Kaplan Financial student Yizhe Wang,achieved first place in the world in theJune 2008 ACCA F4 Corporate andBusiness Law examination. His examresult of 95% topped those reached bythe other 20,571 students sitting thepaper worldwide. Yizhe, a Chinesestudent who moved to the UK seven years

ROUTE TO ACCA QUALIFICATION

What is ACCA?

The Association of Chartered CertifiedAccountants (ACCA) is one of the worldsleading professional accountancyorganisations with nearly 450,000members and students members in 170countries. ACCA members work in publicpractice, industry, commerce and theprivate sector.

How do I become ACCA qualified?

To qualify you must complete the 3elements required by ACCA Exams,Ethics and Experience.

Exams

You will have two levels to complete:Fundamentals and Professional,comprising 16 papers of which 14 you arerequired to pass (unless you receiveexemptions from any papers).

1. Fundamentals Level KnowledgeModule

If you have one of the following, you maybe exempt from this module:

A degree in Accountancy or Business The AAT qualification Membership of a professional body

accredited by ACCA.

2. Fundamentals Level Skills Module

If you have a relevant degree you may begranted exemptions from some of thepapers.

The papers in this module can be taken inany order, allowing you flexibility to takepapers that align with your current role,and responsibilities.

3. Professional Level Essentials andOptions Module

Again papers can be taken in any orderwithin each module, and there is norequirement to take all papers at thesame exam sitting. At this level you areexpected to apply knowledge, skills andprofessional judgement as well asanalyse, evaluate and makerecommendations.

Ethics

There is an online Ethics Module tocomplete. It is compulsory for studentswho joined ACCA from 1 January 2007onwards and recommended for all otherstudents. ACCA will advise all studentshow to complete this module, whichshould normally be done when studyingpaper P1 Professional Accountant in heEssentials Module.

Experience

You must have 3 years relevant practical

experience, which can be obtainedbefore, during or after your exams. This isknown as the Practical ExperienceRequirement (PER). You will be asked toprovide ACCA with an online annualreturn to show the experience you haveachieved during the preceding year,which has to be authorised by aworkplace mentor.

If you have completed your Exams andEthics module, but not your Experiencerequirements, you are known as an ACCAAffiliate. Once you have completed all

three elements, you can apply to ACCA forfull membership and have ACCA afteryour name.

Can I start the ACCA qualification?

The ACCA qualification is open toeveryone, although your starting pointmay be different depending on yourprevious qualifications. For example, ifyou have any of the followingqualifications, you should be eligible tojoin ACCA:

Degree, NVQ, AAT, CAT or two A levels andthree GSCEs in five separate subjectsincluding English and Maths.

If you dont have any of the above, andare over 21, you can join ACCA under theMature Student Entry Route. You will berequired to pass papers F2 and F3 within2 years of joining. Once you have passedthose two papers, ACCA will permit you toprogress through the rest of thequalification.

How can I find out if I have anyexemptions?

If you have completed the AATqualification, you will start at the Skills

module.

If you have a degree in Accountancy,Finance or Business, you could haveexemptions from the Knowledge moduleand some of the papers in the Skillsmodule.

Detailed information is available on theACCA website www.accaglobal.com.

How and when do I register as anACCA student?

You must register as an ACCA student ifyou wish to sit your exams and becomeACCA qualified. We recommend that youregister online via the ACCA website andsend all the information required by ACCAas soon as you decide to start thequalification. It normally takes at least sixweeks to process an application onceACCA have received all yourdocumentation.

When do I need to register as an

ACCA student by?

If you are beginning at the Knowledgemodule and taking the computer basedexams, we recommend you register asyou begin your studies, but no later thantwo to three weeks before your firstexamination.

For all paper-based exams, ACCA havestrict deadlines on when to register,depending on when you would like to sityour first exams:

June Exam sitting

Registration deadline is 31 December ofthe preceding year.

December Exam Sitting

Registration deadline is 15 August thatyear.

Please note that it is YOUR responsibilityto register with ACCA. This is separate toenrolling on a course with Kaplan

Financial.

When and where are the ACCAexams?

ACCA paper based exams are held in Juneand December of each year. They takeplace within the first two weeks of therelevant month.

Exams for the Skills, Essentials andOptions modules are held at regionalACCA exam centres. A list of locations canbe found on the ACCA website. The exams

are all three hours long, with anadditional 15 minutes reading andplanning time at the start of the exam.

Knowledge module exams are two hourslong and can be attempted by twodifferent methods. You can complete apaper-based exam at your regional examcentre, or a computer based exam at yourlocal Kaplan Financial centre.

How do I enter for my exams?

If you are studying the Knowledge leveland are taking the computer basedexams, you should contact your nearestKaplan Financial centre to book your CBE.

For all paper-based exams, ACCA havestrict deadlines regarding when youshould enter for exams:

June exam sitting

Enter for the exam on/before 15 April.

December exam sitting

Enter for the exam on/before 15 October.

ACCA will send all registered students anexam entry form by March and Septembereach year. You can either complete andpost this back, together with thenecessary fees, to ACCA before thedeadline, or enter online through themyACCA section of the ACCA website,using the log-in details sent to you byACCA when you registered as a student.

Oxford Brookes degree programme

The BSc (Hons) Degree in AppliedAccountancy is a joint initiative betweenACCA and the Oxford Brookes University,a highly respected UK university. The
