INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORSThe Journal of Clinical Investigation publishes originalpapers on research pertinent to human biology and disease.Work with animals or in vitro techniques is acceptable ifit is relevant to human normal or abnormal bio og . Nopart of a paper may have been or may be published else-where.Rapid Publications. If an author believes that a concise paper(5 Journal pages or less) is of unusual scientific importance, theEditors will make a decision within 2 weeks of receiving the paper.Request for Rapid Publication processing must be stated in theauthor(s) covering letter. Such manuscript must not exceed 10double-spaced typewritten pages (including abstract, text, tables, figures, legends, and references). Any combination of S tables, and/or figures is equivalent to 1 page of text in reaching the 10-pagelimit. Margins must comply as outlined below. The papers mustrepresent definitive and original studies that are completely do-cumented both by reference to the literature and by descriptionof the experimental procedures employed. If accepted for publi-cation, these short papers will be published 2 months before iongerpapers accepted on tthe same date.To assure prompt publication, authors must submit manuscripts

that are without error and that confrom to the "Instructions toAuthors" in every detail. Accordingly, final artwork must followspecifications in the paragraph, Figures and legends. If such apaper is rejected, the reasons for rejection and the reviewers' com-ments will not be sent to the author. These papers may, however,be resubmitted through routine channels. Such resubmission re-quires a new processing fee and is not considered a revised manu-script.

PROCEDURE FOR SUBMISSION OF ALL PAPERSSubmit 3 complete sets of the paper (1 copy must be the originaltypescript). Do not staple the paper together. Double-space theentire manuscript - including abstracts, footnotes, references, and legends - leaving at least 1/¼ inch between the lines and allow1',2-inch margins. Authors must state in their covering letter thename, address, and telephone number of the corresponding author.Processing fee. Submit papers to the Editor with a $50 check, purchase or money order per paper for processing. Revised manu-scripts submitted within 1 year of the previous decision do notrequire an additional processing fee.Prior Publication. The Journal does not publish material thathas been reported elsewhere. In submitting an article, the author(s)must state in the covering letter that the material has not beenpublished elsewhere and is not under consideration for publicationelsewhere. If any form of preliminary publication other than anabstract of not more than 400 words has occurred or is contem-plated, a reprint or a manuscript of the actual or proposed pre-liminary publication must accompany the article submitted to theJournal. This includes symposia, proceedings, transactions, books, articles published by invitation, and preliminary publications ofany kincd except an abstract of 400 words.Decisions. Editorial decisions rendered are: (1) accept; (2) acceptif revised; (3) willing to reconsider revision; (4) reconsider revisionde novo without commitment to publish; and (5) reject either forpriority or scientific reasons.Organize all papers as follows: title page, abstract, introduction, methods, results, discussion, acknowledgments, references, figurelegends, footnotes, and tables. Number all pages consecutively.Style. Capitalize trade names. Give the formal, chemical nameof a compound as established by international convention after thefirst use of the trivial name. Thereafter, you may use the trivialname. For special materials and equipment, give the manufac-turer's name and location. Use metric system and the SystemeInternational d'Unites (SI) as noted in the JCI Abbreviation List. For biochemical abbreviations, use those currently recommendedby The Journal of Biological Chemistry in its instructions to au-thors. These and others are recommended by the Council of Bi-ology Editors Style Manual, 4th edition. Avoid nonstandard ab-breviations, but when they must be used, define all of them in afootnote. Abbreviate units of measure only when used with num-bers. Specify estimates of variance (e.g., SE, SD) and give refer-ences for statistical methods.

Indicate dual authors in text by always listing both surnames. For three or more authors, use Jones et al.Title. Mention in the title if observations have been made onanimals; all other titles will refer to studies on man or in tissuesderived from man. If the study has been conducted in tissues fromhuman subjects, an appropriate qualifying phrase should be addedsuch as "in vitro," "in cultured fibroblasts," "in tissue slices,"etc.Title. Give title, author(s), department(s), and institution(s)where the work was done, city, state, and zip code. Furnish a

condensed title- of not more than 72 units including letters andspaces- as a running foot. Refer to a preliminary report or ab-stract in a footnote to the title.Abstract. The abstract published at the opening of each articleshould be written as a concrete precis- not just a conceptualsummary- and should state the objectives, the newly observedfinding, and the conclusions drawn from these observations. Sincethe abstract will also be sent to abstracting journals, it should bewritten for as wide a readership as possib e and may not exceed250 words. The abstract must be self-explanatory without recourseto the text; abbreviations, footnotes, or references should not beused.Footnotes. Number footnotes to the text consecutively. Desig-nate footnotes to tables by these symbols and in this order: , ,§, 11, 7, 00 t IReferences. Type references double-spaced on a separate sheetand number them in order of appearance in the text. Citationssuch as "in preparation," "personal communication," or "to bepublished" must be footnotes, but include papers in press in thereferences. Submit written permission when citing a personal com-munication. In references, do not use "et al." for more than twoauthors; include all authors' names. Give initials followed by sur-names, and invert only for the first author. Abbreviate the namesof journals as in Biosis. Spell out the names of unlisted journals.Supply inclusive page numbers. Examples:

Figures and legends. Send 3 sets of sharp glossy prints in 3separate envelopes marked with the first author's name and thenumber of figures enclosed with the manuscript. If the prints areout of focus or have been reduced so that the lettering is less than3 mm high, the originial drawings, regardless of size, will be re-quested upon acceptance of the manuscript. Charts with simplecurves will be reduced by the printer to column width (3 inches);plan the size of the lettering so that the height of letters will beabout 13/4 mm after reduction by the printer. Mark the back ofeach figure with its number and the (first) author's name andindicate the top of the figure. Clearly label parts- such as A andB - on the figure itself. Give the title in the figure legend, not onthe figure itself.

FIcURE 1 A short title. In addition, a short explanation should be givenin sufficient detail to make the whole intelligible without reference to text(unless similar explanation has been given in another figure).

Tables. Type tables double-spaced on sheets separate from thetext and make them self-contained and self-explanatory. Do notuse vertical lines. Center the table number (e.g., Table I) and titleat the top. Use symbols for footnotes (see paragraph Footnotes).Do not submit photographs of tables. Give sufficient explanaionand detail in the legend to make the experiment or procedureintelligible without reference to the text.
