Hello Mabot Buddies and welcome to Mabot Mania!

Last time you met Skip Car and you learned how to use a Swinging Joint with other Mabot pieces to drop LEGO® bricks off at a construction site. This time you will get a chance to play with Manual Grabber.

Now it’s time to do some exploring! First, you need to explore Manual Grabber’s parts and features.

Examine Manual Grabber’s Clipper very closely. Use the Create Space section to doodle, write and imagine how you think the Clipper opens and closes and think of some things you think the Clipper could help you pick up.

Now that Manual Grabber is put together, it’s time to explore what Manual Grabber can do!

Manual Grabber wants to be a good citizen and help clean up the neighborhood. Manual Grabber needs to pick up and move litter to the recycling bin. Go to the Mabot GO App and get ready to play! Be careful! Manual Grabber is fragile, and you need to be gentle. Remember to connect Manual Grabber to your device!

Once you have Manual Grabber all set up, investigate all the cool things Manual Grabber can do.

When you are done, you will Try to make your own program for Manual Grabber.

Keep in mind the angles that Manual Grabber bends its Swinging Joint and turns its Rotating Joint. Which new trick is your favorite?

Create a new project and name it ‘Grabber’. Use this project so you can program Manual Grabber to pick up and drop the items being recycled.

Now it’s time to program Manual Grabber to pick up and move the litter into the bin.

Mini ChallengeManual Grabber sees a lot of litter on the ground! Can you help Manual Grabber move its Rotating Joint at an appropriate speed and angle so that the Clippers open?

Try It! Try different code blocks until you think you’ve got it!

Mini Challenge Manual Grabber wants to bend down to pick the litter up. Can you help Manual Grabber move its Swinging Joint so that it bends down far enough that the piece of litter is right under the Clipper?

Try It! Move on to the next challenge once you have helped Manual Grabber bend down.

Mini Challenge Manual Grabber has got the piece of litter perfectly in its reach. Can you help Manual Grabber move its Rotating Joint so that the Clipper closes and grabs the piece of litter?

Hint: Think about how you were able to open the Clipper.

Challenge 2

Mini Challenge Now that Manual Grabber has got the piece of litter, it must make sure to dispose of it correctly! Can you help Manual Grabber move forward until it reaches the recycling bin?

Try It! Keep trying until your program does what you want it to do. When you are finished testing out your program, disconnect it from the ‘Start’ code block and drag it to the side. Add to your program and keep trying different code blocks until you think you’ve got it!

Challenge 3

Mini ChallengeThe piece of litter must land in the recycling bin just like a basketball through a hoop! Can you help Manual Grabber move its Swinging Joint so that the piece of litter is above the recycling bin?

Hint: Think about how you made the Swinging Joint bend down before.

Try It! Keep trying until Manual Grabber is right where you want it to be.

Mini ChallengeManual Grabber has to return to the rest of the litter. Can you help Manual Grabber move backward at an appropriate power for however many seconds it takes to get to the next piece of litter?

Hint: Think about how you were able to move Manual Grabber forward.

Try It! Keep trying until your program does what you want it to do. You are almost done!

Challenge 5

Mini ChallengeManual Grabber wants to make sure that all the litter has been cleaned up. Can you help Manual Grabber repeat its entire program until all the litter is moved into the recycling bin?

Keep trying until your program does what you want it to do.

Try It! Connect all the programs you have made to the ‘Start’ code block. This will make one big program. Does Manual Grabber do what you want it to do? If not, try it again!

Now that you have put everything together, put Manual Grabber near the litter and watch Manual Grabber move and drop all of it to the recycling bin!

When you are done, save your program by clicking the ‘Home’ button at the top left corner and press the ‘Save’ button.
