Our 2018 Funday was a huge success, magnificent weather allowed students and staff to enjoy the variety of activities and all the delicious food. Our SRC team, led by Mardi Ryan, did a power of work behind the scenes organising and coordinating the event, we congratulate them on their work and thank them for their efforts. Mrs Ruth Borger contributed many, many hours of work in ensuring the day ran smoothly for all to enjoy, we cannot thank Mrs Borger enough for the work she put in to the day. We thank all our families who contributed baked goods and sauces for our cake stall, the display of food was outstanding. Our afternoon concluded with entertainment from our Year 12 students, it was a delightful way to finish a very “Fun Day”. The Rochester Secondary College community should be very proud of themselves, the success of the day was a true credit to all who attended. We received our NAPLAN results this month and overall the results are good. The data shows that student growth from Year 7 2016 to Year 9 2018 is above state average in Writing, Reading, Spelling and Grammar and Punctuation. This is an excellent indication that when students enrol at Rochester Secondary College it is expected they show substantial growth in their learning. The improvement in learning is also evident by the fact that 100% of Year 9 students are above the Min-imum National Standard for Reading and 98% of Year 9 are above for Numeracy. There is still considerable work to be done to continue with our improvement cycle but these results are encouraging that the focussed work is improving student out-comes. Individual NAPLAN results have been sent out to families. Congratulations to Matt Blow and James Shaw who were awarded the Australian Defence Force Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award at our whole school as-sembly. Both these boys regularly demonstrate leadership, courage, problem solv-ing, are resourceful and contribute to the wider community. Matt and James are excellent ambassadors for Rochester Secondary College. With only one week left of Term 3 our Year 12 students are working towards their exams and completing their final SACTs. This can be an incredibly stressful time for families and students, and we encourage parents and students to speak with their teachers to ensure they are managing the extra pressures that come with this time of year. Many of our teachers are offering additional study sessions to focus on revision and study techniques, please encourage your student to ask for help if they need it. It is important that our students support one another and continue to work hard towards the exams. I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Rochester Secondary College and the Rochester community for welcoming me during Term 3. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the College, and I have really enjoyed getting to know the students. The staff at the College have been incredibly supportive and open to new ideas and I thank them for their ongoing commitment to the students and their hard work towards improving students’ outcomes both academically and with their wellbe-ing. FUNDAY 2018
O n a beautiful sunny day last Friday, Rochester Secondary College held its biennial Funday. Every form group ran at least one activity, with the help of their tireless form teach-
ers. In addition there were two inflatable activities from The Zone, the Lions’ fairy floss machine, Leanne Hooper's Spray Tattoos and Mr Brooks coffee van.
Many thanks to Susan Coghill, Sharon Williams and Bruce Macague for cooking a delicious BBQ. Students from both St Joseph’s and the primary school came for lunch and a look around. This year also saw an excellent participation and assistance rate from the Year 12 group, a highlight being the talent quest at the end of the day.
It was wonderful to see parents, grandparents and friends visit the school – we even had a pet snake come for a look around! From Dev-onshire tea to pizza and hot dogs, there was plenty to eat. Face painting and the Haunted House were hits with children of all ages. As usual all our students enjoyed a break from classroom routine, but it was also really pleasing to see groups and individuals teaming up to make the day a success. Plenty of hard workers start their jour-ney to student leadership at Funday.
The SRC executive should feel very proud of their efforts. The College thanks you – Mardi Ryan, Jessica Horkings, Lachlan Wallace, Brock Wright, Ella Haisman, Dimity Pearson, Sarah Trewick and Madesyn Honey. Well done to you all!

empowerme Training
O n Monday 3 September, two carloads of very nervous Year 10 students set out for Bendigo to take part in em-powerme!, a special self development workshop run at
Girton College by trainers from the Portsea and Lord Somers camps program.
While the participants were taken out of their ‘comfort zone’ by some of the activities (Nash Hocking playing the didgeridoo in front of a hundred or so strangers is one example) it was a valua-ble opportunity to practice their communication skills, away from their usual circle of friends.
Being willing to try new things is an advantage for your whole life. It is also a vitally important challenge for all learners, so the fol-lowing ‘adventurous few’ should be very proud of themselves: Shanae Gibson, Ella Roulston, Ben Atley, Charlie Ryan, Jack Oogjes, Ella McPhee, Nash Hocking and Emma Palmer.
Many thanks to Cathy Ryan for driving students to and from the activity.

Year 11 Health & Human Development Class
T he Year 11 Health and Human Development class were lucky
enough to have some special visitors come in to help learn
about child development.
Mrs Anita White kindly brought in her two gorgeous boys, Ted and
Paddy. The boys allowed the students the opportunity to have a clos-
er look into the infancy and childhood stages of development, with
Ted being 18 months old and Paddy being four years old.
The students had pre-prepared questions to ask Mrs White so that
they could further develop their knowledge on pregnancy, prepara-
tion for children, motherhood, and child developmental milestones.
The visit allowed the students to physically see some of the develop-
mental milestones we have been discussing in class and helped to
link everything they have learnt together. Huge thank-you to Mrs
White and the boys for coming in for the lesson.

2018 Murray River Culinary Challenge
T he ‘2018 Murray River Culinary Challenge Grand Final’ was held yesterday at Echuca TAFE. Our extremely talented finalists were Stephanie Crouch and Jasmin Malham who had won their way into this prestigious Grand Final by winning the Regional Final.
The girls’ task for the day was to prepare, cook, plate and serve, four serves of a three course meal. The menu was as follows: DISH 1: Smoked trout and spinach tart with roasted pumpkin, feta and rocket salad DISH 2: Herb crusted lamb rack with olive oil mash, buttered spring vegetables and red wine jus DISH 3: Spiced cranberry poached pears There were four teams of two students from the Murray River Regions including Wangaratta, Murray Valley, Goulburn Murray and our students representing Campaspe Region. The teams were judged on bench & stove work, workflow, OH&S, hygiene methods and principles of cookery, preparation of three menu items and creative presentation. Our students worked beautifully together, staying calm throughout the two hours of arduous work. Their delivered meals looked and tasted sensational. After the judges had made their final tallies of each team, on each course based on the many criteria, our girls came an extremely close runners-up to the winners from Wangaratta. Congratulations must go to Steph and Jasmin who represented our school amazingly well and we could not be more proud of their efforts, their talents and their professionalism in this competition and their hospitality studies and skills overall. Well done girls!

Barista Training Begins!
O n Friday 31 August our first six students undertook barista training on the College’s brand new coffee machine. This initiative has been undertaken with the profits from the Rochester Secondary College Debutante Ball of 2017. It is an exciting new development for the College’s vocational pathway, recognising the value of workplace skills for our senior students.
The training was provided free of charge to Year 12s James Shaw, Jack Trewick, Jasmine O’Donoghue, Gabby McCaig, Elise Williams and Year 11 Wallace Green. Leon McAsey and Joel Raglus from JR’s Coffee were our very patient trainers and the back kitchen smelled abso-lutely wonderful that day!
Keep an eye on the bulletin and an ear on the announcements; our new baristas will be practising very soon! Teachers have nobly volun-teered to be the guinea pigs. Coffee will be served to senior students and staff only, but there will be hot chocolates for everyone.
