. The only drawback is thatthe place is popular and so, youmight find it a little crowded. However, the scenic beauty andancient architecture will surelymake up for it.

JaaMbul Maal

If you don’t think you can go out ofMumbai or just want a one-day break fromthe city, head over to the Sanjay GandhiNational Park (SNGP) where you can trekto Jaambul Maal, which is the highestpoint in the city. The point is located in the

Kanheri Caves region and wecan tell you from a first-hand

experience that this is one trek that everyMumbaikar must take up at least once intheir lifetime. The view from the highestpoint is truly breathtaking and you willwant to come back for more. Quiteobviously, SNGP is usually crowded duringthe weekend. However, very few peopleventure towards Jaambul Maal, so youdon’t need to worry about that.

kalsubai

Another popular destination, Kalsubai isthe highest peak in Maharashtra and islocated in the Sahyadri range. This trek isonly for those who are experienced intrekking as the rugged hilly terrain canprove to be quite a challenge; and the finalclimb to the Kalsubai pinnacle is a steepclimb. Once at the top, you will be treatedto a panoramic view of the surroundingsand the vast backwaters of Bhandardaraare sure to catch your attention.

safety precautions While trekking

While the monsoon is the perfect time to go trekking, due to the lush greenery and the

variety of flora and fauna; it can also be dangerous, especially if you’ve never trekked

before. If you’re new to trekking, always get someone who has trekked before to

accompany you. Also, Akul Tripathi, one of the founders of Jumpstart Outdoors, gives us

a few safety tips:

• Always inform your family/neighbours about your plans. Keep them updated.

• All treks/climbs have a variety of routes. Select one on the basis of the least capable

person in your group.

• Do background checks on the location before you leave the city. Talk to someone who

has been to the place before.

• Learn wilderness first aid skills and always carry a basic first aid kit.

• Carry enough drinking water and emergency food with you.

• Avoid carrying valuables when outdoors (jewellery /gadgets).

• Check your shoes for grip and durability before you leave and carry extra socks.

• Consuming alcohol dehydrates your body, makes it tougher to trek, reduces your

alertness, lowers your guard and makes you prone and vulnerable to accidents and/or

crimes against you. Make an informed decision.

• Keep change ready in your pocket and do not access your wallet all the time. Keep

some money stashed away safely in your bag for an emergency.

• Be consciously careful during the end of the trek as most accidents tend happen

during the wrap-up time.

Electronic Dance Music (EDM) beats play in the background,

then this time’s Visa on Arrival (VOA) will be like a dream come

true for you! Titled Clinically Tested, Canvas lounge is calling

this evening as the greatest musical check-up. At this gig,

nurses will attend to your every musical need with a hospital

themed EDM scene. Opening performance is going to be by DJ

Shiva, followed by DJ AJ (too many initials spoil it, don’t you

think?) The lounge will be transformed into a hospital with

medical cross shaped LCD screens, hostesses dressed as

nurses and DJs serving as your music doctors.

Vismay Chokshi, director of Crossbar Entertainment, says,

“Usually VOA is associated with the in-flight experience, but this

time we have chosen to move a step further and change the

aisle seats into hospital wheelchairs and beds. A hospital may

sound a bit scary, but when medicines are substituted by shots,

the nurses transform into naughty fantasies and you can dance

to your favourite EDM music with in-house fireworks... going to

a hospital will never be the same again.”

The Art Loft has been around for two years and

most people in Bandra already know and love

French brother-sister duo Leila and Kevin

Tayebaly. Started as a space for art therapy and

a range of other activities, it enables

participants to take a break from life to explore

their artistic side.

They’ve recently managed to procure a

decent amount of space on Bandra’s Waroda

Road, cut off from the noise outside by a large

wooden door and a tiled, closed space. On the

day we visited, work was still going on, but we

could see the long French windows and muted

walls of the ‘therapy room.’ It’s a big space,

complete with a gallery and exhibition area

where they plan to hold a lot more exhibitions

and workshops than before. We walked in (and

possibly disturbed!) an art therapy class held by

Leila, who very generously allowed us to take a

few pictures and explained that although they

have opened doors for their art therapy classes,

they are still working on putting finishing

touches to the entire space.

The art therapy includes painting with water

colours, which brings harmony between your

thoughts and actions. From the art therapy

class to distressing pottery workshops and a

Sounds of Sufi workshop for music lovers, this

artsy space has something for everyone.

We can’t say much about its décor because it

was still under construction when we visited,

but if the finished product (which, hopefully, will

be soon) is as nice as the concept, we’re not

going to be complaining. But, we really look

forward to going back when they’ve finally

launched their café.

