Bauer Professor of Accounting Kaye Newberry is an expert on corporate taxation and academic adviser to the U.S. Treasury Department.

Department chair Gerald Lobo, who holds the Arthur Andersen Chair in Accounting, has several papers

forthcoming in noted academic journals, including “Institutional Monitoring through Shareholder Litigation,” co-written with Agnes Cheng, Henry Huang and Yinghua Li, for the Journal of Financial Economics, “Discretionary Accrual Changes Following the Sarbanes-Oxley Act: Evidence from Canadian Companies,” co-written with Jian Zhou, for the Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance, “Corporate Life Cycle and CEO Stock Options Grants,” co-written with Kiridaran Kanagaretnam and Emad Mohammad, for the Journal of Business Ethics, and “Determinants and Accounting Consequences of Forming a Governance Committee,” co-written with Huang and Zhou, for Corporate Governance: An International Review.

In addition, Lobo published “Is the Market Valuation of Banks’ Loan Loss Provision Conditional on Auditor Reputation?” with Kanagaretnam and Gopal Krishnan in the Journal of Banking and Finance in June. He also presented papers at the American Accounting Association National Meeting in August, the Academy of International Business Annual Meeting in June, the European Accounting Association Annual Congress in May and the Financial Management Association Annual Meeting in October.

A study on backdating stock options by Associate Professor Scott Whisenant and Visiting Scholar Rick Edelson received national attention in August when The Wall Street Journal cited the paper in an article in its Aug. 18 issue. The researchers found that 141 companies were likely to have improperly backdated stock options, most of which had not been caught by regulators or had not admitted doing so.

Associate Professor Janet Meade published “Overtime Pay Requirements for Salaried Employees” in The CPA Journal in July and “When Clients Leave, Learn” in the CPA Practice Management Forum in June.

A student team from UH Bauer was one of six chosen to advance to the finals of the KPMG/ALPFA National Case Study Competition among 26 in the regional competition. Team members included MS Accountancy candidate Raquel Rodriguez, accounting junior Jeffrey Leal, accounting senior Florentino (Tino) Reyes, accounting junior Wilbert Cadiz and accounting sophomore Jose Meras. Clinical Professor and Director of Accounting Programs Michael Newman was the team’s faculty advisor, and John Rappazzo served as KPMG advisor.

In October, 80 accounting students from UH Bauer participated in the PricewaterhouseCoopers xTAX extreme games. All 16 teams were given a case study involving the hypothetical Dutanese Business Council’s healthcare dilemma. Each team was given two weeks to prepare a solution to be presented before a panel of four PwC judges, including Paul Peacock (’81), Simon Tait, Brian Yarbrough and Debra Sandoval.

The first place team consisted of junior Benjamin Cohen-Korzrock, junior Andrew Conachey, sophomore Nina Shoaee, junior Katherine Welch and sophomore Nick Larralde, while the second place team included senior Willie Franklin, junior Amy Demmler, sophomore Melissa Hernandez, sophomore Zahra Usmani and junior Sarayu Sundari. Clinical Professor and Director of Accounting Programs Michael Newman, along

with Clinical Assistant Professor Ron Lazer, served as faculty advisors to the teams.

Four accounting juniors (C) — Hitee Bhasin, Phi Phi Huynh, Evan Leung and Sarayu Sundar — competed in the Association of Government Accountants (AGA)’s Third Government Finance Case Challenge in October, collaboratively constructing a four-page Citizen-Centric Report for a U.S. city. The two highest scoring teams will present their finalized solutions before a panel of federal, state and local government leaders as well as AGA’s private sector corporate partners and CFOs, in February. Clinical Professor and Director of Accounting Programs Michael Newman and Associate Professor Saleha Khumawala are faculty advisors to the team.

A team of graduate students (D) and another team of undergraduates participated in the Eighth Annual Deloitte Tax Case Study competition held in October. The graduate team consisted of Veronica L. Sanchez, Raquel Rodriguez, Lihong Ke and Michael Welch, all MS Accountancy students.

Accounting seniors Steven Gokeler, Wilbert Cadiz and Florentino (Tino) Reyes, along with accounting juniors Jeffrey Leal and Andrew Conachey, were on the undergraduate team.

Assistant Professor Christo Karuna was an invited discussant at the Review of Accounting Studies Conference held in the Netherlands in October for his paper titled “The Impacts of Product Market Competition on the Quantity and Quality of Voluntary Disclosures,” which won the best paper award.

Karuna also gave workshops and presented research papers at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University in November and the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto in September. He was an invited discussant and presented “Industry Product Market Competition and Internal Monitoring Mechanisms” and “CEO Reputation and Internal Corporate Government” in August at the Management Accounting Section and Financial Accounting and Reporting Section at the American Accounting Association Annual Conference. accepted for presentation at the mid-year conference of the 2010 Management Accounting Section Research and Case Conference and Doctoral Colloquium of the American Accounting Association, held in Seattle in January.

Karuna was one of two new faculty members in the Department of Accountancy & Taxation this fall. He received his Ph.D. in accounting from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan, and his research interests include corporate governance, managerial performance evaluation and executive compensation. Assistant Professor Jinyoung Park Wynn also joined the department faculty. She received her Ph.D. in accounting from Purdue University, and her research interests include financial reporting, corporate governance and capital market.

