Why do we do this exercise?
The main aim of this exercise is that you get better connected in your aces project team, share your project vision(s) and that you have fun together!
How much time do you have!
Until 12.45 hours. At this time you have to be at the meeting point for the big group picture (nice weather: outside in the park next to the bridge; rain: in plenary).
Where are the stations?
You also get a map of the hotel where the locations of the stations are marked. If you still get lost, no problem – you will find many of the other aces teams in and around the hotel ready to help you!
What to do?
At various places in the hotel there are 9 different stations. All station activities help your team to be better connected and prepared for your project work. But you do not have to do all 9 stations – time is also too short to do them all! Do as many as you in the team wish and can manage and decide together which stations you want to go to.
BUT! You definitely have to go to station 1 – because we need a picture of your team!
AND: you have to start with the station you are right now! But except those two you can decide which and how many stations you want to do. (Obviously the teams starting at station 1 are done with the MUST-station!!)
Get connected … in your team
Station 1 (Sala 3 / Side A): Project Team photo (Remember: you HAVE TO pass by this one!)
A professional photographer awaits you to take a picture of your project team!
Station 2 (Sala 3 / Side B): We wish our project to be…
Together you paint/draw a picture illustrating how you wish your project to be. Everybody starts at the same time on one sheet of paper - without talking! - and slowly it will become one picture … without talking! A great chance for connecting your visions/ideas without words!
Station 3 (Sala 4 / Side A): Create solidarity with plasticine
Ready for working with your hands? Dig you fingers into plasticine and form solidarity – or something that represents an aspect of solidarity for you. First everybody for him/herself and then you share in your team what you see in the plasticine-objects … and perhaps you want to share stories of solidarity that you have personally experienced.
Station 4 (Plenary / Side A): The magic stick exercise
A real team cooperation exercise! As a team you need to bring a magic stick down to the floor with each of you having only 2 fingers holding it. You think it is easy? Try it out!
Station 5 (Sala 4 / Side B): Let’s dance to the aces-music
Do you know the aces song? Up for some music and movement? As a team learn the aces-song choreography. Great preparation for the party!
Station 6 (Plenary / Side B): The paper plane competition
Your team would like to win a prize for your incredibly great team paper plane combining creativity and technical understanding? – It needs to fly far AND be pretty!
Station 7 (Kamin Sala): What´s your story?
THE station to find out more about the colleagues in your project team. Make pairs and find out more about the other person (e.g. your three favorite places, your favorite food/drinks, I love this movie/TV-series..., I am really good at..., What makes me laugh… and/or whatever you are curious about). You can do several rounds in different pairs – take as much time as you wish.
Station 8 (Kamin Sala / Courtyard): Meet another team!
Are you curious to find out more about another project, another team? Go to this station and see if you meet another team there. Then you can also divide in students and teacher groups – and the students explain each other their projects and the teacher exchange about their projects.
Station 9 (Meeting point: Courtyard, back entrance of the hotel): A snapshot of Sarajevo
If you want to try out a challenging exercise with your team go for this one! You have to mingle with local people in order to arrange a photo, a very specific one. You should “arrange” a picture in which there are your team, one animal, one teenager and one adult living in Sarajevo and one typical sweet from Bosnia and Herzegovina. You first get all the “ingredients” (people, animal and sweet) and then you ask somebody to take a photo with one of your mobile phones. Send us the photo by email to [email protected] - we will upload it on the aces-Facebook page after the Kick-Off.

Take a step upwards!
Rules of the game:
1. Non-verbal exercise2. Role play3. Don’t reveal your role before the time comes
3 steps:
1. Getting into your role2. Experience how it is to live that role3. Sharing about the experience

• What is your everyday life like now? Where doyou socialise? What do you do in the morning,in the afternoon, in the evening?
Getting into your role…
• What sort of lifestyle do you have? Where doyou live? How much money do you earn eachmonth? What do you do in your leisure time? What you do in your holidays?
• What makes you happy and what are youafraid of?
If you would say “YES” – please, stand up:
#1: You and your family always have enoughmoney to meet your needs.
#2: You live in a decent place with a telephoneand television.#3: You are not teased or excluded because ofyour different appearance or disability.

