KIOSKS

Composite road plates enable utility companies and their contractors to quickly deploy a safe road crossing over a trench thereby maintaining traffic flow and avoiding congestion.

For linear trenches, road crossings and core-vac works, tested and recommended for use by the Transport Research Laboratory (TRL). No need for specialist lifting equipment, lifted into place with standard manhole lifting keys.

For industrial and commercial installations, the patented Gas Care Service GC range of engineered kiosks and larger range of GC walk-in housings comply with GISPRS35 2011. TURF MESH

CENTURION GROUND STABILISATION AND PROTECTION

THE QUICK GRASS REINFORCEMENT SYSTEM

Turf Mesh is a versatile grass support system which can be installed on already established lawns and park areas.

Manufactured from a heavy duty green and brown thermoplastic, which incorporates a blowing agent to help texture and creates a less slippery surface. Turf Mesh is UV stabilised, rock resistant and chemically inert, giving a long time reinforcement solution.

TURF MESH IS AVAILABLE IN THREE GRADES TO SUIT DIFFERENT LOADING CAPACITIES FROM PEDESTRIAN TO HGV ACCESS

APPLICATIONS

Turf Mesh is laid directly onto the grass surface and fixed into place with steel U-pins. The grass roots quickly grow through and establish within the mesh apertures, allowing areas to return to a natural appearance as the Turf Mesh becomes part of the grass root matrix.

Turf Mesh has been specifically designed to enable it to facilitate vehicular traffic on the ground with established grass/turf without effecting normal gardening practices such as mowing, fertilising and rolling.

TURFGUARD+ THE HEAVY DUTY REINFORCEMENT SYSTEM

Our Turf Guard+ product is a heavy duty extruded mesh panel that is used to protect grassed areas from damage by heavy vehicles. Ideally suited for providing access to construction sites, Turf Guard+ has a high profile providing grip for both wheeled and tracked vehicles. Weighing less than 10kg per panel, it can support vehicle weights up to 20 tonnes depending on ground conditions.

To install, Turf Guard+ is simply laid directly onto the surface and secured in position by 8mm steel fixing staples. Turf Guard+ can be used either as a temporary protection, or if left in position, the grass will grow through the mesh providing a stable and visually unobtrusive solution.

Ground stabilisation is a way of improving the weight-bearing capabilities and performance of in-situ sub-soils, sands, and other waste materials in order to strengthen road surfaces. The prime objective of soil stabilization is to improve the California Bearing Ratio of in-situ soils by 4 to 6 times. The other prime objective of soil stabilization is to improve on-site materials to create a solid and strong sub-base and base courses. Our Centurion range of ground stabilisation and protection systems, offer a wide solution of products, that are environmentally friendly, suitable for a large range of load-bearing applications and have a tried and tested track record within the industry.

THE INTERLOCKING GRASS PROTECTION SYSTEM

TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND GUIDLINES AVAILABLE ON REQUEST TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND GUIDLINES AVAILABLE ON REQUEST

Any ground that is frequently subject to vehicular or pedestrian traffic, such as car parks, driveways or access paths will require surface reinforcement, be that concrete, tarmac, block paving or porous paving systems. Without such reinforcement, the ground will quickly become boggy, rutted and unsightly, with little chance of sustaining healthy grass growth.

The Ecoblock porous paving systems provides effective grass protection and have been designed for long term use in a wide range of load-bearing applications.

The cellular structure of the Ecoblock porous paving systems is such that 84% of the surface area is available for infill. In grass applications this provides excellent grass coverage, rendering the Ecoblock system almost invisible once grass growth is established.

THE INTERLOCKING GRAVEL RETENTION SYSTEM

Ecoblock 45mm, although interchangeable as it can be used in grass applications, is purposed made for gravel applications where a decorative appearance is required.

The shallower depth also provides significant cost reductions as less gravel is required to infill the cells.

ECOTRUCK GEOTEXTILES AND GEOGRIDS

HEAVY DUTY GROUND REINFORCEMENTGEOSYNTHETICS

A heavy duty cellular paving system specifically designed and manufactured from recycled plastic to withstand all levels of traffic weight including HGV’s & coaches in areas where a grass or gravel finish needs to be retained

ECOTRUCK pavers can be infilled with gravel or grass seed and topsoil, to stabilise areas where it is required to retain a grass finish or a gravel look depending on the design requirements of the scheme.

