Hi, my name is Marco Antonio Orozco de la CruzChemical Engineer Teacher from Guadalajara University for

preparatory level.

I've been learning English language at the PROULEX Institute.

I did the GESE (Graded Examination in Spoken English) from Trinity College London.

Binary Compounds

• We have to know that a binary compound is:

• A substance combine by two elements e.g.:

MCation

+ XAnion

MX+ -

Page 6: ACIDS: Inorganic binary compounds writing and naming

• And the compounds are classified in:

A) Hydracids AcidsB) Oxides C) AnhydridesD)Salts

Kinds of Nomenclature

• Traditional

• IUPAC

Page 8: ACIDS: Inorganic binary compounds writing and naming

• Now, we´ll show how to name some acids:

• First we will identify an acid compound:

Its name is derived by combination of the anion (“Non Metal Element”) , that we write on the right side of the formula and the cation (“Hydrogen”) we’ll write on the left side.

Page 9: ACIDS: Inorganic binary compounds writing and naming

• Next we have some examples:

• HCl• HI• H2S

Page 10: ACIDS: Inorganic binary compounds writing and naming

Naming by Traditional

• First: we are going to write the name from the Non Metal and then we add “–hydric”

• Second: write “acid”

• Example: HCl Chlorhydric acid

Page 11: ACIDS: Inorganic binary compounds writing and naming

• Naming by IUPAC

We should use the next numerical prefixes1: Mono2: Di3: Tri4: Tetra5: Penta6: Hexa

Page 12: ACIDS: Inorganic binary compounds writing and naming

• Now we’ll name some acid compounds

First, we are going to write the word “hydrogen”Second, we are going to add the name from

“Non metal element”Third, finally we add -ide

• Examples:

• HCl – hydrogen chloride• HI – hydrogen iodide• H2S – dihydrogen sulfide
