luCerne feStIvAl ACADemy 2011

the luCerne feStIvAl ACADemy 2011 will include two major symphonic programs featuring works ranging from maurice ravel («le tombeau de Couperin»), Alban Berg («three Orchestral Pieces», Op. 6), Olivier messiaen («Chronochromie»), and Arnold Schoenberg («variations for Orchestra», Op. 31) to Pierre Boulez («Éclat/multiples»), Bernd Alois Zimmermann («Photop-tosis»), and marc-André Dalbavie («Concertate il suono»). In addition, two ensemble programs and a visual-acoustic improvisation project with the musician, composer, and visual artist Charlotte Hug will be the focus.

«nachtplasmen» is the name for Hug’s concept of scores that fill an acoustic space and resemble a seismograph, inspiring eyes and ears alike as new and exciting forms, gestures, and sounds are developed.

As part of a tribute to composer Karlheinz Stockhausen, works for electronics, solo instruments, ensemble, and orchestra will be heard in a wide variety of stages of development.

the luCerne feStIvAl ACADemy will set itself an ambitious goal by preparing a performance of «Pli selon pli», a work by Pierre Boulez with which they will tour europe as part of a collaborative project with the ensemble intercontemporain.

A master Class for young conductors will grapple with the «variations for Orchestra», Op. 31, by Arnold Schoenberg and with «Éclat» by Pierre Boulez.

the Academy forum series will also enhance and enrich the Academy’s activities in summer 2011.

the roles of the individual and the collective continually change: during daily life, at dusk, at night, while we sleep, and while we dream. translated into artistic terms, this means that the initially centralized perspective of the or-chestra playing under a conductor becomes dissolved with the appearance of light signals – called Son-Icons (a graphic form of musical notation) – which enable new forms of interaction. finally a momentum develops from all these elements on various levels. each performance triggers moments of astonish-ment for the musicians and audience alike.

Born in 1925, Pierre Boulez studied piano with Olivier messiaen, Andrée vaurabourg, and rené leibowitz. In 1946 he became music Director of the renaud-Barrault theatre Company and in 1953 he founded the contemporary music series at the Petit marigny theatre, which developed into the renowned and influential Domaine musical. During the late 1950’s, he gave courses at the Darmstadt summer school and at the instigation of Paul Sacher at the Basel music Academy. In 1976 he was appointed Professor at the Collège de france, a position he held until retirement in 1995.In 1967 Pierre Boulez became Principal Guest Conductor of the Cleveland Or-chestra, later accepting the positions of Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra and music Director of the new york Philharmonic. regular concerts with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, of which he is currently Principal Guest Conductor. In 1976 he founded the ensemble intercontemporain, and established the Institut de recherche et Coordination Acoustique/musique (IrCAm) in Paris the following year. In 2003 Pierre Boulez founded the luCerne feStIvAl ACADemy. Boulez’s life and work not only represent virtually the entire spectrum of con-temporary music during the second half of the twentieth century, he is also a “shaker and mover” of almost Herculean vigor. It is thus all the more surpris-ing that with his seemingly inexhaustible store of energy he always finds the strength to be quiet, patient, and attentive. He is – horribile dictu – a teacher of the old school: a tough questioner, an astute listener, and a stern taskmas-ter, but never ruthless or egoistic. this is precisely what makes the Grand Old man of contemporary music an ideal teacher for the up-and-coming musi-cians of the luCerne feStIvAl ACADemy: nowhere else, and from no one else, can young musicians learn and experience contemporary music with greater authority and authenticity.

the ensemble intercontemporain (eIC) was founded by Pierre Boulez in 1976 to perform and promote twentieth-century music. It consists of thirty-one solo instrumentalists and is currently conducted by the musical director Susanna mälkki. the group gives about seventy concerts each season in france and abroad. In addition to performances with a conductor, the musi-cians have also established several chamber ensembles. their repertoire in-cludes more than 1,700 works from the first half of the twentieth century and many important pieces written after 1950. In collaboration with the Institut de recherche et Coordination Acoustique/musique (IrCAm), the eIC is also active in the field of synthetic sound generation. Since 1995 the ensemble has been based in the Cité de la musique in Paris. It advances the cause of crea-tive music by holding workshops, readings, and open rehearsals and by organizing classes for young professional musicians and composers in con-junction with the Paris Conservatoire, the Cité de la musique, and various summer academies.

Born in Zurich in 1965. Charlotte Hug completed her studies in fine arts and music and received various distinctions and commissions. She worked as «artist in residence» in london, Paris, Cork capital of culture in 2005 and Berlin and was awarded the city of Zurich prize for composition in 2006. She is known for her solo performances in distinctive locations such as the ice tunnels of the rhône glacier, the half demolished bunker in Berlin, the House of Detention, a 250 year old former prison in farringdon in london, the hot heal-ing sulphur springs beneath the former luxury hotel of verenahof in Baden, Switzerland or the dockyard in Coph on the Irish Atlantic coast.Hug seeks to develop instrumental techniques to their fullest possible extent, which includes the «soft bow technique», by means of which she can play up to eight voices on her instrument. She also specializes in combining the sounds of viola and voice. In the visual arena, as well as in the musical con-text, her sound-drawings «Son-Icons» have found international recognition. Hug also composes with graphic musical notation. these have resulted in spatial and video scores for a range of works from solo to orchestra pieces. She usually directs the orchestral works herself using a conduction language based on the techniques of Butch morris, which she learned at the london Improvisers Orchestra and further developed on her own account.Charlotte Hug is member of the «london Improvisers Orchestra», and founded the «Stellari String Quartet». She gives lectures and master classes on improv-isation, scenic music and performance, graphic notation and room installa-tions. Alongside her activities in international exhibitions, Hug is also fully active as a concert performer, soloist, composer and conductor of her own works at major festivals in europe, the uSA and Canada.
