(IGCSE)
SUBJECTS SELECTION
BOOKLET FOR
YEAR 10 & 11
2
METHOD OF CHOOSING SUBJECTS
The total number of subjects that a student has to study to register will be 9. The exam will be taken under
the IGCSE-EDEXCEL INTERNATIONAL.
Every student has to study the compulsory subjects i.e. English Language, Mathematics and One second
Language.
Please note
Additional Mathematics, e.g. Pure Maths, is useful for students planning to pursue Mathematics or
Engineering at higher level and assists in ‘A’ Level Maths. Similarly, Human Biology is useful for students
planning to pursue a Medical career or Applied Medicine. Human Biology will only be offered to students
who take Biology.
Students may reconsider their subject choices and make changes only (1 weeks) after the first Term –
Midterm Holiday . Thereafter, they will not be allowed to drop or change any subject for which they have
registered.
General Guidelines
The final decision will be based on the student’s aptitude and performance in the relevant subjects. You
are advised to study your child’s performance in the past examinations.
Guide your child to choose subjects are not only based on career choices but also on his / her ability to
cope with the demands of the subjects chosen. Subject teachers should be consulted. Encourage your
child to choose subjects he/she enjoys and does well in class/ examinations.
Discuss options with professionals in the various fields and study the job market trend before making a
decision. The Key Stage Coordinators are always available for help.
Discus with your child’s class teacher / subject teacher about his / her aptitude and capability of handling a
subject, not only at IGCSE but higher level also. Subject choice should be in line with the AS and A2 levels,
in order to help them achieve their career goals.
Though it is easier to make a change from the Science Stream to the business Stream for their ‘A’ level
studies, it is difficult and unadvisable to change from Business to Science.
Choose subjects that will complement each other and help the students in their choice of careers.

Computer science graduates work in traditional high technology companies (IBM, Raytheon, EMC, Sun, Cisco,
Microsoft, RSA, etc.) and numerous start-ups, but also work to bring you better services: finance, consulting and
insurance (Fidelity, Mass Mutual, State Street Bank, Keane, SAS, PeopleSoft, PricewaterhouseCoopers,
Accenture, KPMG, Lehman Brothers); information and communications (Google, Yahoo, Akami, Verizon,
Comcast, Motorola, AT&T, Alcatel ); healthcare, medical devices and pharmaceuticals (Partners Healthcare,
Boston
Scientific, Abbott Laboratories, Merck & Co., Allergan); assisting people (iRobot, Kurzweil, Staples, etc.);
marketing and sales (eBay, Amazon, Orvis, etc.); entertainment and hospitality (media companies, travel agents,
hotels, airlines).
Additional information
Students will follow the BTEC IT qualification in parallel with IGCSE ICT. This will afford them an additional award
equivalent to one GCSE grade. This course is portfolio based.
Physics QUALIFICATION TYPE: IGCSE
COURSE CODE: 4PH1
Overview
The course offers students the opportunity to experience physics within the context of their general education.
What you need to know, or be able to do, before taking this course
24
It is absolutely essential that a physicist be proficient with mathematics. You don't have to know everything -
that's impossible - but you do have to be comfortable with mathematical concepts and how to apply them,
especially algebra, geometry/trigonometry, and calculus.
Physics is very math intensive and if you find that you dislike mathematics, perhaps you will want to pursue
other educational options.
Among other things, you should be familiar with the scientific method and the other tools physicists use. In a
broader sense, you can learn problem-solving in non-science contexts. Practical problem-solving skills are
important, for example a student on a Duke of Edinburgh expedition may have to think quickly to resolve a
situation that would come up during a camping trip, such as how to get the tents to actually stay upright in
thunderstorms or heavy wind.
If you want to study physics consider doing logic puzzles. Join the debate team. Play chess or video games with a
strong problem-solving element.
Anything that you can do to train your mind to organize data, look for patterns, and apply information to
complex situations will be valuable in laying the foundation for physical thinking that you will require.
What you will study
• Forces and motion
• Electricity
• Waves
• Energy resources and energy transfers
• Solids, liquids and gases
• Magnetism and electromagnetism
• Radioactivity and particles
• Astrophysics
How you will be assessed
The Edexcel International GCSE in Physics comprises two externally assessed papers:
• Physics Paper 1
• Physics Paper 2
Physics Paper 1
Externally assessed: 61.1% of the total qualification marks
The paper is assessed through a 2-hour examination paper set and marked by Edexcel. The total number of
marks is 110.
Physics Paper 2
Externally assessed: 38.9% of the total qualification marks
The paper is assessed through a 1-hour 15 minutes examination paper set and marked by Edexcel. The total
number of marks is 70.
Coursework / Controlled Assessment None.
25
Progression
The Edexcel International GCSE in Physics provides a sound foundation for progression to Edexcel GCE Advanced
Subsidiary (AS) and Advanced Level in Physics, and other comparable post-16 qualifications.
Some jobs with a background in Physics are: aerospace engineering, electronics/IT software, instrumentation,
telecommunications, electrical, nuclear fuel processing, manufacturing, petrochemicals/oil, transport, publishing,
information systems engineering, construction, and chemical engineering.
Psychology QUALIFICATION TYPE: GCSE
COURSE CODE: 5PS01, 5PS02
Overview
The course gives students the opportunity to experience chemistry within the context of their general education.
What you need to know, or be able to do, before taking this course
Studying Psychology at GCSE does not require any prerequisites although it is recommended that you have to be
comfortable writing essays. You would also have to be good at analysing and evaluating experiments and
studies. Psychology requires students to be able to write methodically and logically a sequence of events or
procedures of case studies. You will need to be able to think out of the box though the course helps you to
sharpen this particular skill. You also need to have an open mind and be able to debate and argue constructively
and logically.
What you will study
Section A: Compulsory topics
Students must study all topics in this section. These topics will be examined in Paper 1. The contexts in these
topics will also be used in in Paper 2 for research methods (Topic 11: Research methods – How do you carry out
psychological research?).
Section B: Optional topics
Students must study two of the topics in this section. These topics will be examined in Paper 2.
26
Section C: Research methods
Students must study the topic in this section. The knowledge and understanding of research methods will be
assessed in both papers.
How you will be assessed?
Paper 1: 1PS0/01
Written examination: 1 hour and 45 minutes 55% of the qualification 98 marks.
Students may be asked to apply their knowledge and understanding of research methods and how studies are
conducted in new contexts. Any detail students need to know about a study will be detailed in the question.
Paper 2: 1PS0/02
Written examination: 1 hour and 20 minutes 45% of the qualification 79 marks.
Students’ knowledge and understanding of research methods will be assessed in depth in this section. The
contexts used in question papers for this topic will draw on the contexts used in the compulsory topics for Paper
1.
Coursework/Controlled Assessment None.
Progression
Supports progression to GCE A Level Psychology and complements other Level 2 and 3 social science courses, for
example Sociology.
Some of the top occupations that employ those who have done Psychology: Top- and mid-level management
and administration, Sales, Social work, other management occupations
