724 ACCUMULATORS AC&R VERTICAL SUCTION ACCUMULATORS Optional: 1-in. FPT con- nection is available on S-7700 series for in of an S-9400-1 type Liquid Level Switch. Selection of a suction line accumulator should be made on the basis of the following three capabilities. The accumulator should have an adequate liquid holding capacity, which can vary with the system. Normally this should not be less than 50% of the system charge. If possible this value should be checked based on actual tests. A second consideration should be the ability of the accumulator to perform without adding excessive pres- sure drop to the system. The recommended maximum tonnages shown in the following tables are based on a pressure drop equivalent to 1/2° F. These ratings are those of the accumulator, based on oil return through the accumulator, and will be modified by the length of the suction line and compressor displacement. Finally an accumulator should have the capability of returning liquid at the proper rate and under a range of load conditions. Accumulators should have a Heat Element added on low temperature applications (0° F and below) such as the S-9111 or S-9112 to help boil off liquid refrigerant and raise the oil temperature to help facilitate oil flow. S-7700 Series HE: Heat Exchanger models available by ordering with an HE suffix (i.e. S-7065HE). Heat Exchanger models feature a boil out coil to boil off liquid refrigerant in the bottom of the accumulator. The ODS connection size of the boil out coil is shown in Column E. Mufflers have internal baffles designed for minimum pressure drop. These baffles change the velocity of the discharge gasses passing through the muffler. This results in a dampening effect on high frequency sound waves on high speed compressors. Pulsating waves are also muffled in both low speed and high speed compressors.

Mufflers are sized to the discharge line of the compressor.

ACCUMULATORS

PARKER STEEL SUCTION LINE ACCUMULATORS"U" Tube Style Accumulators

The Parker “U” tube accumulator design is a result of extensive laboratory testing plus detailed investigation of the various accumulators currentlyavailable. It takes into account all of the requirements essential for heat pump applications, including safe holding volume (relative to the system’s total charge), protected flow control for positive refrigerant and oil return, and minimum pressure drop across the accumulator.

Parker offers standard accumulator models designed for application on heat pump and refrigeration systems from 1/4 through 12 tons. Liquid refrigerant holding requirements of suction accumulator may vary by application. Because of the diversity in heat pump systems, accumulator capacityselection should be determined by actual testing. Consult Parker forassistance if required.

Key Features & Benefits

• Solid copper connections.

• “U” tube design for maximum flow of refrigerant and minimum oilentrapment.

• Inlet flow deflector guides refrigerant toward wall for smooth tangential flow and gradual expansion.

• “U” tube entrance is positioned behind the inlet flow deflector to prevent unwanted liquid refrigerant from entering and damaging compressor.

• Metering orifice matched to system capacity assures optimum liquid refrigerant and oil flow back to compressor.

• Protective screen and orifice assembly on “U” tube protects againstforeign particles and contaminants affecting metering function.

• Fittings and “U” tube are matched to accumulator holding capacity and total system charge for minimum pressure drop and maximum refrigerant flow.

LIQUID REFRIGERANT RECEIVERS

AC&R LIQUID REFRIGERANT RECEIVERSReceivers should be selected based on the operating charge for all system com-ponents, including the liquid lines. It is usual to add a small percentage to cover the refrigerant in long runs of suction and discharge lines, etc. It is essential that the maximum operating charge be determined, e.g., winter charge in air cooled condenser having flooded head pressure control, this being much greater than the normal summer charge.

OIL SEPARATORS

AC&R HELICAL OIL SEPARATORSHelical Oil Separators: A new twist from AC&R Components Inc., the leader in Oil Control Systems, puts oil separator efficiency at a new high. The helical oil separator features a centrifugal flow path achieving approximately 99% efficiency of oil separation with low pressure drop. Testing by an independent laboratory found that only .006% oil by volume was being discharged into the system after leaving a helical oil separator.

How the Helical Oil Separator functions: Upon separator entry, refrigerant gas containing oil in aerosol form, encounters the lead-ing edge of the helical flighting. The gas/oil mixture is centrifugally forced along the spiral path of the helix, causing heavier oil parti-cles to spin to the perimeter, where impingement with a screen layer occurs. The screen layer serves dual functions as an oil stripping and draining medium. Separated oil flows downward along the boundary of the shell through a baffle and into the oil collection area at the bottom of the separator. The specially engineered baffle isolates the oil collection area and eliminates oil

reentrainment by preventing turbulence. Virtually oil-free refriger-ant gas exits through a fitting just below the lower edge of the heli-cal flighting. A float activated oil return valve allows the captured oil to return to the crankcase or oil reservoir, thereby completing the oil circuit. Our Patented Mechanical Design offers high oil sep-aration efficiency, plus the following advantages not found in a Coalescing Oil Separator:

• Low pressure drop throughout the entire range of velocities found in a refrigeration system.

• No clogging elements because of too much oil in the system.

• No oil blow-out at start-up from oil left in a coalescing element.

Oil can be drained from the separator when necessary through a 1/8-in. NPT fitting at the bottom of the separator.

HOW TO CALCULATE DISCHARGE CFM (DCFM)

Example: 50 ton R-22 system

-25° F Evaporator Temp.

115° F Condensing Temp.

From the R-22 DCFM Chart, follow the -25° F evaporator tempera-ture line to the intersection of the 115° F condensing temperature line. Extend a line horizontally from this point to the DCFM/tonfactor. Multiply the DCFM/ton factor by the total tonnage to calcu-late the total DCFM.