« STORE REVIEW: ARMANI & ART LOFT

A CREATIVE NICHE « NEW LAUNCHES: FIND OUT WHAT’S JUST OUT

A1,957 square foot store withdesigner clothes andaccessories for men and women — Armani does a

good job with first impressions. As itshould, being one of the many spin-offs of the successful Giorgio Armanibrand. We’ve always loved theluxurious Emporio Armani collectionsand the high-end Armani Collezioni, but unless you’re flushed with cash, they’re not the most affordableoptions. So, they decided to bring thebridge-line, denim heavy Armani Jeansinto the mix to test the waters. It’s stillheavy on the pocket for most, but it’stargeted (correctly) at the young andflashy crowd for whom paying `9,000for a belt is no big deal. Armani Jeans is like the rainbow

sister compared to the rest of theArmani labels. I’m used to going gagaover their dapper suits, crisp whitesand subtle beiges, but I’m not used toseeing reds and blues pop out at me

under the designer tags. It was apleasant change and made the storeseem a little less intimidating. On display as I entered the store, was

a pretty peach floral bag staggeringlypriced at `15,500, along with itssomber black twin for `15,000.Remembering that it’s a luxury brandwill help ease you into the prices, especially since it’s cheaper than ausual Armani store. Still, `9,000 for apair of pink rain shoes seems a bitoverpriced to me. While the purses andshoes were too run-off-the-mill to havesuch tags, the clothes were a little lessoffensive. Especially since the designswere designer-worthy and the materialwas luxurious to touch. I was remindedthat the collection changed often, so ifyou like something and think you’llbuy it in a few days, you may not getthe chance to. They seem to encourageimpulsive spending, not a bad ploy fora designer store. A blue, striped blousestood out the most (`13,000), if only for

the material. The jeans also looked likethey were made of great material(`11,500) and seemed like a good buy. However, on closer inspection I was alittle perturbed by the loose stitchingnear the waist band. If I’m paying overten grand for jeans, I expect nothingless than perfection. The men’s collection impressed me

with its splashes of colour. A redchecked shirt for `11,500, shoes for`19,500 and slim jeans for `11,000 — Iloved each piece but the materialwasn’t as impressive as that of the

women’s collection. One thing thatmade Armani Jeans stand out fromother designer stores was the lack ofstaff snootiness. They didn’t treataffluent looking customers better thanthe jeans and t-shirt wearing crowd. They know prices and information at aglance, are helpful and willing to assist, whether they think you can buy whatyou’re trying on or not.

Afternoon Despatch & Courier MUMBAI | FRIDAY, JULY 12, 2013

There’s pretty much nothing that can

make me smile when I just wake up.

But, seeing that elephant along with

the sentence ‘Made with tender

loving care, our teas taste best when

shared’ made my day. Perhaps even

week. But, that wasn’t the best part

— I opened the tins and was engulfed

by an invigorating lemon scent, gentle

vanilla aroma and a potent whiff of

ginger. And that’s what Tea

Sommelier Snigdha Manchanda, the

founder of Tea Trunk, wants — a

happy tea totaller.

Snigdha has always been

consumed by her love for tea. Having

grown up collecting tea from all over

the world, including Russia, Taiwan

and Kenya; Snigdha stored more than

100 exotic and rare teas in her

father’s old trunk for over a decade

which later became the inspiration for

the name of her tea company in

2011. She is a trained Tea Taster and

a certified Tea Sommelier in 2011

from the Tea Sommelier Academy in

Sri Lanka. So, it’s safe to say that this

girl knows what she’s talking about

when it comes to tea.

Having realised the potential of the

tea market, she created six

handblended signature teas (Rose

Oolong, Vanilla, Ginger, Lemon, Moon

White and East Himalayan Black Tea),

available on her new online tea store.

The website is fun (that elephant is

so goddamn cute!), easy to navigate

and ordering is simple.

We tried the vanilla (read the

brewing instructions on the tin),

lemon and ginger tea. The vanilla

(`800 for 15 teabags), which we had

with a dash of sugar, is a unique

blend of two tea varieties from the

north and south of India: the robust

Assam and the fragrant Nilgiri.

Combined with real vanilla beans, the

vanilla tastes so good that you almost

feel guilty drinking this dessert tea.

The lemon tea (`650 for a tin of 15)

is a great pick-me-up and ideal to

beat a mid-day slump. The ginger root

(`650 for a tin of 15), which shows

the adorable elephant all wrapped in

a scarf on the tin, claims to sort out

everything from a blocked nose to a

broken heart. A warming cup of this is

like a hug from the inside. Another

thing we like about the tea is that

they recommend what you can eat

with it. Tea Trunk knows us well.

Frankly, these teas are a little

expensive to make it a daily affair but

the cute tin makes it an ideal gift or a

treat for yourself. The flavours are

subtle and worth trying out. And yes, I

know Tea Trunk recommends sharing.

But, I’m not going to. Get your

own tin!

We bring youupdates on newplaces that haverecently opened upin the city

Newly opened House of Asia at TheMirador Hotel offers a mix of Indianand Pan-Asian food. Here is a placewhere you can dig into Kashmiri,

Awadhi or even Hyderabadi food alongsideThai, Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese andJapanese food. So, here’s the deal. House of Asiaoffers a lunch and dinner buffet alongside theireclectic à la carte menu. The buffet lunch ispriced at `450 plus taxes while the dinner buffetis `550 plus taxes. We sampled a little of both tobring you a list of must try and avoidable dishes. We started our meal with the Chicken Shorba

soup and Lemon Coriander soup from thebuffet spread. Refreshing and spicy, both were agood start to our meal. Next was the KashmiriChaat ( `200) which was sweet but tasty; thisone’s only for those who really like chaat. Nextin line were dishes from the Live Teppanyakicounter at the buffet. House of Asia offers quitea few dishes in their buffet (Indian and Pan-Asian), but their live counters (buffet),especially the Teppanyaki one, is the one to lookout for. Both the chicken and vegetable variantsserved here were nothing short of delicious! Wealso sampled the Dim sum (buffet). The non-vegetarian dim sum were very good, but sadlythe vegetarian one was nothing to write home about. Next from the à la carte menu was the Rajma

