  • DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION

    Interarts designs and implements internationaldevelopment cooperation projects with a culturaldimension. We believe that culture is both a driver andfacilitator of sustainable human development.

    CONSULTANCY

    Interarts provides consultancy services for private andpublic bodies alike. We share the knowledge we haveacquired in various areas with public and privateoperators.

    KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER

    Interarts runs training and informative activities,including seminars and conferences. We host studentsfrom various international higher education institutionsthrough our training programme. We provide updatedinformation on our activities and or topics relevant tothe culture sector on our websites and socialnetworks.al.

    APPLIED RESEARCH

    Interarts defines itself as an ideas laboratory andapplied research centre. We focus on emerging issuesthat are relevant to the cultural sector and culturalpolicies.

    NETWORKING & ADVOCACY

    Interarts has always been an active member ofEuropean cultural networks. We believe thatnetworking strengthens our organisation and allows usto take part in current debates on fundamentallysignificant issues in the cultural sector, claiming thedecisive role of culture in European governance.European.

    Interarts was founded in 1995. From itsheadquarters in Barcelona, Interarts performs itsinternational activities through an extensivenetwork of organisations and associatedprofessionals. We have offices in Lima, Peru andPristina, Kosovo.

    Interarts operates in systems where there is freeparticipation. We design proposals that wepresents to open calls and tenders, both public andprivate. Interarts does not receive operationalsupport from private or public funds. We are non-profit making and we define ourselves both as annon-governmental organisation and/or a civilsociety organisation.

    DECIDES Caribbean2015 - 2018

    The project “DECIDES Caribbean – Cultural rights topromote behavioural change and empower womenagainst domestic violence in Barbados and the EasternCaribbean” is part of the DECIDES Programme(Cultural rights to promote development and health)that Interarts has been running since 2007 in Africa andLatin America, with funding from various organisationsand the collaboration of local partners. organisation ofdifferent organisms y la collaboration of local partners.

    DECIDES Caribbean is implemented by a consortiumled by Interarts in conjunction with CaribbeanWomen’s Association (CARIWA), Advocates for SafeParenthood (Saint Lucia) Inc. (ASPIRE) and WomenAgainst Rape Inc. (WAR), supervised by theDelegation of the European Union to Barbados, theEastern Caribbean States, OECS andCARICOM/CARIFORUM and co-funded by theEuropean Union under the European instrument forDemocracy and Human Rights (EIDHR). Its aim is toreduce domestic violence in Barbados and the EasternCaribbean by promoting cultural changes in societyand improving the capacity of civil social organisation(CSOs) to combat it.

    d The project is aimed at several beneficiaries: civil societyorganisations (CSOs), professionals linked to the issue,teachers, and religious leaders. In particular it addressesthe cultural dimension of this issue on several levels:increasing general knowledge of domestic violence;building the capacities of CSOs through workshops andpeer learning avoiding a cultural bias amongprofessionals through learning associations, and creatinga stakeholder network; and raising public awarenessthrough cultural events and products and publiccampaigns.

  • One of the core activities of DECIDES Caribbean isresearch into domestic violence in Antigua based intwo districts of Antigua (St. John and St. Philip) and onein Barbuda (St. Mary). Coordinated by AlexandrinaWong, chair of Women Against Rape Inc. (WAR), alocal partner of DECIDES Caribbean in Antigua, theprincipal investigator, Dr. Rawwida Baksh, and fieldresearchers, Amy Hasset and Koren Norton, gathereddata on reported and unreported cases and workedwith other related professionals such as the police,judges, refuge centres, health professionals, socialworkers and lawyers to understand the instrumentsthey have to control this behaviour and pinpoint theirattitudes towards domestic violence and its victims.

    In parallel to the research, workshops were held forrepresentatives of civil society organisations (CSOs) inseveral Caribbean states (Dominica, Grenada, SaintKitts and Nevis and Saint Vincent and the Grenadinesand Saint Lucia) on the three dimensions of DECIDESCaribbean: 1) research methodology, data collectionand analysis; 2) project cycle management, financingopportunities and international cooperation; and 3)activism and lobbying. The aim of the workshops wasto build CSOs’ capacity to document and analysedomestic violence in their sphere of action. Nationalauthorities and other key actors engaged in andsupported the workshops, ensuring the sustainability ofDECIDES Caribbean beyond the completion of theproject.

