Godwin ChangHappiness depends upon ourselves. - Aristotle

It is not how much we have, but how much we enjoy, that makes happiness. - Charles Spurgeon

Real happiness is cheap enough, yet how dearly we pay for its counterfeit. - Hosea Ballou

Dear Fellow Members,

Life is not perfect but we need to take stock periodically to appreciate how happy we should be. I have picked up some quotes on happiness that hopefully can inspire us.

We are well on our way in preparing for next year and the years beyond. For preparing the Board Members for next year we formed a nominations committee of Andrea Wu, Richard Chang, Sam Mar and myself. We have successfully put together a good slate of candidates who have graciously agreed to run for the Board of Governors and Supervisors and to serve the Club. We have tried to continue to have different demographics to be on the Board so that all interests are better represented. I have previously mentioned that the ACC Board work very well together and are unified with a single vision to continually look to improve the Club.

In this month issue of the ACCENT the bios of the candidates will be provided. Please do read it and make sure that your vote is counted. As with each year the AGM is approaching and it is critical that we achieve quorum by having all of our Members attend. Your presence and vote is absolutely needed, so please note in your diaries: AGM Saturday, November 21 and for all you partygoers this day is also a “don’t-miss” date for our special evening entertainment - Hollywood Extravaganza. In order to meet local regulations we do need a proper quorum so that important matters are approved such as the budget for the coming year. The club management and staff will be trying very hard to obtain your participation and to make it as pleasurable as possible. I seek your involvement and support as it is really important for the proper running of our Club.

The Club is always trying to fulfill our requirements and we now have a nutritionist which I think is a great idea. The idea of a nutritionist was revitalized during this year’s Board Retreat and now we are better able to assist our Members to ensure health and balance. The Club caters to so many facets of our lives in Taiwan and I hope that, as Members, we take full advantage of what the Club has to offer and increase our happiness.

See you around the Club.

Dear Members,

Fortunately the slow summer for the Club is past as we are again bustling with activity. We hope that everyone enjoyed their summer holiday and now with the kids back in school, everyone is settling back into their regular routine. As we enter into the cool weather of fall, the Club will have plenty of promotions and activities to keep everyone busy.

We had a lot going on in September, particularly for the kids. Tennis held a US Open Mixed Doubles for the adults, and the following day, a Kid’s Open Day where approximately 50 kids were out on the court doing drills and learning fundamentals. I would also like to mention that in the evening the Club also enjoyed live music in Rendezvous with Adoga where they rocked the house. The live music on the first and third Friday of each month has almost become a standing room only affair. The following weekend, our fitness team held our first ever Morning Pilates Session where we had 43 Members come to get their morning off to a healthy start. The event went so well that we will be offering more similar activities soon. Given the popularity of our US tax seminar last year, we offered an Estate Planning Seminar this year that was just as popular. And on the final weekend in September we held our second Children Tree Climb in Zhishan Gardens to enjoy nature and make some crafts as well, and then a special Sunday brunch to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival.

October promises to be full of activity with Zu Yongyi performing in the Rendezvous on the 2nd, followed by a children’s cooking class the following Saturday. Then on the 17th, we are extremely excited to offer our first ever, ACC TopChef Cooking Competition, we will have 6 Member teams competing for top culinary honors while the Members come to cheer them on while enjoying hors d’oeuvres, beer and wine in a cocktail style environment as they are rooting for their favorite team. Being our first ever cooking competition, we are planning a lively evening with really great prizes for the winners. On the 25th is our always popular ACC Swimming Championship. We will also offer a Halloween Ghost Mask class for the kids leading up to an Annual ACC Halloween Party that promises to be exceptionally special considering that it will be held on the 31st this year. I also want to take a moment to remind everyone that it is again time for our annual “Hollywood” Extravaganza on 21 November. The team has been working very hard to make certain that this will be the best Extravaganza ever so please do not miss it.

