Your Voice Matters—the ACT National Curriculum Survey®
The ACT National Curriculum Survey is under way and it’s an opportunity for educators to get in onthe blueprint for assessments. ACT needs more responses from K–12 educators, in particular, so pleaseshare your insights with us today in this short survey (/researchpolicy/nationalcurriculumsurvey/participate/).
Conducted every three to five years, the survey collects data about the knowledge and abilities students needto be successful learners. Results inform academic standards and guide the development of curriculumbasedassessments such as ACT Aspire® and the ACT® test.
ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign ApplicationsNow OnlineApplications for the 2015–2016 ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign (ACT CCRC) launched online(/readinesscampaign/applications.html) in July and are open for all participating states until each state’sdeadline. This is the first year ACT CCRC applications have been available online, and it should provide asimpler, more accessible application process for employers, schools, and students across the country.
ACT is sending emails to those community colleges, high schools, and high school seniors identified from ourdata as strong candidates. Unsolicited applications are also welcome and no differentiation will be made forthe reviewing panels. With the assistance of ACT State Organizations and state councils, this streamlinedapplication will allow deserving students, schools, and employers who may have formerly slipped through thecracks to be recognized and included for consideration, providing a larger pool of applicants for the selectionpanels to review.
If you know of a deserving applicant (including your school) in a participating state, reach out and let themknow about the ACT CCRC. The website (/readinesscampaign/) has more information about the campaign(/readinesscampaign/about.html) process, the 2015 state and national exemplars, and photos and video fromthe 2015 ACT National Gala on College and Career Readiness.

ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign: The ACT National Gala on College and Career Readinesswas held June 9 in Washington, DC, and two national exemplars were chosen from the Southeast district.Congratulations to Lamar Greene of Richmond, Virginia, and Eastman Chemical Company of Kingsport,Tennessee, for their selection as the Student Readiness Award and Workplace Success Award exemplars.
ACT College and Career Readiness Workshops: ACT will once again hold its ACT College and CareerReadiness Workshops. The free, halfday, interactive workshops are open to all educators, principals, schoolcounselors, district testing coordinators, and district curriculum professionals. There are more than 70workshops in the Southeast alone. Be sure to check out a workshop in your area and register(/learningevents/workshops/).
Kentucky: It’s amazing how fast the summer goes! The Kentucky Council will be the first state in theSoutheast district to hold its fall meeting, slated for September 1 at the University of Kentucky.
Mississippi: As mentioned in the June newsletter, the Mississippi ACT State Organization Conference hasbeen rescheduled for November 17. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to register(http://www.cvent.com/events/mississippiactstateorganizationconference/eventsummary520c888d6e1f4779aa69ada8241eaab1.aspx).
South Carolina: Congratulations to South Carolina Council Chair Dr. Sean Alford, the new superintendent(http://www.aikenstandard.com/article/20150701/AIK0101/150639916) for Aiken County Public Schools.
Alabama: The Alabama Council met in June to plan thedetails of its December 10 conference. The theme thisyear is Student Readiness: Focus Forward on Results. Beon the lookout for savethedate and registration emails.
Florida: In June, the Florida Council met in Orlando todiscuss recruiting new Council members and getting moreinvolved in the community. New Council member ShirleyHurley shared information about AVID. The Council isalready busy planning next year’s ACT College and CareerReadiness Campaign.

Happy summer from the Northwest district! We are moving along and getting ready for what is shaping up tobe another busy year.
Alaska: Congratulations to our 2015–2016 Alaska Council elected leadership:

During its spring meeting at the University of Alaska–Anchorage, the Alaska Council reviewed the Elementaryand Secondary Education Act (ESEA) and its renewal. After discussing details of the most recent version thatwas approved by the Senate Education Committee, the Council also discussed amendments specific toAlaska, as set forth by Senator Lisa Murkowski (RAK), and how those amendments could positively impactAlaska students. Colorado: The Colorado Council is in the midst of planning its September 18 conference. Registration is underway and breakout sessions are confirmed. Council members are currently at work securing a keynote speakerand student panel participants for the closing lunch session. Nevada: The Nevada Council established two subcommittees to work through two important initiatives for2015–2016: conference planning and the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign. Thesesubcommittees will help the Council segue into its 2015–2016 work with ease once it reconvenes in August.
Oregon: Oregon tied up the Northwest district spring inperson meetings with its June gathering. With much tolook forward to in 2015–2016, the Council discussed process and strategy for engaging Oregon in the ACTCollege and Career Readiness Campaign (/readinesscampaign/about.html). The Council also discussed ACTPolicy Platforms (/policyplatforms/) and how they can help inform the Council’s work and support Oregonstudents.
Utah: Best wishes to Utah Council member Chris Rivera, who is retiring from Weber State University Davis asassociate dean. Chris has given his time, passion, and professional expertise to the Utah Council for anumber of years. Studentcentered at all times, Chris was a big voice in advocating for statewide ACT testingin Utah and has served the students of Utah selflessly. This year, Chris gave extra time to determineexemplars for Utah’s first ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign.

Kansas: A big congratulations to Sumner Academy, the2015 College and Career Transition Award recipient for theACT College and Career Readiness Campaign. SumnerAcademy was chosen by the Kansas Council as the stateexemplar and was subsequently chosen as the nationalexemplar by the national selection committee. KansasCouncil Chair Bobby Gandu attended the ACT NationalGala on College and Career Readiness in Washington, DC,on June 9.

