1

2014 was a year of change in the EMRA landscape. The main changes included the new

European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) programming period, the new European

framework, the election of a new European Parliament, the double amendment of the

decree on support for research, development and innovation in Wallonia, amendments to

the General Block Exemption Regulation and the new Community Framework for State

Aid for Research and Development and Innovation.

Change means adaptation and therefore challenges, some of which were already met in

2014 through effective coordination of action within EMRA.

Preparation for the new ERDF programming period, which started within EMRA in 2013,

has led to the submission of 54 projects in 20 portfolios, over half of which involve at least

one intra-EMRA partnership. The results have just come as the report on these activities

goes to press, rewarding the joint effort of the teams of EMRA partners, with over 70% of

projects earmarked for an expected success rate of one third on submission in May 2014.

The transformation of our unincorporated association into a non-profit organisation, made

necessary by the amendment of the decree on support for research, development and

innovation in Wallonia in early 2014, has been called into question by the election of a new

European Parliament. The public authorities have deemed the added value of this change to

be negligible when compared with that of the strong association itself. The important point

is to provide better legibility/visibility of the activity of accredited Research Centres, both

in Wallonia and internationally. They have therefore decided to promote associations,

provided that they make sense and without making it compulsory to formalise them.

This change in approach has not dulled the enthusiasm of EMRA partners to move forward

together in order to be prepared to face the new challenges awaiting them.

The work of research centres is going to have to adapt to the move towards an intelligent

strategy of specialisation that favours each centre's efforts having a more immediate impact

on economic development, an open-mindedness towards the international scene and in a

context of an economy of means. Both the nature of calls for projects (guidance, collective

research, etc.) and their scope are undergoing changes, the European dimension having

become inescapable. Our teams have already been preparing themselves for some time by

stepping up participation in European, transregional and industrial projects (Marshall plan,

C-WALITY, ERA-NET, etc.).

Of course, there is still work to be done, but that would be our motivation even without

major challenges on the horizon!

ALTI2DE

AlTi2De aims at preparing the second

generation of environmentally-compliant

coatings for steel components in the aeronautic

sector, which is the most demanding in terms

of safety and quality management. Thus, the

results are a benchmark for other sectors, such

as automotive, infrastructure and transporting,

provided that the production costs are kept in

mind. Strategically, it is proposed to develop

technical coatings which have the potential to

act as substitutes for both critical coating

processes/materials by achieving the

appropriate levels of wear and corrosion

resistance simultaneously. In order to

accomplish these aims, different coating

processes and materials will be investigated

and combined for optimum results. As

Cadmium substitutes, Al and AlMn based

coatings, produced by thermal spraying,

galvanic deposition, PVD and CVD

techniques, will be developed as more

environmental solution for Cd in order to

provide long lasting corrosion protection to the

underlying steel parts. The substitution of hard

Cr from Cr(VI) electrolytes on steel

components, submitted to wear constraints,

will be developed via thermal spraying of

carbides embedded in a “green” Co-free

matrix, via electrodeposition of Cr from Cr(III)

NEW PROJECTS

electrolytes and via thin film techniques

generating carbides, nitrides and DLC

coatings.

ANTIAD

Corrosion, erosion and caking are wide spread

problems in power plants, caused by

aggressive flue ashes with corrosive

components such as sulfur, chlorine, alkali

based low melting point

salts. The innovative

concept proposed in this

research project combines

structured (gradient of

composition and porosity) thermal sprayed

coatings with a covering sol-gel layer to be

used in energy power plants. NiCr- and FeCr-

alloys based thermal sprayed coatings

including targeted hard materials like Cr-

carbides will provide a suitable corrosion and

erosion protection whereas the thin sol-gel

layer combined with the structure of thermal

sprayed coatings will reduce the sticking

ability of aggressive liquid or liquid/solid flue

ashes.

Page 11: ACTIVITIES REPORT 2014 ACTIVITIES REPORT EMRA 2014- version anglaise VF… · Activities Report EMRA - 2014 5 POLYCHANVRE Cross-border development of polymer-hemp composite materials

Activities Report EMRA - 2014

7

The combination of porous and rough thermal

spray layer with a composite sol gel/particles

top layer will result in the formation of a

bimodal roughness and an anti-adhesive lotus

effect : the roughness at a micrometer range

will avoid sticking of large particles and a

submicron roughness to avoid sticking of

fines. Furthermore erosion at these coatings

will not lead to a loss of function. Indeed a

rather thick interphase will be created as the

sol gel will penetrate the thermal sprayed

layer porosity. This will provide a kind of

reservoir which will allow maintaining the

anti-adhesive properties despite erosion.

