OCTOBER 2015 DIARY Welcome back to the academic year 2015-16. The saying that time flies seems to be doubly true in the life of Longfield Academy! Since the start of September we have celebrated our Year 11 and Post 16 results. In Year 11 we had 56% of students gain 5 A* to C grades including English and maths and 61% left with both English and maths qualifications at C or better. In the sixth form 98% of A levels were passed with 61% at C grade or above with 56% of students going on to university. These results are a massive achievement for all Longfield students and their families. On our return we have successfully embedded the new school day times, and the shorter lesson time has been a huge success with both staff and students. We have also conducted our big push on uniform and we thank you for your support regarding shoes – the last remain- ing few issues should now be sorted over half term please. The new Year 7 are already making themselves an integral part of the Academy community and we have had over 50 new students join our post 16 provision and we extend a warm welcome to all the new parents and families of Longfield students. On the 16 th September we had a wonderful celebration event where we acknowledged a number of achievers in all aspects of academy life in every year group. Everyone had a marvellous evening and we hope to see many more of you at this event in future years. Longfield Academy was also the host venue of the KCC Try Angle Awards recently with several of our students being certificate winners and we extend our huge congratulations to them. The open events are always the highlight of term one and have been enormously successful and busy. The open evenings saw over 526 families through the door and this week we have hosted over 94 families on our open morning tours. It is a delight to see familiar faces as well as new ones wanting to see Longfield in action and keen to secure their children a place at our Academy. This is all in addition to the normal work of a school, namely teaching and learning which continues to go from strength to strength! DIARY Welcome back to the academic year 2015-16.

We have also conducted our big push on uniform and we thank you for your support regarding shoes – the last remain-ing few issues should now be sorted over half term please.

The new Year 7 are already making themselves an integral part of the Academy community and we have had over 50 new students join our post 16 provision and we extend a warm welcome to all the new parents and families of Longfield students.

On the 16th September we had a wonderful celebration

event where we acknowledged a number of achievers in all aspects of academy life in every year group.

Enjoy the newsletter, which shows some of the highlights of the term to date. As you will see, we are

‘achieving beyond expectations’ on a daily basis.

As co-Principals we are immensely proud to lead Longfield Academy. We believe in high aspirations for the whole community and aim to offer opportunities for individuals to develop personally as well as academically. The college system underpins the values of community, empathetic relationships and mutual support and allows us to guide the adults of the future to make informed decisions about their future. We know the journey through life is always beset with challenges; we aim to ensure our learners are curious, determined, creative, and able to work both independently and collaboratively enabling them to be successful.

Additionally, we believe it is crucial to have an understanding and appreciation of cultures, especially our own. We will work collaboratively to ensure no student is left behind. Above all, our strong moral compass will drive decision making at Longfield Academy to ensure all achieve beyond expectations.

Message from the Principals

We were delighted with the results our students achieved this summer. Year 11 achieved 56% grade C or better in 5 subjects including English and maths. This places Longfield as one of the best non-selective schools in Kent. In other measures, 85% made Expected Progress in English and 66% in maths and 6% achieved the EBacc.

High fliers include:

Saathana Ambikaibalan 1 A*, 1 A, 6B, 3C and AS grade C

Danny Buckley 1A, 5B, 3C and AS level grade C

High Fliers include:

Demi Asbury A*A Di*

Emma Holmes ABB

Joe Mulley-Goodbarne Di*Di*B

Michael Norman ABBB

Particular high fliers at AS are:

Robin Nixon AABC

Deepak Chopra AAB

Rafael Delfino ABB

Congratulations are also due to the new Year 11 cohort, where 60% gained a C or better in English literature. This provides a great platform for Year 11 to go on and be our most successful ever.

Acad

esults

There were plenty of celebrations in August when 10xa collected their GCSE English literature results. They smashed their expected grades and targets securing 100% A-C passes with a fantastic 67% scoring A or A*.

These amazing results were down to a lot of hard work, and detailed study of a number of texts during the year including 'The Great Gatsby', 'The Crucible', 'To Kill a Mockingbird' and 'Hamlet'.

The students are hoping for similar success in Year 11 as they study for their English language IGCSE.

Special mention should be made to the 4 students who secured an A* grade: Anja Cilia, Brooke Pinto, Lucy Snellin and Jack Smith.

Well done to all!

Nuffield Research Placements Celebration Evening

Two A level students from Longfield Academy, Milgy Matthews and Robin Nixon, have received the Nuffield Award and Gold Crest Award. After a competitive application process (only 1000 places given nationwide), each undertook a 4 week work placement during the summer holidays working on cutting-edge research alongside professional scientists and mathematicians.