ECOTRUCK is manufactured from recycled plastic offering an environmentally friendly porous paving solution that can also be incorporated with SUDS applications.

Geosynthetics are highly engineered, man-made polymeric products that are used within the ground to assist in solving civil engineering problems. During the last 30-40 years the use of geosynthetics on construction projects has grown rapidly and continues to do so as new products are developed, and new uses for existing products are discovered.

Geosynthetics provide benefits to construction schemes by delivering at least one of the defined functions listed below:

Probably the most widely-used geosynthetic products are geotextiles. A geotextile is a continuous sheet like product that is most regularly used to separate two different types of soil. Fundamentally, a geotextile must be permeable allowing water to flow through it.

Geotextiles are manufactured using two different processes that result in either a ‘woven’ or ‘non-woven’ product. In some applications either type of product may be perfectly suitable for the intended use with the choice determined by factors such as cost, technical requirements or the preference of the client, consultant or contractor.

Principle functions provided – separation, filtration, protection

The only defined function a GEOGRID can perform is reinforcement.

Geogrids are geosynthetic materials that are used increasingly widely in civil engineering applications to stabilise soil by introducing tensile reinforcement. They are in the form of open grids so that fill can partially penetrate through the GEOGRID apertures enabling the two materials to interlock together and act as a composite. Geogrids are used in a wide variety of applications including the construction of car parks, roadway bases and foundations, piling platforms, retaining walls, and steep slopes.

GEOGRID

EGRID RIGID BIAXIAL AND UNIAXAL

EGRID® Biaxial Geogrids are a range of premium quality ‘punched and drawn’ polypropylene Geogrids that optimise the rib height and open aperture area to maximise stone penetration and interlock with the GEOGRID. EGRID®. Biaxial Geogrids can be used in single or multiple layers to solve pavement problems by giving omni-axial reinforcement to granular sub-bases, piling platforms, capping layers and railway ballasts in areas of weak or variable soils. The load dispersal effect achieved allows the sub-base thickness to be reduced, ultimately reducing construction time and costs and improving the whole life cost.

Our EGRID® and SX Grid ranges of Geogrid are produced in highly controlled conditions using the ‘punched and drawn’ manufacturing process which is widely recognised, and has been independently proven, to provide the best lateral restraint and mechanical interlock with compacted granular fill.

TREEGUARD CELLULAR CONFINEMENT SYSTEM

Trees are an important part of the environment. They bring not only and aesthetic value in the form of visually softening and screening buildings, but also absorb pollution, noise and provide a viable habitat for wildlife. The preservation of healthy trees in a local amenity is therefore beneficial to both residents and the local community.

The solution for the preservation of healthy trees

With increased urbanisation, the requirements to build access roads, house driveways, overspill car parks and vehicle hard standings near to mature trees is ever present. Traditional methods of construction are not acceptable in these situations due to the damage which can be caused to the tree feeder roots, weakening or killing the tree. Most tree roots are present within the first 600mm of soil depth and extend from the tree a distance equal to 60-70% of the tree’s height. 80% of the crushing damage caused to these roots can be done when the first construction vehicle passes over the site.

The BS5837 Tree on Construction site document (2012) recommends current practices required when constructing in areas that are surrounded by trees. Part of this document recommends a three dimensional cellular confinement system as part of a no-dig sub base construction.

Available in three depths 100mm, 150mm and 200mm the Treeguard will be able to offer support for any type of vehicular loading.

‘No dig’ construction may be accommodated with the use of perforated Treeguard (a three dimensional system) in the sub-base layer. Treeguard reduces the overall depth of construction by introducing a cellular structure which dissipates downward loads by a horizontal transfer through the cell structure. This process in conjunction with the perforated cell wall also imports structural integrity to free-draining aggregates which would otherwise be unacceptable in road construction.

Therefore, a robust, shallow and free-draining sub-base is achieved, which allows vehicular access whilst allowing water and oxygen to permeate down to the tree roots.