Galaouti Kebab ( `300) with the Ulta tawa

paratha and green chutney. Eaten together, thetrio is a superb combination of textures andflavours. For the mains we sampled the MurghMakhani (`350) and the Thai Green Curry withChicken (`400). The former was tasty, not thebest we’ve had, but pretty good. Now for sweeter matters — the dessert! We

highly recommend the Tab Tim Grob (`250)available on their à la carte menu. This Thaidessert, created with water chestnuts, sugarsyrup and coconut milk, was absolutelyrefreshing, unusual and a nice change from theusual western and Indian sweets mostrestaurants offer. A must try when you visit.House of Asia also offers a range of their in-house homemade gelato ice-creams (buffet). So to conclude, yes, House of Asia is worth a

visit if you’re in the vicinity or willing to travelfor a good meal, just make sure you order theright dishes. The rates (impressive for a four starhotel) are reasonable and in tandem with thespread offered. The staff is warm and friendly, but service took a while to pick up, with a fewglitches here and there. The decor isn’t a highpoint but bright and happy for a corporate orfamily meal. All in all, it was a good andsatisfying experience.

Sorabh Pant &his city musings

Five things you love about Mumbai?

Four people who come for my show. And, one glass of

Nasik wine.

Five things you’d change about the city?

Nothing. All the negatives of our great city are

positive. Flooding turns us into Europe — S.V. Road

becomes South Venice road. Potholes finance the

axle repairman’s livelihood — he can send his kids to

Harvard with the money he makes. Traffic gives us

moments of stillness — to direct our inner Buddha.

Illegal immigrants remind us that you can buy Chetan

Bhagat’s new novel for cheaper at traffic signals.

Pollution makes our lungs stronger, so strong that we

could survive underwater when the tsunami comes.

One person you’d like to import into the city and why?

Any Bangladeshi. I’m a North Indian so I need the ire

against my people directed toward someone else.

One person you’d like to export. Why and where?

The man/woman who started Micromax phones. To

China. It'll be ironic for him/her to meet the place

his/her phones originate from.

Funniest Mumbai moment.

I once stopped a man from committing suicide at

Worli Sea Face. When things got out of control, I

called the cops. Most of them were super but, one

kept insisting that the man trying to commit suicide

was my gay partner. I was like, even if I were gay I

don't think I'd be so bad at being gay that I'd drive my

partner to kill himself!

Religare calls a ‘Buy’ on IndusInd BankCMP: Rs. 511 Target Rs. 575IIB’s Q1FY13 results were in line with our/street estimates at the NII level(up 40% YoY to Rs 6.8bn), while PAT came in higher (up 38% YoY to Rs 3.3bn)driven by trading profits. NIMs remained stable as lower cost of funds(despite high deposit costs) offset the pressure on lending yields. Assetquality was stable (even as GNPLs in the CV portfolio rose marginally) and theprovision coverage increased QoQ due to floating provisions of Rs 500mn. SAtraction continued in Q1 with 12% growth QoQ. We maintain BUY and rollover to Sep’14 PT of Rs 575/sh (from Rs 525/sh earlier).Other income growth strong; asset quality healthy: Total non-interest

income grew by 48% YoY to Rs 4.7bn driven by trading profits of Rs 1.05bn;however, core fee income growth moderated to 31% YoY. GNPLs increased by3bps QoQ to 1.06% due to higher GNPLs in the CV segment (up 16bps QoQto 1.17%; Fig 8); however, NNPLs declined QoQ as floating provisions of ~Rs500mn were adjusted against NPLs. IIB intends to utilise trading profits toincrease its provision coverage further.Strong earnings growth to support premium valuations: We expect a 27%

EPS CAGR over FY13-FY15 driven by strong advances growth and stableasset quality. In our view, the bank’s premium valuations (3x/18.7x FY14BV/EPS) would sustain given strong earnings visibility and robust assetquality.

ICICI Direct calls a ‘Buy’ on Jubilant Life SciencesCMP: Rs. 122 Target Rs. 162Jubilant is one of the few stocks in the pharma space, which is negatively impacted by rupee depreciationdue to huge foreign currency denominated loans. Ason March 31, 2013, it has debt of around Rs 3788crore, which includes foreign debt of US$426 millionand rupee debt swapped into US$ to the tune ofUS$202million. According to the management, everyone rupee depreciation vis-à-vis the US$ will benefitthe company to the tune of ~Rs 12-15 crore at the

EBITDA level. However, it needs to book MTM loss of Rs 40-45 crore on forexdebt. We are cutting our target price to Rs 162 from Rs 234 on the back of two

reasons 1) unfavourable rupee and 2) China imposing anti dumping duty onPyridine. From our last recommendation, the INR has depreciated around10% vis-à-vis the US$ and the stock has declined 26%. We now value thestock at 3.8x FY15E EV/EBITDA, i.e. ~70% discount to Divi’s.What if rupee stays at current level? If the rupee stays at the current level

of Rs 61 per dollar, the debt will get inflated by around Rs 300 crore from thelevels of March 2013.