    Outcomes

    ✓ Analysis of the main characteristics of domestic violence to guide public policy.

    ✓ Strengthen capacity of CSOs and women to tackle domestic violence, and to dialogue and do advocacy with key stakeholders.

    ✓ Improvement perception and ability of professionals in the political, judicial and health sectors to meet the needs of victims and to create a network for Domestic Violence Response Teams.

    ✓ Raised awareness of domestic violence within the general community through public recognition of the problem and behavioural changes.

    An animation workshop with secondary school pupilsfrom Saint John’s School Christian Faith Academy wasalso held in Antigua and Barbuda on the theme ofdomestic and gender-based violence. This aimed toprovide young people with a space for reflection anddebate on a problem that is very present in their dailylives. Led by PDA Films, the collaboration of WomanAgainst Rape (WAR) enabled the workshop, which 15boys and girls aged 16-18 years attended. In addition, thetrainers gave a masterclass to the authorities andteachers on the workshop methodology, technique andexamples so that local teachers could lead the workshopsthemselves in the future.

    DECIDES Caribbean was one of the projects presentedat the Interarts stand at European Development Days(EDD) 2018, where video interviews with key agents inthe project were made.

    One if the biggest DECIDES Caribbean activities wasthe inauguration of the “1 IN 3” exhibition in Barbados,which was curated by the World Banks’s ArtProgramme in Washington DC with the aim of raisingawareness about the global scourge of gender-basedviolence. Sponsored by the World Bank, UN Womenand Interarts , with the support of the European Union,the exhibition was part of the campaign for the 16 Daysof Activism 2017 against gender-based violence and theDECIDES Caribbean project..

  • “SouthMed WiA – Towards greater gender equality:promoting the role and image of SouthernMediterranean women in the audiovisual sector” is aproject funded by the European Union under theregional programme Med Film.

    SouthMed WiA aims to build capacities of audiovisualprofessionals and operators in the SouthernMediterranean and contribute to sustainabledevelopment and cultural diversity by improvingwomen’s image in the film industry. It is implementedby a consortium led by Interarts (Spain) and four non-governmental organisations: High School ofAudiovisual and Cinema (ESAC), Tunisia; Culture &Media Agency Europe (CUMEDIAE), Belgium;Permanent Conference of the MediterraneanAudiovisual Operators (COPEAM), Italy; and ScreenInstitute Beirut (SIB), Lebanon.

    Through two calls for proposals in 2017 and 2018,SouthMed WiA has given financial support to eightprojects aimed at promoting gender equality in theaudiovisual sector in seven countries in the SouthernMediterranean: Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon,Morocco, Palestine y Tunisia.

    In the first call. 3 proposals were selected to receive agrant: “Women: words and cinema”, coordinated byCinemathèque de Tanger, Morocco; “Breaking taboos

    and changing the image of women in audiovisual sectorin the Arab region”, coordinated by Muntada - The ArabForum for Education, Sexuality and ReproductiveHealth, Palestine; and “Women’s monologues”,coordinated by Wasabi, Tunisia. In the second call, 5proposals were selected: “New audiovisual society,women… for women”, coordinated by Theatre DayProductions (TDP), Palestine; “Gender representation inEgyptian media”, coordinated by Tadwein GenderResearch Center, Egypt; “Fostering gender equality formen and women behind the camera“, coordinated byCentre of Arab Women for Training and Research(CAWTAR), Tunisia; “Digital storytellers for genderequality”, coordinated by ABAAD – Resource Center forGender Equality, Association for Development andAlternative Media, Lebanon; “Women to Women (W2W)”,coordinated by UNAM Documentation and Research,Jordan.

  • During the project execution, SouthMed WiA supportsthese 8 projects by providing activities for capacitybuilding, networking and continuous coahing. Thesessions were held in Tunisia in synergy with the 28thsession of the famous Journées Cinematographiquesde Carthage, in Barcelona in collaboration with theCentre for Women’s Culture, Francesca Bonnemaison –la Bonne, the Beirut Film Society and in Alicante,Spainm in collaboration with the Casa Mediterráneo.