We also ask that all Members bring their attention to the upcoming Annual General Meeting (“AGM”) and Board Elections to be held on 21 November. We have included a list of the Board candidates with their backgrounds and interest in joining the Board inside this issue of the ACCent. You will also be receiving the AGM and Election package which will include the Candidate Bios, the AGM Agenda and important information addressing the agenda items. We hope that all Members will take the time to read these important documents and participate in the AGM as we must receive ballots from at least 50% of the voting Members.

One of the items on the agenda is the renovation of the main kitchens. I hope that you had a chance to read the kitchen article in last month’s ACCent Magazine that addressed the importance and the reasons behind the renovation. The AGM package will include an in-depth Q&A that will further highlight the needs to renovate the kitchen up to world recognized standards and to current building codes. This is an extremely important step in our continual efforts to improving the experience at ACC. The renovation will be able to increase worker’s safety, improve food hygiene, synergize operation logistics and it will allow the kitchen to cook food faster and more consistently for a better quality taste. If you have any questions that are not addressed in the Q&A, please let us know so we can urgently address your query.

Finally, I would like to thank all Members who participated in the annual Member survey. Each year this is an important part of our business planning process for the Board to review and evaluate your views of the Club in preparation for the coming year, especially with the fiscal year now aligned to the calendar year. It is also your opportunity to provide your comments and thoughts regarding the Club and points that are important to you. The Member survey combined with the comments cards and verbal feedback are exceptionally important for the Board and the Club to stay proactive in our commitment for continuous improvement toward our journey to become the “Best Club in Asia”.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Club,

Professional Experience: Senior Vice President Mercuries Asia Ltd, Education: BSBA Finance, University of Missouri St Louis. I was born in St Louis Mo in the US and moved to Taiwan almost 30 years ago. I am a principle in a consumer products company focused on product design and sourcing for US Retailers. We support our business with approximately 100 employees in Taiwan and China. We have been successful in business with a focus on both continuity and constant improvement in the service quality we deliver to our customers and I believe these are values that the management of the

Club shares today.

I have been an ACC member for 15 yrs with my wife Emily and my 2 daughters, Eliza and Louisa. As Emily and I have raised our children in Taiwan, the club has always been an important center of our lives and remains even more so after our youngest daughter left for college in the US this fall.

With great respect for the improvements made in the Club's facilities and management over recent years, and for the invitation and honor to participate and contribute to the club's governance as a board member, I plan to draw on all the experience of current and prior board members as well as my years in business to support the strong management that has allowed our club to prosper and continue serve its members well.

Emily and I are very regular patrons of all the dining venues and if you have not met Emily in exercise classes at the club, you must not have been to class! More importantly, we have been involved in the club not only as patrons but also as volunteer facilitators and tried to open new channels of communication between members and club management at all levels. This involvement to make the club responsive to members through open and regular dialogue is what makes the difference between a good and great community. I want to see the club continue to be a leader among private clubs in Taiwan and Asia and continue to improve in all respects. I hope to have the opportunity through your support to give back to the ACC community through service on the board.

"I was born in Taiwan and left the country when I was 10 and since then I've had the great opportunity to experience the diversity of cultures from living in different countries in South America and Asia, it is where I learned that every culture is similar in some ways yet special in different ways and many times, our decision making is affected greatly by our culture, therefore empathy with understanding is very crucial when dealing with people of different cultural background.

After finishing my medical course and passed both the US and Taiwan medical board exams, I decided to come back to Taiwan to serve my people. I worked at Shin Kong Memorial Hospital as an OB-GYN doctor for 7 years before venturing into business. I opened my 1st MaCherie Post Partum Center (璽悅產後護理)10 years ago and now we have four centers, still growing and the company is on its way going public.

My family and I are happy to be a part of the American Club. My wife, Pia, loves spending the time at the salon while my three precious daughters, Kimberly, Chloe and Katelyne (ages 16, 13 and 11) enjoy the facilities club provides, I am a sports enthusiast, a tri-athlete for several years, using the club's sports facilities is already part of my everyday life.