BUSINESS BRIEFSInflation Risk ResurfacesPower, Pharma, Banks & Textiles To Lead Q1 EarningsMomentumDuring the June quarter, “we expect Power, Pharma Banks and Textilessectors to show profit growths of 29%, 11%, 7% and 96% YoY respectively”forecast Karvy Stock Broking. According to it ; Capacity additions, increased tariffs, lower base of last year should drive the Power sector’sgrowth. New product launches, market share ramp-up and Rupeedepreciation should drive the Pharma sector’s PAT growth. Banks’ profitgrowth is driven by private sector banks’ profitability growth. Earningsgrowth in Textiles sector is skewed.Cyclicals including Infrastructure, Cement, Capital Goods and

Automobiles would report a YoY earnings decline owing to slowereconomic growth, policy paralysis, high interest rate and higher input cost.Key sectors showing QoQ uptrend are Oil & Gas (+6%) and Real Estate(+5%). Key sectors with QoQ earnings downtrend are Auto (-34%), CapitalGoods (-74%), Infrastructure (-20%), Pharmaceuticals (-7%), Power (-32%)and Textiles (-9%).

By A Business Reporter

After falling for three consecu-tive months WPI inflation isnow facing upside risks. “Our

analysis shows that if the rupee aver-ages Rs 58 per US$ in 2013-14, aver-age WPI inflation in 2013-14 couldrise to 6.0 % compared to our base-line call of 5.3 %. This leaves littleroom for monetary easing despitethe sharp slowdown in GDP growth”says Crisil Research.

The fall of the rupee by nearly 12 %since the beginning of May, 2013 hasraised the rupee price of crude oiland will get reflected in higher infla-tion of internationally-linked fuelssuch as petrol. The rupee’s weaknesshas also increased under-recoveriesin diesel to Rs 10 per litre (as of July

8th) from only Rs 2.50 per litre inApril. If the rupee remains at currentlevels, the monthly diesel price hikewill have to continue throughout2013-14.

In addition, keeping in mind thefiscal consolidation agenda, the pres-sure to hike prices of other adminis-tered fuels such as LPG will also rise.Input costs, particularly those of im-ported raw materials, have risen sig-nificantly. As firms pass-through atleast some of these cost increases toconsumers, core inflation - meas-ured by CRISIL Core Inflation Indica-tor – will begin to rise again. Therefore, unless the rupee appreci-ates swiftly from its current levels, the lowest point inWPI inflation maynow be behind us.

This article analyses the evolving

inflation dynamics in India by sepa-rating the noise, signal, and adminis-trative price components ofinflation. Wholesale price-based in-flation (WPI) fell sharply within ashort span of three months – to 4.7 %in May from 7.3 % in February. Therecent sharp depreciation of therupee has, however, once againraised concerns over the future tra-jectory of inflation. Will inflation goup again sharply? Is the lowest pointof inflation behind us now? Will de-mand-side pressures on inflation riseagain? In insight, Crisil assess the in-flation trajectory in coming monthsby separating inflation into two com-ponents: noise and signal. ‘Noise’ ininflation comprises those prices thattend to be highly volatile and whoseimpact on inflation is usually transi-tory. ‘Signal’ reflects the demand-side pressure on prices and providesan indication of the likely inflationpath ahead.

Noise could arise due to two fac-tors – first, the impact of temporaryfactors that are hard to predict suchas supply disruptions on prices offood articles, volatility in currencyand movements in internationalcrude and commodity prices. Sec-ond, changes in administered pricesthat are set by the government suchas prices of certain food grains andfuels; such as diesel, coal, keroseneetc. As price increases in these arti-cles are regulated by the government, they do not reflect demand and sup-ply forces in the economy. Like othernoise elements, administered priceincreases are not indicative of theunderlying pressures on prices.

Expressing shock and disappoint-ment, telecom major Bharti Airtel

has said it will approach courtagainst a Rs 650 crore penalty noticeimposed by the Department of Tele-com for alleged violation of roamingnorms.

“Bharti Airtel is shocked and dis-appointed to receive a demand no-tice of Rs. 650 crore from the DoTpertaining to the service of Sub-scriber Local Dialling to its sub-scribers between 2002 and 2005,” thecompany said in a statement.

DoT had found that Airtel had

routed national and internationalcalls to its roaming subscribers aslocal calls, even after being told tostop the service in 2003, causinglosses to the government exchequerand state-run Bharat Sanchar NigamLtd in 13 service areas.

Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal ap-proved the penalty amount proposedby DoT on the company at the rate ofRs 50 crore per service area. Airtelsaid the Rs 650 crore penalty is de-void of any merit and has no justifi-cation both on facts and in law.

“We are disappointed that DoT,which has the bounden duty to actrationally, has thought it fit to issue

such a baseless penalty order, leavingus with no choice but to litigate,” thecompany said. The total revenuegenerated by the SLD service was afew lakh rupees and the DoT wasaware of this fact, Airtel said. The reg-ulator had found this service to becustomer friendly and in complianceof the licence conditions, the com-pany said.

