PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2019/2020

This is certainly not the President’s report I thought I would be writing at the beginning of the 2019/2020 financial year! As members will be aware from my last report, 2018/19 had been a difficult year for our Executive Committee as a consequence our AGM was deferred to January 2020 and no activities were organized during the latter half of that year. However, 2020 was a new beginning. Annemarie Webb had offered to take the Secretary role and at the AGM, Helen Zull joined us as Vice President – a role we had been unable to fill for several years. They joined Alan Pearce, our long-standing Treasurer, Kerry Jones, Editor Plenty News and Views and myself. The Plenty Historic Church was to be complete by May 2020 and we had a year of activities planned and then there was COVID!

Members of the Society were deeply saddened when Neisha Rudd, our inaugural President and more recently Secretary, lost her battle with cancer. Neisha had been the driving force in establishing the Society and was a well-respected and very active member of the Plenty community. Whilst being unable to provide a tribute to Neisha at the time of her death due to the COVID stage 4 lock down, the Society with Neisha’s family will provide an appropriate tribute once we are able..We did manage to hold our planned meeting in March – the weekend the COVID Stage 3 restrictions were announced. This meeting was intended to introduce the new owners of the Plenty Store and allow them to share their vision for the old store with us. We went ahead with a small gathering, which we were able to hold outdoors allowing appropriate social distancing. The plans to open a cafe were greeted with enthusiasm and equally the owners were keen to encompass the history of Plenty and the store in their development. A meeting place for the community which we have lacked for some time and the potential to provide catering for activities at both the Plenty Community Hall and the new Historic Church seemed just the stimulus residents needed after the social and environmental impacts of the re-development of Yan Yean Road. Unfortunately, this exciting development has been delayed as a consequence of the stage 4 lock down. I have been in contact with the owners and they are still planning to go ahead – hopefully something to look forward to in 2021.

The restoration of the former Methodist/Uniting Church has come to fruition. Major Roads Projects Victoria (MRPV) and the contractor BMD were true to their word and ensured the church was fully restored. C-Built carried out the restoration work and have done an excellent job. They worked with the Society to ensure restoration was as close as possible to the original building, whilst enabling us to add some features to make the building suitable for community use. The planned celebration to hand the church over to Nillumbik Council and Plenty Historical Society was unable to go ahead; instead,a representative from MRPV met with the Manager Property and Facilities Maintenance from Council and myself at the church building – appropriately socially distanced and masked and handed over the keys and instruction manuals. The church has become known as the Plenty Historic Church to save confusion between the original Methodist church and the more recent Uniting church resulting in a constantly bracketed joint name. The Diamond Valley Parish of the Uniting Church approached the Society asking if we would like to have a joint celebration marking the change in ownership and function of the church building. We have agreed to do this as a number of former parishioners of the Plenty church now attend Diamond Creek so there is a strong personal interest in the future of the church and pleasure in seeing it restored so beautifully. This function was planned for May 2020 at the completion of the restoration however, we hope it will still go ahead early in 2021.

Whilst we have not been able to hold activities, we have kept business going. Alana McQueen, a member of the well-known Plenty McQueen family, has designed a new web site for us. We are just finishing getting content into place and the site can go live. It will be

5

Page 6: acncpubfilesprodstorage.blob.core.windows.net... · Web viewPlenty Historical Society Inc. is registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission is an endorsed

great to have a contact point again, and a place to promote our activities and the history of Plenty. We can also feature our lovely new home – the Plenty Historic Church.

Our Plenty News and Views newsletter has had three editions this year including a special tribute edition for Neisha. In addition, I have sent out news updates between newsletters to try to keep us connected.

The Plenty War Memorial Gates and Garden has benefitted from Helen’s gardening care – a good lock down project! And we also had some donations of plants from community members. The Society had planned to hold a regular service at the Plenty War Memorial Gates to mark Remembrance (formerly Armistice) Day each year. This could not happen this year, however the flag was flown in compliance with the Armistice protocol, and Glenda and Milton placed the red poppies, made by the Plenty craft group, on the Gates as they have done for a number of years. On the day, when Alan and I went over to raise the flag at 11.02 we found some local residents with a radio playing the Armistice tribute at 11.00 – as we stood for our minute of silence a passing walker joined us. Nothing organized but an impromptu gathering paying tribute. Hopefully, next year we will have an appropriate service.

Now that Victoria is coming out of lockdown, we can get to work setting the church up for community use, all of which must follow a COVID-safe plan. This will mean activities at the church will be limited in the first instance. Activities are limited to a maximum of 10 people to allow required social distancing. We will need to collect contact details for all people using the building and also ensure correct hygiene and disinfecting techniques and of course at present masks must be worn. The Executive does not have the capacity to supervise activities to this level, consequently use of the building will be limited to members who must take responsibility for these measures if they are organizing an activity. Once the COVID-safe plan is no longer required we will be able to open the church to wider community use. To use the most commonly over used word of 2020, it has been an unprecedented year! My grateful thanks to all of the Executive, you have kept things going despite all obstacles and thank you to you our members for continuing to support the Society. Always the optimist – next year will be better!

TREASURER’S REPORT

Treasurer’s Financial Report - 2019-2020 Financial Year

It is my pleasure and duty to present the Financial Reports of the Plenty Historical Society Inc for the 2019/2020 Financial Year.

The past year has been so different to any other reporting year, that it is difficult to know where to start. Society activities had to be cancelled or curtailed from the outset, and consequently, there really is little to report in the financial area. We can report that income for the year totalled $643-60, (compared to the previous year’s income of $4,505-00, which included Grants totalling $3,970-00). Income was made up of Members Fees of $225-00, Members Fees paid in advance for future years of $385-00, Donations of $30-00, and a small refund of $3-60.

Outgoings totalled some $653-73, (compared with the previous year’s outgoings of $5,667-75) resulting in a small deficit of $10-13 from operations of the Society. Main costs were Insurance $199-50, Printing and Stationery $190-83, Postage and postal fees 184-40, Royal Historical Society of Victoria Affiliation $75-00 and a small miscellaneous payment of $4-00. The postal fee of $110-00 related to a replied pay service used by the Society for several years, but has now been cancelled.

While the 2019-2020 financial year has been one of wait and see before being able to act and in the end, not being able to do so. While 2020-2021 began with more of the same, the future is looking brighter with the progressive removal of COVID restrictions.

On the brighter side, the Society has taken a three years lease on the Plenty Historical Church, (former Plenty Uniting Church), has gained four new members, and a greater number of existing members have renewed their memberships for three years. Our membership now consists of 21 Families, (41 individuals), and hopefully we will be able to attract more new members once we can open the church building for community use. The Society executive have also agreed to extend the current Memberships for all members (current financial year) to the end of the 2021/2022 financial year because of the impact of the COVID pandemic.

It would be remiss of me if I did not pay my respects and sincere thanks to our retiring Auditor, Milton Embling, who has audited the Society’s accounts for a serious number of years, and has been of great help and assistance to me with ready advice and help in my role as Treasurer. I am indeed very grateful for his assistance and willingness to help over many years and thank him sincerely for all he has done. I wish him well in his retirement from auditing our accounts.

Alan Pearce F FinHonorary Treasurer and Public. Officer.