How the Conventional Oil Separator functions: Refrigerant gas from the compressor containing oil in aerosol form enters the sep-arator and passes through the inlet baffling. As it passes through the inlet screen, the fine particles collide with one another and form heavier particles that impinge on the surface of the shell wall. The gas then passes through the outlet screen where there is a

final separation. The oil free gas escapes through the outlet fitting and goes to the condenser. The separated oil drips to the bottom of the separator where a float operated needle valve returns the oil to the crankcase or oil reservoir in the same way as the Helical Oil Separator.

OIL SEPARATORS ACCESSORIES

AC&R HEAT ELEMENTS

Heat elements add heat to oil separators located in low ambient temperatures or in low temperature applications, to prevent con-densation of refrigerant vapor in the vessel.

Heat elements add heat to oil separators to prevent migration of refrigerant to the vessel during both the running and the off cycles of the compressor. 4-in. diameter heat band can also be installed on oil sump of S-1900 Series oil separators.

Heat elements add heat to suction line accumulators to keep the oil warm permitting oil return to the compressor on low tempera-ture application.

OIL LEVEL REGULATORS

AC&R OIL LEVEL REGULATORSThe oil level regulator controls the oil level in the compressor crankcase with a float operated valve.

Oil level regulators are designed to attach directly to the sight glass housing on compressor crankcases. Adapter kits are avail-able for compressors that have a different sight glass configura-tion. The sight glass from the compressor or supplied with an adapter kit, bolts to the second regulator flange for visual obser-vation of the oil level.

The oil supply line from the reservoir is connected to the 3/8-in. flare fitting on top of the regulator.

These regulators feature a 3/8-in. flare equalization connection on the side of the regulator that allows the crankcases to be

interconnected. This maintains the same pressure in all of the crankcases including any compressor that is running. This pre-vents running compressor(s) from siphoning the oil out of the idle compressor(s).

The 3/8-in. flare equalization connection is at the half sight glass level. It helps prevent over filling of the regulators caused by oil returning down the suction line to an idle compressor. If a regula-tor fills up to a half sight glass, the oil will be picked up by the equalization connection and sent to the running compressor crankcase.

S-9010 FIXED LEVEL REGULATORThe S-9010 regulator maintains the oil level in the compressor crankcase at 3/8-in. sight glass. The S-9010 maintains the level at any pressure differential between 5 and 30 psi.The S-9010 oil level regulator is designed to bolt directly to the 3 bolt sight glass hous-ing found on many compressor crankcases.Do not use on Satellite Compressor.

P/N: S-9010

S-9090 ADJUSTABLE REGULATOROne oil level regulator for all applicationsThe S-9090 regulator allows the oil level in the compressor crankcase to be maintained at any level between 1/4 and 1/2 sight glass. The S-9090 maintains the level at any pressure differential between 5 and 90 psi. If the oil level in the crankcase is too high or too low, the level can be adjusted by turning the adjustment screw on top of the regulator. This can be done while the system is in operation. Our exclusive design eliminates the need of shutting down the system and disconnecting the oil feed lines in order to adjust the regulator.

S-9130 ADJUSTABLE REGULATOR

The S-9130 regulator allows the oil level in the compressor crankcase to be main-tained at any level between 1/4 and 1/2 sight glass.

The S-9130 maintains the level at any pressure differential between 5 and 90 psi.

735

OIL CONTROL SYSTEMS

AC & R OIL RESERVOIRHOW IT WORKS

A reserve of oil is necessary for the operation of the system. The oil reservoir is the holding vessel for this stand-by oil. It has two sight glass ports on the shell to observe the oil level inside the vessel. Oil is fed into the oil reservoir by the oil separator.

The valve on the top of the oil reservoir automatically receives oil from the oil separator (open position). To add oil to the oil reservoir manually, close the valve and fill the oil reservoir through the 1/4-in. flare connection on the side of the valve. Open valve after filling.

The valve on the bottom of the oil reservoir is the distribution valve to the oil level regulators (open position). To remove oil from the oil reservoir, close the valve and use the 1/4-in. flare connection on the side of the valve to drain the oil out. Open valve after draining.

HOW TO INSTALL

Whenever possible, the oil reservoir should be mounted above the oil level regulators for gravity feed of oil. It can be realized that high pressure from the high side returns with the oil from the oil separator to the reservoir. In a period of time, enough pressure could build up to adversely affect the float and needle assembly in the oil level regulator. For protection, a vent line is installed from the top of the oil reservoir (a fitting is provided) back to the low pressure suction line. This line permits the pressure in the oil res-ervoir to be approximately the same as the pressure in the suction line and the crankcases of the compressors. Oil in the oil reservoir feeds down through the 3/8-in. and 1/4-in. OD tubing and keeps the oil level regulators supplied with oil.

NEW SYSTEM STARTUP

On system startup of a new parallel system, oil should be added to the oil reservoir to the upper sight glass port, NOT ABOVE IT It is commonly accepted that in a new refrigeration system, some oil will be absorbed by the refrigerant as the system becomes bal-anced out. After two hours of operation, the oil reservoir, if neces-sary should again be filled to the upper sight glass and also after two days, by which time the entire refrigeration system should be balanced out. Then the oil reservoir must be observed on each service call. No oil should be added again until the oil level falls below the lower sight glass port.

EXISTING SYSTEM STARTUP

When installing this oil control system, on a parallel system that has been in operation for some time, the amount of oil should be added cautiously. With the efficiency of the new oil separator, the oil return could likely be sufficient to fill the oil reservoir. So fill the oil reservoir to the lower sight glass port only. Observe for one day. After the second day, if the oil level has not risen to the upper sight glass, add oil. If the oil level has risen above the upper sight glass port, remove the excess oil from the oil reservoir.
