2011: Schulz, M. R. & Peachey, A., Prevalence of Bicycling and Walking Prior to a Major Natural Experiment in Greensboro, School of Health and Human Performance Office of Research. The aim of this pilot study is to determine the prevalence of walking and cycling at three intersections along Lee Street at the southern extent of the UNCG campus prior to the opening of a pedestrian and bicycle underpass that increases the connectivity of Lee Street, the Glenwood neighborhood, and UNCG. The underpass is scheduled to open in August 2011. This pilot data on bicycle and pedestrian prevalence is necessary but not sufficient for a thorough evaluation of the underpass project. The pilot data will empower the investigators and the Greensboro Department of Transportation (GDOT) to seek funding to complete an evaluation after the opening of the underpass. An evaluation showing the positive impact of the underpass on walking and bicycling will help push forward other built environment initiatives to encourage bicycling and walking.

2012: Secondary Review Committee for CE12-001: Grants for Injury Control Research Centers (U49), CDC, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control. The purpose of the Secondary Review Committee was to make funding recommendations to the Center Director based on published priorities in the FOA. Criteria used by the secondary review committee in making recommendations included (1) The overall merit of the application as evaluated by the Initial Special Emphasis Panel; (2) The relevance of the application to program research priorities and program balance as outlined in the FOA; and (3) The availability of funds. I joined the majority of the Secondary Review Committee and voted to concur with the staff recommendation to fund the top seven scoring applications in rank order. The proposed funding total for the seven applications was $6,338,500. The seven applications included four existing Centers (University of Iowa, Mt Sinai, West Virginia University, and the Nationwide Children's Hospital) and three new Centers (University of Michigan, Columbia University, and University of Rochester). We also recommended that if additional resources became available, applications with priority scores of better than 40 be funded in rank order.
