Dear Readers,

When I walk down Main Street on my way to a meeting or to get a bite to eat, I also get to walk down memory lane a little too. My mom took me to House of Fabric almost thirty years ago to pick out fabric for my prom dress. I will never forget being surrounded by all that lush and exotic material, and having to make what seemed like an impossible choice. Then weeks later, I wore that one-of-a-kind creation to my prom at the Marriot on the corner of Hampton and Main.

Since I grew up in West Columbia, coming downtown for me was a special occasion and at the time, there weren’t a lot of reasons

for my family to make that drive across the river. My dad, also a west Columbia native, would tell me stories about coming to Main Street as a teenager in the sixties. He came downtown to shop at Tapp’s and Penny’s and see movies at The Fox or one of the other many movie theatres that attracted kids from all over. Especially, he would confide, “All those pretty girls that went to Dreher.”

Like all Main Streets, Columbia’s has certainly had its ups and downs. But these days Columbia’s upward trajectory seems unstoppable. In the six years since I’ve been back home and working at the library, it's been a pleasure to be a part of a city filled with caring and committed leaders, business owners, artists and volunteers who make Columbia so vibrant.

Last summer, my family and I planned a week of “staycation” activities. We had so many things to do in and around Columbia, we didn’t get to them all. Soda City, Trustus, The Nickelodeon, First Thursdays, Riverfront Park, Robert Mills House. The list was LONG. And just look at the magazine in your hands. Some of the most fun you can have this summer is in the air-conditioned comfort of your local library. And put away your wallet, because all of our high quality experiences are FREE.

Anyone who complains that Columbia is lacking in amenities or cultural activities, shopping or restaurants hasn’t been off their porch in years. So take some time to explore the library and Columbia this summer. Maybe you’ll even make some Main Street memories of your own.

Warmly—

Melanie Huggins | Executive Director

Featured StaffRandy Heath | Career CoachRichland Library North Main

If you could trade places with one person for the day, dead or alive, who would it be?

It would be Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Although his life was amazingly difficult

at times for sure, I certainly admire his

strength, intellect, and wisdom when

faced with tremendous challenges.

To experience his life for a day would

be incredibly humbling and inspiring.

Why did you choose to work in a library?

With years of experience as a Career

Specialist and Workforce Consultant,

I just could not pass up the opportunity

to join a team and organization so com-

mitted to the community and innova-

tion. What a privileged responsibility I

have to serve the community through

Richland Library as a Career Coach.

How do you think the library inspires the community?

It is the one place you can always

count on to offer the very best resources,

fun activities, and opportunities for

growth to everyone in the community!

Customers thank us often for being

exactly that for them.

How does your job make the library better?

Being without employment or being

unsatisfied with your employment status

is obviously difficult; but not knowing

where to turn while in that circumstance

can be even more difficult. As a Career

Coach at Richland Library, I get to assist

customers with important job related

services that may help them get on the

right track towards reaching their goals. Describe life at the library in three words or less.

Awesome, inspiring and important!

LIT Room Ignites Young Minds

Looking around the children and teen areas at any Richland

Library location makes it clear that learning is happening

in new ways. As we kick off the 2015 Summer Learning

Challenge and continue to plan for the future, we’ve been

thinking long and hard about how the public library can

take more innovative approaches to addressing literacy

through the lens of the 21st Century learner.

Let’s face it, Generation Z is the first generation

born into a digital climate. They are unaware

of a world without the Internet, mobile phones,

gaming devices and MP3 players. In fact, every

facet of their lives seems to be tweeted, liked,

pinned and tumbled.

With an estimated 72 million youngsters

(ages 2 – 19) falling in this category, Richland

Library has been working with researchers and designers

from Clemson University to host an experimental space

for Gen Zers that’s equal parts high-touch and high-tech.

Why? Because Gen Zers simply don't respond to all the

norms of past generations. As learners, they’re looking

for ways to find solutions and make things on their own.

And thanks to a digitized world at their fingertips,

they’ve become the ultimate self-educators.

What evolved from this partnership was The LIT Room.

Nestled in the Children’s Room at Richland Library Main,

the stand-alone space integrates both a traditional and

digital learning environment. Funded by the National

Science Foundation, the project has transformed the way

Richland Library can share stories by creating an adaptive

and exploratory learning environment.

By introducing robotic elements that infuse the story

with light, sound and movement, the room creates

a multisensory reading experience. In other words,

the everyday space of the library merges with the

imaginary space of the book—turning words into worlds.

Thanks to help from second graders from Richland School

District One, researchers were able to study exactly how

Gen Zers’ are making connections,

expressing creativity and deriving

meaning during a 21st Century

read-aloud.

But here’s where the kids got really

excited. If The LIT Room’s intelligent

reconfigurations didn’t match their

imagined spaces, they were able

to fine-tune them by shaping a custom storytime that

was physical, technical, increasingly digital and inherently

social—all while building important literacy skills.

Mission accomplished.

Based on its early success, The LIT Room is going to stick

around Richland Library Main and several programs are on

the horizon. So if you’re looking for new ways to keep your

Gen Zers’ brains from slipping and sliding this summer,

be sure to stop by and see if The LIT Room piques

their eager, technologically-savvy and innovative brains.
