SADBHAVANA DIWAS PLEDGE

"I take this solemn pledge that I will work for the emotional oneness and harmony of all the

people of India regardless of caste, region, religion or language.

I further pledge that, I shall resolve all differences among us through dialogue and

constitutional means without resorting to violence. "

SADBHAVANA DIWAS REPORT

“Sadbhawna means feeling of oneness for all fellow beings.”

The Birth Anniversary of late Prime Minister of India, Shri Rajiv Gandhi was observed as "Sadbhavana

Diwas" on August 20, nationwide every year. The theme of "Sadbhavana Diwas" was to promote National

Integration and communal harmony among the people of all religions and languages. Goodwill towards

everyone and eschewing violence are the motto of the "Sadbhavana Diwas".

The Principal Sir Dr. N Sengottaiyan has given the inspiring speech asking the students to inculcate the

feeling of oneness among them. She told the students to have a feeling of respect for others irrespective of

caste, language, region and religion which will help them to maintain a healthy relationship which will further

strengthen our nation.

After the inspiring words from Principal, Students and Faculty took the Sadbhavana day pledge which

simply states that we will work for the emotional oneness and harmony of all the people of India regardless of

caste, region, religion or language. Students further pledged that they shall resolve all differences among

themselves through dialogue and constitutional means without resorting to violence.

Engineer‟s Day 2018 - Report

On 15th

September, Engineer‟s Day was celebrated every year as an event because it is the birthday of

legendary engineer Dr.Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (M.Visvesvaraya). On this occasion, Mr.Raja, Asst.Prof.,

Mechanical Engineering, delivered welcome address on Engineer‟s Day. Dr.Prabhakar Kammar, Professor,

Mechanical Engineering, given a special talk on Engineer‟s Day celebration. Dr.A.A.Powly Thomas, Pricipal,

GCEM, delivered the presidential speech and she quoted the importance of celebrating the Engineer‟s Day on 15

th September every year. The Chief Guest introduction was given by Dr.T.R.Chinnusamy, Professor,

Mechanical Engineering. Dr.V.Dillibabu, DRDS, Scientist, Gas Turbine Research Establishment, DRDO,

Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India, Bengaluru, was the Chief Guest for the Engineer‟s Day. He has given a presentation on “Socio Technological Perspective for Engineering Students”. He highlighted the importance of an engineer for the benefit of the society and quoted “Scientists invented the world that already exists, but

ENGINEER‟S create the world that never existed; so, proud to be an Engineer”. All the students and faculty members are inspired and motivated to do innovative projects in their respective fields. Finally, vote of thanks

given by Mr.Shivashankar, Asst. Prof., Mechanical Engineering. He has highlighted the support given by

Dr.C.Prabhakar, Director, Gopalan Institutions, for providing financial support and Mr.Balachandar,

General Manager for providing the amphitheater facility for the conduct of event. A special thanks to

Dr.A.A.Powly Thomas, Principal for the conduct of event. Finally, he thanked all faculty members, staff and

students for their constant support in the arrangement of event.

A REPORT ON WORLD HEALTHY DAY

“Food Habits For Healthy Living”

As per the circular recived from AICTE on 3/11/2018. Government of india is celebrating 150th

year birth

anniversary for Mahatma Gandhi for a period of 2 years ie 2nd

october 2018 to 2nd

October 2020 both national

and international level. In this regard food safety and standards authority of india and, Ministry of health and

family welfare has launched“ Eat right India” movement. To make this movement really effective and

informative it is directed to conduct a awareness program in the institutions to promote healthy living among

the students and faculty members.

In view of this “Eating habits for healthy living” was organized in our Gopalan College of engineering and

management in seminar hall on 20/11/2018 from 2.30 to 3.30 pm by the Youth Red cross GCEM, Bangalore.

All the first year students were made to assemble in seminar hall.

Program started with a welcome speech by Mr. Lokesh.M Asst professor, mechanical engineering department

Gcem , followed with inaugural speech of this awareness program by the Principal of Gcem Dr. AA Powly

Thomas. To organize this program team of doctors from Bangalore Baptist hospital with the association of

Lions club member was invited to make the importance of healthy diet, who gave the information of good

foods and its benefits in every individual diet , and followed by a speech and presentation for a healthy food

style by Dietitian and Nutritionist from Bangalore Baptist hospital Dr.Shilpa, she emphasized what and when

to eat, by giving the example to the students who generally missing their breakfast in morning hours will be

affected by their concentration level in the morning class hours, A healthy diet should include a wide variety of

nutrious foods for sufficient intake of all nutrients including vitamins and minerals like plenty of cereals, fruits,

vegetables has to be added in required quantity. Avoid of taking salt and sugar, reduced fat milk, junk food and

other dairy products and also the importance of adequate amount of drinking water per day with all this

information Dr.Shilpa concluded her speech that healthy diet is solution to many of our health care

problems.

The invitees were then presented with the mementoes by the Principal and were facilitated. The coordinator of

the program then presented vote of thanks to the gatherings. At the end of the session, the students dispersed

with a better understanding about the importance of Food habits for Healthy living.