As an active member of the club and a self-made entrepreneur of a service oriented business, I have seen the club growing towards the right direction and my hope is to bring more improvement. I am a strong believer of customer feedback system, feedback guides and informs your decision making and influences your product roadmap. Getting a handle on how members view the club is very important, we can do so by conducting the survey in regular basis and present it in the dashboard manner on ACC website and/or ACC magazine. This is a good way not just to channel both the members and the administrative office but also to gauge and audit on what have or have not done by the latter. Customer care and satisfaction is a priority in my agenda as it is also the very core and language of my business.

Lastly, if given the chance, it will be my great privilege and honor to serve my fellow members.

2015 BOARD OF GOVERNORS AND SUPERVISORS ELECTION

I cannot imagine living in Taiwan without the ACC. When my family and I moved to Taipei from Connecticut, USA, nine years ago, it was an extreme change in our lifestyle. As soon as we became members of the ACC, we felt part of a community. We found our “home away from home.” My wife, Eileen, became quickly acclimated and our son, Brendan, who was two years old at the time, loved going to the Terrace and playing in the nursery. In 2008, we welcomed a baby girl into our family. And as the saying goes, ‘time flies’ … Sophia is now six years old. The ACC has given us much comfort, fun and camaraderie over the years, and now it is my time to give back by volunteering to be a member on the Board of Governors.

If elected to the Board, my mission would be to transform the club into more of a family friendly place. As my children begin to grow older, I’m noticing that the club is lacking in venues and resources for this age group. I am asking for your vote to allow me to contribute more to our club, especially for our children. I have more ideas if you’ll give me the chance.

All this said, although the club is a family place, it is still a business, and as such, needs to be run well in order to succeed. My life experiences and business track record have given me a solid background for such a position. I received a BS in Chemistry/Business from the University of Scranton, PA, an MBA at Golden Gate University in San Francisco, CA. In addition, I hold a certification in the High Potentials Leadership Program at Harvard University.

I am currently Vice President of the Electronic Materials group and General Manager for Enthone, Taiwan. I manage the Strategic Business Unit of EMG (Electronic Materials Group) sales and technical service team within Asia. I have also developed and managed Enthone’s strategic plan.

In summary, I am aware of what the ACC has to offer as well as its potential for all age groups. I appreciate your consideration for electing me to serve on the Board of Governors. I am confident I will make some positive changes and appreciate your quality feedback. Thank You!

Personal Background:Born in Taipei, attended Dominican School till elementary school. After Dominican School, I went to US to study at Eaglebrook boarding junior high school and Northfield Mount Hermon boarding high school on the east coast followed by New York University. Right after graduation in 1994, I was involved in trading business with Russia. Then in 1996 got involved in the wine industry till now. After coming back to Taiwan, in 1998, I became a member of ACC till now.

To Serve on the ACC Board of GovernorsHome away from home is the most important values I embrace while being involved in governing the club. I believe in the voices of the members. We should implement suggestions that are in the benefit to the many, meanwhile not conflicting with the long term operation of the club. The end goal is to always to improve the value of the club to the members and provide a safe haven away from home with a lot of fun.

Whenever I am given a responsibility, I will give in 100% of my effort.

Leadership Experience: 2013 - Present Current Board of Governors (Incumbent) 2013 - 2014 F&B Committee Chairman2014 - 2015 Membership Committee Chairman2010 - Present MIS Committee Member, ACC

My Value Proposition: Having lived here for over 13 years and a member of the club since 2007, I continue to bring a unique and differentiated perspective to the club via my experience living and working in Taiwan.

Why I love ACC: ● It is an ever changing and improving club; always striving to maintain itself as a uniquely differentiated place where members can get away from the hustle of the area, enjoy time with family, have a meeting, workout, or have a quiet meal at the end of a hectic day.

If Re-elected, I will: ● Continue to utilize my experience over the last two years on the board to guide and improve the club. I wish to make decisions in the club that improve it and add value to all of our members. I believe that over the last two years I have done just that.

Governor CandidateGiuseppe Izzo

My wife Irene, our kids Francesco and Mariangela enjoy the Club as much as I do. We frequently use the Fitness facilities and Swimming Pool to keep in shape, complement them with the large variety of Healthy Food available at all the Restaurants and often add a touch of beauty at the Salon.