“Yet strangely, without as much asgiving us a proper hearing, the DoThas after eight years issued a demandnotice of Rs 650 crore in completedisregard of the natural process ofjustice,” the company said.

Rising price of raw materials andhigh taxation have emerged as

biggest threats to corporates in theAsia Pacific region, says a survey.According to Lloyd’s Risk Index 2013,Asia Pacific executives termed cur-rency fluctuation, inflation, loss ofcustomers/cancelled orders as thenext three top risks facing their or-ganisations.

When the study was last con-ducted in 2011, price of material in-puts ranked 12th on executives’ list ofrisk concerns, the index noted.Talentand skills shortage was the prime

concern for corporate houses in2011. “The price of raw materials isseen as the top risk, reflecting the im-portance of manufacturing to the re-gion, and the rising cost of materialsacross a range of sectors. It hassoared up the risk index ranking from12th to 1st place in the last twoyears,” the survey noted.

The risk index surveyed 558 exec-utives across the world during Apriland May. Respondents were ques-tioned about 50 risks across five cat-egories— business, strategic andeconomic; regulatory and market;political, crime and security; envi-ronmental and health and natural

hazards. “With costs of many rawmaterials rising, businesses in theAsia Pacific region are understand-ably concerned about managing thisexpenditure.Yet the danger is that anemphasis on near-term, operationalissues comes at the expense of sig-nificant, strategic decisions that havepreviously exercised business lead-ers,” Lloyd’s CEO RichardWard said.

“With the timetable for global eco-nomic recovery likely to be muchlonger than we hoped, a focus onlong-term sustainability and effec-tive risk management should be apriority for boards across the world,”he added.

Infosys Results TodayBy A Business Reporter

Today will be Infosy’s first resultannouncement after N R

Narayana Murthy returned to thehelm of affairs as its executivechairman. Already the company’sshares have risen over 4 % sincehis return in June. However, whatis announced today will majorlyinfluence the company’s stockprice and the sector pricing as awhole going forward.

But analysts do not expect anyfireworks. The company had al-ready forecast its revenues to growin the range of 6-10% for 2013-14

much below the industry estimateof 12-14%. So the first quarter re-sults would be similarly in line.

Says Rumit Dugar, Indian ITandTelecoms Analyst, Religare In-stitutional Research “We expectInfosys to deliver a muted sequen-tial US$ revenue growth and ex-pect margins to remain flat. Thefocus will firmly remain on theirFY14 outlook which currentlystands at 6%-10% US$ revenuegrowth. While demand environ-ment remains mixed and couldprompt some tightening of theband, we don’t expect cut to thelower end of the guidance range.”

From his first movieKalicharan in 1976, Sub-hash Ghai has believed in

his instincts to make the deci-sions that saw his debut filmbecome a blockbuster. Overtime, the instincts were gradu-ally replaced by a strong confi-dence in mastered skills thatcontinued to drive him towardsacclaim. Karma, Kalicharan,Ram Lakhan, Saudagar,Pardes, Vidhata, Karz and Taalare some of his subsequentfilms which have made itthrough the annals of Bolly-wood.

The master filmmaker is nowcoming out with his new direc-torial film – Kaanchi which isreleasing in August this year.Ghai, who is known for launch-ing new faces and big dramas,

is back in his element.Kaanchi, a musical thriller witha love backdrop has a new starcast with veteran actor RishiKapoor playing the villain in thefilm and Mithun also playing animportant role.

We dug up information onGhai’s new film Kaanchi andfound out that it is the story ofa 17-year old girl’s journey fromthe mountains to the city. Ghaiadmits, “Yes, it is the story of ayoung, innocent girl’s journeyfrom the mountains to the city. She’s a girl on a mission.” Ghaiis thrilled about returning to di-rection after 4 years. “I di-

rected Black and White and Yu-vraaj in 2008 but then gotbusy with my film schoolWhistling Woods. Now, I am di-recting again.”

As a filmmaker, Ghai intro-duced tons of fresh talent andgroomed each of them, mak-ing their journey to stardomeasier. No wonder he is alsoknown as a godfather andgreat teacher to many in Bolly-wood. This is probably whyGhai set up Whistling Woodsin 2006, an international qual-ity film and television traininginstitute. Sharing his thoughtsGhai insists that, “We must

share our knowledge and ex-perience with the younger gen-eration of film makers andkeep learning from contempo-rary cinema to keep pace withtime and values “.

The grandeur of Ghai’s en-deavor and the delight hetook in extravagant story-telling, earned him the sobri-quet ‘Showman.’ His last fewfilms like Yuvraaj, Trimurti,Yaadein, and Black and Whitemay have not done well, but itwould be foolish to write himoff, because there are a lot ofwould-be performers outthere who need their sparkle

to be chiselledout. And Bolly-wood has very fewshowmen whothrive on doingjust that.

SUBHASH GHAITHE SHOWMAN AND GODFATHER:

Did the ‘Aila Re’ song helpyour career?Yes. It got noticed by the big-wigs in theHindi film industryand makers down South too,who offered me songs androles and basically kept mevery busy in the region.