    Meetings were also organised for professionals in Cairo,Egypt, with the Danish-Egyptian Dialogue Institute andin Marrakech Morocco, with the School of Visual Arts –ESAV.

    The project was also presented at the Interarts stand atEuropean Development Days (EDD) 2018 (Brussels,June), to the Master’s in Intermediterranean Medation(MIN) (Barcelona, November) at the UniversidadAutónoma in Barcelona and at the high-levelconference “Re-thinking the Euro-Mediterraneancultural partnership” (Tunisia, November).

    ✓ Strengthened capacities of professional women and operators in the audiovisual sector in 7 Mediterranean countries (Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine y Tunisia).

  • As part of the DECIDES Programme (Cultural rights topromote development and heath), this project ran inTrinidad and Tobago – Cultural rights to promoterespect for human rights and freedoms from gender-based violence and discrimination against LGBTIcollective LGBTI in Trinidad and Tobago”, drawing onthe experience of another ongoing project, DECIDESCaribbean. Like that project, DECIDES Trinidad andTobago entails research, training and awarenessactivities aimed at eradicating prejudice and bringingabut behavioural changes. The organisationsimplementing the project – Advocates for SafeParenthood (St. Lucia) Inc. (ASPIRE), CaribbeanAssociation for Feminist Research and Action(CAFRA) e Interarts – will seek synergies andcooperation with women’s and LGBTI organisations.DECIDES Trinidad and Tobago is co-financed by theEuropean Commission through the EuropeanInstrument for Democracy and Human Rights(EIDHR) and supervised by the Delegation of theEuropean Union in Trinidad and Tobago.

    Its core activities include a call for proposals for projectsaimed at safeguarding and promoting the right of theLGBTI community in Trinidad and Tobago. The projectselected in the call is “Redefining the Politics ofGender”, coordinated by the NGO Friends for Life, inassociation with The Silver Lining Foundation, the of

    Which is to create a participatory community movementthat can influence both local politics and globalprocesses, to transform the debate on gender policies.DECIDES Trinidad and Tobago provides support bymeans of capacity-building and networking dynamicsthrough the project execution.

    DECIDES Trinidad and Tobago has its own website(www.decides-tt.org) where all articles, news and imageson the training and awareness activities can be found.The website and the DecidesTT Facebook and Instagramprofiles, which have 193 and 136 followers (1) respectively,were used to carry out the #YouDecideTT campaign ofDECIDES Trinidad and Tobago, which includes followingup on international dates on the promotion of humanrights and cultural rights against gender-based violenceand discrimination against the LGBTI community.

  • A photography competition was also held toencourage people from Trinidad and Tobago to sharetheir vision of there issues with the world. At the end ofthe competition the photos were published in theproject’s various communications networks.

    Furthermore, research into gender-based violence anddiscrimination against the LEGBTI community inTrinidad and Tobago was carried out, led by theprincipal investigator Dr. Rawwida Baksh, along withfield researchers Samantha Rattan and Remelle White,with editing and supervision by Interarts. For thereport the researchers gathered data on reported andunreported cases and worked with other relatedprofessionals such as the police, judges, refuge centres,health professionals, social workers and lawyers tounderstand the instruments they have to control thisbehaviour and pinpoint their attitudes towards gender-based violence and its victims. A series of infographicsto disseminate the main research data is available onthe Interarts communication networks.

    Outcomes

    ✓ Improved data collection and knowledge of key trends and characteristics regarding gender-based violence and LGBTI discrimination.

    ✓ Strengthened capacity of civil society organisations (CSOs), women and LGBTI communities to create networks, advocate and lobby key stakeholders.

    ✓ Improved perception and capacity of professionals in the field of justice, health, education and political systems to response teams to gender-based violence and LGBTI discrimination.

