OVERVIEW

The SchoolAs a leading educational establishment in Continental Europe, St. Louis School is an independent internationalschool providing high quality education for students from the ages of two to eighteen. Founded in1996 to caterfor students from Nursery to Middle school, the school expanded in 2011 to incorporate the senior Years of 10-13and subsequently deliver the IGCSE and IB Diploma examinations. St. Louis School educates a diverse populationof 1000 students from over fifty nations, with 220 students educated at the High School campus. For the 2016/17academic year the graduating IB cohort will be comprised of 55 students. St. Louis School regards excellence inteaching as the cornerstone of its success. Faculty members, many with advanced degrees, are carefully selectedfrom countries around the world.

HIGH SCHOOL CURRICULUMAND DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS

The four-year high school curriculum offers the Cambridge (CIE) IGCSE examinations for Years 10 and 11, and theInternational Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB) for Years 12 and 13. Cambridge IGCSE is one of the world’smost rigorous international qualifications for 14 to 16 year olds, and broadens opportunities for students whowish to further their education either domestically or internationally. St. Louis School’s core curriculum for IGCSEcandidates includes a First Language, Second Language, Mathematics, one Natural Science and GlobalPerspectives (optional for those who wish to study Additional Mathematics). Students also choose several electivecourses ranging from Social Sciences to Creative Arts. Assessment takes place at the end of the course and includeswritten coursework, oral and practical assessment, and externally marked exams. The grading system used byCambridge for the IGCSE ranges from A* (A+) to G, with A* and A considered outstanding work.

The IB Programme is a challenging college preparatory curriculum, in which students are tested both internallythrough coursework and externally through final exams in six core subject areas. Students take three subjects athigher level (HL) and three subjects at standard level (SL) and must achieve a minimum score of 24 out of 45 pointsto graduate. In addition, they must complete a Theory of Knowledge course, 150 hours of Creativity, Action andService work (CAS), and a 4000 word research essay on a subject of their choice (Extended Essay), which can earnthe student an additional three points. The IB grading scale is from 1 to 7, with 4 as a passing mark and 6 and 7representing outstanding work (equivalent to A and A* (A+) respectively).

The Academic ProgramSt. Louis School follows the British National Curriculum throughout the school years whilst also offering elementsof the Italian National Curriculum for students wishing to take the national exam at the end of Middle School.

Extra-Curricular ProgrammeUpon graduation each student will have completed over 225 hours of extra-curricular activities within the threeCAS areas of Creativity, Action and Service. The school offers a variety of activities both within the school and inthe wider community including: Model United Nations, theater productions, sports competitions, The Spirit of St.Louis (newspaper), the SLS Media Team and numerous volunteering opportunities. St. Louis are also proud to bethe only school in Italy currently offering The Gold Duke of Edinburgh International Award – the world’s leadingyouth achievement award, combining practical experiences and life skills. Furthermore, since 2014, our studentshave been involved with a school project in rural Cambodia through the British Charitable organization, UnitedWorld Schools. Students have the opportunity to raise funds and assist with building and maintaining the school.Our goal is to establish a long-term educational project in Cambodia, offering lasting benefits for disadvantagedchildren and providing important growth opportunities for our students, teachers and the greater St. Louis SchoolCommunity.