Tell us something aboutGrand Masti.Grand Masti is a hilariouscomic entertainer directed byIndra Kumar and stars AftabShivdasani, RiteishDeshmukhandViveikOberoi. I playViveikOberoi’s girlfriend and it’squite a substantial role. Wehad fun on the sets with theensemble cast which also hasBruna Abdullah andMariyamZakaria.

How is Indra Kumar as a di-rector?Since he is an actor himself he

could explain the scenes inperfect detail andhehas a fan-tastic sense of humor. It was aprivilege to work with him.

And Viveik Oberoi? He is a very co-operative actorand fun to have around. Dur-ing the first day of the shoot Islipped and fell and Viveiktook great care ofme.

Any forthcoming projects?I am in talks with a few pro-ducers and my projects willbe announced soon. Mean-while I am doing stage showsand some work down Southas well as a few commercials.I have an item song comingup as well, sung by MamtaSharma. This makes it quite clear thatKainaat Arora has that X-fac-tor needed to make it big inHIFI(Hindi Film Industry)!

Kainaat’s sizzling actKainaat Arora, who grabbed eyeballs with her sultrydance ‘Aila Re’ with Akshay Kumar in Khatta Meethaand later with her dances down South with leadingstars like Ajit Kumar, is now waiting for directorIndra Kumar’s sequel to his earlier comic hit Mastinow titled Grand Masti. ADC’s Sandeep Hattangadispoke to the vivacious Kainaat about her career.

Akshay Kumar and Kainaat Arora in Khatta MeethaLet’s start with your jour-ney..I started singing at the age of 2and a half and although I be-long to a Marwari family, mymum did everything she couldto train me. I have studied clas-sical music under PanditSatyanarayan Mishra and havealso learnt playback singingand voice culture. My journeyhas been very exciting so farwith me having sung over 78songs.

You have done a lot of So-cial Work with ‘Dil se Diltak’ from a very young age?Yes, my brother and I do showsfor heart patients and till nowwe have donated Rs. 2.88crores for 587 operations. There are 623 more kids in mywaiting list and I am trying mybest to help them out. I startedthis mission 13 years ago butnever thought that it would goso far.

How was your start inKalyanji - Anandji’s group?I was already a part of Anandjiuncle’s Little Stars group fromthe age of four. I travelledacross the world with him andgot to learn a lot.

How did Bollywood respondto your first major assign-ments in Damadamm andEk Tha Tiger?Himesh sir made me sing titletrack of Damadamm. I got ‘La-pataa’ from Ek Tha Tiger onlybecause of Salman sir. Oneday he told me that I wouldsoon be singing for Yashrajfilms. A month later, I got a callfrom Sohail Sen. I was so ex-cited when I came to know thesong was for Ek Tha Tiger.

Your song from Aashiqui 2became a rage. How didyou feel?I was excited when I was calledto sing for Aashiqui 2. There

was a big responsibility onthe music team, becausethe music of Aashiqui 1was a super hit and wehad to match those standards.I was aware that this projectwould be something big, butnever knew that it would cre-ate history. I am thankful toeveryone involved.

Howmany languages doyou sing in?I sing in 17 languages. Actuallywherever I perform I sing inthe local language. Likewhen I went to Malaysia Isang in Malay, Arabic inDubai, Kiswahili in Kenya,English in London, Tamil inChennai and so on.

The ‘chulbuli’ Dabanggdamsel, Sonakshi Sinha,

has been unanimously show-ered with lavish praises forher ‘extraordinary’ perform-ance in Lootera as the period‘Bong’ babe Pakkhi who suf-fers from a critical respira-tory ailment. The icing on

the cakeof complimentscame in the form of herlegendary actor dad,Shatrughan Sinha’sspontaneous reactionwhen he watched themovie. The other-wise hard-to-pleaseShatrughanwasap-

parently emotionally stunnedand moved to tears whilewatching his daughter on-screen, coughing spasmodi-cally andeven facing rejectionin love.

Enthuses the outspokensenior Sinha, “Whatevermaybe the box-office reportsof Lootera, it’s an awesomeperformance by Sonakshiand she touched my heartand soul with her convincing, sensitive portrayal ofPaakhi. She has made mywife andme feel that sense ofparental pride”, insists Sha-trughan who seemed so dis-turbed during the screeningthat he discreetly called up

his daughter to checkwhether she was perfectlyokay.

Meanwhile, Sonakshi hastaken all the accolades verymodestly. “Actually my dad’semotional reaction is itself acoveted award for me. Ini-tially people were skeptical ifI should be acting in a periodfilm as an ethnic demurely-clad character. But on an in-stinctive impulse, I took it upas a challenging experiment.Allow me to share the creditwith my entire cast and crewespecially Lootera directorVikramaditya-ji who broughtout the best of my histrionicpotential,” smiles Sonakshi.

