Each packet contains the address of its destination computer as well as the computer of its origin. The packets are reassembled at the destination to get the original information.

The TCP/IP protocol is designed for large internet working, e.g. WAN (Wide Area Network).

TCP/IP consists of five layers:

Application,

Transport,

Internetwork or network,

Data link and

Physical layers.

FUNCTIONS OF EACH LAYER

•Layer 5: application : It is the top most layer. it provides an interface to communicate and transfer data. Eg.: HTTP, FTP, SMTP etc.

•Layer 4: transport : This layer is represented by two protocols TCP(transmission control protocol) and UDP(user datagram protocol). it is responsible for the delivery of data in a proper sequence. Eg.: TCP,UDP, etc.

•Layer 3: Internetwork layer/Network layer : Packages data into IP datagrams(packets), Which contain source and destination address information that is used to forward the datagrams between computers. Eg.: IP.

•Layer 2: data link layer : The data link layer specifies how and at what speed packets are transported over the physical layer. Eg.: Ethernet, token ring, etc.

•Layer 1: Physical layer : It is responsible to transmit data (bit stream) over a physical medium such as wires, fiber optic links or radio links, connectors etc. Eg.: Coaxial cable, optical fiber, twisted-pair wire etc.
