From William Seigh:President's Message...

The fall semester was just beginningand a student stopped me beforeclasses even met to share hisenthusiastic reflections about the2013 ACDFA conference he attendedand to ask all about the 2014conference. His vivid memories of last year's concerts, classes, feedback, and friendships fed his whole-hearted,immediate desire to attend the next one - still half a yearaway! Websites are up, eleven regional conferences are readyto go, and there are over 5,000 students, faculty andmusicians who are also anticipating, or about to discover, thejoyful dancing found in the ACDFA conference experience. How fortunate we are that we get to come together in thisway! Dancing with old friends and new friends, sharingscholarship, choreography, performances, and classes. This isACDFA's 41st year of creating a rich community of artists, making memories, and moving dance forward; I am honoredto be president of this amazing association. Like myenthusiastic student, I can't wait to come together with you indance.

2013 - A Banner Year

Did you have cake at yourConference? If so, it wasmost likely in celebrationof ACDFA's 40th Birthday.Amidst a flurry beautifullyorganized events thatheralded the occasion: aretrospective film, scrollshighlighting adjudicatorsfrom years gone by,memorabilia, and much, much more, anyone whoparticipated in aconference this year couldnot help but reflect uponhow much our organizationhas grown.

It is the collective belief inwhat we do and the powerof what we do that is thesource of all that has beenwonderful since 1973.

NAME CHANGE FOR OUR ASSOCIATION?

On September 10, 2013, a letter was sent to the ACDFAmembership about a recommendation by the Board ofDirectors to change the name of our association from"American College Dance Festival Association" (ACDFA) to"American College Dance Association" (ACDA). The question ofa name change was discussed during the 2013 regionalconference membership meetings. Responding to thefeedback from these meetings and building on the valuableand forward-looking 2011 revision of the ACDFA MissionStatement, the Board of Directors voted to recommend thename change. The pros and cons of this recommendation were presented inthe September letter. Click here to read the letter. We areasking ACDFA members and all dancers and teachers whovalue the rich experience of our annual regional conferencesand biennial national festivals to consider the benefits andramifications of this name change. Please share your thoughtsabout the Board recommendation with your school's ACDFArepresentative. A ballot will be emailed to the voting membership--eachmember school's representative and individual and lifetimemembers-- on October 21, 2013 with a November 4thdeadline. A Call to FacultyTeaching at a Conference: Do What You Do Best! Our regional conferences provide dancers the opportunityto explore dance forms from around the world, expandcontemporary vocabulary, garner new perspectives whilethey stand at the barre, learn about partnering, lightingdesign, composition, history; the list is endless. Giftedfaculty from throughout the country share their passionand inspiration with students. But, do they have theopportunity to learn about your research? Yourexperiences? Your unique perspective on politics anddance, the environment and dance, or religion and dance?Your assessment of dance in Liberal Arts? Your work on theevolution of Flamenco? Each year, our surveys reveal that students love to move, but they are also hungry for the theoretical. They want toknow what lies outside of the studio. They crave intimateunderstanding of the world they are about to explorewithout you. Why not take the plunge and offer a class ortwo that doesn't rely on Marley and musicians? Whetheryou are a graduate student, adjunct faculty, full-professor,or guest artist, you have access to insight and quite possiblya new spark for our college dancers who are looking formore doorways into our form. Consider what it is you might want to share at yourconference. Adding more layers will only create anenvironment that not only energizes students' bodies, butcharges their minds with stimulating philosophy and historythat only you can provide. Faculty also are hungry for new information andapproaches and for opportunities to discuss bothphilosophical and practical aspects of dance in highereducation. You might also consider offering a workshop forfaculty only, facilitating a discussion, organizing aroundtable. You can indicate interest in teaching starting on October9th when conference registration opens. Specific class,

A Message from our Past President...

Generosity and passion... in supersizedabundance: these are two key things Itake away from my four years as Presidentof ACDFA. How lucky we are that ourmembers are deeply passionate about --and truly love - their art form. And howfortunate that our members are endlesslygenerous with their time, energy andhonesty in serving ACDFA as hosts, boardmembers and advocates, to make thatpassion shine brightly in higher education. Traveling to many of our regions in recent years I observe thatdance artists and scholars always share a common optimisticbelief: that the art of dance is a lens through which toexamine the human soul. And that as artists we have the rightand responsibility to help others share in that. I am enjoyingthis current term as Past President as a time of reflection andadvocacy, confident that the energy of ACDFA will continue tobuild. Thank you members and friends, for the passion youshare with your students, faculty and administrators. Andthank you all for your generosity in making ACDFA everstronger in its mission.