BIOCOAT

Due to the climate change debate and the

awareness of the finite nature of fossil fuels,

organic polymer materials based on fossil

fuels are intended to be increasingly

substituted by polymers based on renewable

resources.

The goal

of this

project is

to check

out, in which field of coating application

which biopolymers could substitute

conventional polymers considering cost-

effectiveness. Since coatings for interior

application (e.g. wall paints) do not have to

correspond to the highest performance level,

the probability to meet economic as well as

functional demands by substituting the

polymer basis is best for such paints. Thus

this project focuses on the development of

some cost-effective biopolymer matrices,

which will be used for formulating coatings

for different interior applications. These

coatings will be characterized and optimized

regarding their use-oriented demands

considering cost-effectiveness. The project

intends to generate prototypical coatings by

two work processes. One process aims at the

biopolymer material itself, its selection and

its modification. The latter implies

potentially necessary purifications or

fractionations as well as reactions with other

reasonably priced compounds. This could

result in an applicable biopolymer material

meeting the demands of interior coating

matrices regarding mechanical and chemical

stability, adhesion and compatibility with

pigments and additives to be introduced.

BLACK-COATING

In response to ESA ITT N° AO7739, CRP-

Gabriel Lippmann, Materia Nova and Thales

Alenia Space submitted to ESA a joined

proposal regarding the developpement of

innovative

materials

for super-

black low-

weigth/cost baffles. The main

EMRA knowledge to the development of the

project are : Formulation of sol-gel coatings

(water or solvent based) for different

applications, background related with the

functionalization and dispersion of

nanoparticles, formulation of composite sol gel

coatings through the incorporation of

nanoparticles into a sol-gel matrix for different

applications (depending on the type of

nanoparticles), techniques related to surface

structuration for different applications as

photonic surfaces, adhesives, easy-to-clean or

self-cleaning surfaces, optical strategy for

developing of Black and Super-Black coating.

HYLIFE

Storage and electrochemical energy restitution

is one of best management routes of energy

resources. Indeed, in a context of rarefaction of

fossil fuels and of renewable energy

development, the ability to store electrical

energy and return it with strong returns appears

as a long-term solution to sustainable

development. Among all the types of existing

cells, solid polymer electrolyte cells (Proton

Exchange Membrane, or PEM) hydrogen / air

are one of the most versatile, and therefore

suitable for both mobile and stationary

applications. The project is based on previous

results obtained in the INNOPEM project.

HYLIFE project will adress all elements of the

fuel cell. Thus, regarding the catalyst, the

focus will be on changing the chemistry /

surface crystallinity of the materials and

manufacturing core-shell bimetallic catalysts

(Co-Pt, basically). Regarding membranes,

polystyrene membranes sulfonated highly

fluorinated, may have a chemical resistance

superior to existing materials. This will be

optimized and the deposition method adapted.

Finally, the bipolar plates coated steel, research

leave the results with PVD coatings (type

CrxN) whose resistance to deformation and

corrosion after drawing will be a comparison

reference. The complementary approach,

concerns the steel filing polymeric films

(possibly doped conductive nanoparticles) by

electro-polymerization. The literature has

shown that such an approach is feasible, even

if the films deposited by this approach are not

yet perfect.

SELECTPERM

At present, micro- and nano-perforated plastic

films, as well as high-barrier materials, are

used to package foodstuffs. None of these

materials is optimised for foodstuffs that need

to breathe, such as vegetables, fruit and some

cheeses. Perforated materials do not allow for

selectivity or control of gas exchange, while

the modified atmosphere used with high-

barrier materials does not account for the

breathability of foodstuffs, which are therefore

at risk of anoxia. SELECTPERM's goal is to

develop packaging with selective O2/CO2

permeability

for the

packaging of

fresh products.

The materials

used in the

project will be biosourced and/or recyclable

materials, with a view to developing durable

packaging materials: paper coated with

selectively permeable film and materials made

entirely from polymers (multilayer and

polymer blend).

NEW PROJECTS

CARACEC

The aim of this project is to develop a

procedure allowing a simple, effective and

inexpensive characterization of the clay

fraction of the grounds and sedimentary rocks

whatever the content and the nature of the clay.

A characterization of clay materials is essential

both in civil engineering, in the ceramic

industry and also in the environmental field.

The

qualitative

and

quantitative

characteriz

ation of

clays helps

to understand and therefore to provide essential

properties such as the potential of

shrinkage/swelling, the plasticity and the

impermeability. This project targets an easy

methodology available for a large number of

laboratories adapted to the great variability of

the grounds and sediments and whose results

would be precise and relevant. Our study will

be based on the cation exchange capacity

(CEC), a technique reliable with the

mineralogical composition and some important

properties like the shrinkage/swelling and

plasticity of clays according to their humidity

amount.