GEOGRID reinforcement under tension before tension restraint offers support to vehicular traffic

Treeguard cellular confinement reduces rut formation by introducing lateral load transfer between adjacent cells providing a blanket support for vehicular traffic

CENTURION CELLULAR CONFINEMENT SYSTEM CENTURION CELLULAR CONFINEMENT SYSTEM

Centurion Web is a perforated cellular confinement system that has been designed to provide contractors with solutions to a variety of ground engineering challenges by preventing lateral movement of infill materials. Centurion Web stabilises the infill, providing load distribution over weak soils, sub-base stabilisation for paved and unpaved roads, and erosion control by retaining soil on steep slopes. Applications for the product include:

Part of a ‘No-Dig’ Tree Root Protection System

Erosion Control

Sub Base Reinforcement

Embankment Construction

Centurion Web is packaged into lightweight bundles enabling easy handling and straightforward installation requiring minimal mechanical plant. The perforations in the product are a critical element which improve lateral drainage through the cell walls and promote stability through greater ‘root lock’ in vegetated installations.

Fast & Simple Installation Supplied collapsed and easily cut to size on site.

Cost Saving Both time and money saved. Enables use of native and low-grade infill material. Up to 50% less fill required than with other load support methods.

Cellular Strength Hoop strength of cell walls and passive resistance of adjacent cells generates confinement forces.

Inter-Cell Drainage Perforated cell walls prevent hydrostatic build up within cells.

Stabilising Today’s Environment

Centurion Cellular Confinement System permits the use of common fill materials for even the most demanding load support and erosion control applications. A three-dimensional honeycomb network of perforated/textured cells increase the frictional interlock of the fill producing a semi rigid slab which distributes the load laterally. This inner core strength means that the depth of fill can potentially be reduced by as much as 50% when compared with traditional load support methods.

The heavy duty polyethylene (HDPE) strips are ultrasonically welded together to produce a lightweight panel that can be easily transported manually in less accessible areas - ideal for retaining walls, load support applications and a variety of slope stabilisation requirements.

CENTURION WEB

CENTURION WEB STRUCTURAL QUALITIES

CELLULAR CONFINEMENT

PERFORATED CELL OPTION

The transfer of vertical stresses from loaded cells to adjoining unloaded cells requires stress redistribution through cell walls. The efficiency of this transfer is related directly to the frictional interaction between the infill and cell walls. Tests indicate that perforated cell walls can be more effective than textured cell walls in increasing the interface friction. Therefore, the structural capacity of the perforated Centurion Web load support system with gravel infill is more effective that the textured Centurion Web system. Perforations also offer the advantage of lateral drainage, particularly useful over impermeable subgrades, making perforated Centurion Web the recommended choice for many access road/load support applications

RETAINING WALLS

Simple gravity or composite retaining walls can be constructed rapidly using local infill materials. The cellular structure reinforces the fill throughout the entire width of the wall which when combined with the frictional forces acting between the layers, produces a homogeneous structural mass. The wall face will support natural vegetative cover and due to the flexible nature of Centurion Web, retaining walls can be constructed on site with difficult or restricted access.

RAIL/ROAD BASE STABILISATION

Centurion Web produces an extremely strong rail/road base with increased flexural strength. Both time and money can be saved as base thickness can be reduced by as much as 50% compared with traditional stone designs. The reinforced fill acts like a semi-rigid slab, distributing loads laterally and greatly reducing sub-grade pressures. Low-grade infill can be used in both temporary and permanent constructions, even over very weak sub-grades.

VEGETATED/NON VEGETATED SLOPE PROTECTION

In the case of vegetated slopes, Centurion Web confines and reinforces the vegetative mat and the cells increase the vegetation natural resistance to erosive forces protecting the root zone from loss of soil particles. Especially effective in areas of sheet or intermittent concentrated flow. On non-vegetated slopes, Centurion Web improves the erosion resistance of granular fill, dissipating hydraulic energy and preventing down slope migration of particles.

Protech GM+ is a high performance proprietary reinforced gas barrier, that has been specifically designed to conform with the latest guidance documents. Due to its unique composition the membrane is extremely robust and flexible and therefore easy to install on site. The membrane also provides protection from damp and, therefore, there is no need to install a separate DPM.

