1. PANCHANG

Adarsh Mobile Applications provides panchangs (Hindu calendars) for mobile phones. Adarsh Panchang is based on Drik Ganita and use precise moment for planetary events. One should not match panchangs based on Drik Ganita with those based on Surya-Siddhanta. Panchangs based on Drik Ganita, e.g. Adarsh Panchang, are more accurate and provide precise timings for eclipse, sunrise, sunset and other planetary events. 2. 1000 YEARS SUPPORT

Adarsh Panchang generates panchangs from period 1583 C.E to 2582 C.E. (for 1000 years) for hundreds of cities across the globe. Adarsh Panchang is result of years’ research on Hindu calendar. It considers skipped months, leap months, skipped days, leap days and follows them as dictated by ancient Hindu scriptures. We use most out of advance computing and high precision mathematics available on handheld devices to generate precise panchangs. Even in this computer era finding panchang which is made for a particular city is difficult. Not only Hindu dates but also Hindu festivals are not always same across two locations. Hence all festivals should be calculated separately for each location. Adarsh Panchang lists most Hindu festivals for 1000 years. All Hindu festivals are calculated based on user’s current location. Hence panchang recalculates all festivals if user location is changed. Adarsh Panchang also generates solar and lunar eclipse data for 1000 years. 3. TRIAL PERIOD

One can download Adarsh Panchang and use it for 7 days. The 7 days trial period doesn’t list festivals. After 7 days when trial period is over panchang cannot be used without getting it activated. Once trial period is over panchang will prompt for online activation. If user chooses “yes” then device will try to activate panchang online. Please note that one needs Internet connection to activate panchang. We don’t provide any key for panchang activation. Whole registration process and validation is done online without any key. Once panchang is activated one can use it without any further activation or Internet connection (unless one wants to access online help). 4. DEVICE ACTIVATION

Please visit www.adarshapps.com and make payment of Rs.xxx to register the device for panchang activation. It is also possible to register device during trial period. Once we receive the payment we will activate device within few hours. In most cases it doesn’t take more than 24 hours to activate device. Activation would be valid forever for registered device. If due to some reasons user has to reinstall Adarsh Panchang then user can activate it without paying for activation charges. We would recognize registered device and activate it again.

5. FIRST USAGE

It is important to set (or check) panchang location and school type on first usage. Please refer our suggestion below to find school type, Purnimant or Amavasyant, one should select.

5.1 Location

On first usage Adarsh Panchang would prompt user to select location. One should select the nearest city. If user doesn’t select any city then location would be set to historical city Ujjain, India. One can change the location later at any time. To change panchang location, please follow Options->Change Location Panchang provides search option to assist user in city selection. Selected city can be seen in day panchang view. One can switch to day panchang view by tapping any grid cell in month view.

5.2 Purnimant v/s Amavasyant School

Adarsh Panchang provides option to choose either Purnimant or Amavasyant panchang. In both type of panchangs only month names differ and remaining panchang factors including festivals remain unchanged. By default Adarsh Panchang is set to Purnimant which can be changed to Amavasyant. To change school type or to check currently selected school please follow Options->Settings->Panchang Type -> Amavasyant

5.2.1 Amavasyant Panchang

Amavasyant panchangs are followed in south India and consider new moon to mark the beginning of the month. Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Gujarat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Orissa, Tamil Nadu, and other eastern states, generally non-Hindi speaking, follow Amavasyant panchang.

5.2.2 Purnimant Panchang

Purnimant panchangs are followed in north India and consider full moon to mark the beginning of the month. Mostly Hindi speaking states of north India such as Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Jharkhand, MP, Punjab, Rajasthan, UP, etc. follow Purnimant panchang.

5.3 Language

Adarsh Panchang supports both English and Devanagari (Devanagari fonts are used by Hindi, Marathi and Sanskrit languages). By default panchang language is set to English and it can be changed to Devanagari. Reminder (including birthday and anniversary reminders) support is available only in English irrespective of selected language. To change panchang’s language, please follow Options->Settings->Language->Hindi



All above settings are persistent and remembered by Adarsh Panchang. Hence one doesn’t have to set or change the settings on next usage.

6. MONTH VIEW

6.1 Month View - Portrait Mode

When one launches the panchang it shows current Gregorian month with corresponding Hindu dates. Hindu dates are displayed at bottom right corner of grid cells. Skipped Hindu date is shown by putting it together with current date. In grid cell if one sees “3,4” then it means that current Hindu date is 3rd (tritiya) and 4th

(chaturthi) date got skipped.