REPORT ON NATIONAL EDUCATION DAY

NSS unit of GCEM cell has observed National Education day on 12th November 2018, as a remembrance of

the Birth Anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. Maulana Abul Kalam Azad was a great freedom fighter

and eminent educationist. He was responsible for setting up of apex bodies such as AICTE and UGC.IITs, IISc

and School of Architecture and Planning were also his brainchild. One of the interesting facts about Maulana

Azad is that even though he did not receive formal schooling, he was well versed in Urdu, Persian, Arabic, and

Hindi. He was also a scholar of mathematics, philosophy, world history, and science. Maulana Azad was also a

prominent journalist of his time and championed the cause of Indian Nationalist movement. Hence the

Government of India with a resolution dated September 11, 2008, has declared November 11, the birth

anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Union Minister of Education, as National Education Day.

Dr.Powly Thomas, Principal, GCEM, and Dr.Karuna Murthy Academic Administrator, Gopalan Foundation

addressed the students and spoke about the importance of education, how it shapes our personality and our

future. Around 100 students participated in the event.

Anti-terrorism day is observed to spread the message of peace and humanity. Terrorism is increasing at

a rapid pace in the 21st century and fighting against requires various measures that needs to be adopted

by the government as well as individuals. One such way is to celebrate and take oath on the anti-

terrorism day whereby all citizens of India shall abide by oath of not indulging into any form of

terrorism and violence. For this, NSS GCEM organized an event on 21st May 2019.The day begun by

the introductory speech of Prof D.Sreenivasa Reddy, NSS Coordinator, GCEM. followed by the

address note of Prof Dr. N Sengottaiyan, Principal, GCEM, and Prof Dr.Shankar B.S, Vice-Principal,

HOD(Civil),GCEM. After this Honourable Principal Dr. N Sengottaiyan, of the institute took pledge

which aimed to uphold and promote peace, social harmony and understanding among all fellow human

beings and fight the forces of disruption threatening human lives and values.

The Principal Dr. N Sengottaiyan,GCEM also addressed the audience in which he focused on the

effects of terrorism on the development of our economy and also suggested that we as citizens of India

should not indulge ourselves into terrorist and violence activities. We should stop these activities

wherever they are visible and through our speech motivate every individual to fight against these

activities. He encouraged each individual present in the event to work for the betterment of our country

by keeping ourselves motivated always to work towards the development of our county. The event

organizer Prof, D.Sreenivasa Reddy, NSS Coordinator,GCEM has expressed his views. He mentioned

that it is not right to encourage or shelter the anti-social elements in our society and we all should

become a little more pro-active in terms of keeping a close watch on our surroundings and reporting

things to police if we observe anything suspicious. The pledge was administered with the objective to

wean away the youth from terrorism and the cult of violence by highlighting the sufferings of the

common people. The event ended by the vote of thanks by Dr.Maharani HOD,Basic

Sciences,GCEM,She thanked the august audience for their heartfelt contribution to the success of the

event. In her speech she mentioned about the wound of Mumbai Terrorist Attack, i.e. 26/11 which is

still not healed and the world is witnessing an alarming rate of increase in such activities. The event

ended with the heartfelt homage to the victims who lost their lives in various terrorist attacks and to

stand united as a nation to eliminate the occurrences of such incidents ever in the future. The event

witnessed 130 members which included faculty, staff members and students.

Report on „Rally for Rivers‟

„Rally for Rivers‟ is a nationwide awareness campaign to revive our rivers. Rally for Rivers was a

campaign crafted by Sadhguru to bring awareness to the people of India that our rivers are depleting

at alarming levels and that our rivers needs to revived by planting 1 km of trees on either side of the

rivers. This program was conducted on 09-09-2017 in GCEM at Amphitheatre along with Isha

Foundation.All teaching and non teaching members and GCEM students participated in this

program and students participated in the debate and power point presentation on Rally for Rivers

was done by the Isha Foundation.

NATIONAL UNITY DAY-31/10/2018

NSS Unit of GCEM organized the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas in the college campus on 31st October 2018.

Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) is to be celebrated on 31 October every year as annual

commemoration of the birthday of the Iron Man of India Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the founding

leaders of Republic of India. The intent is to pay tribute to Sardar, who was instrumental in keeping India

united. The official statement for Rashtriya Ekta Diwas by the Home Ministry of India cites that the National

Unity Day “will provide an opportunity to re-affirm the inherent strength and resilience of our nation to

withstand the actual and potential threats to the unity, integrity and security of our country. National Unity

Day celebrates the birthday of Patel because, during his term as Home Minister of India, he is credited for

the integration of over 550 independent princely states into India from 1947- 49 by Independence Act

(1947).

Highlights of the day at Gopalan college of Engineering and Management (GCEM) included the Unified

Bharat rally, a speech on the importance of Unity,and taking the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge by the staff

and students of Gopalan college of Engineering and Management.

1. The Unified Bharat Rally: As a token of commemorating the day of Unity, enthusiastic students held a

banner proclaiming the day and Rally around the campus and Hoodi Village serving as a reminder to

everyone on the all-important factor of unity between us.