In addition to the variability of soils that have

to be characterized, the challenge of

CARACEC lies in the difficulty of combining

the various procedure steps without including

any modifications of the CEC by the batch

sampling and the sample pretreatments.

MOULFRIT

Traditionally, processes used to manufacture

ceramic molds for metal casting require several

and long stages. These processes are therefore

unadapted or too expensive for small series or

prototyping. This can be a limitation for users,

such as SMEs or development

units, bound to use only mechanical machining

in this field.

Additive manufacturing of ceramics enables

faster (by the reduction of intermediate stages)

but also more complex mold production. This

technology could be a real benefit for the

ceramic mold production as it gives the

possibility to control precisely the mold shape

in order to ensure a good mechanical support

and to manage thermal tranfers which, if

uncontrolled, might generate residual defects

in the casting parts.

The purpose of this project is to get the best

from both processes - metal casting (large

choice of casting alloys, saving of material and

machining) and additive manufacturing of

ceramics (near-net shaping of complex parts,

faster than traditional machining) - leading to a

positive impact for the environment by saving

energy and raw materials.

SHAPESPS

The SPS technology knows an increasing

interest in recent years. It provides an ultra-fast

consolidation of ceramic and / or metallic

powders by combining pressure and heat

treatment by Joule effect (high intensity pulsed

current passing through die and punches). The

rapidity of the process (average cycle time of

30 min) leads, in most cases, to a maintain of

a fine microstructure for a bulk density close

to the theoretical

density of the

materials and to a

reduction of the

power consumed

per unit of

produced material, in the order of 60-75%.

More powerful equipments with an improved

productivity and offering hybrid heating modes

are now available to sinter large parts but with

relatively simple shapes, limiting the use of

this disruptive technology in an industrial

environment.

Page 16: ACTIVITIES REPORT 2014 ACTIVITIES REPORT EMRA 2014- version anglaise VF… · Activities Report EMRA - 2014 5 POLYCHANVRE Cross-border development of polymer-hemp composite materials

Activities Report EMRA - 2014

12

The SHAPESPS project aims at offering a

viable solution for the consolidation by Spark

Plasma Sintering of new products (ceramics or

materials from the powder metallurgy)

presenting complex shapes. The proposed

solution to be developed will allow benefiting

from the advantages of this technology without

any modification of the SPS equipment. The

deliverable of the project will be guidelines

to the attention of industries allowing a proper

selection of the raw materials, the

determination of the optimal design for green

parts and the assessment of the acceptable

degree of complexity in order to obtain, after

sintering, an object with the desired

dimensions for types of materials that can

hardly be sintered in another way than by SPS.

Otherwise, a dedicated software will also be

developed to optimize the preparation of

complex shapes for sintering.

RESISTRACT

A good knowledge of mechanical properties of

refractory materials is necessary to ensure the

safety and sustainability of systems submitted

to severe and multiple conditions. Currently,

the mechanical behavior of these materials is

characterized by standardized tests of

compression and bending. The weakness of

this approach is the determination of the tensile

strength through bending tests. During such a

test, the stress field is non uniform in the

material, so not

really

representative of

that present in a

pure tensile test.

However, the

material

destruction is

achieved when

this material is

subjected to a

higher stress than its tensile strength. The

bending test is widely used because its

implementation is easier than those of a pure

tensile test which requires a perfect alignment

of all setting load line and a machining of the

sample with particular design. Concerning the

splitting test, already standardized in the civil

engineering sector, is widely used to quantify

the tensile strength of concretes in this field.

This test is easy to implement and enables a

more reliable determination of the tensile

strength than bending tests. Therefore this test

method could usefully complement the

standard framework dedicated to refractory

materials. The goal of this pre-standardized

project is to establish a robust protocol of

splitting test applicable to refractories. The

manufacturers could improve their data sheets

on mechanical resistances and installers / users

could enhance their choice criteria for one

material compared to another one in terms of

mechanical strength.

PHOEBUS

The transformation of organic ultimate waste

(plastics, rubbers, foams , etc.) into synthetic

fuels is an area of growing interest in the

continuous search for alternative energy

solutions. The development of this new

business is supported by the creation of

industrial production units. The current quality

of those synthetic fuels only allows their

dilution with crude oil to supply the

petrochemical industry. Based on the results

generated by the Phoenix project (Marshall

Plan), the Phoebus project targets the

production of higher quality fuels through an

integrated process including a purification step

(patented innovation). The improved fuels

quality will make them appropriate to be

directly injected into co-generation engines

specifically modified to optimize the energy

consumption (higher net electrical efficiency

of about 45%) and to minimize the

environmental impact (low emissions). This

Phoebus project was submitted to Mecatech

competitiveness pole by Comet Traitements

SA and Coretec engineering SA in partnership

with Certech and ULB.

