The FuTure red TOrnadO InITIaTIve - STePPIng uP TO The PLaTe TOgeTher! ///

lancaster rec, saint Joseph Catholic Cluband salsa baseball organizations are joiningforces to get more children outside and active.

Coming together, we have created lancaster baseball.our mission is to develop and enhance the skills, mental

discipline, character and self-confidence of youth

through the sport of baseball.

Play starts at ages 5 and 6 with coed tee ball, and

progresses to coed rookie ball for ages 7 and 8, and

lancaster County youth baseball league for ages

9 to 14. teams practice and play at davey arnold,

lancaster Community Park, st. Joe Catholic Club

and other school district of lancaster ball fields.

the Millersville university baseball coaching staff trains

all volunteer coaches to ensure boys and girls learn the

proper skills, stay safe on the field, and have fun. the

McCaskey high school coaching staff conducts clinics

and skill assessments so that children are placed on

teams where they will have the best opportunity for

success. Children of all skill levels are encouraged to

play. lancaster baseball was formed so that all children

are challenged when they step up to the plate but

not discouraged. all children are prepared to play and

are positioned for wins and losses in their season.

lancaster baseball is the only baseball club available

in the school district of lancaster. to participate in

lancaster baseball, children must live within the school

district of lancaster boundaries, including homeschooled

children, or attend lancaster Country day school.

lancaster baseball is a concentrated effort to

improve the experience of youth baseball in

the City of lancaster and lancaster township

through the Future red tornado initiative.

We need your help to get children off the sidelines and in the game!

lancaster rec is asking

you to consider making a gift to the Future red

tornado initiative to keep these programs growing.

What is the Future red tornado initiative?

the Future red tornado initiative (Frti) is a focused

initiative, powered by the lancaster recreation

Commission, to allow all children the opportunity to

play youth sports.

how will lancaster rec accomplish the goal to double the number of youth participating in sports in lancaster City/township in the next five years?

lancaster rec intends to accomplish its goal in three

main ways:

1. Collaborate with community organizations to provide

programming to more children than ever before.

2. train coaches and staff so children have a great

experience in youth sports programs.

3. raise funding for the youth sports scholarship

program so more children can have access to

affordable and even free programming.

4 / Register at LancasterRec.org

When did this initiative begin, how much has been invested so far and how many children have been served?

the Future red tornado initiative officially began in

april 2015 when lancaster rec signed a Memorandum

of understanding with the school district of lancaster.

since then, lancaster rec has invested more than

$75,000 and more than 3,000 children have participated

in sports programming through lancaster rec

programs or those of our community partners.

hOw Can I heLP?

• a gift of $50 can subsidize dance lessons so a little

girl can be the ballerina she’s always wanted to be.

• a gift of $75 can provide a free swimming lesson

to a little boy. this skill could save his life.

• a gift of $100 means 15 more children can play in

our flag football league, where boys and girls learn

discipline, gain confidence and foster pride in their

community and themselves.

Dear Mom,

Thank you for sending me to Camp Optimist! It’s my favorite place!

Every day we go to the pool. and I love to swim! I’ve made so many friends. This week, I learned to sing three new songs around the camp fire. Yesterday, we built a fort and made slop soup! I’m growing tomatoes in the garden next to the barn. I can’t wait to go back to camp tomorrow.

Love, Marisol

tucked away in an old barn in Conestoga Pines Park off of Pitney road is one of lancaster’s best kept secrets.

it’s a place where long summer days are spent playing in the woods, swimming, making crafts and singing camp

songs. it’s a throwback to simpler times and the lazy days of summer.

Camp optimist, or “Camp o” as it’s nicknamed, has been held every

summer since 1957. today’s Camp o continues the traditions it was

founded on – the freedom to play and just be a kid, the opportunity to

experience nature and a unique setting to make lasting friendships.

home base for Camp o is a large, two-story barn. Conestoga Pines Park

has open fields for play and woods that the kids explore every day.

Children attend field trips to local attractions like Knoebel’s

amusement Park, lake tobias Wildlife Park, refreshing

Mountain resort Zip lining adventures and many more! Weekly

themes like under the big top, Pay it Forward and dragons,

amphibians & reptiles make camp exciting and fun.

this one-of-a-kind adventure camp will inspire a lifetime of memories

for your camper! see page 6 for dates and prices.