The summer has remained busy for the Midwest district, with four summer meetings in June and several moretaking place before the school year begins. Across the Midwest, councils also look forward to promotingapplications to the 2015–2016 ACT CCRC and actively engaging in the elections process for the ACT StateOrganizations Steering Committee this fall.
Illinois: The Illinois Council met at Oakton Community College, thanks to host and Council member MicheleBrown. The Council welcomes three new members this fall: Phyllis Cavallone, Doug Bodeen, and Jo MarieYonkus. These new members will expand the reach of the Council and add to the already vibrant discussionsat each meeting. The Council is still seeking sessions for its December conferences—please contact RoseBabington (mailto:[email protected]) if you have an interest in presenting.
Indiana, Iowa, and Michigan: Activities include summer council meetings, along with council and ACT StateOrganizations members attending the July ACT Enrollment Planners Conference in Chicago.
Minnesota: Minnesota Chair Liz Nelson hosted the Council in Stillwater and coordinated an evening trolleytour as a break from a full twoday meeting. The Council talked at length about upcoming statewide testingchanges and about programs and partnerships in the state that could serve as models and best practices.They were excited to welcome new member Kim Oppelt to the meeting.
Missouri: During its twoday meeting in Lake of the Ozarks, the Missouri Council engaged in lively discussionabout this spring’s statewide ACT administration. Council members also talked extensively about crafting afull day of learning and networking at the March 2016 state conference and identified strong practitioners fromacross the state to present.
Wisconsin: The Wisconsin Council met in Lake Elkhart to discuss statewide issues and start planning itsFebruary 2016 conference. Special thanks to Secretary Patricia Goeman for keeping the group on track asthey set the Connecting College and Career theme and discussed session topics. The Council also welcomednew members Dave Eckmann and Andy Jansen.
The Northeast district has had a productive summer full of meetings, conference calls, and planning activities.Thank you to members for their participation in a number of ACT State Organizations ad hoc task forces. It isgreat to have Northeast states represented on these task forces, and ACT encourages everyone to look foropportunities to participate in the future. Your feedback truly helps ACT learn and finetune the work itundertakes.
In addition to these task forces, many opportunities exist to take on a larger role within individual stateorganizations as ACT continues to expand its work in the Northeast. To learn more, please email DentonDeSotel (mailto:[email protected]).
Connecticut: Connecticut has begun planning its fall Council meeting, which will coincide with an ACT Collegeand Career Readiness Workshop (/learningevents/workshops/). The Council hopes to generate interest amongattendees to join the Connecticut ACT State Organization and assist the Council in new statewide initiatives.
Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island: Maine, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island continue to work onbuilding complete state councils, with outreach to potential new council members. All K–8, postsecondaryeducation, and workforce development professionals interested in taking a leadership role in this work areencouraged to reach out to Denton DeSotel (mailto:[email protected]).

Maryland, Delaware, and DC: The Maryland, Delaware, and DC Council is planning a fall meeting to discussopportunities to increase awareness of the Council among state education and workforce developmentleaders. In addition to participating in the ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign, the Council plans towork on additional opportunities to promote college and career readiness within the region.
New Jersey: New Jersey will hold its Council meeting in late August. The Council is working to recruit andidentify new members and will discuss initiatives for the state.
Ohio: Ohio held its summer Council meeting to begin planning for both the 2016 Ohio ACT State OrganizationConference and the 2016 ACT College and Career Readiness Campaign. As both of these initiatives takeshape, Ohio ACT State Organization members will have opportunities to suggest conference sessions andnominate ACT CCRC exemplars within the state.
Each state in the Southwest district will welcome new council members. One of the many goals of councilswas to expand and diversify membership to reflect education and workforce stakeholders from a variety offields. ACT State Organizations is proud to welcome counselors, principals, higher education administrators,college access providers, and workforce professionals.
Arizona: As the new year kicks into gear, the Arizona Council marches forward with a few key issues in mind:college and career readiness, engaging with underserved learners, and increasing awareness about bestpractices in the field. With this in mind, they have begun planning the Arizona ACT State OrganizationConference in December, Leading with Research: Expanding College and Career Readiness. Additionalinformation will come soon. A special thank you to Mark Boggie, Brant Brown, Anne Lassen, and Mary KayKeller, who have dedicated years of service to the Council and will be transitioning out of their roles by the endof the summer.
New Hampshire: The New Hampshire Council extendsspecial congratulations to Safran Aerospace for itsselection as a national semifinalist for the ACT NationalWorkplace Success Award. California: The California Council will hold its annual fallmeeting in San Diego on August 14. The Council will beplanning its first statewide conference, which will be heldat California State University, Fullerton, on Friday,February 26. The conference will focus on social justiceissues impacting students and educators. New Mexico: Unfortunately, the 2015 New Mexico ACT State Organization Conference, scheduled for Friday,September 18, 2015, has been cancelled. Anyone who has already registered will receive a full refund. ACT appreciates the work the New Mexico Council put into planning and the interest membersexpressed in participating.
Texas: The Texas Council plans to welcome many new members this fall from the community college, K–12,and workforce fields. We are excited to diversify the representation with a more inclusive group ofstakeholders. The next Council meeting is scheduled for September 22 in Houston. Thank you to Dr. BennieLambert and Lone Star College for hosting us this fall.
Louisiana: Congratulations to Dr. Edward Cancienne, thenew chair of the Louisiana Council. The Council met duringthe summer to discuss some of the most pressing issuesimpacting education and workforce leaders in the state.The Council is working with ACT to strategize and identifysolutions to these issues.