Difficult to find any better in town, especially when looking for a place to meet friends, have a good meal with them and integrate the family into a dynamic and international social network.

There is no relaxing week-end without a full day at ACC, almost as important as the Sunday Mass.

I am Italian and I work for ST Microelectronics, a French-Italian leader in Semiconductors. I have been posted in many different Countries of Asia, and USA.

Taipei is the city I have lived-in the most (18 years) and the place I have selected as my hometown, for the two obvious reasons driven by the heart: the Family and the Country.

Within the Taiwanese Business Sector I have been involved in a number of activities beyond the working environment, both within and outside my Industry.

I was the Chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce in Taiwan for the years 2013-2014 and currently serving as the Vice Chairman of the Chamber, Co-chair of the Technology Committee and LCI representative.

Concurrently I am also Director of the Board at the Taiwan Telematics Industry Association and Vice-Chairman of the MEMS Committee at SEMI Taiwan.

How will I help improve the American Club?

Well, over the past few years there has been a great transformation in every sector of the Club that has made it so enjoyable. This has been possible thanks to the visionary and positive leadership of the Board.

I will try my best to bring the experience acquired in other organizations in always attending to the Member’s needs, in always matching their expectations and always creating new possibilities.

I will do that by bringing to the Club that touch of Italy that may make it a bit more… American.

Page 28: ACC Cover 1 · ACC Running Group Workout Ladies Social Luncheon Group Kids Cooking Class - Snake Bread and Stuffed Orange RDV Music Night - M.J. JAZZ QUARTET ACC TopChef Cooking Competition

I have three key areas of experience that I would utilized to add value to the club:● This last year, I have chaired the membership committee, which has brought me into contact with a number of current and potentially new members. Controlling the unique situations that come with a large waiting list is challenging and requires a unique set of know-how to manage this. I believe over the last year I have done well to make moderate changes within different levels of membership that will provide a healthy and long-term overall cash improvement to the club.

● My experience in F&B in support of my brewery restaurants I own has given me large insight into the running of a streamlined and profitable multi-store F&B establishment. While chairing the F&B committee, F&B revenues jumped while we maintained solid cost control. Beyond this, we started to work on the intangible experience at the club and service level objectives. These are critical to making the club the Best In Asia!

My primary objective is to make sure that ACC stays as unique and valuable to members tomorrow as it is today.

I feel honored to have the opportunity to be considered as a candidate for the American Club of China (ACC) Board. My family has very much enjoyed living in Taipei for the past two and one-half years. Our youngest daughter has only spent the summers with us, primarily based upon her collegiate and post-graduate coursework back in the United States. However, for all of us, the ACC has been a cornerstone of our life while residing here in Taipei. We have enjoyed many meals, social functions, entertainment and activities at the club over the past few years and look forward to continued involvement and satisfying experiences. The most important element of the club are the people we’ve met and the friendships developed through our club interactions. It’s also quite exciting to take note of the tremendous club improvements undertaken to date and the additional enhancements planned for the future at the ACC, to further ensure that our club truly continues to live up to its moniker of being the “Best in Asia.”

Our ACC has a great local reputation, which evidences the fact that the leadership of the club has taken the proper approach around ensuring that the members, staff, administration and board all work together as a Team, towards that common goal of creating a unique and integral family experience for each and every member.

From my own professional and personal perspective, leadership is about service. That said, I am interested in serving our club membership, ensuring that we take all pertinent inputs into careful consideration, prior to moving forward with a decision. As with any business, we need to meet customer expectations and requirements (our membership) in order to succeed. We also need to make guiding board judgments, to ensure that we both meet our member’s requirements, while further ensuring that we’re meeting the responsibilities of operating a club in the most professional and businesslike manner possible. I am prepared to give back to the club, which has provided my family and me with a welcoming place, where we feel at home and very happy with each and every visit.

Stephen and his family have been a member of ACC for almost 10 years and enjoy very much all aspects of the Club. He looks forward to the opportunity to work with the 2016 Board to make ACC an even better place. If elected, Stephen will continue to contribute his knowledge and expertise as a corporate legal practitioner to the governance body of our club.