  • “Culture at Work Africa: The piblic value of culture forsocial cohesion and urban development in Africa” is aproject co-financed by the European Union andimplemented by the consortium led by Interarts and 7African, European and International partners: ArterialNetwork, Centre for Fine Arts (BOZAR), Culture etDevéloppement, Regional Centre for the Living Artsin Africa (CERAV/Afrique), Culture Fund of theZimbabwe Trust, International Music Council (IMC),Cities Culture Committee and United LocalGovernments (CGLU); together with the followingpartner organisations: African Centre for Cities andthe School of Architecture, Planning and Geomaticsat the University of Cape Town, EconomicCommunity of West African States (ECOWAS), yCentre for Linguistic and Historical Studies throughOral Tradition (CELHTO).

    Culture at Work Africa aims to support local andregional cooperation projects that promoteintercultural dialogue, diversity of cultural expressions.Access to culture and the role that cultural and publicspaces play in promoting social inclusion, especially fordisadvantaged groups.

    Culture at Work Africa was officially presented at theMASA Festival, in Côte d’Ivoire (March 2018), an annualevent organised by the cultural platform fot thepromotion of African Performing Arts, comprisingsome of the project partners, and at BOZAR, Brussels,as part of the EDD 2018.

    Through two calls, Culture at Work Africa offers supportand financing for innovative projects in the field with aview to developing safe, neutral spaces for interculturaldialogue and promoting active citizenship and inter-community relations. The projects will seek sustainableresults and foster multi-stakeholder national and trans-regional cooperation, inclusive societies, cultural diversityand equal dignity for all.

    During implementation of the selected projects, Cultureat Work Africa will carry out a wide range of activities tosupport the grant beneficiaries and develop theirprofessional skills and networking capabilities.

    The activities carried out under the project are publishedon the website www.cultureatworkafrica.net, a Facebookprofile which has 480 followers, and an Instagram ccountwhich has 150 followers (2).

    Outcomes

    ✓ Financing and support of some 50 innovative projects in the field that develop safe, neutral spaces for intercultural dialogue, cooperation and joint creation.

    ✓ Cultural material and events (videos, music recordings exhibitions, performances, etc.) which illustrate tangible cases of intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity. .

    ✓ Sustainably improved activities and capacities of local agents and stakeholders through training and increased exchange opportunities.

    ✓ A structured network of individuals and organisations linked up through an interactive web platform.

    ✓ Establishment of an international awareness-raising campaign aimed at Africans and to a lesser extent Europeans, through a range of media and cultural products.

  • “DECIDES Europe: Preventing Gender-Based violence,the Youth Outlook”, aims to contribute to reducinggender-based violence (GBV) in three Europeanscountries: Denmark, Romania and Spain. The projectwas design under the DECIDES Programmeframework (Cultural Rights to Promote Developmentand Health) created by Interarts and focused onimproving people’s health and well-being throughcultural cooperation for development and by creatingspaces for reflection based on experiences in the field.

    The project is financed by the European Union underthe Rights, Equality and Citizenship programme. It isimplemented by a four-member consortium led byInterarts, with the association Trabe, Spain; theassociation Transcena, Romania; and the museumKvindemuseet i Denmak, Denmark.

    DECIDES Europe contributes to preventing gender-based violence by raising awareness among youngpeople about all its forms, causes and consequences,and providing them with tools to prevent, recogniseand counteract it. The beneficiaries of the project arestudents aged 15-18 years, teachers, counsellors andschool headteachers, parents, and vulnerable groupssuch as youth and young migrants, who live in Spain,Denmark and Romania. The project also encourageslocal authorities and the schools involved to create acommon framework or action protocol to addressgender-based violence in the education system.

    The activities planned on this project will run from 2018and 2019, and include theatre and visual arts workshopsfor young people, theatre pieces put on for students fromother schools, teacher training, lectures for parents fromthe schools involved, as international conference and anexhibition.

    These and other activities will be published on the projectwebsite www.decideseurope.net and on the project’ssocial networks: Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

    Outcomes

    ✓ Improved capacity of stakeholders and relevant professionals to address issues related to sexual and gender-based violence.

    ✓ Increased awareness about the issue of sexual and gender-based violence and changes in attitudes and behaviours both among the general population and between specific groups.

    ✓ Strengthened cooperation and information axchange between the competent European. national, regional and local authorities in relation to sexual and gender-based violence.

  • KNOWLEDGE TRANSFERE

    Interarts runs training informative activities, includingseminars and conferences. We host students fromvarious international higher education institutionsthrough our training programme.