Full moon days (purnima) and no moon days (amavasya) are shown by marking grid cells by white and black moon icons and by changing background color of grid cell to orange and gray respectively. On rare occasion when full moon day or no moon day is skipped we mark 14th

(chaturdashi) date, which precedes full or no moon date, as full moon day or no moon day respectively.

Leap days can easily be seen in month view. Two consecutive Hindu dates’ subscripts in grid cells would be same on leap day. The first day would be normal (shuddha) day and latter one would be leap (adhik) day.

In month view Hindu date strip (dark gerua color strip at top) shows Hindu date in detail for currently focused day in month grid. Hindu date strip also shows current moon phase with moon icon. All 30 phases of moon are shown with different icons.

MONTH VIEW - PORTRAIT

6.1.1 Navi Pane

Navi pane is available in portrait mode. It moves focus to next or previous year. If panchang is focused on 12/Oct/2010 then by tapping at right corner on navi pane user can move to 12/Oct/2011. If user taps at left corner on navi pane then focus moves to 12/Oct/2009.

6.1.2 Goto Date

Goto Date popup is available in portrait mode. “Goto Date” popup can be launched by tapping at middle of navi pane. User can enter any date between 1/Jan/1583 to 31/Dec/2582 to jump directly on desired day.

6.1.3 Toolbar

Toolbar is available in portrait mode. It offers 3 buttons for easy navigation. • Left button – It moves focus to previous month. • Center Button – It moves focus back to current month and date. • Right button – It moves focus to next month.



6.1.4 Gestures & Sensors

Following gestures and sensors are available in portrait mode • Left and right swipe inside grid moves focus to next and previous month respectively. • Left and right swipe in preview pane moves focus to next and previous day

respectively. • Switch between Portrait to Landscape mode and vice-versa

6.2 Month View - Landscape Mode

Landscape mode doesn’t show titlepane, navipane, toolbar or options menu. However gestures are available in landscape mode. In landscape Adarsh Panchang offers better view vis-à-vis portrait mode.

MONTH VIEW - LANDSCAPE

6.2.1 Festivals

In landscape mode festivals are displayed in 3 separate rows. In portrait mode, if single day contains multiple festivals then festival text is truncated to accommodate in single row. But multiple festivals in single day can be seen clearly in landscape mode. The landscape mode also shows big and clear panchang images.

6.2.2 Gestures & Touch

• Left and right swipe are available inside month grid to move focus to next month and previous month respectively.

• Left and right swipe are available inside preview pane to move focus to next day and previous day respectively.

• By tapping on preview pane (image and festival part) one can switch to festival view. To get back to month view one can tap inside festival view.

• By tapping single cell in month grid one can switch to day panchang view. To get back to month view one can tap inside day panchang view.

6.2.3 Long Press

Long tap or press inside preview pane is available in landscape mode to go back to current date. This is the only way to go back to current date as toolbar button is not available in landscape mode.

7. DAY PANCHANG VIEW

Day panchang view provides following panchang details for each day.

DAY PANCHANG VIEW - PORTRAIT

Apart from the above details preview pane and Hindu date strip are available in day panchang view. 7.1 Timings mentioned in Day Panchang View

The English day is measured from midnight to midnight. Hence clock is reset at midnight along with the date and the day. The Hindu day is measured from sunrise to sunrise. Unlike English dates, Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, Karana (panchang elements) do not start or end at midnight. The panchang elements can end at anytime during the day. Hence day panchang view shows end times of panchang elements. If Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana ends before midnight then their times will be normal, but in 24 hour format. If panchang elements end after midnight but before next sunrise, then their time will be more than 24. Which means if panchang elements end at 1:27:10 a.m. then panchang would show it as 25:27:10+ and 2:31:00 a.m. would be shown as 26:31:00+. Symbol ‘+’ emphasizes that end time is between English day midnight and next day sunrise. Further, if end time is after next day sunrise then panchang shows it as “Full Night”. All Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga, and Karana including Sun and Moon sign (Suryarashi and Chandrarashi) show end times. All timings in Panchang view are local to current location. The Daylight Saving Time (DST) has been adjusted for all locations supported by Adarsh Panchang. 7.2 Day Panchang View - Portrait Mode

7.2.1 Navi pane

Navi pane is available in portrait mode. It moves focus to next or previous month. If panchang is focused on 12/Oct/2010 then by tapping at right corner on navi pane user can move to 12/Nov/2010. If user taps at left corner on navi pane then focus moves to 12/Sep/2010.

7.2.2 Goto Date

Goto Date popup is available in portrait mode. “Goto Date” popup can be launched by tapping at middle of navi pane. User can enter any date between 1/Jan/1583 to 31/Dec/2582 to jump directly to desired day.



