Project Spotlight CSMI One of Masters’ latest job completions for 2016 is a facility for Central States Manufacturing, Inc. (CSMI) here in Seguin. Masters teamed up with Sullivan Contracting during the design process and followed through to the completion of this job. The foreman on the project for Masters was Chris Koepsel who, along with his team, completed this project with an accelerated completion date and stayed ahead of schedule throughout the project.

CSMI is an employee owned metal building component manufacturer that has numerous branches throughout the southeast United States, the closest being in Cedar Hill outside the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. The facility that was just completed here in Seguin is approximately 40,000 square feet of manufacturing area with another 2,000 square feet of office/administrative area. The materials they will manufacture at the new facility range from structural components such as purlins and light gauge steel channels to sheet metal wall and roof panels.

We would like to thank Chris and his team for doing a great job on the project, and also Sullivan Contracting for the opportunity.

EC&M News Q&A,

Test your knowledge!! Defining Overcurrent!! Q. What does the Code mean by “overcurrent”?

A. Overcurrent exists when current exceeds the rating of equipment or the ampacity of a conductor, due to an overload, short circuit, or ground fault. The Code defines these three terms in Art. 100 as follows:

• Overload. An overload is a condition where equipment or conductors carry current exceeding their current rating. A fault, such as a short circuit or ground fault, isn’t an overload. An example of an overload is plugging two 12.50A (1,500W) hair dryers into a 20A branch circuit.

• Short circuit. A short circuit is the unintentional electrical connection between any two normally current-carrying conductors of an electrical circuit, either line-to-line or line-to-neutral.

• Ground fault. A ground fault is an unintentional, electrically conducting connection between an ungrounded conductor of an electrical circuit and the normally noncurrent-carrying conductors, metallic enclosures, metallic raceways, metallic equipment, or the earth. During the period of a ground fault, dangerous voltages will be present on metal parts until the circuit overcurrent device opens.

Overcurrent devices protect conductors and equipment. Selecting the proper overcurrent protection for a specific circuit can become more complicated than it sounds. The general rule for overcurrent protection is that conductors must be protected in accordance with their ampacities at the point where they receive their supply [240.4 and 240.21]. However, there are many special cases that deviate from this basic rule, such as the overcurrent protection limitations for small conductors [240.4(D)] and the rules for specific conductor applications found in other Articles, as listed in Table 240.4(G). There are also a number of rules allowing tap conductors in specific situations [240.21(B)]. Article 240 even has limits on where overcurrent devices are allowed to be located [240.24].

An overcurrent protection device must be capable of opening a circuit when an overcurrent situation occurs, and must also have an interrupting rating sufficient to avoid damage in fault conditions [110.9]. Carefully studying the provisions of this Article will help you provide sufficient overcurrent protection in the correct location.

Article 240 covers the general requirements for overcurrent protection and the installation requirements of overcurrent devices.

Safety News Reporting near Misses

Introductory Comments Reporting near-miss incidents is essential to coworkers from injury or death by simply reporting close calls.

Meeting Starter Questions Can you give an example of a near-miss incident that you were involved in or you witnessed? What circumstances made it a near –miss incident and not an accident? Did you report the incident to your supervisor; why or why not?

Critical Safety Point Reporting a near-miss incident can prevent a future accident.

Example: A forklift operator nearly hits you. You report the incident As a result, the company creates a pedestrian walkway aisle.

Now let’s say you don’t report the incident. One week later, the forklift operator hits a coworker, paralyzing him. Had you reported the earlier incident, this wouldn’t have happened. You would have saved your coworker from permanent injury.

What you can do: If you are involved in a near-miss incident follow these guidelines:

• Report all near misses. Treat every near-miss incident or “close call” as a red flag that something is seriously wrong and requires attention. Do not let excuses such as fear of discipline or willingness to participate in the investigation get in the way of reporting. Imagine explaining these excuses to your injured coworker.

• Do not delay. Report the incident immediately. Waiting allows an opportunity for an injury to occur. • Relay the correct info. Report the facts. Who was involved, what job tasks you were performing, when

and where the incident occurred, and why you think it happened. Note: Use a form if your company has one.

• Suggest a solution. Follow the saying – don’t bring problems to your boss, bring solutions. Come up with a plan of action to prevent the incident from occurring again.

Remember: If you were involved in a near miss incident, you were fortunate not to be injured. Be sure to report it so that good fortune extends to your coworker’s too.