Milgy went to the University of Kent and worked with Joe Watkins

“The project was based on certain water waves known as ‘solitons’, which are tsunami waves. The aim of the research was to measure the wave height and speed and compare it. The research placement gave me an opportunity to meet the university professors and gave me a head start in my A2 mathematics lessons.”

Robin went to Medway school of pharmacy with Vladimir Gubala

“I undertook research into the stability of Nanoparticle solutions and how various factors affect them. I learnt much on my placement not only about chemistry but what it is like to work in a research environment.”

Speaking to the supervisors of both students, they were very complimentary about the work ethic shown, practical skills and ability to learn new skills. They were keen to work with more of our students in the future.

From next term we will be incorporating Attitude to Learning grades on our reports. The de-

scriptors are as follows.

Excellent (Ex)

Motivated student who takes pride in their work and demonstrates initiative.

Completes classwork and homework to a high standard. They love the challenge of

learning and capitalise on opportunities to improve.

Good (Gd)

Completes classwork and homework to a standard in line with ability and shows

some commitment to developing their own learning. They are willing to improve

and learn from their mistakes.

Requires improvement (RI)

Has potential to do more but gives minimal commitment and demonstrates little

self-motivation to learn. Homework and classwork may be inconsistent or lack

evidence of effort.

Concern (CN)

Poorly motivated, inconsistent, can be disruptive and lacks focus. Homework and

classwork is frequently not completed.

As these will be available from next term it is perfectly possible for every student to get Ex or Gd

if they return after the break with a commitment to learning and then try their best. They need

to work hard in class and attempt homework with effort. The benefits of this will be improved

progress grades and happy parents and teachers. It’s a win-win situation. We will remind parents

about this once again nearer the reporting window.

It’s been exciting and fascinating to see so many faces already using the LRC, both new and old.

We have seen all of our new Year 7 students embark on the Accelerated Reader Scheme and

some with great gusto. It’s brilliant to hear updates on what is happening in their novel from the

characters to the ‘best’ bits of the story.

As part of the literacy programme all Year 7 & 8 students will read as part of their English lesson,

they will have a reading lesson as part of their fortnightly learning programme in English

monitoring their reading progress and setting them new reading targets. We also expect them

to read for 20 minutes each night, as evidence shows that the students who do can often

increase their performance at GCSE by a whole grade!

The Year 7s will once again take part in ‘Word Millionaire’. Who can read a million words in this

school year? The words are counted for every Accelerated Reader Quiz passed, and last year we

had 3 Millionaires! We promise that the prizes will be well worth it...

The LRC is now hosting ‘Technology Tuesdays’ at Tuesday lunchtimes and after school until 4 pm. The aim of these sessions is currently for Year 7 only, to enable them to get to grips with their iPads, some of the apps and setting the apps up that they are most likely to use in school. Any parent/carer who feels they would like to come along after school and find out what their Year 7 should be doing with their iPads and get an understanding theirself, should email [email protected] to express their interest and book a date. Spaces for parents/carers will be limited to a small group at a time due to limited space and the sessions will work better in smaller groups.

The LRC is open 8:15am - 4:15pm for the use of ALL students. We hope to see you there!

Transitions Plus Activity Day On the last Friday in August, we set out in the minibus to Wide Horizons at Margaret MacMillan House in Wrotham for our annual activity day with some of our new Year 7's. We were very grateful it was a sunny and dry day as the week thus far had been rather a wet one! Andy and Harry were our instructors for the day and did a great job helping the students to problem solve and communicate effectively to solve the vari-ous tasks facing them. We began in two teams doing a selection of activities in the Hive Challenge and much fun was had by all, especially watching five boys trying to walk in time on planks like skis! A group see-saw task was next with considerable cooperation needed to achieve a balance for 10 seconds before they could break for lunch! In the afternoon we set off into the woods to try out the low ropes and tyre challenge with a short "trust" exercise where all but one of the students wore goggles to block their sight. Congratulations to Amy for leading them all injury free through the woods! Good pair and team work ensued and then again the goggles were donned for an-other trust experience. This time with the "sighted" person leading a partner around a rope course by giving clear and well timed (hopefully!) directions to avoid obstacles. The students had a great time and all returned to Longfield in good spirits if a little tired and muddy. We were impressed by the students excellent behaviour and willingness to have a go at anything asked of them. We look forward to seeing them face the challenge of Year 7 with equal success! Days

The transition between Primary and Secondary School is often seen as a stressful and difficult time, however Longfield Academy offers new Year 7s the opportunity to meet teachers and other students alike. Over the course of the two weeks students sampled the delights of Zorb balling, baking, Samba drumming and drama workshops with actor Femi Oyeniran.

