Two of a Kind is the exploration of an anthropomorphic architecture. The implementation of traditional architectural motifs, such as punched window openings and cornices, provides a contrast to the novel phyiscal form derived from the precedent of conjoined twins.
-
The initial phase consisted of a formal investigation based on two general tower conditions; stacked and lofted. Both primitives were subjected to formal simplification by rebuilding the profile of each level with fewer control points. The idea of an object and its counterpart was used as the basis for a new investigation.

A more in depth exploration of the pair condition included a physical model and drawings that investiagted the difference made possible through shape, detail, color and texture.
-
The final step in the investigation included identifying various types of conjoined twins and their architectural equivalents. Ronnie and Donnie Gaylon along with the Wrigley Building were chosen as the basis for a final model and drawing.

A fictitious family was created as part of the final group. The mother figure incorporates modern tower elements, such as exposed structure and a curtain wall skin, so as to contrast with the traditional architectural language of the conjoined figure. The child is a combination of the two.

Skin DeepInstructor Xavier VendrellSpring 2012
As with the human body, the skin of a building is a multi-functional system. The skin of a building defines the border between what is in and what is out. It regulates acces to light, air, views, and is a significant aesthetc component.

The site is just off the corner of Ashland Avenue and Division Street, approximately two miles west of Chicagos lakefront. The four bars of units slowly rise in height torwards Division Street. The code compliant slope mediates the change in height from the one and two story homes to the south and the taller commercial/ multi-unit housing to the north.

The initial investigation examined the Palmer House (above left). The plinth of the hotel contains the major public spaces, such as the lobby, ballrooms, restaurants and retail. The most compelling spatial relations of the building were found in this zone. The diagram sequence (above) shows the plinth being raised into the air along modified towers. The final image (right) shows the hotel transformed into the sky plinth primitive.
Applied to the city as a whole the floating plinth stretches in all directions and establishes a new urban datum for the city. The interior spaces show the desired affect of being surrounded by the sky, river and city.

The building floats beyond the site boundary (red dots) allowing for a matt building typology to be inserted into the vertical expanse of Chicagos urban core.
The main entry into the building is located at the corner of W Fulton and N Canal filling in what is currently a parking lot. The two existing buildings to the south would be hollowed out and refitted as the buildings operations area.

A variety of means were employed to hold the building up and allow for circulation. An elevator and escalator ascend from the ground floor entry, steel legs sprout from the site or building and circulation shafts touch down as required.

Cell Cell CellInstructors Penelope Dean & Andrew ModdrellSpring 2011
The cellular concept was discovered through an iterative process of physical models. The first series was created prom PVC sheets required to fill a volume of 4x4x1. One model was selected as a precedent for the next iteration. This series, constructed of paper, follows the same logic of polygons with shared borders. The concept was used as the base for a mixed use building incorporating architectural necessities such as circulation, day lighting, program and structure.