#14: You can buy new clothes at least onceevery three months.#15: You can fall in love with the person of yourchoice.
#16: You have access to a computer and can usethe Internet.
Wow… that was exciting!
• Please, don’t reveal your roles yet!
• Sharing about the experience in two steps:1. In the whole group (15-20 min)2. Teachers and Students only groups (15-20 min)
• Follow the handout with guiding questions
Time to divide into two groups…
You are a 17-year-old Roma (Gypsy) girl who never finished primary school.
You are a 24-year-old refugee from Afghanistan.
You are the owner of a successful import-export company.
You are a disabled young man who can only move in a wheelchair.
You are a teacher in local primary school.
You are a retired worker from a factory that makes shoes.
You are the son of a Chinese immigrant who runs a successful fast food business.
You are a homeless young man, 27 years old.
You are an unemployed university graduate
waiting for the first opportunity to work.
You are the daughter of the American ambassador
to the country where you are now living.
Let’s talk about this experience!
We hope you had an interesting and exciting experience during the exercise. Now you are allowed
to talk, but please DO NOT reveal your roles to the others yet! This comes later during the sharing.
The sharing will happen in two steps. In the first part, we ask you to share your experience in the
whole group (approximately 15-20 minutes). In the second part we will ask you to divide into
teachers’ and students’ groups and continue sharing with your peers (another 15-20 minutes).
Find the guiding questions for both steps below. Please, keep an eye on the time.
Step1. Sharing in the whole group
- How did you feel about standing up – or staying seated?
- What was surprising or frustrating for you?
- For those who stood up often: At what point did you begin to notice that others are not
standing up as often as you do?
- For the ones who stood up the least: What were you thinking?
- Can you guess each other's roles? (you may reveal your roles now)
- How easy or difficult was it to play the different roles? How did you imagine what the person
you were playing was like?
- How much this experience reflects reality in your communities or your schools? Are there
groups who would “stand up more often” and others who would “stand up less often” in your
reality?
- How do you deal with such inequalities in your context?
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Step2a. Questions for the teachers’ group
We all have experiences with being in need of solidarity or being in the position to show our
solidarity…
- Share a personal story about experiencing solidarity in your context or the story when
solidarity was needed but somehow you felt “blocked” to express it.
- Why sometimes it is difficult to show solidarity with people in need?
- What is the responsibility of teachers (and education in general) in addressing these
issues? What can teachers do?
Step2b. Questions for the students’ group
We all have experiences with being in need for solidarity or being in the position to show our
solidarity…
- Share a personal story when other people showed solidarity with you or when you have
expressed solidarity with other people.
- Why sometimes it is difficult to show solidarity with people in need?
- What can you as students do to encourage others and to enhance more solidarity amongst
your peers?

Bill Bailey
Coming together is a beginning; keepingtogether is progress; workingtogether is success.
Henry Ford
There are no problems we cannot solvetogether, and very few that we cansolve alone.

BEST OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR STUDENTS How can I / we contribute to *communication between all students involved *what is the most horrible team you can think of… - and what are ways to be not horrible
BEST OF INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION FOR TEACHERS *How are decision taken in our team? - Dos and Don'ts *How are responsibilities and tasks divided between the partner schools? Task: Who? When? *What is the most horrible communication you can think of - and what are ways to be not horrible?
FUNDRAISING & PR FOR STUDENTS Fundraising: If you take a look at the different fundraising ideas in the Handbook - which could be realistic to do in your project? Design an example. Handbook p. 33-34, also 43 PR: Choose one "PR method" from the Handbook and describe how you would do it. Handbook p. 75/76
FUNDRAISING & PR FOR TEACHERS Exchange your plans on *Fundraising *PR and write down the best of your ideas and experiences
TROUBLESHOOTING FOR STUDENTS 1) You are invited to plan activities, you share them with your teachers. In the end, none of your ideas are part of the activities-plan. How will you react?
2) Your parents changed their minds and do not want to let you travel to the partner school visit anymore. What will you do? 3) It is very hard for you to understand communication in another language during the partner school visit. Nobody realizes this. What can you do? 4) Some students in your class express strong negative opinions towards the country, the partner school is coming from. How will you react?
TROUBLESHOOTING FOR TEACHERS 1) One project group / teacher does not react to e-mails or phone calls, what to do?
2) You find out, that your colleague has trouble with her own headmaster concerning the project, what to do? 3) You have no common language to communicate. What will you do? 4) You find out, that your teams have different approaches on student involvement. How will you solve this? 5) You find yourself having „ACES-responsibility" for EVERYTHING in your school - too much for „one shoulder“. What will you do? 6) You have conflicts with the parents, they do not want their children to travel anymore. How to solve this? 7) You realize, that money is not enough to do, what you planned. What are your strategies?
Next Steps !1. Looking back at the workshops today and collecting the learning:
Take some time in your project team to collect impressions from your workshop and the Project Lab today. Share these three points:
• The two workshop I participated in today • One personal learning for me today • One important aspect we should keep in mind for our work together
! Take max. 10 min !2. Looking ahead to your project work at home:
What are your next steps and meetings? Refer to your application and workplan. Do you need to make any changes? (Please include this point: Telling the people at home about the conference: Students tell students, teachers tell colleagues. When and how?) !
!! Try to finish in 30 minutes.
What? When? Who? Comments…
