Station 1
Queensland Rail is committed to providing accessible rail services for all customers. This Station Access Guide has been developed to help customers with a wide variety of travelling requirements to enjoy a stress free journey.
Accessing Citytrain stationsQueensland Rail currently has a number of stations that are classed as ‘independently accessible’, which means customers can independently enter a station, access a platform and travel between platforms via an accessible ramp, pathway or lift, without having to use stairs.
At our ‘assisted access’ stations, customers may require some assistance. For instance, these stations may have a steep ramp or a rail crossing to negotiate. Customers using mobility aids or who have difficulties with walking may therefore want to be accompanied by a travelling companion when accessing these stations.
Finally, some stations may only offer access via stairs.
The information contained in this Station Access Guide is effective February 2019. Please visit queenslandrail.com.au/easyaccess for the most up-to-date information.

Using the ramp to board a trainIf you require use of the ramp to board a train, please wait at the assisted boarding point prior to the arrival of the train and let staff know that you require use of the ramp.
When the train arrives, please tell staff your destination station and make use of the allocated spaces and priority seating when onboard the
train. At your destination station, wait for staff to deploy the ramp before disembarking.
Assisted boarding pointAt Queensland Rail stations, the assisted boarding point is indicated by the international symbol of accessibility; a white wheelchair on a blue background.
In most cases, the symbol indicating the assisted boarding point is in the middle of the platform. To assist customers with a vision impairment, it will often be on a mat with a raised tactile surface.
At many stations, the assisted boarding point is located on a higher section of the platform, enabling easier access to the train from the platform for people who have difficulties negotiating a step.
If you require boarding assistance, please wait at the assisted boarding point prior to the arrival of the train.
Please then advise the guard or customer service staff what type of assistance is necessary. For example, some people may require the portable boarding ramp.
The assisted boarding point can be utilised by any customer and is not just for those using mobility aids.
Travelling on a new trainQueensland Rail will continue to provide access for customers on any Citytrain service through the use of the portable boarding ramp and the assisted boarding point.
There is no need for customers requiring boarding assistance to change where they wait or know what type of train they will be boarding.
If the next service is a new train, customer service staff on the platform may provide boarding assistance in the middle of the platform.
Alternatively, the guard on the new train may assist you to board. For all services, please wait in the middle of the platform.
If you need to contact us, please use the station help phone, the onboard emergency help button or text only 0428 774 636

Hearing loopsIncreasingly, Queensland Rail is installing hearing loops at stations to assist customers who are hard of hearing to access information about train arrivals and departures.
Station ticket counters that have hearing loops installed display the international symbol for deafness.
Accessible customer informationQueensland Rail provides information at stations in a variety of formats.
Typically, an audible station announcement is made two minutes before a train arrives, to advise customers of the train’s destination and which platform to go to. Another station announcement is made as the train arrives at the platform, to confirm these details.
Many stations have visual information provided on either liquid crystal display (LCD) screens or other electronic displays. These screens show the service departure time, final destination and which platform to go to.
Some stations also have timetable consoles that provide both audible and visual information. By pressing a button, the consoles provide details about the next inbound and outbound train stopping at the station. These consoles have a beeping tone to assist people with a vision impairment to locate them.
Queensland Rail is progressively upgrading accessible signage at stations. The accessible signs have contrasting colours, large, raised text, pictograms and Braille.
Timetable information is available online by visiting translink.com.au and can also be provided by Queensland Rail Customer Service staff.
To use the system, please indicate that you require the hearing loop and staff will activate it. The hearing loop will output the Queensland Rail station officer’s voice so that a customer’s hearing aid can pick up the signal within approximately 60 centimetres of the counter.
At some stations, hearing loops are also installed at designated waiting areas on platforms. These locations are identified by the same international symbol for deafness. These systems output the public address system (PA) announcements to the hearing loop, provided that the customer is within the designated area. The platform hearing loops are automatically activated whenever there is a PA announcement to that platform.
Both ticket counter and platform hearing loops are audio-frequency induction hearing loops. To use these loops, customers must have
hearing aids that have the telecoil (or T-switch) facility and the T-switch must be “on” for it to work.

Safety and accessibilityMost stations across the Citytrain network have tactile indicators installed along the length of platform edges. In most cases, these are yellow to highlight the ‘stand behind the yellow line’ safety message.
The tactile indicators have raised circles to denote a ‘hazard’ or ‘warning’ and assist people with a vision impairment in locating where it is safe to walk. Selectedstations also provide ‘directional’ tactile indicators on the platform, to guide people with vision impairment to the entrance and exit of each platform, as well as the timetable console, and emergency and disability assistance help phone.
If there is an emergency or if you have a disability and require assistance, Queensland Rail can be contacted in the following ways:
• Use the emergency and disability assistance help phone. These phones are installed on consoles at all stations and in some car parks. By pressing the intercom button, customers can directly access assistance when required. At many stations, the console is situated on the platform within the area covered by the hearing loop and will have raised text, pictograms and Braille to assist people with a sensory impairment.
• Call 13 16 17 or text only 0428 774 636A Queensland Rail Customer Communications Officer will respond promptly to your request for train and platform assistance, station accessibility or timetable information. The text messaging service provides an alternative means of communicating with Queensland Rail staff and may be particularly useful for people who are deaf or hard of hearing.
Keep these numbers handy when planning a journey or travelling on the Citytrain network.
