SUPPLEMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM

The Acura TL SRS includes a drivers airbag located in the steering wheel hub and a passengers airbag located in the dashboard abovethe glove box. Information necessary to safely service the SRS is included in this Service Manual. Items marked with an asterisk (*) onthe contents page include, or are located near, SRS components. Servicing, disassembling or replacing these items will require specialprecautions and tools, and should therefore be done by an authorized Honda dealer.

WARNING

To avoid rendering the SRS inoperative, which could lead to personal injury or death in the event of a severe frontalcollision, all SRS service work must be performed by an authorized Honda dealer.

Improper service procedures, including incorrect removal and installation of the SRS, could lead to personal injurycaused by unintentional activation of the front airbags, seat belt tensioners, and side airbags (99-01 models).

Do not bump the SRS unit. Otherwise, the system may fail in a collision, or the airbags may deploy when the ignitionswitch in ON (II).

All SRS electrical wiring harnesses are covered with yellow insulation. Related components are located in the steeringcolumn, front console, dashboard, dashboard lower panel, in the dashboard above the glove box. Do not use electricaltest equipment on these circuits.

NOTE: The original radio has a coded theft protection circuit. Be sure to get the customers code number before disconnecting the battery. removing the No. 39 (10A) fuse from the underhood fuse/relay box. removing the radio.After service, reconnect power to the radio and turn it on. When the word CODE is displayed, enter the customers 5-digit code to restoreradio operation.

Lift and Support Points

FRONT SUPPORT POINT REAR SUPPORT POINTLIFT BLOCKS

Lift and Safety Stands1. Place the lift blocks as shown.

2. Raise the hoist a few inches (centimeters), and rock the vehicle to be sure it is firmly supported.

3. Raise the hoist to full height, and inspect the lift points for solid support.

NOTE: Use the same support points to support the vehicle on safety stands.

Floor Jack

1. Set the parking brake, and block the wheels that arenot being lifted.

2. When lifting the rear of the vehicle, put the shiftlever in position.

3. Raise the vehicle high enough to insert the safetystands.

4. Adjust and place the safety stands so the vehiclewill be approximately level, then lower the vehicleonto them.

Always use safety stands when working on or underany vehicle that is supported by only a jack.Never attempt to use a bumper jack for lifting orsupporting the vehicle.

Towing

If the vehicle needs to be towed, call a professional tow-ing service. Never tow the vehicle behind another vehi-cle with just a rope or chain. It is very dangerous.

Emergency TowingThere are three popular methods of towing a vehicle:

Flat-bed Equipment The operator loads the vehicle onthe back of a truck. This is the best way of transporting thevehicle.

Wheel Lift Equipment The tow truck uses two pivotingarms that go under the tires (front or rear) and lifts themoff the ground. The other two wheels remain on theground.

Sling-type Equipment The tow truck uses metal cableswith hooks on the ends. These hooks go around parts ofthe frame or suspension and the cables lift that end ofthe vehicle off the ground. The vehicle's suspension andbody can be seriously damaged if this method of towingis attempted.

If the vehicle cannot be transported by flat-bed, it shouldbe towed with the front wheels off the ground. If due todamage, the vehicle must be towed with the frontwheels on the ground, do the following:

Release the parking brake.Start the engine.Shift to position, then position.Turn off the engine.

CAUTION:Improper towing preparation will damage the trans-mission. Follow the above procedure exactly. If youcannot shift the transmission or start the engine, thevehicle must be transported on a flat-bed.It is best to tow the vehicle no farther than 50 miles(80 km), and keep the speed below 35 mph (55 km/h).Trying to lift or tow the vehicle by the bumpers willcause serious damage. The bumpers are not designedto support the vehicle's weight.