IN spite of living in a filmobsessed country, onenever ceases to be amazed

at just how much interestthere is in the lives of stars. For quite a few weeks, eventhe upper crust hangoutsof Mumbai were en-tran-ced by the soapopera createdaround ShahRukh Khan’sbaby. Apart

from what the media wasalready covering — thesex determination angle, and the BMC’s over eager-ness to ‘question’ the star—therewere some scandalousstories going around thatwould make the ears burn. Ifyou said you were not in theleast curious about theparentage of the baby, youwere supposed to be weirdand not human. How cananyone in India not be inter-ested in the ‘inside’ story? Then Shah Rukh Khan

sends out an official press re-

lease that says, “Amidst all thenoise that has been goingaround, the sweetest is theone made by our new-bornbaby, AbRam. He was bornprematurely by severalmonths but has finally

come home. Gauriand our wholefamily have beendealing with hishealth issues fora long timenow. As a fam-ily, our silenceon this sub-ject has beenbecause ofthe personalnature ofemo t i o n a lstrife that wehave beeng o i n g

through due tohis health…” andgoes on to endwith, “It seemsunfortunate that I

have to explain/clar-ify so many aspectsfor our new-bornbaby. Wish it werejust a simplemessageof happiness on be-half of the family. They say a baby isGod’s opinion that theworld should go on.Post this statement, Ihope we all move on

too.”And all of a sudden

the media retracts itsclaws and the whole

country (or at least the sec-

tion that was following thedrama) is going “cho chweetbaby AbRam” and marvelingover the great selection ofname and the spelling. All of which raises the ques-

tion of a film star’s right to pri-vacy. There is a point of viewthat says a public figure is an-swerable to society, which isthe price to pay for fame, andanother that believes there islimit to howmuch prying thatcan be done into thelives of stars. Thenagain, the stars whowant to be leftalone, find ways ofguarding theirprivacy andthere are thosewho just pretendto be bothered bythe constantscrutiny, but surrep-titiously feed it. As forconsumers of this peep-hole journalism, it is ofcourse a safe form ofvoyeurism. They get their gos-sip fix, without experiencingany of the discomfort or em-barrassment the celebrity tar-get would go through, especially if he/she has notasked for it. As for the rest, ifyou don’t care to know, turnthe page or change thechannel.Frankly, if Shah Rukh

Khan had ignored all thespeculation and glared downany impertinent questions, that would have been fine too.The world would have movedon in any case.

early in his career there havebeen moments when star-dom got to him, but theactor credits his family forkeeping him grounded.Ranveer started his acting

career with 2010 hit BandBaaja Baaraat and thenwenton todoLadies vs RickyBahl. The 28-year-old actor’s

recent release Lootera hasalso been appreciated. The actor’s father scolds

him whenever he tends toact “bratty”. “I have a veryclose knit nuclear familywhoare very frank andbluntwith me, especially my fa-ther. I will admit, there havebeenoccasionswheremy fa-ther has scolded me saying,‘What are you doing? Why are youbehaving like

“And then I have these twobest buddies since the ageof13-14.They are just what real

friends do, keep criticisingmywork andnever letme flyhigh. Theymakeme feel likejust another guy. When youhave such close people youcan never lose your mind,”Ranveer told PTI in an in-terview.

“What I hope formyself in terms of thecareer I want andthe sort of contri-butions I want tomake to thefilms, stardomdoesn’t reallymatter then. Iknow where Ihave to reachso I am notlooking at what

number 11 inTests andHughesmade an un-beaten 81.England fast bowler James Anderson ear-

lier produced an inspired display of swingbowling as Australia, after resuming on 75for four, lost five wickets for nine runs andthe hosts looked poised to lead by around ahundred on first innings.

Steve Smith became the

first player to pass fifty in thematch and hadmoved on to 53 when he tried to drive An-derson through extra cover and nicked acatch to wicketkeeper Matt Prior, sparking aflurry of wickets.Graeme Swann produced a ripping off-

break to bowl Brad Haddin for one, PeterSiddle edged Anderson through to Prior andMitchell Starc went the same way for a duck.James Pattinson was trapped lbw by

Swann for two and Australia were reeling. But Agar showed great composure in only

his 11th first-class match, driving Swannover long-off for six and pulling Steven Finnfor two fours as the last-wicket pair broughtup their fifty partnership off only 60 balls.Agar reached his half century with a two

off Anderson, getting to the landmark off ex-actly 50 balls including one six and sevenfours. He dispatched Swann for another six over

long-on and Hughes joined the party afterpassing his fifty, smashing Stuart Broad forthree fours in an over.England took the extra half hour before

lunch but they could not capture the final

wicket, Agar and Hughes bringing up theircentury partnership shortly before the inter-val.The pair continued to flay the England at-

tack in the afternoon and Agar, havingpassed the previous highest score by a num-ber 11 in a Test of 95, looked poised to reachhis century. But he heaved Broad into the leg-side and

was caught by Swann on the mid-wicketboundary before leaving the field to a stand-ing ovation.England openers Alastair Cook and Joe

Root played cautiously in the face of tightAustralian bowling and Root, on five, wasunlucky to flick Starc through to wicket-keeper Brad Haddin down the leg-side.Jonathan Trott was then trapped lbw by

Starc’s next delivery, sent back to the pavil-ion following an umpire referral after beinginitially given not out.

