Dick’s Sanitation, Inc. (DSI) is a waste collection and recycling company located in Lakeville, MN. DSI has been in business since 1966. Our vehicles are blue and white and have a DSI or LSI logo on the side of the truck. Our DSI trucks pick up trash and recycling from businesses and the LSI trucks pick up from homes. When DSI/LSI picks up your trash, it is dumped into a compactor on the truck. A compactor is a machine used to squeeze trash to make it smaller. The trash is hauled to a disposal site where it is either burned for energy or placed in a landfill where methane gas is made and used for energy.
DSI also collects stuff that can be recycled like paper and cardboard. Recycle means to convert waste into reusable material. Yard waste and organics are also collected and turned into compost. Compost is a mixture of vegetation and yard waste that makes dirt. By recycling we are reducing our carbon footprint and pollutants in our world!
Three common types of garbage trucks are the frontload, sideload, and rearload. The frontload has forks on the front that can lift large dumpsters. A Dumpster is a large trash bin. The sideload trucks collect trash and recycling from people’s homes with a robotic arm that reaches out and lifts the trash cart. These trucks can lift up to 1,000 carts per day. The rearload truck collects trash from both businesses and homes. The rearload truck is a semi-automated truck that the driver has to exit the truck to hook up the dumpster or cart to a lift to tip it into the truck. Some of these trucks use CNG fuel. CNG is Compressed Natural Gas and is cleaner for the environment.
We employ a safety program called DSI’s 360 Safety program. Our employees are required to wear proper safety gear such as gloves for hand protection, boots to protect their feet, a high visibility vest and hardhats for their heads when they are in the disposal sites to protect them from potential falling objects. These items help ensure safety for our
employees. Other safety equipment we use are cameras for backing up and flashing lights so people can see our trucks. Lastly, our trucks have a broom and shovel to help with any debris that may need to be cleaned up while servicing customers.
Waste and recycling collection is an interesting business. We hope that this information has helped you learn more about our company. We are “The Local Choice” for all your trash and recycling needs.

The average American uses 650 pounds of paper each year – 100 million tons of wood could be saved each year if all that paper was recycled.
A typical family consumes 182 gallons of soda, 29 gallons of juice, 104 gallons of milk, and 26 gallons of bottled water a year. That’s a lot of containers that can all be recycled!
Recycling one ton (about 2,000 pounds) of paper saves 17 trees, two barrels of oil (enough to run the average car for 1,260 miles), 4,100 kilowatts of energy (enough power for the average home for six months), 3.2 cubic yards of land-fill space, and 60 pounds of pollution.
If all of our newspapers were recycled, we could save about 250 million trees each year! If every American recycled just one-tenth of their newspapers, we could save about 25 million trees each year.
More than 20 million Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of aluminum foil. Believe it not, ALL that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it so most it goes in the trash!
Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours. In spite of this, Americans throw away enough aluminum to rebuild our entire commercial fleet of airplanes every three months!
Recycling facts:
Things that should never be added to compost are meat, bones, and fatty food wastes, anything that was chemically treated, diseased plants, weeds that could potentially spread to the area where the compost is used, or human and pet feces.
Straw and wood chips are excellent in a compost pile, as they help it to aerate and add necessary “browns.” Kitchen wastes like egg shells, coffee grounds, and tea bags are high in nitrogen, which the compost needs in order to function properly.