7.2.3 Toolbar

Preview pane is landscape mode works similar to month view. The gestures and touch available in day panchang view are same as those in month view.

DAY PANCHANG VIEW - LANDSCAPE

7.3.1 Festivals

In landscape mode festivals are displayed in 3 separate rows. In portrait mode, if single day contains multiple festivals then festival text is truncated to accommodate in single row. But multiple festivals in single day can be seen clearly in landscape mode. The landscape mode also shows big and clear panchang images.

7.3.3 Long Press

Long tap/press inside preview pane is available in landscape mode to go back to current date. This is the only way to go back to current date as toolbar button is not available in landscape mode.

8. MONTH FESTIVAL VIEW

Month festival view lists all festivals in currently focused month. It provides navigation buttons for next and previous month. Other events, apart from festivals, listed in month festival view are

MONTH FESTIVAL VIEW - PORTRAIT

Panchang provides year festival view also. In this view Panchang shows all festivals and events in currently focused year. 8.1 Month Festival View - Portrait Mode

8.1.1 Navi pane

Navi pane is available in portrait mode. It moves focus to next or previous year. If panchang is focused on Oct/2010 then by tapping at right corner on navi pane user can move to Oct/2011. If user taps at left corner on navi pane then focus moves to Oct/2009.

8.1.2 Goto Date

Goto Date popup is available in portrait mode. “Goto Date” popup can be launched by tapping at middle of navi pane. User can enter any month between Jan/1583 to Dec/2582 to jump directly on desired month.

8.1.3 Toolbar

9.1.1 Navi pane

Navi pane is available in portrait mode. It moves focus to 10 years ahead or back. If panchang is focused on 2010 then by tapping at right corner on navi pane user can move to 2020. If user taps at left corner on navi pane then focus moves to 2000.

9.1.2 Goto Date

Goto Date popup is available in portrait mode. “Goto Date” popup can be launched by tapping at middle of navi pane. User can enter any year from 1583 to 2582 to jump directly on desired year.

9.1.3 Toolbar

Toolbar is available in portrait mode. It offers 3 buttons for easy navigation. • Left button – It moves focus to previous year. • Center Button – It moves focus back to current year. • Right button – It moves focus to next year.

9.2 Year Festival View - Landscape Mode

YEAR FESTIVAL VIEW - LANDSCAPE


• Left and right swipe inside year festival view moves focus to next and previous year respectively.

• By tapping inside year festival view one can switch back to month view.

10. FESTIVAL PREVIEW PANE

Preview pane is visible in month view and day panchang view. It shows 12 different images, one for each month. Image changes with month. Preview pane replaces standard month image by festival image for most Hindu festivals. In portrait mode multiple festivals are truncated to accommodate in a single festival row. But in landscape mode preview pane shows bigger image along with 3 separate festival rows. In both mode landscape and portrait preview pane shows currently focused Gregorian date in dd/mmm/yyyy (weekday) format. Preview doesn’t display/mix user set reminders along with festivals. However preview pane shows indicator for reminder if reminder is set for currently focused day. If reminder is birthday type then birthday icon is given priority over simple reminder icon. One can go to users’ reminder list by long pressing on preview pane in portrait mode. However in landscape mode long press inside preview pane moves the focus on current day. Left and right swipe are available in preview pane to move focus to next and previous day respectively. 11. HINDU DATE STRIP

It is visible in month view and day panchang view.



In month view Hindu date strip (dark gerua color strip at top) shows Hindu date in detail for currently focused day in month grid. Hindu date strip also shows moon icon for currently focused day. It shows 30 different phases of moon with unique icons for all phases. Hindu date “9 Vaishakha-Adhika(K) 2067 V.E.” can be interpreted as following 9 = Navami (similarly ‘P’ means purnima, ‘A’ means amavasya, etc.) Vaishakha = current month (depends on chosen school type) Adhika = It shows that current month is not normal month but leap one (K) = Krishna Paksha ((S) for Shukla Paksha) 2067 = Hindu Year V.E. = Vikram Era/Samvat 12. REMINDER SUPPORT

Adarsh Panchang comes with reminder support. Users might find it the coolest feature added to panchang. Users can add reminder which can be changed to Birthday or Anniversary i.e. simple reminders can be morphed to anniversary and vice-versa. 12.1 Reminder List View

One can see all reminders, including birthday and anniversary by following Options->Show reminders Reminders can be viewed, deleted and edited from reminder list. One can add new reminder from either reminder list view or main options menu. We highlight month grid cells with green triangle (at top right corner) to indicate that this day contains some user event(s). In preview pane we show appropriate icon (either note or birthday icon) to indicate presence of reminder(s) in currently focused day. 12.2 Setting a Reminder

Reminder editor can be launched either from main options menu or reminder list view’s options menu. In reminder view list long tap can also be used inside free space (if available) to get “add reminder” stylus popup.

