AC/DC-You Shook Me All Night Long Music Video Analysis.

• In the music video for ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ by AC/DC the narrative is distinguished from the performance as it is in black and white where the performance is in colour. There are many instances of humor in the narrative, for example: a man sitting in a bathtub. This ties in with AC/DC’s brand identity. The performance sections also maintain the bands brand identity by giving an impression of their energetic and chaotic live shows as they feature very quick, sharp cuts.

• The song of course has sexual connotations and the visuals back this up. For example: at around 0:35 when lead singer Brian Johnson sings ‘the best damn woman that I’ve ever seen’ we see a shot of a woman and the camera pans down to a close up of her breasts (top left). This is also an example of the video illustrating the music and is also a convention of the genre. Similarly at around 1:50 when we hear the start of the chorus: ‘you shook me all night long’ we see a woman wearing highly suggestive clothes riding a ‘bucking bronco’.

• The narrative elements of the video are presented in black and white which could be considered an intertextual reference to classic films such as Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’.

• There are many close ups of the members of the band, for example; lead singer, Brian Johnson (top left) and rhythm guitarist Angus Young (bottom left). This helps to meet the demand of the record label.

• A huge part of AC/DC’s brand identity is the school boy outfits that they wear when they perform live. Members of the band can be seen wearing such outfits both in the performance and the narrative sections of the video, again this enhances their brand identity.

• There is an example of disjuncture at around 1:20 when one of the band members can be seen walking in to a chemist a buying what appears to be drugs. This completely ignores the lyrics: ‘Wanted no applause, it's just another course made a meal outta me and come back for more’.

• There are several references to the notion of ‘looking’. For example; the stage on which the band is performing and the numerous close ups of women.
