What happens when you take the Super Bowl, mix it with the Oscars®, wrap it in Mardi Gras, sprinkle it with the Olympics, marinate it in New Years Eve, multiply the excitement by a thousand, and have every major media entity in the world congregate on Westminster Abbey to cover it? You get a televised phenomenon that on paper would have almost no chance of living up to the billing.

But thankfully, the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton wasn’t a fantasy, and it didn’t take place on paper. It was a fairy tale that sprang to life, and somehow it managed to live up to the pressure of being the most hyped and anticipated event any of us will likely witness in our lifetime.

Why was it such a big deal? Well, for one thing, this couple is likeable, fun, sexy and easy to root for. And the larger-than-life grandeur surrounding the spectacle is exactly what we all needed after a four-year barrage of bad news and gloom and doom. Plus, let’s face it: A-list mega celebrities in America run and hide from this sort of attention, but in England, it’s a Royal tradition to throw back the curtain and package it as a gift for the entire world to see and experience.

Cheers to the husband and wife, to the Prince and Princess destined to become King and Queen. Thank you for showing us all that over-the-top dreams can come true, and we hope your married life will be as exciting, fulfi lling, passionate and real as your amazing wedding.

It’s my pleasure to allow you to forever relive this momentous day through the pages of this book. Special thanks to Access Hollywood for its incredible and unparalleled access into the inner sanctum of celebrity spectacles. Because of Access Hollywood, we can all feel like we received one of the coveted invitations and actually saw the wedding in person.

What a day! Enjoy this look back at a magical moment.

The Countdown Begins! How do you plan an event that over a million people from around the world will fl y in to London to experience, who don’t even have an invitation to attend? What’s the formula for producing an extravagant affair that upwards of two billion people could reportedly watch on television?

Luckily, the Royal Family has been staging and carrying out weddings for centuries, and they are experts in all aspects. But that said, it takes thousands of people with no royal blood running through their veins to assist, participate in, and help make the magic happen.

The world gushed with anticipation and gasped with delight on November 16, 2010, when Prince William and Catherine Middleton announced their engagement. The countdown began in earnest as the historic day of April 29, 2011 drew near.

There was a lot to do. In a short period of time. And residents of all nations could not wait to join in the celebration, and in some special way, feel like they were part of something grand.

This is a look at the preparations, details and moments that led up to the ceremony, and it’s easy to know something once-in-a-lifetime was about to unfold.

Ring of HonorWhen Princess Diana passed away, Prince William and Prince Harry were allowed to pick something very personal of their mum’s to keep. William chose his mother’s watch. Harry chose the engagement ring that Diana was given by the boys’ father. And so, the act of giving Princess Diana’s engagement ring to Kate Middleton concerned not only Prince William, but Prince Harry too. This was his choice of keepsakes.

When Prince Charles proposed to Princess Diana, he did so without a ring. Only after she accepted his proposal did she pick out the ring that Prince William would eventually give to Kate Middleton. It was originally available for purchase by the public, and therefore not made exclusively for Princess Diana. When Prince Charles purchased the ring in 1981 from Garrard Jewelers, it was priced at roughly 28,000 pounds, about $45,000 by today’s exchange rate.

A pre-dawn military walk-through of the Royal Wedding route took place ahead of the actual wedding. Up to 1,000 members of the armed forces — wearing full ceremonial uniform - left Wellington Barracks in Westminster to take part shortly before 0500 BST. Carriages took part in the full-scale procession to Westminster Abbey, although the first to arrive were two royal fleet cars at around 0450 BST. The Army, Navy and Royal Air Force all took part. Soldiers lined the route to the Cenotaph, outside the entrance to Downing Street. From there the RAF lined the road to Horse Guards Parade. Members of the Army lined Parliament Street and several companies of the Royal Navy lined the conclusion of the route. The Abbey closed its doors to the public on the Tuesday prior to the wedding so that preparations could get under way.

• Westminster Abbey became a popular venue for Royal Weddings when Princess Patricia of Connaught chose it for her marriage to the Honourable Alexander Ramsay in 1919 (the Ceremony marked the first time in 650 years that the Abbey had been used for a Royal Wedding).

• More than a million people visit Westminster Abbey every year.

• Westminster Abbey is neither a cathedral nor a parish church; Westminster Abbey was established as a ‘Royal Peculiar’ in 1560 by Queen Elizabeth I (this means that the Abbey is outside the jurisdiction and responsibility of the Church of England and that the Abbey receives no regular funding from the Crown, the Church of England or the government).

Royal Blooms• London-based floral designer Shane Connolly

created the floral displays for the wedding. Mr. Connolly directed a team of florists, includ-ing Westminster Abbey’s and Buckingham Palace’s florists, as well as florists individu-ally chosen by the Couple, to create the floral displays at the Abbey and for Buckingham Palace.

• The flowers and plants included blossoms, azaleas, rhododendron, euphorbias, beech, wisteria and lilac.

• The floral displays in the Abbey included eight 20 feet-high trees along with six English Field Maple and two Hornbeam. All the trees were growing in planters, which were also de-signed by Mr. Connolly and which were made by craftsmen at Highgrove, The Prince of Wales’s Residence in Gloucestershire.

