Trans 50 delivers high quality care for elderly people throughout South Africa. Its Acacia Park Retirement Village provides nursing care for around 60 people, and independent living for a further 100 residents.

To manage the village, the eight-strong administration team needs reliable, cost-effective printers, IT systems and telecoms. Helen Ferreira, Branch Account Administrator at Acacia Retirement Village, states, “We deal with our head office on a constant basis so we need good communications.”

THE SOLUTIONOne-stop shop

For the last 12 years, the village has relied on Nashua to meet its IT and communications requirements, and Nashua is now its only technology supplier. Ferreira comments, “I prefer to have a one-stop shop – we know the people at Nashua by name, and we are on an excellent footing with them.”

Nashua has centralised printing at the village and provided a solution based on printers and multi function devices (MFPs) that can scan, print, copy and fax. HP OfficeJet Pro X printers provide affordable full-colour capabilities, which Acacia uses to print colour-coded medical reports, menus, and other items. Nashua also supplies ink cartridges and paper.

Cost savings

“Nashua is very competitive on price and has substantially reduced our costs – we used to spend a fortune on cartridges,” says Ferreira.

“Our cost per page for mono printing used to be 12 to 15 cents, but is now only 8 cents – and colour is also much less than we used to pay.”

Acacia’s team now scan many documents, and then email or fax them directly to head office – saving time and reducing the expense of using a courier to send paperwork. Ferreira says, “We scan all the time, and we are trying to go as paperless as possible.”

Software on the printers alerts Nashua when a cartridge is running low, ensuring Acacia is never without ink.

“Previously, when ink ran out we might have been without colour for days, and we sometimes had to go home and use our own printers,” says Ferreira. “Overall, the machines are user-friendly and reliable and we haven’t had to send back a single device.”

As well as printers, Nashua provided a new telephone system for Acacia. This has increased the number of extensions from 3 to 10 and given the admin team cordless handsets so they are not tied to their desks. Nashua has also installed a Wi-Fi network, helping improve mobility for staff with laptops.

“Before, if a call came in for someone without an extension, we had to walk down to the clinic or ward to fetch them,” says Ferreira. “Now, everyone’s connected.”

Service is priority

“My priority is service – a product is a product, but service is key for me,” says Ferreira. “When I need something, I pick up the phone and call our Nashua technician – who we call the ‘doctor’ – and he comes quickly to help. If we ask for something, Nashua bends over backwards to get it for us.

“Nashua are always there if we need advice, and they are very supportive,” concludes Ferreira. “I would recommend Nashua to anyone.”