My recent tenure as a Board member has given me a much better appreciation of the ACC and all the people who work so hard to make the member experience special. As an expat in Taiwan for over 10 years now, I have been able to watch the club develop and change. Indeed, as my, and my families needs have changed over the years, we have come to appreciate and utilize different facets of the wide range of club facilities and programs. I will look forward to sharing what knowledge and experience I have developed in my business and personal life to continue to support the club in the future.

2015 BOARD OF GOVERNORS AND SUPERVISORS ELECTION

Supervisor CandidateJim Clark

I am happy to run for supervisor of the Board of Governors at the ACC and feel I am particularly well qualified for the role.

Extensive Experience:I have served for the past seven years as a member of the Board of Governors, and for six years on the Executive Committee in the role of Secretary. That makes me the current longest acting board member and the longest active member of the Executive Committee. If elected as a Supervisor, I can draw upon that experience to provide some continuity and a historical perspective

for the new Board.

I Focus on the Human Interaction Side of the Club.I tend to be more focused on the software than the hardware of the club, which recently means chairing both the HR Committee, and the Social Committee. I will continue to apply my expertise in facilitation and organization development by designing and/or delivering various programs for the Heads of Department and the Board, including our exploration of what it means to achieve the Club’s vision of being, “The Best Club in Asia.”

Ability to Represent Various Voices in the MembershipMy family and I use the club in a variety of ways, which helps to improve my ability to represent the diversity of Members at the American Club.

26

Governor CandidateRichard Yin

I have been a long-term member of ACC since 1984. My bio two years ago stated that if elected it would be my aim to provide a bridge between the members, the board of governors and the management team. Having the privilege to serve as governor for the past two years, I have strived to follow through on that aim to make contributions to ACC – the place I consider as home away from home.

Thanks to effective teamwork, our Club has accomplished a lot during this period. We now have updated facilities, sound financial conditions, growing usage rates and an increasing membership

waiting list. In addition, during this term I have also been serving as chairperson of the MIS Committee which, consists of both Club Membership and Club Management, meets regularly on MIS and ICT related matters. I am glad to report to you that we have made many achievements including:

● Online booking for Member Events, Racquet Courts and Dining Reservations.● Online management of Library books and DVDs.● Upgrade of Club computers to Windows 7 and Office 2010.● POS equipment upgrade.● Improvements in IT backup and system/hardware disaster recovery provisions.● Upgrade of Club’s projectors and purchase of large screen, enabling provision of Club’s popular “Poolside Movie-Night” events.● Improvements in kitchen purchasing system and processes.● Support for procurement and installation of new Club-wide CCTV system.

We have also been very pleased to see a continued year-on-year improvement in satisfaction scores for IT-related topics in the annual Membership Survey. As for my career, after obtaining a Master of Science degree in Business Administration from Central Missouri State University, I worked for Westinghouse and Ciba-Geigy in the States, served as Chairman and Country Manager of EDS Taiwan, Executives of the ACER Group and the TECO Group, Chairman of Information Service Industry Association of R.O.C. (CISA), and Chairman of Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO). I have been participating in various public and community services.

I believe a Governor should represent and address the concerns and needs of members with different cultural backgrounds, different lengths of membership, and different amounts of time spent in the Club, etc. I intend to continue being the bridge between the members, the board of governors and the management team. Working together, I hope we can make ACC even better and be the long lasting premier club in Taiwan.

My family and I use the club 2 to 4 days a week.I am a parent of an 10 and 15 year old who have “grown up in The Club.”I am a long-term permanent resident of Taiwan who speaks Chinese, and who 17 years ago married into a Taiwanese family.I am an American abroad.I am an entrepreneur and businessman and care about the quality of the meeting and banquet facilities. We at the club often and are motivated to preserve a high value for money from the club to the membership. My daughter plays tennis. My wife is in the gym two to three times a week.I play in the Squash league. We attend many of the social events for both families and adults.

I look forward to translating the wealth of experience I have gained from being a Board and Executive Committee Member to the role of Supervisor and would appreciate you support.