• Many of the cut plants and flowers and all the growing plants were to be donated to charities or re-planted after the wedding.

• The trees, plants and flowers were sourced from the Saville Gardens and Valley Gardens in Windsor Great Park, Sandringham Estate and other English growers.

• The Princess Diana wedding dress (July 29, 1981) included a 25-foot train. Diana endured over fi ve months of fi ttings, including plenty of time to learn to walk with such a heavy train behind her.

• From the time that David and Elizabeth Emanuel were chosen to design the Princess Diana wedding dress, secrecy was king. Blinds covered the windows so that passersby could not sneak a peek. Security guards were hired to guard the shop round the clock.

• One copy of Princess Di’s wedding dress was sold in 2005 for around $100,000.

The Royal DayFinally. The countdown clocks had all run out. The rehearsals

had been completed. The speculation, predictions and hunches were no longer needed because April 29, 2011 had arrived!

While thousands slept outside Westminster Abbey the night before in hopes of catching a glimpse, or maybe more, of the Royal Couple on the magical day, throughout London the pomp and circumstance of a truly remarkable event was taking place.

Prince William and Kate Middleton began the day engaged, and as midday passed and rolled into the night they had offi -cially become the future King and Queen. And most likely ex-hausted as well.

This section showcases the arrivals of the dignitaries and guests, the prelude, the excitement in the crowds, and all the last-minute maneuvering before the event the entire world had been waiting for would begin.

The Dress• Kate Middleton’s “Something Borrowed” was the little-known

1936 Cartier “halo,” which was loaned to her by the Queen, a tradition for Royal Weddings.

• For her “Something Blue,” a blue ribbon was sewn into the interior of her dress, while her “something old” was the traditional Carrickmacross craftsmanship used to create the bridal gown.

• Kate Middleton’s earrings, which were her “Something New,” were a wedding day gift from her parents. They were diamond-set stylized oak leaves with a pear-shaped diamond set drop and a pave set diamond acorn suspended in the centre, and were inspired by the Middleton family’s new coat of arms, which includes acorns and oak leaves.

• Moments after she appeared at the entrance of Westminster Abbey, the BBC tweeted: “Kate Middleton’s wedding dress is an ivory gown with lace applique fl oral detail.”

• The dress design pays tribute to the Arts and Crafts tradition, which advocated truth to materials and traditional craftsmanship using simple forms and often Romantic styles of decoration. Ms Burton’s design draws on this heritage, additionally giving the cut and the intricate embellishment a distinctive, contemporary and feminine character.

• While Princess Diana’s dress included a massive 25-foot train, Kate Middleton’s ivory and white satin gazar had a train of just over six feet.

• The veil is made of layers of soft, ivory silk tulle with a trim of hand-embroidered fl owers, which was embroidered by the Royal School of Needlework.

The Royal Celebration

A perfect Royal Day ended with a celebration unlike anything the Brits had seen in three decades. With Prince William and Catherine Middleton offi cially husband and wife, and future King and Queen, it was time to show the world that not only could the grandest Royal Wedding of all-time be carried out with aplomb, but an entire nation could show its love, joy and pride in electrifying fashion.

The procession of the Royal Couple was a sight to behold, as revelers followed the fairy tale couple from the Abbey to Buckingham Palace. There would be more traditions to follow, specifi cally a kiss, and by the end of the day one thing was quite certain: dreams, and fairy tales, can come true.

Two roses named after Prince William and Kate Middleton have been planted in Windsor Great Park alongside other royal blossoms. Savill Garden has been closely associated with the Royal Family after its creation by Sir Eric Savill in the early 1930s under the patronage of King George V. It is 35 acres (14 hectares) of trees, shrubbery, ponds and streams, lawns, meadows and formal beds.

• Mark Flanagan, keeper of the Savill Garden, said the Catherine rose is peachy pink and sweet-scented. The Royal William, previously Rose of the Year in 1987, is a vibrant red.

• The roses were planted in separate beds to avoid a “kaleidoscope effect.”• The Royal William is bedded close to the Queen Elizabeth rose.• The Catherine was released in April 2011 and is a limited edition rose.• The roses did not flower in time for the wedding, but will blossom from

mid-June to September.• The roses are the newest addition to the royal-themed garden, which

was opened in 2010 by the Queen. The first two additions to the collection were the “Queen Mother” and the “Princess of Wales” roses.

In keeping with a longstanding royal custom, the Bride’s wedding bouquet was sent back to Westminster Abbey the day after the wedding and placed on the Grave of the Unknown Warrior. The Queen Mother, in memory of her brother Fergus, who died during the First World War, started this tradition.

• The Duchess of Cornwall was to plant a special tree to mark the marriage of Prince William and Kate Middleton. It was to be planted on May 3rd at St. Mary’s Church in Tetbury.

• The tree is nicknamed Wedding Cake due to its horizontal, tiered branches and star-shaped white flowers in the summer.

If Prince William didn’t already know how beautiful his Bride was, Prince Harry gave it away, by sneaking a peak and revealing a smile that the whole world saw as Kate walked down the aisle.