NEW PROJECTS

CAPTINDOOR

The aim of the project is the VOCs detection –

particularly formaldehyde and acetaldehyde –

in order to quantify indoor air quality. In this

context, the partners will elaborate micro-

sensors for measuring those pollutants, which

could help to make arrangements in order to

limit passive exposure (choice of building

materials) or active exposure (ventilation,

filtration systems installation). The sensor

should

give both

an

optical

and

electrical

response.

The

transduction method will be based on using a

periodic array of out-of-plane metallic

microcantilevers. This method is inspired from

the microblind® system developed by the

National Research Council of Canada and used

for producing opaque or transparent windows

at will. The micro-beams are covered by a

sensible coating whose volume or weight can

be changed by gases adsorption or absorption:

their curvature can be therefore modified and

by the same, their spacing from the substrate.

FILTRA-N

Wastewater treatment companies are

increasingly often choosing cleaning

technologie called “extensive” (natural

treatments without mechanical intervention)

instead of “intensive” technologies. The

choice of these «extensive» technologies

allows reducing investment and operating

costs. Moreover, it is robust and easy to

operate technologies.

Vertical and horizontal flow reed bed filters

occupy an important position in the market for

"extensive" processes. The vertical flow reed

bed filter is singularly known for nitrification

performance while the horizontal flow filter is

distinguished by its ability to denitrificate.

Studies regarding combination of these two

filters (such as serial connection with/without

internal recirculation, etc.) have been

conducted.

Page 19: ACTIVITIES REPORT 2014 ACTIVITIES REPORT EMRA 2014- version anglaise VF… · Activities Report EMRA - 2014 5 POLYCHANVRE Cross-border development of polymer-hemp composite materials

Activities Report EMRA - 2014

15

The FILTRA-N project’s goals are to design

and validate a filter consisting of a

superposition of a vertical flow reed bed filter

above a horizontal flow filter (reducing the

floor space required in comparison to other

configurations) and having good purification

performances (in accordance with directive

91/271 to <10 000 per capita).

WATERPOP

The project targets the improvement of the

water quality during or at the end of

purification treatments, by the implementation

of an advanced oxidation process. It is part of

an environmental and public health policy for

the abatement of persistent organic

micropollutants having a known "endocrine

disrupters" effect. The process is based on the

mineralization of traces of organic

micropollutants such as pesticides

(groundwater) or active pharmaceutical

ingredients (surface water) and uses the

photocatalytic properties of TiO2 (anatase).

This approach should allow the degradation of

(a)polar molecules resistant to conventional

wastewater treatments with activated carbon

for example, or requiring the use of

nanofiltration, expensive and energy intensive.

EMRA assists companies in developing and promoting technological innovation. Concrete solutions, in-depth assistance and technical advice are provided by teams with recognised skills and knowledge. Technological platforms are also made available to companies.

The EMRA teams are the first points of contact for

firms wishing to improve their processes or develop

new products. Business assistance projects include

feasibility studies, support and collaboration on

research projects, the transfer of technologies or new

processes, help with writing up new specifications etc.

In 2014, a patent for a technology for laser machining

unfired ceramics (PCT/EP2012/060261) was

transferred to operations in Wallonia.

The provided services consist of technological audit of problems associated with processes or

products, and guidance on obtaining technological skills. This guidance is supported by technology

forecasting, which enables experts to stay permanently up to date on the scientific and technical

progress made within their fields which present a high potential for industrial innovation.

The working group specifically formed to help businesses is tasked with promoting

collaboration synergies. Joint participation in certain trade shows and joint meetings with

manufacturers have made it possible to offer a broader range of resources and services in EMRA's

three areas of expertise.

Since 2010, 1076 businesses have received support, including 138 from at least two EMRA

partner centres. Half of these businesses are very small enterprises or SMEs. One hundred and forty-

one new businesses received support with their innovation process in 2014.

Distribution of requests:

47 % Materials 19 % Process

34 % Environment

In 2014, 20 business guidance and recognition projects were supported by public funds

(guidance funded by the Walloon Region, FPS Economy of Belgium and ERDF). These projects cover

EMRA’s three areas of activity (Materials, Processes and the Environment).