    We provide continuous information on our activitiesand on topics relevant to the cultural sector on ourwebsites and social networks, as we believe thatknowledge must be shared with both specialists andpublic at large.

    Interarts has an institutional website and several otherwebsites for programmes and projects, as well asFacebook, Instagram and Twitter profiles. We also havea YouTube channel(www.youtube.com/user/InterartsVideo), where you cansee videos of the various projects. There are currently175 videos on the channel (3), which have had 32.332views.

    In 2018 Interarts revamped its official website. It now hasmore user-friendly design offering access to generalinformation about the organisation, ongoing andcompleted projects, as well as resources and regularrelevant news in the cultural sector such as our monthlynewsletter, Cyberkaris. Since its launch the website hashad 21.006 (4), visits and more are expected when weimplement the SEO y SEM strategies that are plannedfor 2019.

    We have also set up a new profile on Instagram to shareimages of our activities and to save them as a record onthe cloud with the hashtags:

    Interarts also has an active Facebook page, whichcurrently has 3.747 followers (5).

  • FOMECC PROGRAMME WEBSITE(www.fomecc.org)

    The FOMECC portal (www.fomecc.org), in Spanish,English and French, was launched as part of theprogramme for the Promotion of Cultural and CreativeIndustries (FOMECC). In addition to resources, newsand links on cultural and creative industries, the portalincludes specific sections to offer internatioanl visibilityto different FOMECC projects’ activities, as well as totrained entrepreneurs in a directory for potentialclients. In 2018, the the content, news and resources onthe FOMECC Portal were updated and it received4.094 (6) visits through the year.

    There is a Facebook page and Twitter profile linked tothe FOMECC Portal, which currently have 733 and 407followers (7) respectively.

    The FOMECC Portal includes 2 instruments:FomeccNet, a specialist, restricted network aimed atcultural organisations, training bodies, andprofessionals in the cultural industries; and FomeccBiz(www.fomeccbiz.org) aimed at creative ad culturalentrepreneurs, specially from Spain, Latin America andAfrica, to encourage exchange and collaborationbetween them; promote their work, product and/orservice, and create new business opportunitiesinternationally.

    Lastly, the FOMECC Portal also hosts the LAIC page onculture and urban development topics in Latin America.

    In 2018 we worked on updating the FOMECC Portal andon setting up specialised groups on the professionalnetwork LinkedIn that will being operating in 2019.

    DECIDES PROGRAMME WEBSITE(www.decides.pro)

    The DECIDES Programme site includes informationabout this programme as a way of extending its scopeand shedding light on the exposure of Bolivianindigenous women to HIV. It also provides informationand resources of interest on the link between exercisingcultural rights and building the skills and conditions toexercise sexual and reproductive rights. The main topicsare: sexual and reproductive health, combating violenceagainst women gender equality, etc. Since its launched,the programme website has had 14.729 visits (8).

    Through 2018, relevant information and resourcescontinued to be posted on the website, which received957 visits (9).

    SOUTHMED CV PROJECT WEBSITE(www.smedcv.net)

    The SouthMed CV project website raises the profile offinanced projects and provides information on the mainactivities of the initiatives carried out in the SouthernMediterranean countries.. Some of the content is alsoavailable in Arabic. Since its launch, the web has had128.087 visits (12).

    CULTURALBASE PROJECT WEBSITE (www.culturalbase.eu)

    The CulturalBase website is an Open Data repository ofall of the studies carried out as a part of the project. Thewebsite received 13.463 (11) visits in 2018. It also containsinformation about the project as well as the list ofprofessionals and bodies that make up the CulturalBasenetwork ‘stakeholders’.

    SOUTHMED WiA PROJECT WEBSITE(www.smedwia.eu)

    The SouthMed WiA site disseminates project news anddescribes its main aspects: objectives, calls, projectsfinanced, etc. From its official launch to date, the websitehas had approximately 15.220 visits (13). Information aboutSouthMed WiA is also disseminated through its socialnetworks: Facebook page and Twitter profile, with 2.837and 130 followers respectively (14).

