Ancient Histria or Istros (Thracian river god, Danube), was a Greek colony (or polis) on the Black Sea coast, established by Milesian settlers to trade with the native Getae.

Histria Archeological Museum

The Histria Museum, founded in 1982, exhibits some of these finds. The excavation project and site also features prominently in the film The Ister.

It became the first Greek town on the present day Romanian territory.

Scymnus of Chios (c. 110 BC), the Greek geographer and poet, dated it to 630 BC. Eusebius of Caesarea, some centuries later, dated its founding to 657 – 656 BC, at the time of the 33rd Olympic Games.

The earliest documented currency on Romanian territory was an 8-gram silver drachma, issued in Histria in the year 480 BC.

Thistle and Bugs (Ciulini)

The Hellenistic period was ended by Marcus Antonius who was in charge of the eastern Roman government, and was defeated by Octavian at Actium. Around 30 AD, Histria became a Roman town.

During the Roman period from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD, temples were built for the Roman gods, besides a public bath and houses for the wealthy. Altogether, it was in continuous existence for some 12 centuries, starting with the Archaic Greek period up to the Roman-Byzantine period.

The ruins of the settlement were first

identified in 1868 by French archaeologist

Ernest Desjardins.

Archaeological excavations

were started by Vasile Pârvan in

1914

The Enisala Fortress (often referred to as Heracleea Fortress) is a 12th to 14th century medieval fortress sitting high on a hill overlooking Lake Razim (Razelm) and a vast field of reed grass and water channels, in Tulcea County. Histria is nearby with seven millennia of civilizations layered onto one site - as are other ancient sites.

The Danube Delta is the second largest river delta in Europe, after the Volga Delta, and is the best preserved on the continent. The greater part of the Danube Delta lies in Romania (Tulcea county), while its northern part, on the left bank of the Chilia arm, is situated in Ukraine (Odessa Oblast).

The waters of the Danube, which flow into the Black Sea, form the largest and best preserved of Europe's deltas. The Danube delta hosts over 300 species of birds as well as 45 freshwater fish species in its numerous lakes and marshes

The Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) is a member of the grebe family of water birds.

The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve has the third largest biodiversity in the world (over 5,500 flora and fauna species), exceeded only by the Great Barrier Reef in Australia and the Galapagos Archipelago in Ecuador.

A total area of 679,000 ha of the delta is under legal protection including floodplains and marine areas. The core of the reserve (312,400 ha) was designated as a “World Natural Heritage Site” in 1991.

About 3600 feral horses live in the Danube Delta, 2000 in the Letea nature reserve, where on one hand, they are among the last remaining "wild" (feral) horses living at large on the European continent, but are also deemed to be a threat to the flora of the forest, including to some plants on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species

Dervent monastery

2000 years ago, Saint Andrew preached Christianity in the south of Dobrudja, together with his disciples. At some point, four of his disciples were stoned to death; four stone crosses stand today in the place of their martyrdom.

Along centuries, the crosses proved to be endowed with curind power addressing both corporal and mental diseases.

A Healing Spring is in the nut-tree orchard of the monastery. According to the legend, it is owed to St. Andrew who passed by the spot of the present-day monastery, and prayed for water, since he and his companions were thirsty. When he thrust his staff into the ground, water would spring up, and they say that those who drink or sprinkle it over theirs bodies in good faith are protected against evil and disease.

The Mircea is a three masted barque, built in 1938 in Hamburg by the Blohm & Voss shipyard as a training vessel for the Romanian Navy.

Her design is based on the successful plans of the Gorch Fock. The ship is named after the Wallachian Prince Mircea the Elder

Found in 1931 a tomb of a Dacian prince not far form Histria (Dobruja). In the outer chamber were found the skeletons of horses, with the hammered silver plaques of their rich harness. The inner chamber contained the entire silver treasure of the prince himself. One of the vases is inscribed "Cotys", prince's name. The tomb and treasure are from 4th century BCE.