ACC is a place to have fun

I don’t know about you, but ACC has been a place to have fun for me since I was ten years old. This is the place to go on weekends and in between mind boggling tasks during the week. So I have a very strong desire to keep it this way for families and empty nesters (which I will be in four years).

By fun I mean being able to enjoy great tasting AND healthy food. Being able to enjoy the sports facilities, the fitness classes, and the best bar in Taiwan with member friends (many times also TAS classmates). All of this enjoyment requires the employ-ment of devoted professionals. And to keep both them and members happy. I intend to use my background and experience listed here to help us achieve this goal.

Education:University of California at Santa Barbara: B.A. in Economics (1991-1995)Waseda University -School of Commerce: M.S. in Business Management with emphasis on Human Resources (1996-1998)

Experience:AMC Theater: Manager (1998-2000)Epson Corporation: Senior Sourcing Specialist (2000-2003)Happy Fins Corporation /Hsingta Cement Corporation/ Yang Family Charity Foundation: CEO (2003-current)

As people who know me put it, “Richard is not a good sales person nor is he interested in selling. He runs his eco aqua farm business to share the fun of providing sustainably produced foods.” As is the way I run my own business, I believe in providing a choice for people. I’m not going to waste your time by listing here what I can do or will do, or bore you with a list of my past achievements. I’m not the smartest, but I like to use my hands to accomplish things instead of using my mouth. I would love to be able to keep the magic going in this club. But the choice is yours.

Thanks to Todd and the nominating committee for choosing me as a candidate for this position. I greatly appreciate the efforts of current and past board members, club members, and the management team and staff.

Let us step up on the work and fun for the best club in Asia!

Colors of Taiwan,Omnipresent inPhotos from Yu-wen-Tseng

ave you ever noticed the many Taiwanese Folk art paintings displayed

in ACC’s lobby and Terrace? Do you know these paintings are from the first artist in Taiwan to infuse western artistic elements into Taiwan-ese folk art? Do you know this renowned artist has worked with ACC for over two decades?

He is Mr. Yu-wen-Tseng, with over 40 years art experience who has had New Taiwan Art Exhibitions in Tokyo’s Ueno Museum, and National Art Center. Even the director of France BNP Bank Mr. Dimeglio is his fan, having collected over ten paintings from Mr. Tseng. In Taiwan, you can find his art pieces in the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Gigabyte, Cathy Back and …ACC!!

Mr. Yu-wen-Tseng grew-up in the small town of Tainan where he heard and witnessed the many talents of the local folk activities, puppet folk stories and temple celebrations, all of which are reflected in Mr Tseng’s paintings on different mediums. His paintings express the sound, the light, the smoke, the fireworks and the images of the busy fairs held in the countryside temples; and they also display the charisma of the ordinary people on the stage.

In recent years, artist Yu-Wen Tseng has created a new (or unique) method and has painted a series of Taiwanese gods on bamboo paper, which are used in the temples. His presentations strongly represent the grassroots character-istics of Taiwan, such as the Taiwan-ese temple culture, where it is common to see Taoist mediums go into dancing trances - shocking scenes to the outsider.

H ACC

31

Mr. Tseng has introduced the mysterious creation of brush rhythm and in doing so, he has joined the spirit of East Asian water ink painting with the colors of Western oil printing. His expectation is that once a complete unity is achieved, a new vision will have been created. Whether it is contrast, emptiness, fullness “flying white” or falling brush strokes, all reveal the beauty of writing. Several kinds of prayer talismans attached to door gods, theater characters, flowers, bird paintings, represent his use of oils and water inks, and crazy brush strokes that are the key to traditional Chinese impressionist painting, all symboliz-ing the characteristics of Oriental art.

Mr. Tseng’s hometown, Tainan, is filled with innumerable temples, Kung Temple’s solemnity, the Matsu Temple’s ornateness, the Kuan Kung Temple’s martial air, and the temple of the Five Concubine’s Deity; where each Temple’s devotees pray for peace. It is this Folk religion that has a strong appeal and attraction for Mr Tseng, which is reflected in his art. Among his works, the most commonly painted deities are the “Fu Lu Shou” - these three gods of wealth, rank, and longevity often appear at the center of temple rooflines above the sweeping “Swallowtail” eave.

