Main Objectives IEEEBS-GRSSC would emphasize on bringing like-minded members of IEEE, who have interest in the

research areas related to remote sensing and geoscience, under one umbrella to deal with the

activities that include:

1) to discuss the research activities related to remote sensing and geosciences to explore potential

cross fertilization by organizing meetings, conferences, seminars and courses under IEEEBS-

GRSSC

2) to arrange lectures time to time by IEEE GRSS Distinguished Lecturers

3) to share the research results that appeared in Remote Sensing Journals among members,

4) to attract more IEEE members to join GRSS

5) to identify and encourage qualified IEEE GRSS members belonging to IEEE Bangalore section to

have elevation in their' membership grades

6) to help academia in India in designing course curricula on remote sensing and geosciences

7) to report annually the successes and challenges of the IEEE-BSGRSSC to the society and to IEEE

GRS-Magazine

8) to help young researchers and PhD scholars, dealing with research related to remote sensing and

geoscience in publishing their research results in IEEE GRSS flagship journals

Recent Chapter Activities The first meeting of this new chapter was held on 9th February 2013 at the Systems Science and

Informatics Unit (SSIU), Indian Statistical Institute-Bangalore Centre.

During 2013, we organized following activities under the "Bangalore Section IEEE Geoscience and

Remote Sensing Society Chapter".

Workshop on "Mathematical Morphology and Pattern Recognition: Theory and Applications" during

26-28 March 2013. The details of this three-day workshop appeared in IEEE Geoscience and Remote

Sensing Magazine (v. 1, no. 2, p. 72-73, June 2013, DOI: 10.1109/MGRS.2013.2260918).

This chapter has also organized jointly with Amrita School of Engineering, Bangalore a Workshop on

"Image Pattern Analysis and Applications" during 9-10 November 2013.

Bangalore Section IEEE GRSS Chapter webpage with proper time-to-time updates has been

maintained. This webpage is at: http://sites.ieee.org/bangalore-grss/

During 2012-13, we have organized four meetings to discuss and plan the activities, while

participating a couple of Bangalore Section IEEE Chapter Chairs' Conclaves, and also by making

presentation about the chapter activities during the AGM-IEEE Bangalore Section.

As a panel member, Chair of the Bangalore Section IEEE GRSS Chapter helped the 'IEEE Senior

Member Application Review Process' held on 29 March 2013.

Immediate Future Chapter Activity Plans for 2014 •This chapter would like to organize IEEE Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Lorenzo

Bruzzone is being organized during January 2014. We are awaiting final confirmation of

date for this DL lecture at Bangalore by Prof. Lorenzo Bruzzone, who in principle agreed

to deliver DL in Bangalore.

•During May- June 2014, we are planning to organize a two-week long Summer School on

"Mathematical Morphology in Geosciences". For this, we are also approaching additional

funding from the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

•We continue organize meetings among Bangalore Section IEEE GRSS members to plan (i) increasing membership

(ii) bidding for IGARSS 2019 in India,

(iii) inviting at least three IEEE Fellows from other parts of India to deliver talks,

(iv) attracting more scientists working in ISRO, SAC, LRDE to join IEEE GRSS,

(v) to share the research results that appeared in Remote Sensing Journals among members

(vi) encouraging researchers to publish their' best results in IEEE GRSS publications such

as IEEE TGRS, IEEE GRSL, IEEE JSTARS,

(vii) to identify and encourage qualified IEEE GRSS members belonging to IEEE Bangalore

section to have elevation in their' membership grades,

(viii) to report annually the activities of this chapter to the society and to IEEE GRSS

Magazine,

(ix) to motivate and provide incentives in the form of small gifts to volunteers who are

proactive in helping fulfilling above mentioned activities, and to those members

publishing in IEEE GRSS flagship journals.

Action Plan to Increase the Membership for IEEE GRSS Bangalore Section IEEE GRSS Chapter has been inviting several final year BTech students to do their one-month long internship

in the areas related to Remote Sensing and Geosciences with some of its members who are academics. This is being done to

create interest among them to join GRSS as student members. With some fund available from IEEE GRSS for the year 2014, we

can expect more interns who would eventually join GRSS as student members.

•GRSS Membership Number in India Increases with Increasing Number of Indian Researchers

Targeting Publications in IEEE GRSS Periodicals.

•Challenge: How to see that more Indian researchers consider IEEE GRSS Periodicals for publishing

their’ good research outputs?

•To address the above challenge, besides technical events planned for the year 2014, we are also

planning to organize following two One-Day Workshops: 1) Workshop on writing papers for IEEE GRSS Technical Periodicals: To create awareness about the

importance and impacts on publishing in IEEE GRSS Flagship Journals among Engineering students,

PhD Scholars, Young Scientists and Researchers and Faculty Members. As such there is no significant

number of publications from Indian Researchers in IEEE TGRS, IEEE GRSL, IEEE JSTARS. By creating

awareness, we are of the view the authorship number would increase and in turn the IEEE GRSS

membership number. We have already made attempts in this line during 2012-13. In India, many

youngsters who have been doing cutting edge research related to Remote Sensing and Geoscience

lacking skills to convert those results to the style and standard required to publish them in IEEE GRSS

journals. We would like to conduct a One-Day workshop to highlight the writing and presentation

standards required to publish the results in GRSS journals.

2) Workshop to Encourage More India Scientists to Pursue PhD studies: Many researchers at ISRO, NRSC,

SAC, DRDO--who have done significant work related to Remote Sensing and Geosciences--have now

been very keen in pursuing PhD studies for professional growth. We would like to conduct a One-Day

workshop to inform them about the PhD opportunities available on Part-Time External Mode. We have

already seen some success in getting those scientists, with no PhD degrees, registering for PhD

programs. Such a move would also impact the GRSS membership number.

An Appeal to IEEE GRSS AdCom

To make GRSS Chapters of India more visible, we appeal to GRSS

AdCom to consider including Indian Academics/Scientists/Researchers

into Editorial Boards of the following Four GRSS Publications:

IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters

IEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations

and Remote Sensing

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine

Such an act would make Indian Chapters more visible across the

world, and the direct impact would be to attract more authors and

members from Indian subcontinent for the IEEE GRSS.