Protech GM Super is a high performance proprietary reinforced gas barrier, that incorporates a 12 micron aluminium foil layer, for maximum protection against ground-borne gases. This has been specifically designed to conform with the latest guidance documents. Due to its unique composition, the membrane is extremely robust and flexible and, therefore, easy to install on site. The membrane also provides protection from damp and, therefore, there is no need to install a separate DPM.

Ciria 665, BS8485 and Local Authority Ground Gas Handbook recommended that gas membranes are specified on the basis of the ‘need to survive’ construction, i.e. use one that is puncture and tear resistant. Thickness should not be the main determinant of the suitability of a membrane for a particular site, although it can indirectly influence some key performance parameters.

In practise, because of the nature of construction sites, the durability, survivability and robustness of membranes are equally important than purely permeability to gas. Protech GM+ incorporates a reinforced grid to ensure that maximum protection is achieved when installed to manufacturers’ instructions. The need for high quality workmanship during installation should not be under-estimated. The health and safety of the occupants of the building is dependent on its satisfactory performance. If installed incorrectly or damaged during the construction process, the membrane is rendered ineffective and will fail to provide adequate protection against the ingress of ground gas or vapours.

These ductile iron units have been proven to withstand the D400 load test without the need for concrete haunching to achieve structural strength. The effective collection and transportation of surface water run-off is fundamental to highways construction. Bridge superstructures fall within this category and the use of positive drainage can be provided in many forms. A combined kerb and drainage system is the preferred option and it is widely acknowledged that this solution efficiently removes the surface water build-up along the channel edge, thereby reducing localised flood conditions with the benefit of improving driver safety conditions. This form of drainage solution also provides a controlled discharge of the contaminated collected run-off water. An enclosed channel with connecting pipe-work is able to contain and safely direct the contaminated discharge to specific locations thereby satisfying environment legislation.

Published studies relating to the durability of highway structures have also concluded that without positive sub-surface deck drainage, other harmful effects to the structure fabric are likely to materialise, triggered by the infiltration of surface water run-off. Evidence has demonstrated that surface water will percolate through the asphalt construction either through reflective cracking or through less compacted areas, remaining trapped and perched directly above the waterproof layer. In many cases, the natural evacuation through the underlying layers is prevented by the damming effect of the movement joints located at either end of the bridge. Consequently, traffic movements create localised compression forces that initiate a ‘pumping action’ of water within the construction. A bow wave under pressure squeezes water through the asphalt matrix, causing the erosion of fine binding and loss of carriageway strength simultaneously.

Introduction

The effective collection and transportation of surface water run-off is fundamental to highways construction. Bridge superstructures fallwithin this category and the use of positive drainage can be pro-vided in many forms. A combined kerb and drainage system is thepreferred option and it is widely acknowledged that this solutionefficiently removes the surface water build-up along the channeledge, thereby reducing localised flood conditions with the benefitof improving driver safety conditions. This form of drainage solutionalso provides a controlled discharge of the contaminated collectedrun-off water. An enclosed channel with connecting pipe-work is ableto contain and safely direct the contaminated discharge to specificlocations thereby satisfying environment legislation.

Problem

Published studies relating to the durability of highway structureshave also concluded that without positive sub-surface deckdrainage, other harmful effects to the structure fabric are likely tomaterialise, triggered by the infiltration of surface water run-off.

Evidence has demonstrated that surface water will percolatethrough the asphalt construction either through reflective cracking orthrough less compacted areas, remaining trapped and percheddirectly above the waterproof layer. In many cases, the naturalevacuation through the underlying layers is prevented by thedamming effect of the movement joints located at either end of thebridge. Consequently, traffic movements create localised compression forces that initiate a ‘pumping action’ of water withinthe construction. A bow wave under pressure squeezes waterthrough the asphalt matrix, causing the erosion of fine binding andloss of carriageway strength.

Simultaneously, the build-up of hydrostatic pressures containedwithin an undrained and saturated environment can also adverselyaffect the deck waterproofing and movement joint performance, incurring increased whole-life costs of the bridge. The Bridgdek 2,combined kerb and drainage system has a tried and proven trackrecord that addresses all of these issues.