PANCHANG ALARM EXPIRING

To add reminder from main options menu please follow



Options -> Add Reminder and set following fields.

• Is anniversary birthday – “No” (by default this field is set to “No”)

• Gregorian Date

• Enter Time

• Enter “Details”. Please note that current description limit is 50 characters.

• Alarm “On”

• Alarm Date – By default we set alarm date on same day as reminder date. However user can change it to any other date before reminder date.

• Alarm Time – By default we set alarm time to 15 minutes before sunrise time on reminder

date. However it can be reset to any other time.

12.3 Setting a Birthday/Anniversary Reminder

It is easy to set loved one’s birthday or anniversaries with Adarsh Panchang. If one knows the Gregorian date of birth and if the birth time was before sunrise or after sunrise (i.e. if the birth time was between midnight 00:00 and sunrise time in Gregorian calendar) then one can set Hindu date of birth or anniversary easily. To add birthday or anniversary reminder from main options menu please follow Options -> Add Reminder and set following fields.

• Is anniversary birthday – “yes” (by default this field is set to “No”)

• Gregorian Date of Birth – Please enter

date of birth here

• Location – It is important to provide birth location. One should choose the nearest available location. If user has set main panchang location as London, UK (as user has settled down in UK), but user was born at Kolkata, India then user should choose Kolkata, India as birth location.

• Birth Before Sunrise – One doesn’t need to know precise birth time to know Hindu birthday. If one knows if birth was before sunrise or after sunrise then it is enough to know exact Hindu date of birth.

BIRTHDAY EDITOR



• Hindu Date of Birth – This field shows Hindu date of birth on chosen location. It is changed if

user changes birth location or birth time before sunrise or after sunrise field. (Please note that this field cannot be set!)

• Description – User can give brief description for the birthday or anniversary. E.g. “Sachin Birthday!” Please note that current description limit is 50 characters.

• Next Birthday – Next Birthday shows next Gregorian birthday date. Next birthday date is calculated based on main Panchang location. We don’t use birth location to get next birthday. It is correct also. One should celebrate birthday according to current location. If your loved one is with you in London, UK then you should observer the birthday when similar Hindu birth date prevails in London, UK and not when similar Hindu date prevails at birth location e.g. in Kolkata, India. (Please note that this field cannot be set!)

• Birthday Reminder Type o Hindu Calendar – by default it is set. o Gregorian Calendar – If user selects it then birthday reminders are set according to

Gregorian calendar. If user entered Gregorian date of birth as 1/Jan/1991 then next birthday would be on 1/Jan/2011 if current year is 2010.

• Alarm “On”

• Alarm Date – By default we set alarm date one day before birthday or anniversary. It can reset to any date till midnight of next birthday date.

• Alarm Time – By default alarm time is set to sunset time, one day before birthday. However it can be reset to any time.

WARNING – please note that next birthdays or anniversaries dates MIGHT become invalid if user changes main panchang location. E.g. if user has set birthday while main panchang location was London, UK and changes it to Kolkata, India then next birthday would be still for London, UK. However once lined up birthday expires then next one would be calculated for Kolkata, India.

User needs to set birthday or anniversary reminders only once. Adarsh Panchang always lists next birthday or anniversary and when it expires it sets the birthday for next year. 13. MENU OPTIONS

Options menu is available in portrait mode. Available options are

• Add Reminder – Handy option while adding quick note or birthday • Show Reminders – takes user to personal reminders list • Change Location – takes user to country/city list • Year Festivals – shows all festivals in focused year • Settings – simply launch the setting page • Image Source – shows source of the currently displayed image in preview pane (if preview

pane is visible) • About – shows current panchang version and publisher’s contact details • Help – it takes you to online Adarsh Panchang help page by launching default in-build

browser. • Exit – ask for user confirmation before exit



14. MISCELLANEOUS

14.1 Mid Night Cross Over

Day cross over – at mid night when day changes Adarsh Panchang reset focus to current day. If current focused day is 31/Dec/2010 then at midnight 00:00 calendar focus will move to 01/Jan/2011, if panchang is kept open or is running in the background. Midnight day cross over happens for all panchang views. Only exception is reminder list which needs to be closed and reopened to get it updated for expired reminders. 14.2 Know your Sunsign

Users can check their sunsign in day panchang view. User can switch to day panchang view by tapping on any day cell in month grid.