    DECIDES Europe PROJECT WEBSITE(www.decideseurope.net)

    The DECIDES Europe website contains training materialsand tools for the experience to be replicated in otherschools and other countries. The website content will beavailable in 4 languages (Spanish, English, Romanian andDanish). In addition, the project has new profiles onvarious social networks: Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

    EURO-AMERICAN CAMPUS ON CULTURAL COOPERACIÓN WEBSITE (www.campuseuroamericano.org)

    The Euro-American Campus on Cultural Cooperationwebsite provides information about the genesis andconcept of this type of event and on all Campuses held sofar. Since its launch, it has had 40.603 visits (15).

    CULTURE AT WORK AFRICA

    PROJECT WEBSITE(www.cultureatoworkafrica.net)

    The Culture at Work Africa website ensures maximumvisibility for the calls and projects financed and providesupdated information on the actiities carried aout underthe project in English and French. Since its launch, thewebsite has received 49.074 (16) visits, achieving highvisibility in African countries.

    In addition, the project has a Facebook profile with 480+followers and an Instagram profile with 150 followers (17).

    TRAINING

    Interarts incorporates training into all projects, asexplained in the specific paragraphs. In addition, we alsotake part in specialist training courses when invited.

    We have also signed various agreements with highereducation establishments from around the world to hosttrainees, to whom customised programmes are offered.

    CYBERKARIS NEWSLETTER

    Every month Interarts releases Cyberkaris – its digitalnewsletter – in Catalan, English and Spanish. Thenewsletter contains updated information on Interartsprojects and other project calls, as well as resourcesrelevant to cultural operators internationally. In July 2016we began using MailChimp to send out the newsletter.Interarts used this change to clean up its subscriber listsand delete any inactive or incorrect addresses.

    After the update, there were 4.882 subscribers (18).However, when the new General Data ProtectionRegulation came into force on 25 May 2018, subscriptionsto Cyberkaris were renewed again. Since starting the listfrom scratch on that date, 343 people have subscribed(19).

  • The NETCHER project will be launches in 2019,coordinated by the participating entities andconsortium members: National Higher Police School(ENSP) and Université de Technologie de Troyes;Deutsches Archäologisches Institut (DAI); CapitalHigh Tech SARL; Univrsità’ Ca’ Foscari de Venezia andFondazione Ca’ Foscari; Michael Culture and Interarts.The project will be funded by the 8th FrameworkProgramme of the European Union for Research andInnovation - Horizon 2020.

    Drawing on previous experience from similar projectssuch as the CulturalBase project funded by the H2020Programme, Interarts was selected to devise thecommunication strategy for the NETCHER project,which seeks to stimulate the creation of structurednetworks among stakeholders, both researchers andprofessionals, who work to preserve cultural heritageand combat illicit trafficking of cultural goods. Interartswill be responsible for designing the NETCHER, imageand logo, in addition to managing the new website andthe expert communication platform.

  • Interarts has always been an active member ofEuropean networks. We believe that networkingstrengthens our organisation and allows us to take partin current debates on fundamentally significant issuesin the cultural sector, claiming the decisive role ofculture in European governance.

    PARTICIPATION IN OTHER EUROPEAN NETWORKS AND PLATAFORMS

    As a result of its active participation in Europeancultural cooperation processes, Interarts has alwaystaken part in a range of international activities such asconferences and seminars as well as activelycontributing to training programmes and publications,etc.

    Since 2008, Interarts has chaired the ExecutiveCommittee of Culture Action Europe, a platform ofEuropean cultural network and NGOs which aims toensure that the institutions of the European Unionhear the unified and strong voice of artists and culturalprofessionals (www.cultureactioneurope.org).

    An example of this platform’s work is support of theplanned lobbying strategy to have culture included asan explicit goal in the post-2015 Development Agenda.Among other things, the platform played a relevant

    TRIBUTE TO EDUARD MIRALLES

    On November 29, Interarts paid tribute to its President,Eduard Miralles, who left us prematurely in August2018. The ceremony was held at Centro d’Estudis IRecursos Culturals in Barcelona, with the collaborationof the Barcelona Provincial Council, the Ministry ofCulture and Sports, the Spanish Agency forInternational Development Cooperation (AECID), andthe Culture Management Professionals of CataloniaAssociation (APGCC).
