Building green is becoming a reality.Many people are realising the benefitsof creating sustainable buildings suitedto the climate and landscape in theirregion of Australia.

Most green buildings in Australia areprivate residences; there are very fewgreen public or commercial buildings.

However the new 60L Green Building inMelbourne, a four level office and retailspace developed by the Green BuildingPartnership, is setting high butachievable standards for othercommercial buildings to follow.

The Australian Conservation Foundation(ACF) contributed to the environmentalleadership in the development andimplementation of the 60L GreenBuilding’s environmental objectives andis now one of the principal tenants inthe greenest, commercially viable,office building in Australia.

ACF’s Green Office was designedby H2o architects to enable ACF topractice what it advocates -a sustainable future.

When deciding on furniture andmaterial fittings for its green office, ACFconsidered various approaches tominimising the ecological footprint ofthe fitout including:

• The sourcing of items that had animproved environmental performanceover standard products;

• The reuse of existing furniture andmaterials;

• The refurbishment of items.

ACF’s Green Office features materialssuch as walls made from wheat straw,recycled plastic joinery and flooringthat incorporates recycled corks in aPVC free product. Some of the chairsand workstations showcase recycledresin and timber from sustainablymanaged plantations; all products wereselected because they addressedsustainability in their design andmanufacture.

Almost all items and services listed inthis document were donated to ACF.ACF acknowledges the visionarysupport of the donors in creating aninnovative workplace that minimisesimpact on the environment.

From green offices sustainablecities grow.