• In day panchang view tap on navi pane (Gregorian date) at top to get “Goto Date” prompt • Enter your date of birth (on Gregorian Calendar) and press “Ok” • Check the "Sun" row (third row from bottom) in currently visible day panchang view (Please

make sure that you consider your birth time while looking your sunsign. If your birth time is 07:30:22 a.m. and sunsign shows "Makara 06:30:12" then your sunsign would be shown on next day panchang view as Makara sign got over at 06:30:12).

When panchang shows "Makara 06:30:12" it means that Makara sign is getting over at "06:30:12". Hence one has to consider next day sunsign as birth sunsign. 14.3 Know your Moonsign

Users can check their moonsign in day panchang view. User can switch to day panchang view by tapping on any day cell in month grid.

• In day panchang view tap on navi pane (Gregorian date) at top to get “Goto Date” prompt • Enter your date of birth (on Gregorian Calendar) and press “Ok” • Check the "Moon" row (second last from bottom) in currently visible day panchang view

(Please make sure that you consider your birth time while looking your moonsign. If your birth time is 07:30:22 a.m. and moonsign shows "Makara 06:30:12" then your moonsign would be shown on next day panchang view as Makara sign got over at 06:30:12).

When panchang shows "Makara 06:30:12" it means that Makara sign is getting over at "06:30:12". Hence one has to consider next day moonsign as birth moonsign. 15. HINDU SUNRISE AND SUNSET

Hindu sunrise and sunset are not observational and should not be matched with those published in various news papers. All daily newspapers give sunrise timings when the edge of the disk is visible above eastern horizon. For astrological calculation this sunrise cannot be used. For religious and astrology purposes the time when the middle of the sun's disk rises above eastern is used. All festival determinations are done based on 'madhyabimb darshan' when middle of the disk becomes visible at eastern horizon. However Hindu sunrise and sunset can be matched with published sunrise and sunset within 10 minutes range for most locations.



16. SURYA SIDDHANTIC V/S DRIK GANITA

Adarsh Panchang is based on Drik Ganita and use precise moment for planetary events. One should not match panchangs based on Drik Ganita with those based on Surya-Siddhanta. Adarsh Panchang generates eclipse data for 1000 years from 1583 C.E to 2582 C.E. Our Eclipse data (for both solar and lunar eclipses) can be matched with online data provided by NASA. 17.1 Solar

Solar eclipse could be total, annual, hybrid or partial. Adarsh Panchang doesn’t differentiate among various types of solar eclipses and list all type of eclipses as solar eclipse. Solar eclipse might not be visible at your location but it would be listed by Adarsh Panchang.

17.2 Lunar

Lunar eclipses could be of one of three types 1. Penumbral Lunar Eclipse – It occurs when the Moon passes through Earth’s penumbral

shadow. 2. Partial Lunar Eclipse – It occurs when a portion of the Moon passes through Earth’s

umbral shadow 3. Total Lunar Eclipse – It occurs when the entire Moon passes through Earth’s umbral

shadow

Penumbral lunar eclipses are subtle and hard to observe. Because of that penumbral eclipses are useful only for academic purpose. Adarsh Panchang doesn’t list penumbral lunar eclipse and ignore them. Adarsh Panchang doesn’t differentiate between partial and total lunar eclipses and list both of them as lunar eclipse. Lunar eclipse might not be visible at your location but it would be listed by Adarsh Panchang.

Currently Adarsh Panchang lists Ekadashis based on Smarth Sect. Most of the festivals follow rules prescribed by Smarth Sect. 22. LOCATION CHANGE AND DEVICE TIME CHANGE - WARNINGS!

1. Panchang alarms are not reset if UTC time is changed on device. However if user changes clock time then Adarsh Panchang would reset alarms’ time accordingly. In other words panchang alarms are not affected if user changes current time zone on device but get shifted or expire accordingly if user changes system clock time.

2. Please note that next birthday or anniversary dates MIGHT become invalid if user changes main panchang location. If user has set birthday while Panchang location was London, UK and later changes it to Kolkata, India then next birthday would be still for London, UK. However once lined up birthday expires then next one would be calculated for Kolkata, India.

3. Daylight Saving rules are considered based on rules which are applicable for 2010-11. Daylight saving rules might change in coming future. Also current daylight saving rules might not be valid for past years. However such variation or adjustment in DST (Daylight Saving Timings) doesn’t affect festivals and birthday dates. Hindu calendar doesn’t consider DST for calculations and in Adarsh Panchang DST gets adjusted just before timings are shown to user.
