HSM Adoption Success: Huck Was Adopted!

H uck is our most recent success story. Huck was originally brought to our shelter from Texas due to the past hurricane. In Texas, Huck was considered

a longterm resident at their shelter. He was brought to our shelter in April in hopes a new set of eyes would help find him a forever home. After spending a few short months at our shelter Huck was showing major improvements with volunteers. He was the sweetheart of the shelter, but tended to be a tad bit fearful. After a few short months, Huck was adopted. The adopter spent two weeks getting to know him. She allowed Huck to gain her trust. She would spend a short period of time with him each day at the shelter taking him for walks and having playtime. Towards the end of the two weeks, our shelter made a home visit to introduce Huck to his new home. This process allowed for the best outcome for Huck and luckily his adopter was very patient and continues to show patience throughout his transition. We’re incredibly happy that Huck has finally found his forever home in Michigan.

Meet Our New Animal Care Specialist

Haliegh (pictured on left)

What gets you out of bed in the morning? The animals here at the shelter have a huge impact on my life and I get out of bed each morning for every one of those little heartbeats.

How would you describe your day job?A dream I’ve had since I’ve been a little girl. I’ve always wanted to work with horses.

What is your biggest achievement to date- personal or professional? The horses when I first started were given a completely new life. Starr had been here for years. She was never socialized, never groomed, hadn’t had her teeth filled and even only allowed for a few staff members to come near her. After a few months of working with her, it was a complete turn around—she began to excel. Although she is no longer with us, she will forever hold a place in my heart. It was from that moment on that I knew this job was for me.

What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?My morning starts with the smell of alfalfa and the sound of shuffling hooves of impatient farm animals waiting for breakfast. It’s not just mucking stalls, feeding, grooming and turnout. Our animals require special diets and care. I monitor and spend quality time with each animal to ensure the best quality of life for each one of them. Currently, we’re working on barn renovations. We’ve completed putting rubber mats and heated water troughs in the stalls. We’re looking forward to more barn updates to come.

What three words would you use to describe your role?Compassionate Equine Advocate.

What is on your wish list for the next five years here?I would love to have all shelter staff involved in the barn animals’ enrichment. I would also love to help others have share the same passion and mission. Our goal has always been to help and improve as many lives as possible and if we have the opportunity to help more, we take it.

What is your motto or personal mantra?Be rad, not sad.

Does the shelter have any new barn animals?Recently, we have taken in two new horses, Willow and Basha. Both of them came in underweight and needed extra attention. Willow has gained a healthy amount of weight since her stay here and is continuing to succeed. Basha is still in the early stages of recovery, but in the next few months she will be looking and feeling much better.

4 ACTION FOR ANIMALS

1 Do not let your indoor pet(s) outside for long periods of time. Shorthaired breeds like Doberman’s, Chihuahuas, Terriers etc., may need coats or sweaters. Every pet is at risk of frostbite. Most common areas are ear tips, feet and tips of tails.

2 Outdoor pet(s) should be brought inside the house or have access to a heated garage when the weather gets severely cold. If that’s not possible make sure the doghouse is well built, insulated, slanted roof with an elevated floor. Dry straw is excellent bedding material. Doors should be covered with a flap to prevent drafts from the wind. The door should not face the North. Southeast is the best. The size of the doghouse is very important. A house that is too large for your dog will not keep him warm. He needs a house that he can stand up in, turn around and lay down. His body heat will help keep him warm along with the bedding etc.

3 Outside dogs need more calories in the winter so they can build up fat, which acts as insulation. He needs 2-3 times more calories. Check the dog food bag to increase his food or contact your local vet for more information.

4 Fresh water must be provided several times a day. Pet stores do sell heated dog bowls.

5 Check your pets feet for slush or salt that may stay in their pads and cause irritation.

6 Cats should be kept indoors or in a heated garage that has built in hutches or in a well kept used barn. Cats will seek heat and sometimes sleep in the motor of your car. Be aware of paw prints on your car hood. It’s possible that there’s a cat getting warm by your engine. Tap on the hood or honk your horn to scare the cat away.

7 By using common sense in the cold months our pets will be safe. Remember that Michigan Law requires proper shelter for your pet(s) 24 hour per day for the weather, which includes sun, heat, rain, snow, wind, etc.

8 Free bags of straw are available for your pet’s dog house during the months of October through March. Straw may be picked up at our shelter during business hours of 10am to 4pm Monday through Saturday.

Seasonal ReminderWith the holidays quickly approaching be cautious of your Christmas plants, especially Poinsettia & Mistletoe which can be very harmful and deadly to your pet.

Winterize Your Pet!Though beautiful, winters in Michigan can be deadly for animals. There are steps that can be taken to ensure your dog or cat enjoys a fun and safe winter season.

A Day in the Life of a Shelter Volunteer

Meet Joe “After retiring, I was in search of a volunteer opportunity. Since I’m a dog lover, I researched several rescue organizations and the Humane Society of Macomb was one of them. After visiting the shelter, I participated in volunteer orientation and after that I felt that it was the best fit for me. It’s been very rewarding being able to play an important part in the dogs lives. I’ve worked with the dogs in order for them to become more sociable and thus more adoptable. I have been very impressed with the staff when it comes to the compassion and love they have for all the animals. I was even nominated for Volunteer of the Month back in May. I can honestly say I look forward to continuing my volunteer service with the animals and staff here at the Humane Society of Macomb.“

The Humane Society of Macomb established their volunteer program at the beginning of 2017 with just 10 volunteers. Would you have guessed the program has been around for less then 2 years? Since then our program has grown, not only in people generously giving their time, but the programs we are offering for people to get involved. While we have added new opportunities as we continue to grow, our ultimate goal is to be able to have programs for individuals of all ages, levels, and abilities. In the near future, we’re hoping to continue to grow our volunteer program exceeding 400 volunteers. If you are interested in participating in our volunteer program you can email our volunteer coordinator at [email protected] to get started today.

Chat With the Vet

T he Humane Society of Macomb recently had a litter of kittens that tested positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). FIV is a virus

that attacks the immune system of the infected cat. It is spread through wounds or from the mother cat to her kittens. Cats with FIV are more likely to get ill, but can live long, healthy, happy lives with the proper care. Infected cats should be kept indoors, vaccinated according to the veterinarian’s recommendation, fed nutritionally complete and balanced diets, and uncooked or raw diets should be avoided. FIV positive cats should go in for regular veterinary checkups and any change in their health should be addressed with the veterinarian. It is recommended that cats with FIV are the only cat in the household or only brought into a household with other FIV positive cats.

Luah, Kali, Chata, Morgan and Captain have flourished with the wonderful care provided by both the shelter and veterinary staff. They are expected to continue to thrive with the love and care from their adoptive families.

If you are interested in adopting a special needs animal, visit or contact The Humane Society of Macomb and our Adoption Specialists will help to match you with the perfect furry family member.