Accounting senior Lucas Evers (E) was named the 2009 Homecoming King during the UH football game against SMU on Oct. 24. Evers represented the university during a week-long series of homecoming events, which included a private lunch with President Renu Khator. Evers was selected for his academic record, his campus involvement and his dedication to the University. Marketing senior Wayne Bailey and finance

senior Kaine Hampton were also elected to the 10-person homecoming court.

ConocoPhillips awarded Clinical Assistant Professor James Stinson, Director of the Professional Program in Accounting, a $25,000 grant to be used during the 2009-2010 school year to support student and faculty development. ConocoPhillips awards grants to a select number of faculty each year as a part of the ConocoPhillips Faculty Sponsorship Program. The company presented the award to Stinson at a meeting of Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting student organization he advises.

Students and faculty from the Department of Accountancy & Taxation (F) attended the 2009 Institute of Internal Auditors Internal Auditing Education Partnership (IAEP) Leadership and Networking Retreat held on the University of Texas at Dallas campus in October. Approximately 100-200 students, educators and practitioners attended the event, sponsored by Deloitte and KPMG, and participated in workshops, competitions and networking activities. Other schools represented at the retreat included University of North Texas, University of Texas, DePaul University and other national and international universities.

Bauer College was featured in The Princeton Review’s latest guide to the country’s best business schools. The Best 302 Business Schools surveyed 19,000 students in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and

included two-page profiles of the best business schools in the country. A summary of Bauer highlights reported by students includes a strong academic focus on the energy industry, friendly students, a good peer network, cutting-edge classes and a great metropolitan setting. Students also lauded the high caliber of Bauer faculty, the value of non-classroom events like an annual Leadership and Ethics Week, and the level of support from the Rockwell Career Center and other UH Bauer resources.

Strategic Financial Group and parent company MassMutual have lent their name to the high visibility video wall in the lobby of Melcher Hall, now branded the Strategic Financial Group News Center. The plasma screens in the News Center display important announcements and news to the thousands of students who pass through the building each day. Representatives from Bauer College celebrated the partnership with leadership from SFG and MassMutual during a reception in September.

Bauer College re-launched its Distinguished Leaders Series in October with an energy focus. Sponsored by Sequent Energy Management, the DLS featured two of the country’s foremost energy experts as guest speakers — Gal Luft, the executive director of the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security (IAGS) and John W. Somerhalder II, who is chairman, president and CEO of AGL Resources.

The Bauer College Alumni Association held several successful events over the fall semester, including its monthly breakfast networking series, sponsored by James E. Bashaw & Co., which hosted speakers including Houston Dynamo President and General Manager Oliver Luck, US Oncology President and CEO Bruce Broussard (MBA ’89) and Houston Texans President Jamey Rootes.

The BCAA also held its annual meeting in August, which boasted record-setting attendance along with presentations to honor the college’s Golden Cougars, a group of alumni who attended Bauer in the 1940s and 50s, along with outgoing Dean’s Executive Board chairman John McNabb and a group of employees from China National Petroleum Corporation who were in Houston to receive their Global Energy MBA degrees from Bauer.

► Supply chain senior Sean McFarlin was the recipient of the Joe W. Martin Scholarship Endowment. Joe Martin (’76), an alumnus of the UH chapter of the Sigma Chi fraternity, awards the scholarship annually to a Sigma Chi member and Bauer student who maintains excellent grades and stays active in student organizations. This is McFarlin’s second year to receive the honor.

► Assistant Dean for Career Services at the Rockwell Career Center and longtime tri-athlete Jamie Belinne represented Team USA in the International Triathlon Union (ITU) Long Distance Triathlon World Championships in Perth, Australia. Belinne was invited to join Team USA 2009 after finishing Top Ten in her age group in a national championship triathlon last year. Teams from more than 20 countries traveled to Australia to compete in the race, and Belinne finished 36th in her age group world-wide.

The 2009 University of Houston football season marked the launch of the Bauer Business Leaders Program, a joint effort between the UH Bauer College of Business and UH Football to connect student athletes with prominent Houston business leaders. Each Cougar home game featured two honorary guest sideline coaches who participated in all pre-game and game time activities.

Sideline coaches included Mike Linn, chairman and CEO of LINN Energy; Bradley Hutchinson, Barclays Capital management director of upstream coverage; Peter Tumminello, executive vice president of business development and support for Sequent Energy Management; C. Gregory Harper (MBA ’97), senior vice president and group president of CenterPoint Energy Pipelines and Field Services; John T.

McNabb II, Growth Capital Partners chairman; L.R. “Robin” French, FEC Holdings founder and co-owner; Randy Giles, CEO for UnitedHealthcare; Richard G. Bauer students and alumni showed strong support for UH Athletics this year in what has been said to be the most remarkable season in Cougar football history. The Bauer College Alumni Association hosted droves of fans at the Bauer Pavilion while student organizations rallied for the Coogs during pre-game tailgating outside of Robertson Stadium.
