Scene 1: The Street.

Romeo: Stop! Stop fighting!

Tybalt: Never! I’ll kill him. And I’ll kill you!

Mercutio: Just you try it! Come on…

Romeo: Quick! The police! The police are coming.

Tybalt: I’ll get you later. I’ll kill you! I’ll kill you both!

Mercutio: That was great!

Romeo: That was stupid. Mercutio, why were you fighting with Tybalt again?

Mercutio: Why was I fighting with Tybalt? Because he’s a Capulet, of course, and I hate all Capulets. The Capulets are our sworn enemies, But you never fight with them. Why not? Are you a coward Romeo? Eh! Are you a chicken?

Romeo: No! Get off! I’m not a coward. But I don’t want to fight. Fighting is stupid. One day you will die fighting and what for? Some stupid hatred between The Capulets and The Montagues. Tell me why you hate the Capulets. Why? Why do you hate them?

Mercutio: Because…because…because I do!

Romeo: You see you don’t even know why. It’s stupid. It’s very sad.

Romeo: I know, but it’s a Capulet party in a Capulet disco. There will be a lot of fighting.

Mercutio: Oh come on! Look. I promise I won’t fight. I won’t fight and I’ll just dance, dance and talk to all the pretty girls.

Romeo: But Tybalt will see us and he will want to fight.

Mercutio: No, Tybalt won’t see us. It’s a fancy dress party; we have to dress up, like carnival.

Romeo: Like carnival? We could wear masks or wigs!

Mercutio: Yes! We could wear masks or wigs and nobody will know who we are. Well, what do you say? Are we going to the party, to see Rosaline, or are we staying here to get bored?

Romeo: OK. Come on. Let’s go to the party. But promise me - no fighting.

Mercutio: Not just a little bit?

Scene 2: Juliet’s bedroom.

Mother: Juliet! Juliet! Turn that music down! Turn it down! It’s much too loud.

Juliet: What? I can’t hear you.

Mother: Turn it down I said, it’s too loud.

Juliet: What do you want?

Mother: I want to talk to you. I want to talk to you about Paris.

Juliet: Paris! Are we going to Paris?

Mother: No! Not Paris the city. Paris the person. Paris, that handsome, gorgeous, good-looking boy that lives down the street.

Scene 3: The Party.

Juliet: Yes! It’s true, I’m a Capulet. Are you a Montague like he says?

Scene 4: The Balcony.

Juliet: Oh my god. I don’t believe it. I finally meet the most handsome boy in the world and he’s a Montague. Where’s my diary? Ah,here. Now, let’s see. Michael, yuck Jack, too tall, James, too short, Paris, forget it! Now, Ro-me-o, what a great name! Tall, dark and handsome and he likes me and he kisses really well!

Romeo: (off) Juliet! Juliet! It’s me, out here, Romeo!

Juliet: Romeo! Is that you? Be careful. What are you doing here? It’s really dangerous. If my parents catch you they’ll kill you!

Romeo: I don’t care. You’re worth it! I don’t care if they kill me! Juliet, I really like you!

Juliet: Me too. I really like you!

Romeo: Yeah, but I mean this is different. I know I’ve only just met you. But…I mean I really, really like you.

Juliet: I know what you mean. I feel the same. I mean, I really, really like you too.

Romeo: Yeah, but I mean, I mean…I really, really…I love you.

Juliet: Oh my god! He loves me, he loves me!

Romeo: Juliet, are you still there?

Juliet: Yes, yes. Romeo, I love you too!

R/J: Oh my god!!

Juliet: But what are we going to do? You are a Montague and I am a Capulet. My parents will kill me if they find out that you are my boyfriend!

Juliet: Yes, I do love you, but marriage! Wow! Why not? It’ll really irritate my mother! Yes I’ll marry you, I’ll marry you Romeo.

Mother: (off) Juliet! Be quiet! It’s late. Go to sleep!

Juliet: Sssh! That’s her. You must go!

Romeo: Ok then, we’ll go to Friar Lawrence. We’ll go to Friar Lawrence’s house and he will marry us there. He’s really cool and modern and he will understand.

Juliet: Ok, but I have to get dressed. I can’t possibly get married dressed like this. Give me 5 minutes . No, give me 10 minutes and I’ll meet you at Friar Lawrence’s house, ok?