Mr. Tseng realized that Taiwanese art world could find its new life in recognizing its cultural origins. By absorb-ing Western civilization and culture, combining it with the colors of Chinese culture and thoughts and blend-ing folk customs into his paintings; Artist Tseng has introduced a new art philosophy. By taking the moderniza-tion of traditional culture, and the Taiwanization of modern history, there is an independent and autonomous thinking that cannot be concealed by outside cultures. Mr. Tseng has obviously stood up for his own land and spoken out for it!

Tseng is not only a Chinese artist, but also a Taiwanese painter skilled at creating distinct contrasts - always wondering how to break through the techniques of oil painting. He wishes to have less realism and leave more abstraction in his paintings, without losing the intrinsic nature of oil painting.

We believe after seeing his paintings, you will absolutely remember the strong “Taiwan Color” recreating a special folk custom characteristic and the abstract streaks. We are also very happy to share with you, that Tseng will arrange his personal exhibition at the Club in November so Members and guests can again see more of his artwork.

Next time, when you pass through the ACC corridor or in the Chicago Room, please stop and enjoy the New Taiwan Art, where you may find more folklore and characters in Yu-Wen Tseng’s paintings!

Vitamin A There are plenty of fall and winter foods high in this vitamin. Bright red and orange fruits, and vegetables are full of colorful compounds called carotenoids. Your body converts carotenoids to vitamin A, which helps maintaining muco-sal surfaces in the nose and lung that trap bacteria and viruses. Carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato, and cantaloupe are high in carotenoids. Animal sources such as, liver, eel, tuna, and milk are high in vitamin A.

Vitamin DVitamin D is one essential vitamin that doesn’t need to be ingested. Our skin produces it naturally when exposed to sunlight. This vitamin has shown to help the body signal an antimicrobial response against some bacteria. Foods such as salmon, mackerel, tuna, fortified milk and cereals are all good sources of vitamin D. The most convenient way is to step out and soak up that autumn sun!

Vitamin E Studies have shown that an increased intake of vitamin E does increase antibody response to some viruses. This strong antioxidant can help fight off infections and help repair cellular damage during the recovery process. Go ahead and snack on a handful of almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, or sunflower seeds.

Selenium Selenium is a potent antioxidant and carries out biological effects by being incorporated into certain proteins and becoming selenoproteins. Selenoproteins play a crucial role in inflammation and immune responses. Mushroom, oysters, garlic, Brazil nuts, and tuna are some foods high in selenium.

Zinc Zinc is another mineral that is found in oysters, crab, lean meats, poultry, and beans. Similar to selenium, it helps fight infections and heal wounds by playing a role in the body’s inflammatory response.

A closer look at some of the major micronutrient players:

“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food” – Hippocrates

FFlu season is fast approaching. Cold weather doesn’t seem to be the culprit, but staying indoors more does increase the spread of germs from person to person. It’s impossible to predict the nature of this year’s viruses, but we can take preventative measures. Scientifically, it doesn’t make much sense to say a specific type of food, or supplement is “immunity boosting”. However, current research findings have helped elucidate how the diet can play a role in how well we fend off pathogens.

In our society, micronutrient malnutrition has become a problem. This occurs when caloric needs are met, but the diet is deficient in essential vitamins and minerals. A poor diet has been shown to make one more vulnerable to infections. I’m sure many of you have told someone or have heard someone tell you to eat more foods rich in vitamin C to prevent a cold. Unfortunately, there is no one magical food bullet. No matter how many lemon waters we drink, our bodies need a little more ammunition to protect us from those microscopic monsters. The immune system depends on a balanced mix of vitamins and minerals, good hygiene, and lifestyle habits to run smoothly.

Adequate intake of these vitamins and minerals may help our bodies fend off or fight pathogens. There is no evidence that taking mega doses of these micronutrients in supplement form has benefits.
