JOB DESCRIPTIONP O S I T I O N D E S C R I P T IO N

Academic Services Assistants (ASAs) work with a team of 10-12 fellow ASAs under the supervision of the Center Supervisor. During regularly scheduled shifts, Academic Services Assistants provide customer service support to residence hall students using the Academic Services Center. Academic Services Assistants help find answers to students’ questions, monitor access to the facility, complete administrative tasks, prepare advertising that promotes the Center, and lead both group and 1-on-1 tutorials on basic software applications.

Q U A L I F I C A T I O N S

Required: Strong working knowledge of word processing software and Eudora; familiarity with the Internet; minimum cumulative GPA of 2.3; aptitude for learning new software; aptitude for teaching or tutoring.

Preferred: Ability to communicate effectively, ability to maintain cooperative peer relationships, ability to work sensitively with students, teamwork oriented, dependable, attentive to detail, a strong focus on customer service, friendliness and approachability, and an ability to learn MS Word, Netscape, Photoshop, and Excel.

T E R M S O F E M P L O Y M E N T

The period of employment for this position commences WHEN HIRED and continues through the end of the 2007-2008 academic year.

Academic Services Assistants are paid a wage of $9.50 per hour. The position’s payroll classification title is Assistant I, with the working title of Academic

Services Assistant. Academic Services Assistants must be currently enrolled University of California students. Active participation in staff orientation and training is required at the beginning of each

semester. Failure to do so will result in termination of the position. During the academic year, Academic Services Assistants are expected to work regularly

scheduled shifts and additionally scheduled meetings and training sessions. Academic Services Assistants are expected to attend regular staff meetings and on-going

training sessions as scheduled by the Center Supervisor. Meetings are held Wednesdays between 6:00-7:00 pm.

Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory job performance evaluation by the Center Supervisor with assistance from the Academic Program Coordinator.

A. Provide assistance to Academic Services Center users during scheduled shift hours (shifts are three hours long and may fall on holidays or weekends, in the morning, afternoon, and evening):

1. Provide helpful and courteous assistance to Academic Services center users and fellow staff

2. Assist Academic Services Center users in the operation of equipment, the use of software, and the use of the Internet

3. Conduct group workshops and 1-on-1 tutorials on general computer use and specific software packages as assigned

4. Create informational handouts on computer topics for resident use.5. Refer users to computer related resources as necessary6. Maintain a working knowledge of the Academic Services Center resources

and functions

B. Manage the operation of the Academic Services Center during its scheduled open hours:

1. Enforce all Academic Services Center policies and procedures2. Open and close the Academic Services Center according to operational

procedures3. Maintain security of the Academic Services Center and its equipment4. Control access to the Academic Services Center and track its use as directed

by the Center Supervisor5. Maintain waiting lists and follow waiting list policies according to operational

procedures6. Maintain a pleasant, clean, and quiet work environment for Academic

Services Center users according to procedures and supervisor expectations7. Maintain upkeep of computers by reporting all technical problems and

concerns to the Unit Supervisor.8. Create email accounts and register new users9. Submit shift reports to the Center Supervisor