Romeo: Ok, but don’t take too long. We must get married quickly before anyone finds out. Goodbye Juliet…

Scene 5: Friar’s house.

Romeo: I know, that’s why I want you to help us. I want you to marry me and Juliet.

Friar: What? Marry you and Juliet Capulet! You’re crazy!

Friar: Yes, I know but I love her. I’ve never felt like this before. If I can’t marry Juliet I’ll die. I’ll die from a broken heart. Friar you must help us!

Friar: Calm down, here, have some herbal tea. This herbal tea is very good for the nerves. Better? Good. Now, tell me, do you really love Juliet?

Friar: OK. I will speak to your parents, go now. Quick, waste no time. I need some more herbal tea! Oh dear what have I done!

Scene 6: The Street.

Tybalt: Hey you, Montague! Where is your friend, Romeo, I want to fight with him, not you.

Mercutio: If you want to fight with Romeo, you’ll have to kill me first.

Tybalt: Well, it will be my pleasure. I’ve always wanted to kill a Montague.

Romeo: Stop! Tybalt! Mercutio don’t fight,

Tybalt: Ah, here he is. The great lover Romeo! You think you can kiss my cousin and live? You can kiss my ass and die!

Romeo: Stop. I don’t want to fight you. Tybalt, I’m not your enemy. The Montagues and The Capulets are going to be friends. We are going to be family.

Tybalt: Friends? Family? What are you talking about? Come on, get your knife out and fight like a man.

Mercutio: What are you doing Romeo? Why don’t you fight him?

Romeo: I don’t want to fight him, Mercutio. I want to be friends with him.

Mercutio: Friends with a Capulet? Never! If you won’t fight, then I will. (They fight) He’s killed me, he’s really done it, it was just a game, Romeo, a game…(dies)

Romeo: You’ve killed him.

Tybalt: Yeah, but he-

Romeo: You’ve killed him. (Picks up knife and stabs Tybalt. He dies.) What have I done? I’ve killed Juliet’s cousin. Juliet’s cousin! She will hate me. I must get out of here. The Friar will help.

Scene 7: Juliet’s bedroom.

Mother: Juliet, can we come in? Your daddy and I have some bad news.

Juliet: Wait a minute…Ok, you can come in now. What’s wrong? You two look terrible. You look like someone died.

Father: Jules we have some very bad news.

Juliet: Bad news. What? What’s happened?

Father: You better sit down.

Juliet: I don’t want to sit down. What is it?

Mother: Oh Juliet, it’s terrible, your cousin, Tybalt. He’s dead!

Juliet: Tybalt, dead, that’s impossible.

Father: Yes it’s true, Jules, he’s been killed. Killed by a Montague .

Juliet: Killed by a Montague? Who? Who killed him?

Mother: Romeo, that dirty murderer Romeo.

Mother: (off) Juliet, the Friar is here to see you.

Romeo: Friar Lawrence will help us. Listen to Friar Lawrence. He’ll have a plan. He’ll tell me what the plan is. Tell him to send me a message. A message.

Mother: (off) Juliet

Mother: Friar? (off )

Juliet: Goodbye, Friar. Thank you. Now I must drink this medicine. I am scared. What if it really is poison! What if it kills me! What if I never wake up! No, I must drink it. It is the only way. Scene 9: Inside the Tomb

Romeo: The Friar said he would phone me. Come on! Why doesn’t he phone me? I need to know what the plan is. I need to know what has happened. I’ll phone him. Oh no, I don’t have his number. He took my number, but I didn’t take his. I’ll just have to wait. Look, I bought this poison. If they catch me for killing Tybalt I will take this poison and die. I’ll kill myself before they put me in prison! What’s this? Wow, it’s the Capulet’s family tomb. Tybalt’s in there. Poor Tybalt. I didn’t want to kill him. But he killed Mercutio. Mercutio was my best friend. I will go in and say a last goodbye to Tybalt. Juliet? Oh my god! Juliet! What has happened? She’s not breathing, she’s dead! Oh Juliet! I loved you more than anyone else in the world, but now you’re dead. I can’t live without you Juliet. If you are dead then I will die, too. This will be our last kiss. I will kill myself with your knife and finally we will be together. (She dies)

Friar: Perhaps, Verona will be peaceful now. There’s no sun this morning. Let’s go home. Let’s go home and remember this, the sad, sad story of Juliet and her Romeo.
