Act-Belong-CommitWALK WITH ME

The original Act-Belong-Commit Walk With Me was created by the Riptide Youth Performance Company based out of the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre (MANPAC) and performed during the Stretch Arts Festival 2018.

Act-Belong-Commit Walk With Me was created by the young Riptide ensemble (made up of emerging artists aged 15 – 25) and artistic director Katt Osborne. The work took audiences on a playful and interactive journey to explore the fragile beauty of the local landscape. The “audience” were given headphones and listened to text and soundscapes as they followed the “tour guide” around the quay in Mandurah. Along the way the audience encountered performers and were invited to participate in playful interactions along the journey. Act-Belong-Commit Walk With Me provided the audience members with a fun and surprising experience enabling them to see their locality differently and through the eyes of young people.

Riptide Youth Performance Company and ART ON THE MOVE are bringing the concept of Act-Belong-Commit Walk With Me to Harvey in August 2019.

Three professional performing arts facilitators including Artistic Director, Katt Osborne, will work with a group of 6 – 12 young people (15-25 years), a local young musician or band and a local young visual artist to create the content. The performers will create, script and perform the piece themselves aided by the Riptide Youth Performance Company. The content of the piece is as of yet unknown as it will be decided by the performers and facilitators (in Mandurah the content was based around the aftermath of a tsunami). The production piece will be professionally videoed and the final audio-visual work will be available for the benefit of participants and the broader Harvey community.

A significant community event is being planned to launch the completed Act-Belong-Commit Walk With Me – Harvey video in February 2020, at the Harvey Amphitheatre.

So, we are looking for 6 – 12 local young performers, not necessarily with experience, that can commit to this project from Wednesday 26th August to Sunday 1st September 2019. Times will be after school hours, most likely 4pm – 7pm on weekdays and 10am – 4pm on the weekend. There will be some of your time required prior to the performance in February 2020 (tentative dates Tues 4th Feb – Sunday 9th Feb with the performance on Sunday 9th Feb 2020). You will get to work with performing arts industry professionals to create and perform an exciting original piece based on our local town and area. Act-Belong-Commit Walk With Me - Harvey has been grant funded through Riptide Youth Performance Company and ART ON THE MOVE so there will be no cost to the local young performers and musicians. Additional costs will be met by the Harvey Recreation and Cultural Centre through Raise the Roof Funding from Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries.

Riptide Youth Performance Company is based at Mandurah Performing Arts Centre (MANPAC). Their focus is on growing the artistic skills and talents of their local community of young people to empower and inspire, leaving a finished collective of passionate creatives. They do this by offering a range of performing arts development opportunities that lead to the creation of original, innovative and playful new performances and the raising of specific theatrical skillsets.

Riptide runs Open Days and Workshops throughout the year for local young people aged 15-25 who want to increase their performing arts skills. They also have a core ensemble of young artists who create and perform original shows throughout the year.

Katt Osborne is a director, creative producer and theatre maker. Katt was a founding member and inaugural general manager of The Last Great Hunt. She is currently a Resident Artist (Director) with Black Swan State Theatre Company, and the Artistic Director of youth contemporary performance ensembles in Mandurah and Bunbury. ART ON THE MOVE is based in Fremantle and is Western Australia’s only organisation dedicated to touring contemporary visual art exhibitions across the regions, interstate and beyond. They do this by touring quality contemporary art with appropriate learning and development opportunities that speak to and develop the unique cultural narratives of communities whatever the cultural practice, age, ability and engagement with culture.
