this time. - Musicians of this period include: George Frideric Handel, Antonio Vivaldi, Henry Purcell, and Johann

Sebastian Bach.

Johann Sebastian Bach- Born on March 31, 1685 (new

style), in Eisenach, Germany. - His family had already gained a

musical reputation, stretching back several generations.

- His father, Johann Ambrosius, is believed to have taught Johann S. Bach how to play the violin.

- Orphaned at the age of ten and taken in by his brother, Johann Christian.

- Bach shared his love of music with his children, and several even became composers themselves.

- Bach was best known for his skills on organ and violin.

- Attended the Michaelisschule in Lüneburg.

- Worked for various churches like the New Church in Arnstadt, the Church of St. Blaise in Mühlhausen, and the St. Thomas Church.

- Performed for royalty such as the Duke Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar, Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Cöthe, and Frederick the Great of Prussia.

- Bach suffered from blindness in his old age, as well as a stroke, which killed him in 1750.

1932. - His father, John Francis Williams, was a

percussionist in the CBS radio orchestra.- Briefly attended both University of

California, Los Angeles and Juilliard. - Drafted into the US Air Force, conducting

and arranging music for several Air Force bands.

- Began working in Los Angeles, California as a movie studio musician.

- Featured in films such as Some Like It Hot (1959) and To Kill a Mockingbird (1962).

- Williams moved to television to begin his composition career with shows like Gilligan’s Island and Lost in Space.

- Received his first Academy Award nomination for Valley of the Dolls (1967), and his first Academy Award win for Fiddler on the Roof (1971).

- In his ongoing career, Williams has worked on more than 100 films.

- Williams most popular films feature his collaboration with Steven Spielberg, in films such as Jaws (1975), E.T. (1982), Jurassic Park (1993), and Schindler’s List (1993).

film, Schindler’s List, follows the true story of Oskar Schindler who arrives in Krakow, Poland in 1939. The businessman who joined the Nazi party for political expediency, staffs his factory with Jewish workers. As the SS begins exterminating Jews in the Krakow ghetto, Schindler protects his workers in an arrangement to keep his factory running, but soon realizes how he has saved over 1,000 innocent lives during the Holocaust.