Bridgdeck Drainage Systems

In compliance with the Manual of Contract Documents for HighwaysWorks and with a full appreciation of the problems associatedwith bridge drainage, Buildbase Civils has developed theBridgdek Drainage System, a comprehensive range of combinedkerb and drainage modules that can be used in new build andrefurbishment applications. Bridgdek is a patented product. Bridgdeck has been employed as the preffered drainage systemon many projects both nationally and internationally in countriessuch as Singapore, Hong Kong, Russia, Ireland, Romania and Italy.

Bridgdek 1

The original system development by Buildbase Civils for the efficient and effective collection of contaminated surface waterfrom highway bridge superstructures taht may be used with or without other propriety sub-surface drainage systems.

Bridgdek 2

Bridgdek 2 is two part pre-assembled combined composite coverand ductile iron base unit. Unlike any other bridge drainage system, Bridgdek 2 incorporates a unique channel for the collection of sub-surface water. This seperate channel, with it’s ownside entry facility allows water to access the unit by either normalgravity flow or under pressure caused by traffic wheel movements.Sub-surface water can be transported along the inner channel completely unaffected by hydrualic pressures within the maindrainage channel carrying the surface water run-off.

In sensitive areas where colour demarcation is required, Bridgdek2 is supplied complete with a high strength polyester composite

top cover that permits RAL colour matching with bridge concreteprofiles or coloured verge paving - a unique architectural improvement on the general appearance of drainage units withoutpainting and associated maintenance problems.

Unless otherwise requested, the Bridgdek 2 system is manufacturedas a two part system - a ductile iron base with a composite polyester cover. Bridgdek 2 also incorporates an anti-displacementfeature to protect against wheel impact forces. A simple dove-tailprofile in each base unit provides an interlocking mechanism.

Bridgdek 3

Conventional kerb side entry drainage systems, although relativelyefficient in the collection of surface water run-off, are not speciallydesigned to drain excessive water build-up accumulated withinporus asphalt construction.Building on the sound engineering principles of the existingBridgdek range, this innovation now permits the effective collectionof water below the road surface from within the porous layer via aseries of vertical hydrualically designed slots, leading to a deep, high capacity channel. In addition to the positive reflief of surfacewater, Bridgdek 3 offers a total drainage capability offering a sub-surface drainage facility. Bridgdek 3 is supplied as a twp partpre-assembled combined composite cover and ductile iron baseunit unless otherwise requested.

Geofin is a range of geocomposite drainage systems that offers cost-effective, practical solutions to groundwater and gas-related problems. Applications include retaining wall/abutment drainage, highway edge drainage, deck drainage, gas dispersal and collection, leachate collection, leak detection, erosion control, sports field drainage and basement waterproofing. Geofin drains are created when a geotextile filter and a core are combined. The core can take several forms, but is usually a synthetic polymer. Fin drains function as a below-ground drainage system for the collection and transportation of liquids and gases. The easy-to-install drains are lightweight, versatile in design, and have a high flow capacity.

GEOFIN

Pre-fabricated geocomposite sheet drain(s) comprise single studded high density polyethylene core(s) wrapped on one side with a non-woven needle punched polypropylene filter fabric.

Drainage systems have been specially developed for sub structures, car parks, basements, reservoirs and retaining walls to stop the build-up and penetration of percolated ground water. It prevents damage to the structure by quickly collecting and deflecting the water flow away from the face of the structure by using a unique combination of geotextile filter fabric and impermeable dimpled sheeting. This barrier prevents the majority of water reaching the structure and creates a positive cavity thus eliminating staining from water ingress associated with conventional french drains or filter fabrics where the external face is often constantly saturated.

Installation

To maximise the collection of sub-surface water the Bridgdek unitshould be bedded as near to the waterproofing layer as possibleand care should be taken to avoid any surface damage during thedrainage installation procedure. Specific Installation details areavailable on a separate data sheet.

Expansion Joint Assembly

Prior to the Bridgdek Expansion Joint assembly installation, all pipe sleeving should be cast in place and aligned across the movement joint. The pipe sleeve size and arrangement should be able to accommodatethe bridge articulation and associated movements with an allowance forthe free movement of the expansion joint linkage. To avoid any possibleinterference between bridge movement joint and the pipe sleeve arrangement, consultation with the joint manufacturer is advisable. If however, additional clearance is necessary, this can be achieved bysimply off-setting and cranking the Bridgdek expansion joint linkage. All pipe sleeving is to be supplied by the contractor.