Agar tipped forAshes success

NOTTINGHAM: Australia coach DarrenLehmann forecast "outstanding" teenagesensation Ashton Agar would come intothe game "more and more" after the left-arm spinner was handed a shock Testdebut in the Ashes opener at Trent Bridge.Agar, a 19-year-old Western Australia

left-arm spinner, was only brought toEngland originally as a "developmentplayer" for the first two Ashes Tests. But ina dramatic move involving Australiachairman of selectors John Inverarity, ontour selector and wicketkeeping greatRodney Marsh and Lehmann himself, Agarwas preferred Wednesday instead of off-spinner Nathan Lyon, a veteran of 22Tests.The stunning selection did not leak

from the tourists' camp until fast bowlinggreat Glenn McGrath was seen handingAgar his 'Baggy Green' cap, in a traditionalpresentation ceremony for Australiaplayers making a Test debut, shortlybefore Wednesday's toss."The boys were good, they knew two

days ago so we just had to see if theycould keep it quiet and they did,"Lehmann, appointed only just over afortnight before this match after SouthAfrican Mickey Arthur was sacked asAustralia coach, said."For a 19-year-old kid, it's great," added

Lehmann, a former Australia batsman."He's excited and you saw him when

Glenn McGrath presented him with hiscap, he had a tear in his eye and it's a bigmoment for him." Just as England believeoff-spinner Graeme Swann can play a keyrole against Australia because his stockball turns away from left-handed batsmen,of whom there are several in the tourists'line-up, so the fact England's top-order ismainly made up of right-handers helpedboost Agar's case.

Virat is an aggressive captain in Ganguly mould: Coach SharmaNEW DELHI: Noted coach Rajkumar

Sharma, who played a pivotal role inshaping up Virat Kohli's career, feels that hisward's aggressive captaincy resembles a lotwith Sourav Ganguly's methods but insistedthat he should also learn the ropes from cur-rent skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni."Virat is an aggressive player by nature. He

is someone who always likes to attack andtake the opposition head on which is also re-flected in his captaincy. For me, Virat belongsto the Sourav Ganguly 'School of captaincy'which is to attack the opposition from theword 'go'," Sharma told PTI during an inter-action.Just like any concerned coach, Sharma is

also aware that aggression should be blendedwith caution which is the hallmark of a goodcaptain. "I am all for aggressive captaincy but I be-

lieve that he should also know the line thatone shouldn't overstep. If he does that, then Icome into picture to make him aware,"Sharma analysed.Kohli, in his maiden stint as India captain

has led the team to the final of the Tri-Series

in West Indies but his coach doesn't want hisward to be pushed into the hot seat."Mahendra Singh Dhoni is an exceptional

captain and I believe that Virat still has a lotto learn from Dhoni although no two personsare the same and their thought process isbound to be different. I feel that till Dhoni isplaying, he is the best man to lead India andVirat will certainly get it when his turn comesaround," Sharma opined. However the former first-class cricketer

doesn't believe that age should be a criteriawhile selecting a captain."Age has got nothing do with captaincy. It's

more about how good one is when it comesto analysing match situation, reacting to itand also about leading from the front withgood performances."The coach also believes Virat has come of

age in the past couple of years and is moreconfident about his game."He had some problems but that was way

back in 2008 during IPL-I. After that, he un-derstood his mistakes and also worked hardon his game. He has matured a lot and that'sfor everyone to see," Sharma concluded.

PORT OF SPAIN: India benefited im-mensely after Sri Lanka’s middle andlower-order batsmen committed hara-

kiri, which saw the team lose eight wickets forjust 30 runs before being bundled out for 201in the final of the Tri-nation ODI series heretoday.Sent into bat, Sri Lanka were sitting pretty

at 171 for two in the 38th over, but lack of ap-plication on part of their batsmen saw thembeing packed off with seven balls left in theirinnings.Ravindra Jadeja was the most successful In-

dian bowlers returning figures of 4/24 whilethere were two wickets apiece for Bhuvnesh-war Kumar, Ishant Sharma and RavichandranAshwin.Earlier, the in-from Bhuvneshwar made use

of seaming conditions to send back UpulTharanga and Mahela Jayawardene. Inciden-tally, the duo had punished India with a dou-ble-century partnership in the match thatBhuvneshwar was dropped.Sri Lanka then rode on Kumar Sangakkara

(71) and Lahiru Thirimanne’s 122-run part-

nership for the third wicket to stage a fight-back before their innings disintegratedlargely due to some mindless batting. Thirimanne scored 46 off 72 balls while

Sangakkara got his runs in 100 deliveries. From a comfortable position with about 12

overs to go, Sri Lanka were left licking theirwounds at 193 for seven in the 46th overwhen skipper Angelo Mathews got out. Noneof the last six batsmen could reach double fig-ures.Sri Lanka made a cautious start on a pitch

that was not conducive for stroke-play. Butafter reaching 27 in the seventh over, the is-landers suffered their first blow when Bhu-vneshwar changed his angle to induce aninside edge from Upul Tharanga. Dhoni didthe rest behind the stumps. The ever-consistent Bhuvneshwar was at it

again, in the 14th over, as he removedJayawardene with an innocuous delivery thatmoved a bit on landing at the Queen’s ParkOval.Losing the experienced Jayawardene so

early into the innings was a big blow for the

Lankans and they desperately needed solid-ity at that point of time. Sri Lanka found theanswer to their worries in the form of anotherveteran, Sangakkara, who anchored the in-nings.Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 201 all out in 48.5 overs(Kumar Sangakkara 71, Lahiru Thirimanne 46;Ravindra Jadeja 4/23, Bhuvneshwar Kumar 2/24)
