Stability for our Neighbors

Dear Supporters and Friends,

We are amazed at the progress you’ve helped us to make in our community this year and have so much to celebrate. Thanks to your support of Imagine Housing, more families are able to call the Eastside home. This past year alone, you helped take 58 families off of our waiting lists. With your help, we have accomplished a great deal, but there is still much work to be done.

Our waiting lists total 2,153 households, more than four times the number of homes we have to offer. With rents on the Eastside increasing rapidly and beyond the means of many in our community, affordable housing is needed now more than ever.

At the end of 2014, our Board of Directors approved an exciting new five year strategic plan that embraces a bold vision: an Eastside with interconnected and welcoming communities. The hallmark goal of this plan is to double the number of affordable homes we have to offer, but we can’t achieve this growth without your continued support. Let’s create a community where ALL people can live, learn, work and play.

Thank you for helping us continue to build welcoming communities.

With heartfelt thanks,

“The fear was overwhelming.”

1

With just over two million people worldwide currently diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), it’s hard to imagine that one family could have both parents suffering from the disease. But for the Johnson family, this became reality when Craig, the sole provider, dropped a saw on his leg one day at work. The emergency visit to the hospital spurred many conversations, including his kids finally telling their mom that dad had been falling repeatedly at home and had told them not to tell her.

Leanne, diagnosed in 1998 with MS, recognized the symptoms and, along with Craig’s doctor, insisted he see a neurologist. Since then, Craig’s MS has progressed significantly and he now uses a motorized wheelchair to get around and is unable to continue his 20 year career in construction. Craig notes, “Living with MS means you never have the same day. You might be able to button your pants one hour and not the next.”

“It’s not always predictable which makes maintaining work hard,” adds Leanne. “You never know when you might have a muscle spasm.” This symptom, along with fatigue, interferes with their ability to function at home and at work.

Without steady income to support their family, Craig, Leanne and their two children became homeless, first living in a tent in a friend’s backyard and finally entering into a shelter program. After three months in the shelter, Leanne received a call letting her know she and her family had been selected to move into a three bedroom apartment at Velocity. “I almost fell off the chair when I got the call,” Leanne says.

The night they got the keys to their apartment, they couldn’t wait to move in and slept together on a towel on the floor. The fear of being homeless had been overwhelming. Sleeping in that apartment before the beds had been moved in, Leanne remembers thinking:

“How am I deserving of this? It gave me peace of mind which I haven’t had for 11 years. I was able to lay down, stare at the ceiling and not have a pit in my stomach.”

Nearly a year later, the financial relief affordable housing offers for the Johnson family isn’t the only thing they love about their home. Their mobility accessible apartment allows Craig to move easily throughout their home and, with an exercise room in the building, his physical therapist is able to come directly to Velocity. Their family is now a staple at community meals and after school homework club, embracing their community and the neighbors that make it up.

“Everybody has a story here,” Leanne concludes, “and living here makes you walk that much taller.”

“If we hadn’t been living here things would have been much worse.”

When Carrie and her family moved into Highland Gardens 10 years ago, they didn’t think it would be permanent. They moved with their three adopted children when they realized their $1,400 market rate rent was no longer sustainable for their family. Three years later, they were relieved they had found an affordable place to live when Carrie’s husband Brian unexpectedly lost his job. “If we hadn’t been living here things would have been much worse,” Carrie says.

After being unemployed for five months, Brian took a variety of jobs to support his family. He’s worked at a fast food chain, as a reservationist for a vacation resort, a custodian and a school bus driver. He even took an out of state sales job, but returned home when being away from the family was too difficult.

Brian, who now works for a local company that transports employees from their neighborhoods to work, comes home to an active household and community. With more than 100 kids living at Highland Gardens, there is always something going on and parents like Carrie and Brian are happy to have on-site after school and summer programming accessible to their kids.

Not only does it give their children a scheduled time and place to do homework, but it also provides them with necessities like lunch in the summertime and snacks during the school year. “There’s not always a lot of food at home,” Carrie explains, “so having somewhere they can get a full meal during the day is helpful.”

Carrie and her family are thankful for many things about living at Highland Gardens, but most of all, that having an affordable home has allowed them to stay together.

“This gave us a home that we could live in together as a family. It gave us a community. I tell my kids all the time, we may not have everything we want, but we have what we need.”

“It’s about my kids having consistency of not

just a home, but an entire environment. It’s the

fact that they have for the first time been in the

same school from the beginning of the school

year to the end. It’s about peace and a sense

of community. It’s about helping them to break

down the barriers they’ve spent their entire lives

building, like forming new relationships that they

hadn’t trusted in before because they didn’t

know if we would be here tomorrow. It’s about

their sense of insecurity evolving into a sense

of security.” Michelle