2. Address by the Dr.Powely Thomas, Principal,GCEM : The Principal spoke on the significance of unity

with a simple story in her initimitable style and held the audience‟s attention. 3. A Speech on the Significance and Meaning of Unity: Prof. D.Raja,Assistant Professor, Mechanical

Department– Learning and Development gave an interactive talk filled with anecdotes from the past when

India was attaining its present form. He gave relevant examples from day to day life to emphasize the

meaning of unity and why all of us need to work for it

4. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas Pledge In the end, Master of the Ceremony, Dr.Powely Thomas, Principal,GCEM administered the following pledge

to all the participants : I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself to preserve the unity, integrity and security of

the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen. I take this pledge in the

spirit of unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of late Sardar

Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my own contribution to ensure internal security of my

country.

VTU, under the aegis of NSS and Red Cross cells of VTU, had organized"#Slow Down &

Save Lives" as part of UN Global Road Safety Week on 12th

May 2017,which consisted of an

awareness program and pledge taking ceremony.

Regarding this, VTU had sent a circular to The Principal of GCEM containing information

pertaining to the above mentioned event.

The principal Dr. A. A. Powly Thomas, directed Mr. Lokesh M, Asst. prof of Mechanical

Engineering, GCEM to take in charge on the above mentioned regard and had granted permission

to utilize the amphitheatre for this purpose. The later was then cleaned and student coordinators of

Red Cross cell of GCEM decorated with road signs and slogans to capture the essence of the event.

The Chief Guests arrived by 11:15 A.M and were lead to the board room to wait for the event to

start. The chief Guests then discussed the agenda of the day‟s event with The Principal and The Academic Administrator Dr R Karunaoorthy. They then proceeded to the Amphitheatre.

The part of the program by VTU, to be held at our college, began by 11:30 A.M. on the 12thof May

2017. All students and faculty had assembled in the college amphitheatre with the aid of the HODs

of each department in an orderly fashion and occupied the seats while expecting to learn great

things from the chief guests of honour-

Mr.V Samuel Henry, Deputy Chief Traffic Warden, Whitefield Special Division who

has an unquantifiable amount of knowledge and experience.

Mrs. Manju VikasMehra, Traffic Warden, Whitefield who shares and equally vast

amount of experience.

The event began with a motivating welcome speech by The Principal who welcomed the guests

warmly. The students sang an inauguration song apt for the motion. The Academic Administrator

also shared a few words of wisdom of his own. The anchor of the event also welcomed the chief

guests and the gathering and gave the stage away to the chief guests. The Traffic Wardens shared a

few words to initiate the event from their side as well by sharing details about themselves and their

work. Traffic Warden Manju Mehra shared her experience performing her duties at the Graphite

India Junction and various other areas.

Deputy Chief Samuel Henry also shared a quick extract of his years of work. A secondary

projector was set up on stage and linked to the Deputy Chief Warden‟s laptop as he eager to share the presentations and video compilations that he had meticulously collected over his many years of

service, before sharing which, he called upon the people, students and faculty alike and enquired

who of them had committed an infraction. Ranging from helmetless riding for both driver and

pillion, over speeding, stunt riding and triple riding to license less andunder aged driving. To which

the gathering responded by a show of hands as acknowledgement of committing a certain violation,

who were then called down to the stage and were questioned by the authorities as to what had

propelled them to violate the rules set by the Traffic Police.

The students responded with their reasons and purposes as justification for their actions. Some of

them were warned and excused while some others were caught and werealmost instantly fined by

them. The program then continued and (post) V Samuel Henry played slide shows about road

safety and regulation and also explained the reason for the existence ofthe traffic rules and shared

his testimonial about what had happened to a few good people who had by some chance happened

to break these rules. He also gave a special addressing to the students who were sole children. He

further stressed the importance of life and how precious a gift it is to all of mankind. He then

played video compilations which consisted of satirical images with regards to safe driving and

street smartness, while few videos consisted of sensitive police footage containing ground zero

reports of horrific accidents which he shared without hesitation for the greater good of the

gathering, this in turn made many feel sorry for the lives lost and also aware of the importance of

road safety.

The Deputy Chief then ended his barrage of information by displaying the daily lives of the police

who work for the safety of the public while also being benevolent enough to help all those around

them unflinchingly and without asking for much for themselves. This restored the respect for the

men and women in uniform in the hearts of the people present there and the precognitive image of a

corrupt money hungry person was replaced by a benevolent spirit with a strong will and sense of

justice ready to serve and protect the public. The mass was then asked to rise to take the

pledgewhich was read out by the Deputy Chief Warden

It stated:

AVOID USING MY VEHICLE AS A TOY

OBEY THE TRAFFIC RULES

CREATE AWARENESS AMONG ALL IN THE SOCIETY ABOUT THE ROAD SAFETY”

September, our college initiated an awareness program to promote

education and importance of being literate. The Group discussion on the “importance of education in contemporary society” was organized on literacy day. Each group was given a

related topic and the groups made their presentations after the discussion.