Day trips to the cinema and Howletts Wild Animal Park were highly enjoyable, and allowed students to expand friendships and explore outdoors, despite the potential for a typical, British Summer downpour. A particular highlight of this was seeing how quickly the students made friends with each other, and listening to their various impressions of wild animals.

English teacher and Head Chef for the week Miss Williams commented, ‘It was particularly nice to see all of the groups from different schools integrating themselves and encouraging each other in every activity…’

The Summer School program has been running for two years now and has been a resounding success in easing the transition and assisting relaxing the pressure of coming to a new school. Longfield Academy is proud to run a successful Summer School and is already in the planning stages for making next years bigger and better than ever. Tr

Our Year 7 students, who joined Longfield Academy in September 2015, have made a great start to their academic career. During two weeks this summer over 140 of our new Year 7 students joined us during their summer break for the Transition Activity Weeks. The groups focused on developing team building skills, working in a new environment and having fun learning new skills. Each group showcased their work to parents and carers on the Friday of each week. Since starting on 1st September our Year 7 students have settled in very quickly and to quote one group, “it seems like we have always been here”. Our first day here at Longfield enables the students to spend some time in the morning getting to know their form tutors and the other Year 7s in their tutor groups. They then took part in a full day of learning and begun to acquire knowledge in specialist areas throughout the school. Our Year 7 students were asked to provide feedback on the transition programme that we provide, supporting students and families as they move from Primary school to Longfield Academy.

“When I joined LA in September I was welcomed by all and felt safe.”

“The taster events at Longfield were really enjoyable and I made lots of friends.”

“The Transition Activity week helped to feel more relaxed about the school.”

“I have enjoyed meeting my tutor group and the older students have looked out for me.”

“I have enjoyed my lessons as they are interesting.”

“I love using the iPads.”

“I have been learning about the Longfield Learner Attributes and how to use them in my classes.”

“The food in the Helix is amazing.”

Year 7

On the evening of the 16th of September Longfield Academy hosted its annual Celebration Evening.

This is a popular event on the calendar for staff and students as it gives us time to reflect on the achievement of our students during the previous year and celebrate this as a community.

On the evening we had 51 prize winners attend with their parents or carers who were entertained by staff on their tables throughout dinner. Then came the awards, after a short address from the Principals, they then began to hand out awards to students, these awards were, from making progress to Principals’ achievement awards. All student winners were invited onto the stage to receive their certificates, Bluewater vouchers and to photograph this special moment with the leaders of their colleges.

Overall the Academy played host to over 140 students, staff, parents and carers to celebrate the success the students had achieved. A fantastic evening was had by all with thanks and praise ringing out from all corners for what our students had achieved.

Year 7 Social Science visit to Eynsford and Lullingstone Roman Villa

Three colleges from Year 7 visited Eynsford and Lullingstone Roman Villa to carry out their humanities fieldwork in September. Students enjoyed investigating the ruins at the villa and completed traffic surveys and field sketches in Eynsford. Work was continued back in the academy and all students and teachers had a great day.

Year 8 Humanities

During term one, Year 8 students have been learning about the earth’s natural hazards. As part of their humanities homework, the students were tasked with creating their own volcano. They were allowed to use any materials in their design and the results have been amazing. We have seen volcanoes made from cake, rocks, papier-mache, felt, clay, tissue paper, cotton wool and foam. The humanities’ teachers have really enjoyed seeing these wonderful volcanoes and reading the homework booklets. The students have worked extremely hard to produce high quality and innovative designs; their effort and commitment is wonderful. It has also been a great opportunity for staff, other students and visitors to view and enjoy these high quality creations. Well done, Year 8.

Year 9 Food and Nutrition students are currently completing their entries for the Kent Cooks Competition. Within this they have to complete a two course meal of their choice. We have seen some real skills already. All Year 9 students will be entering and we wish them the best of luck and hopefully some of them may get through to the final.

Shakespeare's 'Measure for Measure' is one of Shakespeare's lesser known plays. Students from the Year 12 and 13 English literature groups set off to the Globe theatre on Tuesday 6th October with a basic knowledge of the story, and a serious threat of rain. Luckily, the rain stayed away and nothing disturbed the performance, except for a number of planes that flew overhead and occasionally drowned out the voice of Isabella, a would-be nun, as she pleaded with the cold-hearted Angelo to save her brother's life.

We stood in the yard, and experienced what it would be like to be a 'groundling'. Actors spilled into the yard before the performance began, interacting with the audience, and setting the scene of a city that has fallen into immoral and sleazy ways. At £5 the tickets were cheap, but you do need strong legs to stand for the whole 3 hour performance.

The play ended with a traditional Shakespearian dance, and we made our tired way back to Mansion House underground station for the return train journey to Longfield. Seeing the play will be helpful when the Year 12 group study the play in February for their English literature A Level. Po
